We present a study of the influence of an external magnetic field H and an electric current I on the spin-valve (SV) effect between a ferromagnetic thin film (F) and a sharp tip of a nonmagnetic metal (N). To explain our observations, we propose a model of a local surface SV which is formed in such a N/F contact. In this model, a ferromagnetic cluster at the N/F interface plays the role of the free layer in this SV. This cluster exhibits a larger coercive field than the bulk of the ferromagnetic film, presumably due to its nanoscale nature. Finally, we construct a magnetic state diagram of the surface SV as a function of I and H.
We propose and demonstrate that a EuO-induced and top-gated graphene ferromagnetic junction can be simultaneously operated as a spin filter as well as a spin valve. We attribute such a remarkable result to a coexistence of a half-metal band and a common energy gap for opposite spins in ferromagnetic graphene. We show that, both the spin filter and the spin valve can be effectively controlled by a back gate voltage, and they survive for practical metal contacts and finite temperature. Specifically, larger single spin currents and on-state currents can be reached with contacts with work function…
Coherent quantum transport in ferromagnetic/ semiconductor/ ferromagnetic junctions is studied theoretically within the Landauer framework of ballistic transport. We show that quantum coherence can have unexpected implications for spin injection and that some intuitive spintronic concepts which are founded in semi-classical physics no longer apply: A quantum spin-valve (QSV) effect occurs even in the absence of a net spin polarized current flowing through the device, unlike in the classical regime. The converse effect also arises, i.e. a zero spin-valve signal for a non-vanishing spin-current.…
A high reproducibility in the performance of cobalt/copper and permalloy/copper lateral spin valves with transparent contacts is obtained by optimizing the interface quality and the purity of copper. This allows us to study comprehensively the spin injection properties of both ferromagnetic materials, as well as the spin transport properties of copper, which are not affected by the used ferromagnetic material, leading to long spin diffusion lengths. Spin polarizations of permalloy and cobalt are obtained as a function of temperature. Analysis of the temperature dependence of both the spin pola…
We present a fabrication scheme called 'fork stamping' optimized for the dry transfer of individual pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto ferromagnetic contact electrodes fabricated by standard lithography. We demonstrate the detailed recipes for a residue-free device fabrication and in-situ current annealing on suspended CNT spin-valve devices with ferromagnetic Permalloy (Py) contacts and report preliminary transport characterization and magnetoresistance experiments at cryogenic temperatures. This scheme can directly be used to implement more complex device structures, including multiple ga…
We theoretically study the spin current and spin-transfer torque generation in a conventional spin- valve hybrid structure of type ferromagnetic/normal metal/ferromagnetic (FM/NM/FM) made of the topological insulator (TI), in which a gate voltage is attached to the normal layer. We demonstrate the penetration of the spin-transfer torque into the right ferromagnetic layer and show that, unlike graphene spin-valve junction, the spin-transfer torque in TI is very sensitive to the chemical potential of the NM region. As an important result, by changing the chemical potential of the NM spacer and m…
We theoretically analyzed a magnetic wall confined in a nano-contact spin valve paying special attention to the penetration of the magnetic wall into thin ferromagnetic electrodes. We showed that, compared with the Bloch wall, the penetration of the Neel wall is suppressed by increases of the demagnetization energy. We found the optimal conditions of the radius and height of the nano-contact to maximize the power of the current-induced oscillation of the magnetic wall. We also found that the thermal stability of the Bloch wall increases when the nano-contact's radius increases or height decrea…
We address two finite size effects in perpendicular transport through magnetic multilayers. When the magnetic layer thickness in spin valves becomes of the order or smaller than the spin-flip diffusion length, structural asymmetries affect the transport properties. A magnetic layer with thickness approaching the magnetic coherence length becomes transparent for spin currents polarized perpendicular to the magnetization. We use the generalized magnetoelectronic circuit theory to investigate both effects on the angular magnetoresistance (aMR) and spin transfer torque. We analyze recent aMR exper…
Magnetization dynamic response of coupled and uncoupled spin valves with structure NiFe(20 nm)/Cu(t_Cu)/NiFe(20 nm)/IrMn(10nm) were probed using broadband ferromagnetic resonance absorption measurements. By varying the Cu thickness t_Cu we were able to tailor the coupling intensity between the free and pinned layers. Broadband spectra show two resonant modes for each measured field. It is noticed that the coupling among NiFe layers modifies the amplitude of the absorption peaks and, moreover, the dispersion relations of the modes, which are distorted specially at the anti-parallel state. A num…
We consider a non-local spin valve in a Van der Pauw cross geometry with four ferromagnetic electrodes. Two antiparallel ferromagnets are used as (charge) source and drain while the detector circuit involves measuring the voltage between two collinear ferromagnets with parallel or antiparallel magnetizations. We find a potentially large increase of the non-local spin voltage. The setup displays several additional interesting properties: (i) infinite GMR for the non-local resistance (if a symmetry requirement for the device is met); (ii) ON-OFF switch effect, when the injector electrodes are pa…
We use a ferromagnetic voltage probe model to study the influence of inelastic scattering on giant magnetoresistance and current-induced torques in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic metal spin valves. The model is based on the Green's function formulation of transport theory and represents spin-dependent and spin-independent inelastic scatterers by interior voltage probes that are constrained to carry respectively no charge current and no spin or charge current. We find that giant magnetoresistance and spin transfer torques in ferromagnetic metal spin valve structures survive arbitrarily str…
We observe and analyze tunable relaxation of a pure spin current by an antiferromagnet in spin-valves. This is achieved by carefully controlling the angle between a resonantly excited ferromagnetic layer pumping the spin current and the Néel vector of the antiferromagnetic layer. The effect is observed as an angle-dependent spin-pumping contribution to the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. An interplay between spin-mixing conductance and, often disregarded, longitudinal spin conductance is found to underlie our observations, which is in agreement with a recent prediction for related ferromagn…
We report an observation of spin-valve like hysteresis within a few atomic layers at a ferromagnetic interface. We use phonon spectroscopy of nanometer sized point contacts as an in-situ probe to study the mechanism of the effect. Distinct in energy phonon peaks for contacts with dissimilar nonmagnetic outer electrodes allow to localize the observed spin switching to the top or bottom interfaces for nanometer thin ferromagnetic layers. The mechanism consistent with our data is energetically distinct atomically thin surface spin layers that can form current or field driven surface spin-valves w…
We study a triplet spin valve obtained by intercalating a triplet superconductor spacer between two ferromagnetic regions with non-collinear magnetizations. We demonstrate that the magnetoresitance of the triplet spin valve depends on the relative orientations of the d-vector, characterizing the superconducting state, and the magnetization directions of the ferromagnetic layers. For devices characterized by a long superconductor, the Cooper pairs spintronics regime is reached allowing to observe the properties of a polarized current sustained by Cooper pairs only. In this regime a super-magnet…
We study interaction effects on transport through a small metallic cluster connected to two ferromagnetic leads (a single-electron spin-valve transistor) in the "orthodox model" for the Coulomb blockade. The non-local exchange between the spin accumulation on the island and the ferromagnetic leads is shown to affect the transport properties such as the electric current and spin-transfer torque as a function of the magnetic configuration, gate voltage, and applied magnetic field.
This article discusses the spin-torque effect in a spin-valve made out of two ferromagnetic leads connected through a coherent nanoconductor (NC), in the limit where a single channel of the NC lies near the Fermi energy of the leads. Due to quantum interferences inside the NC, the spin-torque presents clear qualitative differences with respect to the case of a multichannel disordered spin-valve. In particular, it can be modulated with the NC gate voltage. In principle, this modulation can be observed experimentally, assuming that the spin-torque affects a ferromagnetic nano-domain in direct co…
We study the nonlocal spin transport in a lateral spin valve with multiple ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. When two current-injecting and two spin current-detecting electrodes are all ferromagnetic, the number of possible nonlocal spin signal states is four at maximum. In reality, this number is reduced, depending on the inter-probe distance and the relative magnitudes of the spin resistances. Our theoretical results are in agreement with recent experiments of spin injection into an Al island, a carbon nanotube, and graphene.
We present a theory of coherent quantum transport in ferromagnetic/ non-magnetic/ ferromagnetic heterojunctions. We predict quantum coherence to give rise to a quantum spin valve effect that, unlike its familiar classical analog, occurs even in the absence of a net spin current through the heterostructure. Thus the relationship between spin and charge transport is qualitatively different in the presence of quantum interference than in the (semi)classical regime. This has important implications for the design of quantum coherent spintronic devices and the interpretation of experiments.
We propose spin valves where a 2D non-magnetic conductor is intercalated between two ferromagnetic insulating layers. In this setup, the relative orientation of the magnetizations of the insulating layers can have a strong impact on the in-plane conductivity of the 2D conductor. We first show this for a graphene bilayer, described with a tight-binding model, placed between two ferromagnetic insulators. In the anti-parallel configuration, a band gap opens at the Dirac point, whereas in the parallel configuration, the graphene bilayer remains conducting. We then compute the electronic structure …
Graphene has remarkable opportunities for spintronics due to its high mobility and long spin diffusion length, especially when encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Here, for the first time, we demonstrate gate-tunable spin transport in such encapsulated graphene-based spin valves with one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic edge contacts. An electrostatic backgate tunes the Fermi level of graphene to probe different energy levels of the spin-polarized density of states (DOS) of the 1D ferromagnetic contact, which interact through a magnetic proximity effect (MPE) that induces ferromagnet…
In this Letter we demonstrate that Permalloy (Py), a widely used Ni/Fe alloy, forms contacts to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that meet the requirements for the injection and detection of spin-polarized currents in carbon-based spintronic devices. We establish the material quality and magnetization properties of Py strips in the shape of suitable electrical contacts and find a sharp magnetization switching tunable by geometry in the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of a single strip at cryogenic temperatures. In addition, we show that Py contacts couple strongly to CNTs, comparable to Pd contacts…
We study the electrical injection and detection of spin accumulation in lateral ferromagnetic metal-nonmagnetic metal-ferromagnetic metal (F/N/F) spin valve devices with transparent interfaces. Different ferromagnetic metals, permalloy (Py), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni), are used as electrical spin injectors and detectors. For the nonmagnetic metal both aluminium (Al) and copper (Cu) are used. Our multi-terminal geometry allows us to experimentally separate the spin valve effect from other magneto resistance signals such as the anomalous magneto resistance (AMR) and Hall effects. We find that t…
We study the electrical injection and detection of spin currents in a lateral spin valve device, using permalloy (Py) as ferromagnetic injecting and detecting electrodes and copper (Cu) as non-magnetic metal. Our multi-terminal geometry allows us to experimentally distinguish different magneto resistance signals, being 1) the spin valve effect, 2) the anomalous magneto resistance (AMR) effect and 3) Hall effects. We find that the AMR contribution of the Py contacts can be much bigger than the amplitude of the spin valve effect, making it impossible to observe the spin valve effect in a 'conven…
We study the spin-dependent transport properties of a spin valve based on a double quantum dot. Each quantum dot is assumed to be strongly coupled to its own ferromagnetic lead, while the coupling between the dots is relatively weak. The current flowing through the system is determined within the perturbation theory in the hopping between the dots, whereas the spectrum of a quantum dot-ferromagnetic lead subsystem is determined by means of the numerical renormalization group method. The spin-dependent charge fluctuations between ferromagnets and quantum dots generate an effective exchange fiel…
We introduce a new class of spintronics devices in which a spin-valve like effect results from strong spin-orbit coupling in a single ferromagnetic layer rather than from injection and detection of a spin-polarized current by two coupled ferromagnets. The effect is observed in a normal-metal/insulator/ferromagnetic-semiconductor tunneling device. This behavior is caused by the interplay of the anisotropic density of states in (Ga,Mn)As with respect to the magnetization direction, and the two-step magnetization reversal process in this material.
By successive oxygen treatments of graphene non-local spin-valve devices we achieve a gradual increase of the contact resistance area products ($R_cA$) of Co/MgO spin injection and detection electrodes and a transition from linear to non-linear characteristics in the respective differential dV-dI-curves. With this manipulation of the contacts both spin lifetime and amplitude of the spin signal can significantly be increased by a factor of seven in the same device. This demonstrates that contact-induced spin dephasing is the bottleneck for spin transport in graphene devices with small $R_cA$ va…
We study the effect of the ferromagnetic (FM) contacts on the spin accumulation in the lateral spin valve system for the collinear magnetization configurations. When an additional FM electrode is introduced in the all-metallic lateral spin-valve system, we find that the transresistance can be fractionally suppressed or very weakly influenced depending on the position of the additional FM electrode, and relative magnitudes of contact resistance and the bulk resistance defined over the spin diffusion length. Nonlocal spin signals such as nonlocal voltage drop and leakage spin currents are indepe…
Spin-torque driven ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) is used to study thin Co/Ni synthetic layers with perpendicular anisotropy confined in spin-valve based nanojunctions. Field swept ST-FMR measurements were conducted with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the layer surface. The resonance lines were measured under low amplitude rf excitation, from 1 to 20 GHz. These results are compared with those obtained using conventional rf field driven FMR on extended films with the same Co/Ni layer structure. The layers confined in spin valves have a lower resonance field, a narrower resonance li…
We demonstrate spin-valve magnetoresistance with a current-in-plane (CIP) configuration in (Ga,Fe)Sb / InAs (thickness $t_\mathrm{InAs}$ nm) / (Ga,Fe)Sb trilayer heterostructures, where (Ga,Fe)Sb is a ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) with high Curie temperature ($T_\mathrm{C}$). An MR curve with an open minor loop is clearly observed at 3.7 K in a sample with $t_\mathrm{InAs}$ = 3 nm, which originates from the parallel - antiparallel magnetization switching of the (Ga,Fe)Sb layers and spin-dependent scattering at the (Ga,Fe)Sb / InAs interfaces. The MR ratio increases (from 0.03 to 1.6%) with…
Spin pumping by a moving magnetization gives rise to an electric voltage over a spin valve. Thermal fluctuations of the magnetization manifest themselves as increased thermal voltage noise with absorption lines at the ferromagnetic resonance frequency and/or zero frequency. The effect depends on the magnetization configuration and can be of the same order of magnitude as the Johnson-Nyquist thermal noise. Measuring colored voltage noise is an alternative to ferromagnetic resonance experiments for nano-scale ferromagnetic circuits.
The resistance of CPP spin valve is a continuous function of the angle $θ$ between the magnetizations of both ferromagnets. We use the cicuit theory for non-collinear magnetoelectronics to compute the angular magnetoresistance of CPP spin valves taking the spin accumulation in the ferromagnetic layers into account.
We investigate spin and charge transport in both single and bilayer graphene non-local spin-valve devices. Similar to previous studies on bilayer graphene, we observe an inverse dependence of the spin lifetime on the carrier mobility in our single layer devices. This general trend is only observed in devices with large contact resistances. Furthermore, we observe a second Dirac peak in devices with long spin lifetimes. This results from charge transport underneath the contacts. In contrast, all devices with low ohmic contact resistances only exhibit a single Dirac peak. Additionally, the spin …
Motivated by the recent achievements in manipulation of C60 molecules in STM experiments, we study theoretically the structure and electronic properties of a C60 molecule in an STM-tunneljunction with a magnetic tip and magnetic adatom on a Cu(111) surface from first-principle calculations. For the case of V tip/adatom, we demonstrate how spin-coupling between the magnetic V atoms mediated by the C60 can be observed in the electronic transport, which display a strong spin-filtering effect, allowing mainly majority-spin electrons to pass(>95%). Moreover, we find a significant change in the cond…
Fluctuations of electric current in a spin valve consisting of a diffusive conductor connected to ferromagnetic leads and operated in the giant magnetoresistance regime are studied. It is shown that a new source of fluctuations due to spin-flip scattering enhances strongly shot noise up to a point where the Fano factor approaches the full Poissonian value.
It has been predicted theoretically that an unconventional odd-frequency spin-triplet component of superconducting order parameter can be induced in multilayered ferromagnetic structures with non-collinear magnetization. In this work we study experimentally nano-scale devices, in which a ferromagnetic spin valve is embedded into a Josephson junction. We demonstrate two ways of in-situ analysis of such Josephson spin valves: via magnetoresistance measurements and via in-situ magnetometry based on flux quantization in the junction. We observe that supercurrent through the device depends on the r…
We investigate spin relaxation in graphene by systematically comparing the roles of spin absorption, other contact-induced effects (e.g. fringe fields, etc.), and bulk spin relaxation for graphene spin valves with MgO barriers, Al2O3 barriers, and transparent contacts. We obtain effective spin lifetimes by fitting the Hanle spin precession data with two models that include or exclude the effect of spin absorption. Results indicate that additional contact-induced spin relaxation other than spin absorption dominates the contact effect. For tunneling contacts, we find reasonable agreement between…
We propose a heat valve based on the interplay between thermal transport and proximity-induced exchange splitting in Josephson tunnel junctions. We demonstrate that the junction heat conductance strongly depends on the relative alignment of the exchange fields induced in the superconductors. Colossal magneto-heat resistance ratios as large as 10^7% are predicted to occur under proper temperature and phase conditions, as well as suitable ferromagnet-superconductor combinations. Moreover, the quantum phase tailoring, intrinsic to the Josephson coupling, offers an additional degree of freedom for…
The spin lifetime anisotropy is an important quantity for investigating the spin relaxation mechanisms in graphene and in heterostructures of two-dimensional materials. We generalize the diffusive spin transport equations of oblique spin precession in a lateral spin valve with finite contact resistance. This yields a method to determine the spin lifetime anisotropy ratio ξ=τ$_{\perp}$/τ$_{\parallel}$, which is the ratio between lifetimes of spin polarized perpendicular and parallel to the graphene surface. By solving the steady-state Bloch equations, we show that the line-shape of the oblique …
We study charge transport in a two dimensional hybrid systems consisting of nonmagnetic two dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit interaction sandwiched between a Ferromagnetic lead and a normal metallic lead (FM/2DEG/NM). An {\it absolute spin valve effect} is shown to exist. It is shown that the conductance of such a hybrid system changes upon rotating the magnetization such that it always stays perpendicular to the current direction. An ASVC ({\it Absolute Spin Valve Coefficient}) is defined to quantify this effect and its dependence on various parameter is studied.
Nonlinear current-voltage characteristics and magnetoresistance of point contacts between a normal metal (N) and films of amorphous ferromagnet (F) Co40Fe40B20 of different thickness, exchange-biased by antiferromagnetic Mn80Ir20 are studied. A surface spin valve effect in the conductance of such F-N contacts is observed. The effect of exchange bias is found to be inversely proportional to the Co40Fe40B20 film thickness. This behavior as well as other magneto-transport effects we observe on single exchange-pinned ferromagnetic films are similar in nature to those found in conventional three-la…
We have succeeded in fully describing dynamic properties of spin current including the different spin absorption mechanism for longitudinal and transverse spins in lateral spin valves, which enables to elucidate intrinsic spin transport and relaxation mechanism in the nonmagnet. The deduced spin lifetimes are found independent of the contact type. From the transit-time distribution of spin current extracted from the Fourier transform in Hanle measurement data, the velocity of the spin current in Ag with Py/Ag Ohmic contact turns out much faster than that expected from the widely used model.
Two ferromagnetic layers magnetically decoupled by a thick normal metal spacer layer can be, nevertheless, dynamically coupled via spin currents emitted by the spin-pump and absorbed through the spin-torque effects at the neighboring interfaces. A decrease of damping in both layers due to a partial compensation of the angular momentum leakage in each layer was previously observed at the coincidence of the two ferromagnetic resonances. In case of non-zero magnetic coupling, such a dynamic exchange will depend on the mutual precession of the magnetic moments in the layers. A difference in the li…
We present measurements of magneto-Seebeck effect on a spin valve with in-plane thermal gradient. We measured open circuit voltage and short circuit current by applying a temperature gradient across a spin valve stack, where one of the ferromagnetic layers is pinned. We found a clear hysteresis in these two quantities as a function of magnetic field. From these measurements, the magneto-Seebeck effect was found to be 0.82%.
We present the first spintronic semiconductor field effect transistor. The injector and collector contacts of this device were made from magnetic permalloy thin films with different coercive fields so that they could be magnetized either parallel or antiparallel to each other in different applied magnetic fields. The conducting medium was a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in an AlSb/InAs quantum well. Data from this device suggest that its resistance is controlled by two different types of spin-valve effect: the first occurring at the ferromagnet-2DEG interfaces; and the second occu…
It is known that the lowest propagating mode in a narrow ballistic ribbon of graphene may lack the twofold valley degeneracy of higher modes. Depending on the crystallographic orientation of the ribbon axis, the lowest mode mixes both valleys or lies predominantly in a single valley (chosen by the direction of propagation). We show, using a tight-binding model calculation, that a nonequilibrium valley polarization can be realized in a sheet of graphene, upon injection of current through a ballistic point contact with zigzag edges. The polarity can be inverted by local application of a gate vol…
Spin valves consisting of heterostructures of single-layer hexagonal crystal on an antiferromagnetic substrate or of bilayer hexagonal crystal intercalated between two (anti)ferromagnetic insulators, with the current-in-plane geometry, are proposed. The two-dimensional hexagonal crystals such as graphene, silicene, germanene, and stanene are modeled by the tight binding model of honeycomb lattice. The magnetization orientation of the antiferromagnetic substrate(s) controls the band gap and topological properties of bulk, which in turn control the transport of three types of spin valve geometri…
We have measured the spin injection efficiency and spin lifetime in Co$_2$FeSi/$n$-GaAs lateral nonlocal spin valves from 20 to 300 K. We observe large ($\sim$40 $μ$V) spin valve signals at room temperature and injector currents of $10^3~$A/cm$^2$, facilitated by fabricating spin valve separations smaller than the 1 $μ$m spin diffusion length and applying a forward bias to the detector contact. The spin transport parameters are measured by comparing the injector-detector contact separation dependence of the spin valve signal with a numerical model accounting for spin drift and diffusion. The a…
Spin-torque driven ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) is used to study magnetic excitations in Co/Ni synthetic layers confined in nanojunctions. Field swept ST-FMR measurements were conducted with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the layer surface. The resonance lines were measured under low amplitude excitation in a linear response regime. The resulting resonance fields were compared with those obtained using conventional rf field driven FMR on extended films with the same Co/Ni layer structure. A lower resonance field is found in confined structures. The effect of both dipolar fields …
We theoretically propose an experiment to determine the penetration depth of a transverse spin current using a nonlocal spin valve with three ferromagnetic (F) layers, where the F_1, F_2, and F_3 layers act as the spin injector, detector, and absorber, respectively. We show that the penetration depth can be evaluated by measuring the dependence of the spin signal (magnetoresistance) on the thickness of the F_3 layer.
We investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of a lateral spin-valve device with a 600 nm-long GaAs channel and ferromagnetic MnGa electrodes with perpendicular magnetization. Its current-voltage characteristics show nonlinear behavior below 50 K, indicating that tunnel transport through the MnGa/GaAs Schottky barrier is dominant at low temperatures. We observed clear magnetoresistance (MR) ratio up to 12% at 4 K when applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the film plane. Furthermore, a large spin-dependent output voltage of 33 mV is obtained. These values are the highest in lat…
At the interface between a nonmagnetic metal (NM) and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) spin current can interact with the magnetization, leading to a modulation of the spin current. The interfacial exchange field at these FI-NM interfaces can be probed by placing the interface in contact with the spin transport channel of a lateral spin valve (LSV) device and observing additional spin relaxation processes. We study interfacial exchange field in lateral spin valve devices where Cu spin transport channel is in proximity with ferromagnetic insulator EuS (EuS-LSV) and yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$…
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
We investigate effects of spin-orbit splitting on electronic transport in a spin valve consisting of a large quantum dot defined on a two-dimensional electron gas with two ferromagnetic contacts. In the presence of both structure inversion asymmetry (SIA) and bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA) a giant anisotropy in the spin-relaxation times has been predicted. We show how such an anisotropy affects the electronic transport properties such as the angular magnetoresistance and the spin-transfer torque. Counterintuitively, anisotropic spin-relaxation processes sometimes enhance the spin accumulation.
Nanopillar spin valve devices are typically comprised of two ferromagnetic layers: a reference layer and a free layer whose magnetic orientation can be changed by both an external magnetic field and through the introduction of spin-polarized electric current. Here we report the continuous repeated switching behavior of both the reference and free layers of a perpendicular spin valve made of Co/Pd and Co/Ni multilayers that arises for sufficiently large DC currents. This periodic switching of the two layers produces an oscillating signal in the MHz regime but is only observed for one sign of th…
We consider alignment-dependent spin and heat transport across a magnon spin valve in the tunneling regime, i.e., a junction consisting of two weakly coupled ferromagnetic insulators. We determine the difference in spin and heat conductance between the parallel and antiparallel configuration of the magnetization direction. The dependence of these conductances on both the Gilbert damping and ellipticity is studied. We find that both magnon ellipticity and dissipation open channels for magnons to tunnel through in the antiparallel configuration. Our results highlight an important difference betw…
