At the interface between a nonmagnetic metal (NM) and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) spin current can interact with the magnetization, leading to a modulation of the spin current. The interfacial exchange field at these FI-NM interfaces can be probed by placing the interface in contact with the spin transport channel of a lateral spin valve (LSV) device and observing additional spin relaxation processes. We study interfacial exchange field in lateral spin valve devices where Cu spin transport channel is in proximity with ferromagnetic insulator EuS (EuS-LSV) and yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG-LSV). The spin signals were compared with reference lateral spin valve devices fabricated on nonmagnetic Si/SiO$_2$ substrate with MgO or AlO$_x$ capping. The nonlocal spin valve signal is about 4 and 6 times lower in the EuS-LSV and YIG-LSV, respectively. The suppression in the spin signal has been attributed to enhanced surface spin-flip probability at the Cu-EuS (or Cu-YIG) interface due to interfacial spin-orbit field. Besides spin signal suppression we also found widely observed low temperature peak in the spin signal at $T \sim$30 K is shifted to higher temperature in the case of devices in contact with EuS or YIG. Temperature dependence of spin signal for different injector-detector distances reveal fluctuating exchange field at these interfaces cause additional spin decoherence which limit spin relaxation time in addition to conventional sources of spin relaxation. Our results show that temperature dependent measurement with pure spin current can be used to probe interfacial exchange field at the ferromagnetic insulator-nonmagnetic metal interface.
We develop a microscopic formulation of dynamical spin injection in heterostructure comprising nonmagnetic metals in contact with ferromagnets. The spin pumping current is expressed in terms of Green's function of the nonmagnetic metal attached to the ferromagnet where a precessing magnetization is induced. The formulation allows for the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling and disorder. The Green's functions involved in the expression for the current are expressed in real-space lattice coordinates and can thus be efficiently computed using recursive methods.
Spin current injection and spin accumulation near a ferromagnetic insulator (FI)/nonmagnetic metal (NM) bilayer film under a thermal gradient is investigated theoretically. Using the Fermi golden rule and the Boltzmann equations, we find that FI and NM can exchange spins via interfacial electron-magnon scattering because of the imbalance between magnon emission and absorption caused by either non-equilibrium distribution of magnons or non-equilibrium between magnons and electrons. A temperature gradient in FI and/or a temperature difference across the FI/NM interface generates a spin current w…
Equilibrium transport properties of a single-level quantum dot tunnel-coupled to ferromagnetic leads and exchange-coupled to a side nonmagnetic reservoir are analyzed theoretically in the Kondo regime. The equilibrium spectral functions and conductance through the dot are calculated using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. It is shown that in the antiparallel magnetic configuration, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition with increasing exchange coupling $J$, where the conductance drops from its maximum value to zero. In the parallel configuration, on the other hand, th…
We start closing a gap in the comparison of experimental and theoretical data associated with the spin Hall effect. Based on a first-principles characterization of electronic structure and a semiclassical description of electron transport, we compute the skew-scattering contribution to the transverse spin and charge currents generated by spin and anomalous Hall effect in a Co/Cu multilayer system doped with Bi impurities. The fact that the created currents cross the interface between the two materials strongly influences the efficiency of charge to spin current conversion, as demonstrated by o…
We present theoretical study of shot noise in single wall metallic carbon nanotubes weakly coupled to either nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic leads. Using the real-time diagrammatic technique, we calculate the current, Fano factor and tunnel magnetoresistance in the sequential tunneling regime. It is shown that the differential conductance displays characteristic four-fold periodicity, indicating single-electron charging. Such a periodicity is also visible in tunnel magnetoresistance of the system as well as in the Fano factor. The present studies elucidate the impact of ferromagnetic (vs. nonmagn…
Symmetry lowering at an interface leads to an enhancement of the effect of spin-orbit coupling and to a discontinuity of spin currents passing through the interface. This discontinuity is characterized by a "spin-memory loss" (SML) parameter $δ$ that has only been determined directly at low temperatures. Although $δ$ is believed to be significant in experiments involving interfaces between ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic metals, especially heavy metals like Pt, it is more often than not neglected to avoid introducing too many unknown interface parameters in addition to often poorly known bulk pa…
A theoretical formulation of magnetoresistance effect in a metallic ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer originated from the charge-spin conversion by the anomalous Hall effect is presented. Analytical expressions of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities in both nonmagnet and ferromagnet are obtained by solving the spin diffusion equation. The magnetoresistance generated from charge-spin conversion purely caused by the anomalous Hall effect in the ferromagnet is found to be proportional to the square of the spin polarizations in the ferromagnet and has fixed sign. We also find additional …
We compute the spin-orbit torque in a transition metal heterostructure using Slater-Koster parameterization in the two-center tight-binding approximation and accounting for d-orbitals only. In this method, the spin-orbit coupling is modeled within Russel-Saunders scheme, which enables us to treat interfacial and bulk spin-orbit transport on equal footing. The two components of the spin-orbit torque, dissipative (damping-like) and reactive (field-like), are computed within Kubo linear response theory. By systematically studying their thickness and angular dependence, we were able to accurately …
Injection of spins into semiconductors is essential for the integration of the spin functionality into conventional electronics. Insulating layers are often inserted between ferromagnetic metals and semiconductors for obtaining an efficient spin injection, and it is therefore crucial to distinguish between signatures of electrical spin injection and impurity-driven effects in the tunnel barrier. Here we demonstrate an impurity-assisted tunneling magnetoresistance effect in nonmagnetic-insulator-nonmagnetic and ferromagnetic-insulator-nonmagnetic tunnel barriers. In both cases, the effect refle…
Spin pumping in Yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG)/nonmagnetic-metal (NM) layer systems under ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) conditions is a popular method of generating spin current in the NM layer. A good understanding of the spin current source is essential in extracting spin Hall angle of the NM and in potential spintronics applications. It is widely believed that spin current is pumped from precessing YIG magnetization into NM layer. Here, by combining microwave absorption and DC-voltage measurements on YIG/Pt and YIG/NM1/NM2 (NM1=Cu or Al, NM2=Pt or Ta), we unambiguously showed that spin current i…
Spin-dependent transport at heavy metal/magnetic insulator interfaces is at the origin of many phenomena at the forefront of spintronics research. A proper quantification of the different interfacial spin conductances is crucial for many applications. Here, we report the first measurement of the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) of Pt on a purely ferromagnetic insulator (EuS). We perform SMR measurements in a wide range of temperatures and fit the results by using a microscopic model. From this fitting procedure we obtain the temperature dependence of the spin conductances ($G_s$, $G_r$ and $G…
We report spin-dependent quantum coherent oscillations (ringing) and beats of the total and spin currents flowing through a quantum dot with Zeeman split levels. The spin dependent transport is calculated via nonequilibrium Green function in the transient after a bias voltage is turned on at t=0. The dot is coupled to two electrodes that can be ferromagnetic or nonmagnetic. In the ferromagnetic case both parallel and antiparallel alignments are considered. The coherent oscillation and beat frequencies are controlled via the Zeeman energy E_Z. In particular, for E_Z=0 no beats are observed and …
Using spin waves we directly probe the interface of an exchange biased Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Ir$_{25}$Mn$_{75}$ film which has been modified by the presence of an Au dusting layer. Combining this experimental data with a discretised simulation model, parameters relating to interface exchange coupling and modification of interface magnetisation are determined. Exchange coupling is found to be relatively uniform as gold thickness is increased, and undergoes a sudden drop at 1.5$\textrmÅ$ of gold. Interface magnetisation decreases as a function of the gold dusting thickness. Antiparallel alignment o…
Transverse magnetoresistance in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic trilayer originated from charge-spin conversion by anomalous Hall effect is investigated theoretically. Solving the spin diffusion equation in bulk and using the spin-dependent Landauer formula at the ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic interface, an analytical formula of the transverse resistivity is obtained. The charge-spin conversion by the anomalous Hall effect contributes to the magnetoresistance in a manner proportional to the square of the spin anomalous Hall angle. The angular dependence of the magnetoresistance is basica…
The evolution of information technology has been driven by the discovery of new forms of large magnetoresistance (MR), such as giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic multilayers. Recently, new types of MR have been observed in much simpler bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic (FM)/nonmagnetic (NM) thin films; however, the magnitude of MR in these materials is very small (0.01 ~ 1%). Here, we demonstrate that NM/FM bilayers consisting of a NM InAs quantum well conductive channel and an insulating FM (Ga,Fe)Sb layer exhibit giant proximity magnetoresista…
The interplay between spin and heat currents at magnetic insulator|nonmagnetic metal interfaces has been a subject of much scrutiny because of both fundamental physics and the promise for technological applications. While ferrimagnetic and, more recently, antiferromagnetic systems have been extensively investigated, a theory generalizing the heat-to-spin interconversion in noncollinear magnets is still lacking. Here, we establish a general framework for thermally-driven spin transport at the interface between a noncollinear magnet and a normal metal. Modeling the interfacial coupling between l…
We study the ac current-driven domain wall motion in bilayer ferromagnetic metal (FM)/nonmagnetic metal (NM) nanowire. The solution of the modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation including all the spin transfer torques is used to describe motion of the domain wall in presence of the spin Hall effect. We show that the domain wall center has second harmonic frequency response in addition to the known first harmonic excitation. In contrast to the experimentally observed second harmonic response in harmonic Hall measurements of spin-orbit torque in magnetic thin films, this second harmonic respo…
Spin-orbit torques in bilayers of ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic materials hold promise for energy efficient switching of magnetization in nonvolatile magnetic memories. Previously studied spin Hall and Rashba torques originate from spin-orbit interactions within the nonmagnetic material and at the bilayer interface, respectively. Here we report a spin-orbit torque that arises from planar Hall current in the ferromagnetic material of the bilayer and acts as either positive or negative magnetic damping. This planar Hall torque exhibits unusual biaxial symmetry in the plane defined by the applied…
We theoretically analyzed the Andreev reflection in ferromagnetic metal/nonmagnetic metal/superconductor double junctions with special attention to the electron interference effect in the nonmagnetic metal layer. We showed that the conductance oscillates as a function of the bias voltage due to the geometrical resonance. We found that the exchange field, and therefore the spin polarization of the ferromagnetic metal can be determined from the period of the conductance oscillation, which is proportional to the square root of the exchange field.
Breaking of the inversion symmetry at the interface between different materials may dramatically enhance spin-orbit interaction in the vicinity of the interface. We incorporate the effects of this interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) into the standard drift-diffusion theory by deriving generalized boundary conditions for diffusion equations. Our theoretical scheme is based on symmetry arguments, providing a natural classification and parametrization of all spin-charge and spin-spin conversion effects that occur due to ISOC at macroscopically isotropic interfaces between nonmagnetic materials…
We study the relation between tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and interfacial electronic states modified by magnetic impurities introduced at the interface of the ferromagnetic tunnel junctions, by making use of the periodic Anderson model and the linear response theory. It is indicated that the TMR ratio is strongly reduced depending on the position of the $d$-levels of impurities, based on reduction in the spin-dependent $s$-electron tunneling in the majority spin state. The results are compared with experimental results for Cr-dusted ferromagnetic tunnel junctions, and also with results for …
The one-dimensional planar magnonic crystals are usually fabricated as a sequence of stripes intentionally or accidentally separated by non-magnetic spacers. The influence of spacers on shaping the spin wave spectra is complex and still not completely clarified. We performed the detailed numerical studies of the one-dimensional single- and bi-component magnonic crystals comprised of a periodic array of thin ferromagnetic stripes separated by non-magnetic spacers. We showed that the dynamic dipolar interactions between the stripes mediated by non-magnetic spacer, even ultra-narrow, significantl…
The spin-polarized transport is investigated in a new type of magnetic tunnel junction which consists of two ferromagnetic electrodes separated by a magnetic barrier and a nonmagnetic metallic spacer. Based on the transfer matrix method and the nearly-free-electron-approximation the dependence of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and electron-spin polarization on the nonmagnetic layer thickness and the applied bias voltage are studied theoretically. The TMR and spin polarization show an oscillatory behavior as a function of the spacer thickness and the bias voltage. The oscillations originate…
We predict a magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling in normal metal|ferromagnetic insulator bilayer. It depends on the angle between current and magnetization directions identically to the "spin Hall magnetoresistance" mechanism caused by a combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects. Due to the identical phenomenology it is not obvious whether the magnetoresistance reported by Nakayama et al. is a bulk metal or interface effect. The interfacial Rashba induced magnetoresistance may be distinguished from the bulk metal spin Hall magnetoresistance …
Considerably different properties emerge in nanomaterials as a result of quantum confinement and edge effects. In this study, the electronic and magnetic properties of quasi zero dimensional silicene nanoflakes (SiNFs) are investigated using first principles calculations. Whilst the zigzag edged hexagonal SiNFs exhibit nonmagnetic semiconducting character, the zigzag edged triangular SiNFs are magnetic semiconductors. One effective method of harnessing the properties of silicene is hydrogenation owing to its reversibility and controllability. From bare SiNFs to half hydrogenated and then to fu…
The temperature and voltage dependence of spin transport is theoretically investigated in a new type of magnetic tunnel junction, which consists of two ferromagnetic outer electrodes separated by a ferromagnetic barrier and a nonmagnetic (NM) metallic spacer. The effect of spin fluctuation in magnetic barrier, which plays an important role at finite temperature, is included by taking the mean-field approximation. It is found that, the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and the electron-spin polarization depend strongly on the temperature and the applied voltage. The TMR and spin polarization at di…
Based on spin-dependent transport theory and thermodynamics, we develop a generalized theory of the Joule heating in the presence of a spin current. Along with the conventional Joule heating consisting of an electric current and electrochemical potential, it is found that the spin current and spin accumulation give an additional dissipation because the spin-dependent scatterings inside bulk and ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic interface lead to a change of entropy. The theory is applied to investigate the dissipation due to pure spin-current generated by spin pumping across a ferromagnetic/nonmagneti…
We show that in the presence of ferromagnetic electronic reservoirs and spin-dependent tunnel couplings, molecular vibrations in nonmagnetic single molecular transistors induce an effective intramolecular exchange magnetic field. It generates a finite spin-accumulation and -precession for the electrons confined on the molecular bridge and occurs under (non)equilibrium conditions. The effective exchange magnetic field is calculated here to lowest order in the tunnel coupling for a nonequilibrium transport setup. Coulomb interaction between electrons is taken into account as well as a finite ele…
Spin-orbit coupling enables charge currents to give rise to spin currents and vice versa, which has applications in non-volatile magnetic memories, miniature microwave oscillators, thermoelectric converters and Terahertz devices. In the past two decades, a considerable amount of research has focused on electrical spin current generation in different types of nonmagnetic materials. However, electrical spin current generation in ferromagnetic materials has only recently been actively investigated. Due to the additional symmetry breaking by the magnetization, ferromagnetic materials generate spin…
A theoretical prediction of the spin-dependent electron self-energy and in-plane transport of a two-dimensional electron gas in proximity with a ferromagnetic gate is presented. The application of the predicted spin-dependent properties is illustrated by the proposal of a device configuration with two neighboring ferromagnetic gates which produces a magnetoresistance effect on the channel current generated by nonmagnetic source and drain contacts. Specific results are shown for a silicon inversion layer with iron gates. The gate leakage current is found to be beneficial to the spin effects.
In this work we focus on magnetic relaxation in Mn$_{80}$Ir$_{20}$(12 nm)/ Cu(6 nm)/ Py($d_\mathrm{F}$) antiferromagnet/Cu/ferromagnet (AFM/Cu/FM) multilayers with different thickness of the ferromagnetic permalloy layer. An effective FM-AFM interaction mediated via the conduction electrons in the nonmagnetic Cu spacer -- the spin-pumping effect -- is detected as an increase in the linewidth of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra and a shift of the resonant magnetic field. We further find experimentally that the spin-pumping-induced contribution to the linewidth is inversely proportional…
Ultrafast THz radiation generation from ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer heterostructure-based spintronic emitters generally exploits the conversion from spin- to charge-current within the nonmagnetic layer and its interface with the ferromagnetic layer. Various possible sub-contributions to the underlying mechanism of inverse spin Hall effect for the THz emission from such structures, need to be exploited for not only investigating the intricacies at the fundamental level in the material properties themselves but also for improving their performance for broadband and high-power THz emission.…
Controlled spin transport in magnetic stacks is required to realize pure spin current-driven logic and memory devices. The control over the generation and detection of the pure spin current is achieved by tuning the spin to charge conversion efficiency of the heavy metal interfacing with ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate the direct tunability of spin angular momentum transfer and thereby spin pumping, in CoFeB/Pt stack, with interfacial magnetic anisotropy. The ultra-low thickness of CoFeB thin film tilts the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane due to surface anisotropy. The Ferr…
We study the magnetization dynamics in thin ferromagnetic films and small ferromagnetic particles in contact with paramagnetic conductors. A moving magnetization vector causes \textquotedblleft pumping\textquotedblright of spins into adjacent nonmagnetic layers. This spin transfer affects the magnetization dynamics similar to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology. The additional Gilbert damping is significant for small ferromagnets, when the nonmagnetic layers efficiently relax the injected spins, but the effect is reduced when a spin accumulation build-up in the normal metal opposes the s…

Electronic transport through a single-wall metallic carbon nanotube weakly coupled to one ferromagnetic and one nonmagnetic lead is analyzed in the sequential tunneling limit. It is shown that both the spin and charge currents flowing through such systems are highly asymmetric with respect to the bias reversal. As a consequence, nanotubes coupled to one nonmagnetic and one ferromagnetic lead can be effectively used as spin diodes whose functionality can be additionally controlled by a gate voltage.
We consider mechanism of exchange coupling based on interaction between electrons in nonmagnetic layer. Depending on ratio of inverse time of diffusion of electrons between ferromagnetic layers and ferromagnetic splitting of conducting electrons this mechanism describes transition from ferromagnetic to noncollinear ordering of magnetizations of ferromagnetic layers.
We study the effect of the ferromagnetic (FM) contacts on the spin accumulation in the lateral spin valve system for the collinear magnetization configurations. When an additional FM electrode is introduced in the all-metallic lateral spin-valve system, we find that the transresistance can be fractionally suppressed or very weakly influenced depending on the position of the additional FM electrode, and relative magnitudes of contact resistance and the bulk resistance defined over the spin diffusion length. Nonlocal spin signals such as nonlocal voltage drop and leakage spin currents are indepe…
Current induced spin-orbit magnetic fields (iSOFs), arising either in single-crystalline ferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry1,2 or in non-magnetic metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers3,4, can produce spin-orbit torques which act on a ferromagnet's magnetization, thus offering an efficient way for its manipulation. To further reduce power consumption in spin-orbit torque devices, it is highly desirable to control iSOFs by the field-effect, where power consumption is determined by charging/discharging a capacitor5,6. In particular, efficient electric-field control of iSOFs acting on ferromag…
New efficient mechanism of obtaining spin polarization in_nonmagnetic_ semiconductors at arbitrary temperutures is described. The effect appears during tunneling of electrons from a nonmagnetic semiconductors (S) into ferromagnet (FM) through a Schottky barrier modified with very thin heavily doped interfacial layer. We show that electrons with a certain spin projection are extracted from S, while electrons with the opposite spins are accumulated in S. The spin density increases and spin penetration depth decreases with current.
Spin-orbit torques offer a promising mechanism for electrically controlling magnetization dynamics in nanoscale heterostructures. While spin-orbit torques occur predominately at interfaces, the physical mechanisms underlying these torques can originate in both the bulk layers and at interfaces. Classifying spin-orbit torques based on the region that they originate in provides clues as to how to optimize the effect. While most bulk spin-orbit torque contributions are well studied, many of the interfacial contributions allowed by symmetry have yet to be fully explored theoretically and experimen…
Dynamic response of spin accumulation to a time-dependent magnetic field has been investigated in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer under ferromagnetic resonance. In this system, magnetization precession driven by a microwave generates direct-current (dc) and alternate-current (ac) spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic layer by the spin pumping. The ac spin accumulation is coupled with the microwave magnetic field through a dynamical Hanle spin precession, giving rise to rectified spin accumulation comparable with the dc spin accumulation directly generated by the spin pumping.
The influence of an asymmetric in-plane magnetic anisotropy on the thermally activated spin current is studied theoretically for two different systems; (i) the system consisting of a ferromagnetic insulator in a direct contact with a nonmagnetic metal, and the sandwich structure consisting of a ferromagnetic insulating part sandwiched between two nonmagnetic metals. It is shown that when the difference between the temperatures of the two nonmagnetic metals in a structure is not large, the spin pumping currents from the magnetic part to the nonmagnetic ones are equal in amplitude and have oppos…
We study the role of thermal magnons in the spin and heat transport across a normal-metal/insulating-ferromagnet interface, which is beyond an elastic electronic spin transfer. Using an interfacial exchange Hamiltonian, which couples spins of itinerant and localized orbitals, we calculate spin and energy currents for an arbitrary interfacial temperature difference and misalignment of spin accumulation in the normal metal relative to the ferromagnetic order. The magnonic contribution to spin current leads to a temperature-dependent torque on the magnetic order parameter; reciprocally, the coher…
Magnon-mediated spin transport across nonmagnetic metal (NM) and ferromagnetic insulator (FI) interface depends critically on electron-magnon coupling. We propose a novel route to enhance electron-magnon coupling dynamically from transport viewpoint. Using non-equilibrium Green's function a theoretical formalism for magnon-mediated spin current is developed. In the language of transport, the effective electron-magnon coupling at NM/FI interface is determined by self-energy of FI lead, which is proportional to density of states (DOS) at NM/FI interface due to nonlinear process of electron-magno…
The spin pumping mechanism and associated interfacial Gilbert damping are demonstrated in ion-beam sputtered Co2FeAl (CFA) /Mo bilayer thin films employing ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The dependence of the net spin current transportation on Mo layer thickness, 0 to 10 nm, and the enhancement of the net effective Gilbert damping are reported. The experimental data has been analyzed using spin pumping theory in terms of spin current pumped through the ferromagnet /nonmagnetic metal interface to deduce the effective spin mixing conductance and the spin-diffusion length, which are estima…
Manipulating spin polarization of electrons in nonmagnetic semiconductors by means of electric fields or optical fields is an essential theme of the conceptual nonmagnetic semiconductor-based spintronics. Here we experimentally demonstrate a method of generating spin polarization in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) by the circularly polarized optical pumping. The fully spin-polarized photocurrent is achieved through the valley dependent optical selection rules and the spin-valley locking in monolayer WS2, and electrically detected by a lateral spin-valve structure with ferromag…
We theoretically investigate inelastic transport through anisotropic magnetic molecules weakly coupled to one ferromagnetic and one nonmagnetic lead. We find that the current is suppressed over wide voltage ranges due to spin blockade. In this system, spin blockade is associated with successive spin flips of the molecular spins and depends on the anisotropy energy barrier. This leads to the appearance of a window of bias voltages between the Coulomb blockade and spin blockade regimes where the current is large and to negative differential conductance at low temperatures. Remarkably, negative d…
By means of first-principles density functional theory calculations, we find that hydrogen-passivated ultrathin silicon nanowires (SiNWs) along [100] direction with symmetrical multiple surface dangling bonds (SDBs) and boron doping can have a half-metallic ground state with 100% spin polarization, where the half-metallicity is shown quite robust against external electric fields. Under the circumstances with various SDBs, the H-passivated SiNWs can also be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic semiconductors. The present study not only offers a possible route to engineer half-metallic SiNWs witho…
Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle configurations in a magnetic film that can act as information carrying bits for ultrasmall, all-electronic nonvolatile memory. The skyrmions can be nucleated and driven by spin-orbit torque from a current driven in a heavy metal underlayer. Along its gyrotropic path, a Magnus force can cause a skyrmion to be annihilated at the boundaries. By combining interfacial and bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs), for instance by using a B20 material on top of a heavy metal layer with high spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to engineer a hybrid skyrmion th…
