Experimental investigations of spin-charge interconversion in magnetic bilayers comprising a ferromagnet adjacent to a topological insulator have reported scattered results on the spin-charge and charge-spin conversion efficiency. Attempting to reconcile these contradicting experimental results, we develop a phenomenological theory of spin-charge interconversion accounting for both interfacial interconversion through the spin galvanic effect, also called the Rashba-Edelstein effect, as well as bulk interconversion via the spin Hall effect. We find that the spin current leakage into the nonmagnetic metal plays a central role during the spin-to-charge and charge-to-spin conversion, leading to dissymmetric interconversion processes. In particular, spin-to-charge conversion is much less sensitive to the spin current absorption in the nonmagnetic metal than charge-to-spin conversion. This suggests that spin pumping is a more trustable technique to extract the interfacial Rashba parameter than spin-orbit torque.
Spin current has emerged as a leading candidate for manipulation of spins in a nano-magnet. We here experimentally show another utility of spin current viz. it can be used for generation of phonons. Within the same experimental setup, we also demonstrate the inverse effect of generation of spin current by phonons. To demonstrate them, we measured the scattering-matrix of a two-port device with interdigital transducers as one port and array of Ni/Pt lines as second port on piezoelectric substrate. The off-diagonal elements which correspond to transmission between the ports, were found to have 1…
We investigate the Thomson-Onsager relation between the spin-dependent Seebeck and spin-dependent Peltier effect. To maintain identical device and measurement conditions we measure both effects in a single Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Cu/Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ nanopillar spin valve device subjected to either an electrical or a thermal bias. In the low bias regime, we observe similar spin signals as well as background responses, as required by the Onsager reciprocity relation. However, at large biases, deviation from reciprocity occurs due to dominant nonlinear contribution of the temperature dependent trans…
We construct a local gauge transformation to show how, in confined systems, a generic, weak nonhomogeneous SU(2) spin-orbit Hamiltonian reduces to two U(1) Hamiltonians for spinless fermions at opposite magnetic fields, to leading order in the spin-orbit strength. Using an Onsager relation, we further show how the resulting spin conductance vanishes in a two-terminal setup, and how it is turned on by either weakly breaking time-reversal symmetry or opening additional transport terminals. We numerically check our theory for mesoscopic cavities as well as Aharonov-Bohm rings.
Hamiltonian systems can be classified into ten classes, in terms of the presence or absence of time-reversal symmetry, particle-hole symmetry and sublattice/chiral symmetry. We construct a quantum coherent scattering theory of linear transport for coupled electric, heat and spin transport; including the effect of Andreev reflection from superconductors. We derive a complete list of the Onsager reciprocity relations between transport coefficients for coupled electric, spin, thermoelectric and spin caloritronic effects. We apply these to all ten symmetry classes, paying special attention to spec…
Scanning photocurrent maps in inhomogeneous materials contain nontrivial patterns, which often can only be understood with a full model of device geometry and nonuniformities. We remark on the consequences of Onsager reciprocity to the photocurrent in linear response, with immediate applications in photovoltaic and photothermoelectric effects. In particular with photothermoelectric effects, we find that the ampere-per-watt responsivity is exactly governed by Peltier-induced temperature shifts in the same device when time-reversed and voltage-biased. We show, with the example of graphene, that …

We study thermal and charge transport in a three-terminal setup consisting of one superconducting and two ferromagnetic contacts. We predict that the simultaneous presence of spin filtering and of spin- dependent scattering phase shifts at each of the two interfaces will lead to very large nonlocal thermo- electric effects both in clean and in disordered systems. The symmetries of thermal and electric transport coefficients are related to fundamental thermodynamic principles by the Onsager reciprocity. Our results show that a nonlocal version of the Onsager relations for thermoelectric current…
Spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two reciprocal phenomena widely studied in ferromagnetic materials. However, pumping from antiferromagnets and its relation to current-induced torques have not been explored. By calculating how electrons scatter off a normal metal-antiferromagnetic interface, we derive pumped spin and staggered spin currents in terms of the staggered field, the magnetization, and their rates of change. For both compensated and uncompensated interfaces, spin pumping is of a similar magnitude as in ferromagnets with a direction controlled by the polarization of the driv…
Spin pumping is the emission of a spin current by a magnetization dynamics while spin transfer stands for the excitation of magnetization by spin currents. Using Onsager's reciprocity relations we prove that spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two fundamentally equivalent dynamic processes in magnetic structures with itinerant electrons. We review the theory of the coupled motion of the magnetization order parameter and electron for textured bulk ferromagnets (e.g. containing domain walls) and heterostructures (such as spin valves). We present first-principles calculations for the mater…
The angular dependence of the thermal transport in insulating or conducting ferromagnets is derived on the basis of the Onsager reciprocity relations applied to a magnetic system. It is shown that the angular dependence of the temperature gradient takes the same form as that of the anisotropic magnetoresistance, including anomalous and planar Hall contributions. The measured thermocouple generated between the extremities of the non-magnetic electrode in thermal contact to the ferromagnet follows this same angular dependence. The sign and amplitude of the magneto-voltaic signal is controlled by…
Large heat currents are obtained in Co/Cu/Co spin valves positioned at the middle of Cu nanowires. The second harmonic voltage response to an applied current is used to investigate the effect of the heat current on the switching of the spin valves. Both the switching field and the magnitude of the voltage response are found to be dependent on the heat current. These effects are evidence for a thermal spin transfer torque acting on the magnetization and are accounted for by a thermodynamic model in which heat, charge and spin currents are linked by Onsager reciprocity relations.
We develop a theory for spin transported by coherent Neel dynamics through an antiferromagnetic insulator coupled to a ferromagnetic insulator on one side and a current-carrying normal metal with strong spin-orbit coupling on the other. The ferromagnet is considered within the mono-domain limit and we assume its coupling to the local antiferromagnet Neel order at the ferromagnet|antiferromagnet interface through exchange coupling. Coupling between the charge current and the local Neel order at the other interface is described using spin Hall phenomenology. Spin transport through the antiferrom…
Discovery of topological Weyl semimetals has revealed the opportunities to realize several extraordinary physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Specifically, these semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling, broken inversion symmetry and novel spin texture are predicted to exhibit a large spin Hall effect that can efficiently convert the charge current to a spin current. Here we report the direct experimental observation of a large spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects in Weyl semimetal WTe2 at room temperature obeying Onsager reciprocity relation. We demonstrate the detection of th…
We study the spin-transfer drag mediated by the Brownian motion of skyrmions. The essential idea is illustrated in a two-terminal geometry, in which a thin film of a magnetic insulator is placed in between two metallic reservoirs. An electric current in one of the terminals pumps topological charge into the magnet via a spin-transfer torque. The charge diffuses over the bulk of the system as stable skyrmion textures. By Onsager's reciprocity, the topological charge leaving the magnet produces an electromotive force in the second terminal. The voltage signal decays algebraically with the separa…
We present a microscopic theory of spin-dependent motive force ("spin motive force") induced by magnetization dynamics in a conducting ferromagnet, by taking account of spin relaxation of conduction electrons. The theory is developed by calculating spin and charge transport driven by two kinds of gauge fields; one is the ordinary electromagnetic field $A^{\rm em}_μ$, and the other is the effective gauge field $A^{z}_μ$ induced by dynamical magnetic texture. The latter acts in the spin channel and gives rise to a spin motive force. It is found that the current induced as a linear response to $A…
Understanding the evolution of spin-orbit torque (SOT) with increasing heavy-metal thickness in ferromagnet/normal metal (FM/NM) bilayers is critical for the development of magnetic memory based on SOT. However, several experiments have revealed an apparent discrepancy between damping enhancement and damping-like SOT regarding their dependence on NM thickness. Here, using linewidth and phase-resolved amplitude analysis of vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) measurements, we simultaneously extract damping enhancement and both field-like and damping-like inverse SOT in Ni$_…

It is well known that a current driven through a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling induces a spin polarization in the perpendicular direction (Edelstein effect). This phenomenon has been extensively studied in the linear response regime, i.e., when the average drift velocity of the electrons is a small fraction of the Fermi velocity. Here we investigate the phenomenon in the nonlinear regime, meaning that the average drift velocity is comparable to, or exceeds the Fermi velocity. This regime is realized when the electric field is very large, or when electron-impurity…
