Magnetization dynamic response of coupled and uncoupled spin valves with structure NiFe(20 nm)/Cu(t_Cu)/NiFe(20 nm)/IrMn(10nm) were probed using broadband ferromagnetic resonance absorption measurements. By varying the Cu thickness t_Cu we were able to tailor the coupling intensity between the free and pinned layers. Broadband spectra show two resonant modes for each measured field. It is noticed that the coupling among NiFe layers modifies the amplitude of the absorption peaks and, moreover, the dispersion relations of the modes, which are distorted specially at the anti-parallel state. A numerical model is proposed and applied to address the underlying physics and the observed properties of these systems.
We study how a bias voltage changes magnetic exchange interactions. We derive a general expression for magnetic exchange interactions for systems coupled to reservoirs under a bias potential, and apply it to spin valves. We find that for metallic systems, the interlayer exchange coupling shows a weak, oscillatory dependence on the bias potential. For tunneling systems, we find a quadratic dependence on the bias potential, and derive an approximate expression for this bias dependence for a toy model. We give general conditions for when the interlayer exchange coupling is a quadratic function of…
We study the magnetic damping in the simplest of synthetic antiferromagnets, i.e. antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled spin valves in which applied magnetic fields tune the magnetic configuration to become noncollinear. We formulate the dynamic exchange of spin currents in a noncollinear texture based on the spindiffusion theory with quantum mechanical boundary conditions at the ferrromagnet|normal-metal interfaces and derive the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations coupled by the static interlayer non-local and the dynamic exchange interactions. We predict non-collinearity-induced additional d…
We demonstrate first measurements of successful spin generation in crystalline Co$_2$FeSi/MgO/GaAs hybrid structures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), with different MgO interlayer thicknesses. Using non-local spin valve and non-local Hanle measurement configurations, we determine spin lifetimes of ${τ\approx 100}$~ns and spin diffusion lengths of ${λ\approx 5.6}$~$μ$m for different MgO layer thicknesses proving the high quality of the GaAs transport channel. For an optimized MgO layer thickness, the bias dependence of the spin valve signals indicates the verification of the half-metallic…
Current-induced dynamics in spin valves including composite free layer with antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling is studied theoretically within the diffusive transport regime. We show that current-induced dynamics of a synthetic antiferromagnet is significantly different from dynamics of a synthetic ferrimagnet. From macrospin simulations we obtain conditions for switching the composite free layer, as well as for appearance of various self-sustained dynamical modes. Numerical simulations are compared with simple analytical models of critical current based on linearized Landau-Lifshi…
We investigate heat and charge transport through a diffusive SIF1F2N tunnel junction, where N (S) is a normal (superconducting) electrode, I is an insulator layer and F1,2 are two ferromagnets with arbitrary direction of magnetization. The flow of an electric current in such structures at subgap bias is accompanied by a heat transfer from the normal metal into the superconductor, which enables refrigeration of electrons in the normal metal. We demonstrate that the refrigeration efficiency depends on the strength of the ferromagnetic exchange field h and the angle α between the magnetizations o…
According to the recent experiment by the Fert group, the velocity of domain wall motion in the spin valve ferromagnetic nanowires was almost doubly enhanced compared to the old value. In this work, we propose an additional torque model, arising from the interlayer exchange interaction, which can enhance or suppress the domain wall velocity depending on the sign of the exchange constant or the wall motion direction relative to the magnetization orientation of the fixed layer.
Beyond-diffraction-limit optical absorption spectroscopy provides profound information on the graded band structures of composition-spread and stacked two-dimensional materials, in which direct/indirect bandgap, interlayer coupling, sliding, and possible defects significantly modify their optoelectronic functionalities such as photoluminescence efficiency. We here visualize the spatially-varying band structure of monolayer and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide alloys for the first time by using near-field broadband absorption microscopy. The near-field-spectral and -spatial diagrams mani…
Two ferromagnetic layers magnetically decoupled by a thick normal metal spacer layer can be, nevertheless, dynamically coupled via spin currents emitted by the spin-pump and absorbed through the spin-torque effects at the neighboring interfaces. A decrease of damping in both layers due to a partial compensation of the angular momentum leakage in each layer was previously observed at the coincidence of the two ferromagnetic resonances. In case of non-zero magnetic coupling, such a dynamic exchange will depend on the mutual precession of the magnetic moments in the layers. A difference in the li…
The oscillatory interlayer exchange interaction between two magnetic layers separated by a metallic spacer is one of the few coherent quantum phenomena that persist at room temperature. Here we show that this interaction can be controlled dynamically by illuminating the sample (e.g. a spin valve) with radiation in the 10-100 THz range. We predict that the exchange interaction can be changed from ferromagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic (and vice versa) by tuning the amplitude and/or the frequency of the radiation. Our chief theoretical result is an expression that relates the dynamical exchange int…
Recent demonstrations of magnetic ordering and spin transport in two-dimensional heterostructures have opened research venues in these material systems. In order to control and enhance the related physical phenomena, quantitative descriptions linking experimental observations to atomic details must be produced. Here we combine first principles and quantum ballistic transport calculations to shed important insights from an atomistic viewpoint on the underlying mechanisms governing spin transport in graphene/CrI$_3$ junctions. Descriptions of the electronic structure reveal that tunneling is the…
We study the magnetization dynamics of spin valve structures with a free composite synthetic ferromagnet (SyF) that consists of two ferromagnetic layers coupled through a normal metal spacer. A ferromagnetically coupled SyF can be excited into dynamical precessional states by an applied current without external magnetic fields. We analytically determine the stability of these states in the space spanned by the current density and SyF interlayer exchange coupling. Numerical simulations confirm our analytical results.
Interlayer twist between van der Waals graphene crystals led to the discovery of superconducting and insulating states near the magic angle. In this work, we exploit this mechanical degree of freedom by twisting the graphene middle layer in a trilayer graphene spacer between two metallic lead (Magnetic and nonmagnetic). A large difference in conductance is found depending on the angle of twist between the middle layer graphene and the ones at the interface this difference, called twisting resistance, reach more than 1000% in the non-magnetic Cu case. For the magnetic Ni case, the magneto-resis…
In-situ, device level measurement of thermal mag-noise spectral linewidths in 60nm diameter CPP-GMR spin-valve stacks of IrMn/ref/Cu/free, with reference and free layer of similar CoFe/CoFeGe alloy, are used to simultaneously determine the intrinsic Gilbert damping for both magnetic layers. It is shown that careful alignment at a "magic-angle" between free and reference layer static equilibrium magnetization can allow direct measurement of the broadband intrinsic thermal spectra in the virtual absence of spin-torque effects which otherwise grossly distort the spectral line shapes and require l…
We investigate yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/cobalt (Co) heterostructures using broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). We observe an efficient excitation of perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in the YIG layer when the resonance frequencies of the YIG PSSWs and the Co FMR line coincide. Avoided crossings of YIG PSSWs and the Co FMR line are found and modeled using mutual spin pumping and exchange torques. The excitation of PSSWs is suppressed by a thin aluminum oxide (AlOx) interlayer but persists with a copper (Cu) interlayer, in agreement with the proposed model.
Magnetic thin films at ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) leak angular momentum, which may be absorbed by adjacent layers. This phenomenon, known as spin pumping, is manifested by an increase in the resonance linewidth ($ΔH$), and the closely related Gilbert damping. Another effect of this transfer of spin currents is a dynamical and long-range coupling that can drive two magnetic layers into a collective precession when their FMR frequencies coincide. A collective behavior is also found in magnetic trilayers with interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). In this study we investigate the interplay betwee…
Broadband magnetization response of coupled vortex state magnetic dots in layered nanopillars was explored as a function of in-plane magnetic field and interlayer separation. For dipolarly coupled circular Py(25 nm)/Cu(20 nm)/Py(25 nm) nanopillars of 600 nm diameter, a small in-plane field splits the eigenfrequencies of azimuthal spin wave modes inducing an abrupt transition between in-phase and out-of-phase kinds of the low-lying coupled spin wave modes. The critical field for this splitting is determined by antiparallel chiralities of the vortices in the layers. Qualitatively similar (althou…
This work provides a detailed investigation of the measured in-plane field-swept homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of an extended Co/Cu/NiFe pseudo spin valve stack using a nanocontact (NC) geometry. The magnetodynamics are generated by a pulse-modulated microwave current and the resulting rectified dc mixing voltage, which appears across the NC at resonance, is detected using a lock-in amplifier. Most notably, we find that the measured spectra of the NiFe layer are composite in nature and highly asymmetric, consistent with the broadband excitation of multiple modes. Addi…
We report broadband microwave absorption spectroscopy of the layered antiferromagnet CrCl3. We observe a rich structure of resonances arising from quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic dynamics. Due to the weak interlayer magnetic coupling in this material, we are able to observe both optical and acoustic branches of antiferromagnetic resonance in the GHz frequency range and a symmetry-protected crossing between them. By breaking rotational symmetry, we further show that strong magnon-magnon coupling with large tunable gaps can be induced between the two resonant modes.
Information technology demands high-speed optoelectronic devices, but going beyond the one terahertz (THz) barrier is challenging due to the difficulties associated with generating, detecting, and processing high-frequency signals. Here, we show that femtosecond-laser-driven phonons can be utilized to coherently manipulate the excitonic properties of semiconductors at THz frequencies. The precise control of the pump and subsequent time-delayed broadband probe pulses enables the simultaneous generation and detection processes of both periodic lattice vibrations and their couplings with electron…
