We study the nonlocal spin transport in a lateral spin valve with multiple ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. When two current-injecting and two spin current-detecting electrodes are all ferromagnetic, the number of possible nonlocal spin signal states is four at maximum. In reality, this number is reduced, depending on the inter-probe distance and the relative magnitudes of the spin resistances. Our theoretical results are in agreement with recent experiments of spin injection into an Al island, a carbon nanotube, and graphene.
The spin absorption process in a ferromagnetic material depends on the spin orientation relativelyto the magnetization. Using a ferromagnet to absorb the pure spin current created within a lateralspin-valve, we evidence and quantify a sizeable orientation dependence of the spin absorption inCo, CoFe and NiFe. These experiments allow determining the spin-mixing conductance, an elusivebut fundamental parameter of the spin-dependent transport. We show that the obtained valuescannot be understood within a model considering only the Larmor, transverse decoherence and spindiffusion lengths, and rath…
We present the analysis of the spin signals obtained in NiFe based metallic lateral spin valves. We exploit the spin dependent diffusive equations in both the conventional 1D analytic modeling as well as in 3D Finite Element Method simulations. Both approaches are used for extracting the spin diffusion length $l_{sf}^{N}$ and the effective spin polarization $P_{eff}$ in Py/Al, Py/Cu and Py/Au based lateral nano-structures at both $300\,K$ and $77\,K$. Both the analytic modeling and 3D Finite Element Method simulations give consistent results. Combination of both models provides a powerful tool…
We find extraordinary behavior of the local two-terminal spin accumulation signals in ferromagnet (FM)/semiconductor (SC) lateral spin-valve devices. With respect to the bias voltage applied between two FM/SC Schottky tunnel contacts, the local spin-accumulation signal can show nonmonotonic variations, including a sign inversion. A part of the nonmonotonic features can be understood qualitatively by considering the rapid reduction in the spin polarization of the FM/SC interfaces with increasing bias voltage. In addition to the sign inversion of the FM/SC interface spin polarization, the influe…
We demonstrate first measurements of successful spin generation in crystalline Co$_2$FeSi/MgO/GaAs hybrid structures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), with different MgO interlayer thicknesses. Using non-local spin valve and non-local Hanle measurement configurations, we determine spin lifetimes of ${τ\approx 100}$~ns and spin diffusion lengths of ${λ\approx 5.6}$~$μ$m for different MgO layer thicknesses proving the high quality of the GaAs transport channel. For an optimized MgO layer thickness, the bias dependence of the spin valve signals indicates the verification of the half-metallic…
We investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of a lateral spin-valve device with a 600 nm-long GaAs channel and ferromagnetic MnGa electrodes with perpendicular magnetization. Its current-voltage characteristics show nonlinear behavior below 50 K, indicating that tunnel transport through the MnGa/GaAs Schottky barrier is dominant at low temperatures. We observed clear magnetoresistance (MR) ratio up to 12% at 4 K when applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the film plane. Furthermore, a large spin-dependent output voltage of 33 mV is obtained. These values are the highest in lat…
We present measurements of pure spin current absorption on lateral spin valves. By varying the width of the absorber we demonstrate that spin current absorption measurements enable to characterize efficiently the spin transport properties of ferromagnetic elements. The analytical model used to describe the measurement takes into account the polarization of the absorber. The analysis of the measurements allows thus determining the polarization and the spin diffusion length of a studied material independently, contrarily to most experiments based on lateral spin valves where those values are ent…
To augment the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of n-type non-degenerate Si-based lateral spin valves (Si-LSVs), we modify the doping profile in the Si layer and introduce a larger local strain into the Si channel by changing a capping insulator. The highest MR ratio of 1.4% is achieved in the Si-LSVs through these improvements, with significant roles played by a reduction in the resistance-area product of the ferromagnetic contacts and an enhancement of the momentum relaxation time in the Si channel.
Estimation of the spin polarization for Heusler-compound thin films by means of nonlocal spin-valve measurements: Comparison of Co$_{2}$FeSi and Fe$_{3}$Si
We studied metastable $α$-FeGe$_2$, a novel layered tetragonal material, embedded as a spacer layer in spin valve structures with ferromagnetic Fe$_3$Si and Co$_2$FeSi electrodes. For both types of electrodes, spin valve operation is demonstrated with a metallic transport behavior of the $α$-FeGe$_2$ spacer layer. The spin valve signals are found to increase both with temperature and spacer thickness, which is discussed in terms of a decreasing magnetic coupling strength between the ferromagnetic bottom and top electrodes. The temperature-dependent resistances of the spin valve structures exhi…
Lateral spin valves are used to generate and characterize pure spin currents. Non-local voltage measured in such structures provides information about spin polarization and spin decay rates. For wide high-transparency F/N contacts it was shown that the Johnson-Silsbee non-local effect is substantially enriched by closed-loop electric currents driven by local spin injection in the electrically dangling part of the valve. For valves with low-transparency F/I/N tunnel contacts such circular currents are strongly suppressed, yet we show that the voltage modifications persist, may be significant, a…

Electric-field control of magnetism via inverse magnetostrictive effect is an efficient path towards improving energy-efficient storage and sensing devices based on giant magnetoresistance effect. In this letter, we report on lateral electric-field driven strain-mediated modulation of magnetic properties in Co$/$Cu$/$Py pseudo spin valve grown on ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate. We show a decrease of the giant magnetoresistance ratio of the pseudo spin valve with increasing electric field, which is attributed to the deviation of the Co layer magnetization from the initial direction due to strai…
The discovery of van der Waals (vdW) magnets opened up a new paradigm for condensed matter physics and spintronic technologies. However, the operations of active spintronic devices with vdW magnets are so far limited to cryogenic temperatures, inhibiting its broader practical applications. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate room temperature spin-valve devices using vdW itinerant ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 in heterostructures with graphene. The tunnel spin polarization of the Fe5GeTe2/graphene vdW interface is detected to be significantly large ~ 45 % and negative at room temperature. Lateral s…
Dependence of tunnel magnetoresistance on ferromagnetic electrode materials in MgO-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions
The high performance of hybrid perovskite based devices is attributed to its excellent bulk-transport properties. However, carrier dynamics, especially at the metal-perovskite interface, and its influence on device operation are not widely understood. This work presents the dominant transport mechanisms in methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite-based asymmetric metal-electrode lateral devices. The device operation is studied with inter-electrode lengths varying from 4 μm to 120 μm. Device characteristics indicate distinct ohmic and space-charge limited current (SCLC) regimes that are c…
Van der Waals magnets have emerged as a fertile ground for the exploration of highly tunable spin physics and spin-related technology. Two-dimensional (2D) magnons in van der Waals magnets are collective excitation of spins under strong confinement. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding 2D magnons, a crucial magnon device called the van der Waals magnon valve, in which the magnon signal can be completely and repeatedly turned on and off electrically, has yet to be realized. Here we demonstrate such magnon valves based on van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3. …
