Let $(M, g)$, $(N, h)$ be compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary, and let $f$ be a smooth map from $M$ into $N$. We consider a covariant symmetric tensor $T_f$ $=$ ${\displaystyle f^*h - \frac{1}{m} |df|^2 g}$, where $f^*h$ denotes the pull-back metric of $h$ by $f$. The tensor $T_f$ vanishes if and only if the map $f$ is weakly conformal. The norm $|T_f|$ is a quantity which is a measure of conformality of $f$ at each point. We are concerned with maps which are critical points of the functional $Φ(f)$ $=$ ${\displaystyle \int_M |T_f|^2dv_g}$. We call such maps {\it C-stationary maps}. Any conformal map or more generally any weakly conformal map is a C-stationary map. It is of interest to find when a C-stationary map is a (weakly) conformal map.
In this paper we prove the following result. If $f$ is a stable C-stationary maps from the standard sphere ${\mathrm S}^m$ $(m \geq 5)$ or into the standard sphere ${\mathrm S}^n$ $(n \geq 5)$, then $f$ is a weakly conformal map.
We prove the equivalence of several natural notions of conformal maps between sub-Riemannian manifolds. Our main contribution is in the setting of those manifolds that support a suitable regularity theory for subelliptic $p$-Laplacian operators. For such manifolds we prove a Liouville-type theorem, i.e., 1-quasiconformal maps are smooth. In particular, we prove that contact manifolds support the suitable regularity. The main new technical tools are a sub-Riemannian version of p-harmonic coordinates and a technique of propagation of regularity from horizontal layers.
We establish a connection between two previously unrelated topics: a particular discrete version of conformal geometry for triangulated surfaces, and the geometry of ideal polyhedra in hyperbolic three-space. Two triangulated surfaces are considered discretely conformally equivalent if the edge lengths are related by scale factors associated with the vertices. This simple definition leads to a surprisingly rich theory featuring Möbius invariance, the definition of discrete conformal maps as circumcircle preserving piecewise projective maps, and two variational principles. We show how literally…
Let $(M, J^α, α=1,2,3)$ and $(N, {\cal J}^α, α=1,2,3)$ be Hyperkähler manifolds. Suppose that $u_k$ is a sequence of stationary quaternionic maps and converges weakly to $u$ in $H^{1,2}(M,N)$, we derive a blow-up formula for $\lim_{k\to\infty}d(u_k^*{\cal J}^α)$, for $α=1,2,3$, in the weak sense. As a corollary, we show that the maps constructed by Chen-Li [CL2] and by Foscolo [F] can not be tangent maps (c.f [LT], Theorem 3.1) of a stationary quaternionic map satisfing $d(u^*{\cal J}^α)=0$.
Concerning the value distribution problem for generalized Gauss maps, we not only generalize Fujimoto's theorem to complete space-like stationary surfaces in Minkowski spacetime, but also estimate the upper bound of the number of exceptional values when the Gauss image lies in the graph of a rational function f of degree m, showing a sharp contrast to Bernstein type results for minimal surfaces in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. Moreover, we introduce the conception of conjugate similarity on the special linear group to classify all degenerate stationary surfaces (i.e. m=0 or 1), and establish …
We study a generalized functional related to the pullback metrics (3). We derive the first variation formula which yield stationary maps. We introduce the stress-energy tensor which is naturally linked to conservation law and yield monotonicity formula via the coarea formula and comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry. A version of this monotonicity inequalities enables us to derive some Liouville type results. Also we investigate the constant Dirichlet boundary value problems and the generalized Chern type results for tension field equation with respect to this functional.
We study the asymptotics as $p\uparrow 2$ of stationary $p$-harmonic maps $u_p\in W^{1,p}(M,S^1)$ from a compact manifold $M^n$ to $S^1$, satisfying the natural energy growth condition $$\int_M|du_p|^p=O(\frac{1}{2-p}).$$ Along a subsequence $p_j\to 2$, we show that the singular sets $Sing(u_{p_j})$ converge to the support of a stationary, rectifiable $(n-2)$-varifold $V$ of density $Θ_{n-2}(\|V\|,\cdot)\geq 2π$, given by the concentrated part of the measure $$μ=\lim_{j\to\infty}(2-p_j)|du_{p_j}|^{p_j}dv_g.$$ When $n=2$, we show moreover that the density of $\|V\|$ takes values in $2π\mathbb{N…

In this paper we prove quantitative regularity results for stationary and minimizing extrinsic biharmonic maps. As an application, we determine sharp, dimension independent $L^p$ bounds for $\nabla^k f$ that do not require a small energy hypothesis. In particular, every minimizing biharmonic map is in $W^{4,p}$ for all $1\le p<5/4$. Further, for minimizing biharmonic maps from $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^5$, we determine a uniform bound on the number of singular points in a compact set. Finally, using dimension reduction arguments, we extend these results to minimizing and stationary biharmonic maps …
In this article, we study the regularity of minimizing and stationary $p$-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. The aim is obtaining Minkowski-type volume estimates on the singular set $S(f)=\{x \ \ s.t. \ \ f \text{ is not continuous at } x\}$, as opposed to the weaker and non quantitative Hausdorff dimension bounds currently available in literature for generic $p$. The main technique used in this paper is the quantitative stratification, which is based on the study of the approximate symmetries of the tangent maps of $f$. In this article, we generalize the study carried out in \cite{Ch…
In this paper we study the regularity of stationary and minimizing harmonic maps $f:B_2(p)\subseteq M\to N$ between Riemannian manifolds. If $S^k(f)\equiv\{x\in M: \text{ no tangent map at $x$ is }k+1\text{-symmetric}\}$ is $k^{th}$-stratum of the singular set of $f$, then it is well known that $\dim S^k\leq k$, however little else about the structure of $S^k(f)$ is understood in any generality. Our first result is for a general stationary harmonic map, where we prove that $S^k(f)$ is $k$-rectifiable. In the case of minimizing harmonic maps we go further, and prove that the singular set $S(f)$…

We show the smoothness of weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from a closed spin Riemann surface into stationary Lorentzian manifolds, and obtain a regularity theorem for a class of critical elliptic systems without anti-symmetry structures.
We consider triholomorphic maps from an almost hyper-Hermitian manifold $\mathcal{M}^{4m}$ into a hyperKähler manifold $\mathcal{N}^{4n}$. This means that $u \in W^{1,2}$ satisfies a quaternionic del-bar equation. We work under the assumption that $u$ is locally strongly approximable in $W^{1,2}$ by smooth maps: then such maps are almost stationary harmonic (when $\mathcal{M}$ is hyperKähler as well, then stationary harmonic). We show that in this more general situation the classical $ε$-regularity result still holds. We then address compactness issues for a weakly converging sequence $u_\ell …
In a recent paper the author introduced a new method based on viscosity techniques for producing minimal surfaces by minmax arguments. The present work corresponds to the regularity part of the method. Precisely we establish that any weakly conformal $W^{1,2}$ map from a riemann surface $S$ into a closed oriented sub-manifold $N^n$ of an euclidian space ${\mathbb R}^m$ realizes a stationary varifold if and only if it is a smooth conformal harmonic map form $S$ into $N^n$.
