We propose a model of boundary interaction, with three-dimensional target space, and the boundary values of the field {\vec X}\in R^3 constrained to lay on a two-dimensional surface of the "pillow" shape. We argue that the model is integrable, and suggest that its exact solution is described in terms of certain linear ordinary differential equation.
The symmetry preserving D-branes in coset theories have previously been described as being centered around projections of products of conjugacy classes in the underlying Lie groups. Here, we investigate the coset where a diagonal action of SU(2) is divided out from SU(2)\times SU(2). The corresponding target space is described as a (3-dimensional) pillow with four distinguished corners. It is shown that the (fractional) brane which corresponds to the fixed point that arises in the CFT description, is spacefilling. Moreover, the spacefilling brane is the only one that reaches all of the corners…
We elucidate how integrable lattice models described by Costello's 4d Chern-Simons theory can be realized via a stack of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane in type IIA string theory, with D0-branes on the D4-brane worldvolume sourcing a meromorphic RR 1-form, and fundamental strings forming the lattice. This provides us with a nonperturbative integration cycle for the 4d Chern-Simons theory, and by applying T- and S-duality, we show how the R-matrix, the Yang-Baxter equation and the Yangian can be categorified, that is, obtained via the Hilbert space of a 6d gauge theory.
This is a brief review of my work on the correspondence between four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric field theories realized by brane tilings and two-dimensional integrable lattice models. I explain how to construct integrable lattice models from extended operators in partially topological quantum field theories, and elucidate the correspondence as an application of this construction.
We study a model of 2D QFT with boundary interaction, in which two-component massless Bose field is constrained to a circle at the boundary. We argue that this model is integrable at two values of the topological angle, $θ=0$ and $θ=π$. For $θ=0$ we propose exact partition function in terms of solutions of ordinary linear differential equation. The circular brane model is equivalent to the model of quantum Brownian dynamics commonly used in describing the Coulomb charging in quantum dots, in the limit of small dimensionless resistance $g_0$ of the tunneling contact. Our proposal translates to …
We search for integrable boundary conditions and their geometric interpretation as $D$-branes, in models constructed as generalized $λ$-deformations of products of group- and coset-spaces. Using the sigma-model approach, we find that all the conformal brane geometries known in the literature for a product of WZW models solve the corresponding boundary conditions, thus persisting as integrable branes along the RG flows of our sigma-models. They consist of the well known $G$-conjugacy classes, twisted $G$-conjugacy classes by a permutation automorphism (permutation branes) and generalized permut…
We consider the worldsheet boundary scattering and the corresponding boundary algebras for the Z=0 giant graviton and the Z=0 D7-brane in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two approaches to the boundary scattering, the usual one governed by the (generalized) twisted Yangians and the q-deformed model of these boundaries governed by the quantum affine coideal subalgebras. We show that the q-deformed approach leads to boundary algebras that are of a more compact form than the corresponding twisted Yangians, and thus are favourable to use for explicit calculations. We obtain the q-deformed r…
In this note it is demonstrated how the Seiberg-Witten solutions and related integrable systems may arise from certain brane configurations in M-theory. Some subtleties of the formulation of the Seiberg-Witten theory via integrable systems are discussed and interpreted along the lines of general picture of string/M-theory dualities.
The reduction of higher dimensional supergravities to low dimensional dilaton gravity theories is outlined. Then a recently proposed new class of integrable theories of 0+1 and 1+1 dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to any number of scalar fields is described in more detail. These models are reducible to systems of independent Liouville equations whose solutions are not independent because they must satisfy the energy and momentum constraints. The constraints are solved, thus giving the explicit analytic solution of the theory in terms of arbitrary chiral fields. In particular, these integrab…
We suggest the brane interpretation of the integrable dynamics behind the exact solution to the N=2 SUSY YM theory. Degrees of freedom of the Calogero type integrable system responsible for the appearance of the spectral Riemann surfaces originate from the collective coordinates of the dynamical branes. The second Whitham type integrable system corresponds to the low energy scattering of branes similar to the scattering of the magnetic monopoles.
We discuss supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with the multiple scales in the brane language. The issue concerns N=2 SUSY gauge theories with massive fundamental matter including the UV finite case of $n_{f}=2n_c$, theories involving products of SU(n) gauge groups with bifundamental matter, and the systems with several parameters similar to $Λ_{QCD}$. We argue that the proper integrable systems are, accordingly, twisted XXX SL(2) spin chain, $SL(p)$ magnets and degenerations of the spin Calogero system. The issue of symmetries underlying integrable systems is addressed. Relations with the mono…
We discuss the brane interpretation of the integrable dynamics behind the exact solution to the N=2 SUSY YM theory. Degrees of freedom in the first integrable system responsible for the spectral Riemann surfaces comes from the hidden Higgs branch of the moduli space. The second integrable system of the Whitham type yields the dynamics on the Coulomb branch and can be considered as the scattering of branes.
Five and six dimensional SUSY gauge theories, with one or two compactified directions, are discussed. The 5d theories with the matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation are associated with the twisted $XXZ$ spin chain, while the group product case with the bi-fundamental matter corresponds to the higher rank spin chains. The Riemann surfaces for $6d$ theories with fundamental matter and two compact directions are proposed to correspond to the $XYZ$ spin chain based on the Sklyanin algebra. We also discuss the obtained results within the brane and geometrical engeneering framewor…
This thesis follows two main lines of research, both related to relevant aspects of string theory and its phenomenological/cosmological applications. We study two different generalizations of the integrable SG model to NC geometry, after discussing general properties and issues of integrable theories and NC field theories, mentioning their role in string theory. The question is whether we can obtain an integrable NC SG with factorized S matrix. Of the two models we study, the second NC SG -- derived by dimensional reduction from the stringy NC self-dual YM in (2+2) dimensions -- exhibits the g…
Motivated by the search for new backgrounds with integrable string theories, we classify the D-brane geometries leading to integrable geodesics. Our analysis demonstrates that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for massless geodesics can only separate in elliptic or spherical coordinates, and all known integrable backgrounds are covered by this separation. In particular, we identify the standard parameterization of AdS_p X S^q with elliptic coordinates on a flat base. We also find new geometries admitting separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the elliptic coordinates. Since separability of t…
We study the reflection of magnons from a D5-brane in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two possible orientations of the D5-brane with respect to the reference vacuum state, namely vacuum states aligned along "vertical" and "horizontal" directions. We show that the reflections are of the achiral type. We also show that the reflection matrices satisfy the boundary Yang-Baxter equations for both orientations. In the horizontal case the reflection matrix can be interpreted in terms of a bulk S-matrix, S(p, -p), and factorizability of boundary scattering therefore follows fr…
We study integrable open boundary conditions for d(2,1;α)^2 and psu(1,1|2)^2 spin-chains. Magnon excitations of these open spin-chains are mapped to massive excitations of type IIB open superstrings ending on D-branes in the AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 and AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 supergravity geometries with pure R-R flux. We derive reflection matrix solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation which intertwine representations of a variety of boundary coideal subalgebras of the bulk Hopf superalgebra. Many of these integrable boundaries are matched to D1- and D5-brane maximal giant gravitons.

We discuss connections between certain classes of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories and integrable lattice models from the point of view of topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). The relevant classes include 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ theories known as brane box and brane tilling models, 3d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and 2d $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ theories obtained from them by compactification, and 2d $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ theories closely related to these theories. We argue that their supersymmetric indices carry structures of TQFTs equipped with line operators, and as a consequence, are equal to the…
It is argued that the supersymmetric index of a certain system of branes in M-theory is equal to the partition function of an integrable three-dimensional lattice model. The local Boltzmann weights of the lattice model satisfy a generalization of Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation. In a special case the model is described by a solution of the tetrahedron equation discovered by Kapranov and Voevodsky and by Bazhanov and Sergeev.
We consider a model of 2D quantum field theory on a disk, whose bulk dynamics is that of a two-component free massless Bose field (X,Y), and interaction occurs at the boundary, where the boundary values (X_B, Y_B) are constrained to special curve - the ``paperclip brane''. The interaction breaks conformal invariance, but we argue that it preserves integrability. We propose exact expression for the disk partition function (and more general overlap amplitudes < P | B > of the boundary state with all primary states) in terms of solutions of certain ordinary linear differential equations.
This thesis is designed for a comprehensive review of noncommutative (BPS) solitons with applications to D-brane dynamics including our works. We focus on noncommutative instantons and monopoles and study various aspects of the exact solutions by using Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) and Nahm constructions. Finally we propose noncommutative extensions of integrable systems and soliton theories in lower dimensions in collaboration with Kouichi Toda, which would pioneer a new study area of integrable systems. Appendix is devoted to a brief and systematic review of formal aspects of ADHM/Nah…
We construct integrable deformations of the $λ$-type for asymmetrically gauged WZW models. This is achieved by a modification of the Sfetsos gauging procedure to account for a possible automorphism that is allowed in $G/G$ models. We verify classical integrability, derive the one-loop beta function for the deformation parameter and give the construction of integrable D-brane configurations in these models. As an application, we detail the case of the $λ$-deformation of the cigar geometry corresponding to the axial gauged $SL(2,R)/U(1)$ theory at large $k$. Here we also exhibit a range of both …
Equations of motion for the D0-brane on AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground are shown to be classically integrable by extending the argument previously elaborated for the massless superparticle model.
It has been recently shown that every SCFT living on D3 branes at a toric Calabi-Yau singularity surprisingly also describes a complete integrable system. In this paper we use the Master Space as a bridge between the integrable system and the underlying field theory and we reinterpret the Poisson manifold of the integrable system in term of the geometry of the field theory moduli space.
We explain Sklyanin's separation of variables in geometrical terms and construct it for Hitchin and Mukai integrable systems. We construct Hilbert schemes of points on $T^{*}Σ$ for $Σ= {\IC}, {\IC}^{*}$ or elliptic curve, and on ${\bf C}^{2}/Γ$ and show that their complex deformations are integrable systems of Calogero-Sutherland-Moser type. We present the hyperkähler quotient constructions for Hilbert schemes of points on cotangent bundles to the higher genus curves, utilizing the results of Hurtubise, Kronheimer and Nakajima. Finally we discuss the connections to physics of $D$-branes and st…
We reconsider dyonic p-brane solutions derivable from Liouville and Toda integrable systems and investigate their geometric structure. It is shown that the non-BPS non-black dyonic branes are not regular on the horizon.
The psu(2,2|4) integrable super spin chain underlying the AdS/CFT correspondence has integrable boundary states which describe set-ups where k D3-branes get dissolved in a probe D5-brane. Overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and these boundary states encode the one-point functions of conformal operators and are expressed in terms of the superdeterminant of the Gaudin matrix that in turn depends on the Dynkin diagram of the symmetry algebra. The different possible Dynkin diagrams of super Lie algebras are related via fermionic dualities and we determine how overlap formulae transform under these …
Witten couples the open topological B-model to a holomorphic vector bundle by adding to the boundary of the worldsheet a Wilson loop for an integrable connection on the bundle. Using the descent procedure for boundary vertex operators in this context, I generalize this construction to write a worldsheet coupling for a graded vector bundle with an integrable superconnection. I then compute the open string vertex operators between two such boundaries. A theorem of J. Block gives that this is equivalent to coupling the B-model to an arbitrary object in the derived category.
We calculate the exact eigenvalues of the adjoint scalar fields in the massive vacua of N=1* SUSY Yang-Mills with gauge group SU(N). This provides a field theory prediction for the distribution of D3 brane charge in the AdS dual. We verify the proposal of Polchinski and Strassler that the D3-brane's lie on a fuzzy sphere in the supergravity limit and determine the corrections to this distribution due to worldsheet and quantum effects. The calculation also provides several new results concerning the equilibrium configurations of the N-body Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian.
In this paper, an overview is presented of the recent construction of fully back-reacted half-BPS solutions in 11-dimensional supergravity which correspond to near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 and M5$'$ branes along a self-dual string. These solutions have space-time manifold ${\rm AdS}_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ$, and are invariant under the exceptional Lie superalgebra $D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ)$, where $γ$ is a real continuous parameter and $|γ|$ is governed by the ratio of the number of M5 and M5$'$ branes. The constructi…
We introduce a correspondence between dimer models (and hence superconformal quivers) and the quantum Teichmuller space of the Riemann surfaces associated to them by mirror symmetry. Via the untwisting map, every brane tiling gives rise to a tiling of the Riemann surface with faces surrounding punctures. We explain how to obtain an ideal triangulation by dualizing this tiling. In order to do so, tiling nodes of valence greater than 3 (equivalently superpotential terms of order greater than 3 in the corresponding quiver gauge theories) must be decomposed by the introduction of 2-valent nodes. F…
ABJM theory in the presence of a half-BPS domain wall is dual to the D2-D4 probe brane system with nonzero worldvolume flux. The ABJM domain wall was recently shown to be integrable to lowest order in perturbation theory and bond dimension. In the present paper we show that the string theory dual of this system is integrable, namely that the string boundary conditions on the probe D4-brane preserve the integrability of the Green-Schwarz sigma model. Our result suggests that the ABJM domain wall is integrable to all loop orders and for any value of the bond dimension.
We reformulate the Omega-deformation of four-dimensional gauge theory in a way that is valid away from fixed points of the associated group action. We use this reformulation together with the theory of coisotropic A-branes to explain recent results linking the Omega-deformation to integrable Hamiltonian systems in one direction and Liouville theory of two-dimensional conformal field theory in another direction.
We demonstrate that the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in N = 2 SYM with a single chiral hypermultiplet of fundamental matter, which is dual to AdS_5 X S^5 with a D7-brane filling AdS_5 and wrapped around an $^3 in the S^5, is an integrable open spin chain Hamiltonian. We also use the doubling trick to relate these open spin chains to closed spin chains in pure N = 4 SYM. By using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find a relation between the corresponding open and closed strings that differs from a simple doubling trick by terms that vanish in the semiclassical limit. We also demonstrate tha…
A new class of integrable theories of 0+1 and 1+1 dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to any number of scalar fields is introduced. These models are reducible to systems of independent Liouville equations whose solutions must satisfy the energy and momentum constraints. The constraints are solved thus giving the explicit analytic solution of the theory in terms of arbitrary chiral fields. In particular, these integrable theories describe spherically symmetric black holes and branes of higher dimensional supergravity theories as well as superstring motivated cosmological models.
Exact solvability of brane equations is studied, and a new $U(1)\times U(1)\times... \times U(1)$ invariant anzats for the solution of $p$-brane equations in $D=(2p+1)$-dimensional Minkowski space is proposed. The reduction of the $p$-brane Hamiltonian to the Hamiltonian of $p$-dimensional relativistic anharmonic oscillator with the monomial potential of the degree equal to $2p$ is revealed. For the case of degenerate p-torus with equal radii it is shown that the $p$-brane equations are integrable and their solutions are expressed in terms of elliptic ($p=2$) or hyperelliptic ($p>2$) functions…
We derive a two-dimensional effective dilaton - gravity - matter action that describes the dynamics of an uncharged black p-brane in N dimensions. We show that this effective theory is completely integrable in the static sector and establish its general static solution. The solution includes, as a particular case, the boost symmetric p-brane solution investigated in hep-th/9510202 .
In this paper, we show that various noncommutative integrable equations can be derived from noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations in the split signature, which include noncommutative versions of Korteweg-de Vries, Non-Linear Schroedinger, N-wave, Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. U(1) part of gauge groups for the original Yang-Mills equations play crucial roles in noncommutative extension of Mason-Sparling's celebrated discussion. The present results would be strong evidences for noncommutative Ward's conjecture and imply that these noncommutative integrable e…
We initiate the study of how to extend the correspondence between dimer models and (0+1)-dimensional cluster integrable systems to (1+1) and (2+1)-dimensional continuous integrable field theories, addressing various points that are necessary for achieving this goal. We first study how to glue and split two integrable systems, from the perspectives of the spectral curve, the resolution of the associated toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Higgsing in quiver theories on D3-brane probes. We identify a continuous parameter controlling the decoupling between the components and present two complementary me…
The spectrum of open strings with integrable Y=0 brane boundary conditions is analyzed in planar AdS/CFT. We give evidence that it can be described by the same Y-system that governs the spectrum of closed strings in AdS_5xS^5, except with different asymptotic and analytical properties. We determine the asymptotic solution of the Y-system that is consistent both with boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary Luscher corrections.
We consider integrable field theories with achiral boundary conditions and uncover the underlying achiral twisted Yangian algebra. This construction arises from old work on the bosonic principal chiral model on a half-line, but finds a modern realization as the hidden symmetry in the planar limit of the scattering of worldsheet excitations of the AdS/CFT light-cone superstring off a D5-brane.
Coincident D2-branes in open N=2 fermionic string theory with a B-field background yield an integrable modified U(n) sigma model on noncommutative R^{2,1}. This model provides a showcase for an established method (the `dressing approach') to generate solutions for integrable field equations, even in the noncommutative case. We demonstrate the technique by constructing moving U(1) and U(2) solitons and by computing their energies. It is outlined how to derive multi-soliton configurations with arbitrary relative motion; they correspond to D0-branes moving inside the D2-branes.
We investigate BPS equations which determine the configuration of an M2-M5 bound state preserving half of the supersymmetries in the ABJM theory. We argue that the BPS equations are classically integrable, showing that they admit a Lax representation. The integrable structure of the BPS equations is closely related to that of the Nahm equations. Using this relation we formulate an efficient way of constructing solutions of the BPS equations from those of the Nahm equations. As an illustration of our method, we construct explicitly the most general solutions describing two M2-branes suspended b…
We determine in a closed form all scalar one-point functions of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of flux which amounts to calculating the overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the integrable SO(6) spin chain and a certain matrix product state of bond dimension k. In particular, we show that the matrix product state is annihilated by all the parity odd charges of the spin chain which has recently been suggested as the criterion for such a state to correspond to an integrable initial state. Finally, we discuss the properties of the analogous matrix product state f…
In this paper, we use only the equation of motion for an interacting system of gravity, dilaton and antisymmetric tensor to study the soliton solutions by making use of a Poincaré invariant ansatz. We show that the system of equations are completly integrable and the solution is unique with appropriate boundary conditions. Some new class of solutions are also given explicitly.
We construct branes in the plane wave background under the inclusion of fermionic boundary fields. The resulting deformed boundary conditions in the bosonic and fermionic sectors give rise to new integrable and supersymmetric branes of type (n,n). The extremal case of the spacetime filling (4,4)-brane is shown to be maximally spacetime supersymmetric.
The quantum mechanical transition between a free particle Lagrangian and the Klein Gordon field description of a free particle (particle wave duality) is conjectured to extend to an analogous construction of relativistically invariant wave equations associated with strings and branes, which we propose to call brane-wave duality. Electromagnetic interactions in the two systems are discussed. It is emphasised that all integrable free field theories, including those of Dirac-Born-Infeld type, are associated with Lagrangians equivalent to divergences on the space of solutions of the equations of m…
Non-compact Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) are central to several aspects of string theory and condensed matter physics. They are characterised, in particular, by the appearance of a continuum of conformal dimensions. Surprisingly, such CFTs have been identified as the continuum limits of lattice models with a finite number of degrees of freedom per site. However, results have so far been restricted to the case of periodic boundary conditions, precluding the exploration via lattice models of aspects of non-compact boundary CFTs and the corresponding D-brane constructions. The present paper fo…
In this paper we show that the supergravity equations describing both cosmic billiards and a large class of black-holes are, generically, both Liouville integrable as a consequence of the same universal mechanism. This latter is provided by the Liouville integrable Poissonian structure existing on the dual Borel algebra B_N of the simple Lie algebra A_{N-1}. As a by product we derive the explicit integration algorithm associated with all symmetric spaces U/H^{*} relevant to the description of time-like and space-like p-branes. The most important consequence of our approach is the explicit cons…
We study integrable non-diagonal open boundary conditions for spin chains arising from holographic gauge theories. Their dual description is in terms of open strings stretching between giant gravitons intersecting at arbitrary angles inside spheres or projective spaces. By studying properties of their ground and low-lying states we reproduce the expected spectrum near the intersections. Unlike the case of intersecting D-branes in flat space, intersecting giant gravitons related by $SU(N)$ rotations do not always preserve an additional supersymmetry. We quantify this lack of enhancement by whet…
We improve on the understanding of the backreaction of anti-D6-branes in a flux background that is mutually BPS with D6-branes. This setup is analogous to the study of the backreaction of anti-D3-branes inserted in the KS throat, but does not require us to smear the anti-branes or do a perturbative analysis around the BPS background. We solve the full equations of motion near the anti-D6-branes and show that only two boundary conditions are consistent with the equations of motion. Upon invoking a topological argument we eliminate the boundary condition with regular H flux since it cannot lead …
We investigate the thermodynamical behavior and the scaling symmetries of the scalar dressed black brane (BB) solutions of a recently proposed, exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model [1], which also arises as compactification of (p-1)-branes with a smeared charge. The extremal, zero temperature, solution is a scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the near-horizon region and a scale covariant metric (generating hyperscaling violation on the boundary field theory) asymptotically. We show explicitly that for the boundary field theory this implies the e…
We study rigidly rotating and pulsating strings in the background of a 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of fivebranes in type IIB string theory by using the Neumann-Rosochatius (NR) model. Starting with the Polyakov action of the probe fundamental string we show that a generalised ansatz reduce the system into the one dimensional NR model in the presence of flux. The integrable construction of the model is exploited to analyze the rotating and oscillating string solution. We render the large $J$ BMN-type expansion for the energy of rotating string states while the same for…
A D3-D5 intersection gives rise to a defect CFT, wherein the rank of the gauge group jumps by k units across a domain wall. The one-point functions of local operators in this set-up map to overlaps between on-shell Bethe states in the underlying spin chain and a boundary state representing the D5 brane. Focussing on the k=1 case, we extend the construction to gluonic and fermionic sectors, which was prohibitively difficult to achieve for k>1. As a byproduct, we test an all-loop proposal for the one-point functions in the su(2) sector at the half-wrapping order of perturbation theory.
