The psu(2,2|4) integrable super spin chain underlying the AdS/CFT correspondence has integrable boundary states which describe set-ups where k D3-branes get dissolved in a probe D5-brane. Overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and these boundary states encode the one-point functions of conformal operators and are expressed in terms of the superdeterminant of the Gaudin matrix that in turn depends on the Dynkin diagram of the symmetry algebra. The different possible Dynkin diagrams of super Lie algebras are related via fermionic dualities and we determine how overlap formulae transform under these dualities. As an application we show how to consistently move between overlap formulae obtained for k=1 from different Dynkin diagrams.
We construct novel fermion-fermion dualities in $2+1$-dimensions using 3d bosonization dualities. This is achieved by relating two-node quiver theories using both the flavor-bounded and flavor-violated 3d bosonization dualities. Such quivers can be viewed as a generalization of the fermionic particle-vortex duality. A special case of these quivers exhibits a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under interchange of the two nodes. Using orbifold techniques, we show that such dualities provide a novel way of deriving known 3d bosonization dualities with adjoint matter, thus unifying the non-Abelian bosonizat…
We explore fermionic T-duality and self-duality in the geometry AdS3 x S3 x T4 in type IIB supergravity. We explicitly construct the Killing spinors and the fermionic T-duality isometries and show that the geometry is self-dual under a combination of two bosonic AdS3 T-dualities, four fermionic T-dualities and either two additional T-dualities along T4 or two T-dualities along S3. In addition, we show that the presence of a B-field acts as an obstacle to self-duality, a property attributable to S- duality and fermionic T-duality not commuting. Finally, we argue that fermionic T-duality may be …
This thesis deals with the two duality symmetries of N=2 D=10 supergravity theories that are descendant from the full superstring theory: fermionic T-duality and U-duality. The fermionic T-duality transformation is applied to the D-brane and pp-wave solutions of type IIB supergravity. New supersymmetric solutions of complexified supergravity are generated. We show that the pp-wave yields a purely imaginary background after two dualities, undergoes a geometric transformation after four dualities, and is self-dual after eight dualities. Next we apply six bosonic and six fermionic T-dualities to …
We give a supergravity treatment of the set of bosonic and fermionic T-dualities in the AdS_4 x CP^3 background. We consider T-dualities along three flat AdS_4 directions, three complexified isometries of CP^3, and six fermionic T-dualities. Concentrating on the transformation of the dilaton, we give description of the singularity that arises in the transformation.
We study the dualities for sigma models with fermions and bosons. We found that the generalization of the SO(m,m) duality for D=2 sigma models and the Sp(2n) duality for D=4 sigma models is the orthosymplectic duality OSp(m,m|2 n). We study the implications of this and we derive the most general D=2 sigma model, coupled to fermionic and bosonic one-forms, with such dualities. To achieve this we generalize Gaillard-Zumino analysis to orthosymplectic dualities, which requires to define embedding of the superisometry group of the target space into the duality group. We finally discuss the recentl…
We use the superspace formulation of supergravity in eleven and ten dimensions to compute fermion couplings on the M2-brane and on D$p$-branes. In this formulation fermionic couplings arise naturally from the $θ$-expansion of the superfields from which the brane actions are constructed. The techniques we use and develop can in principle be applied to determine the fermionic couplings to general background fields up to arbitrary order. Starting with the superspace formulation of 11-dimensional supergravity, we use a geometric technique known as the `normal coordinate' method to obtain the $θ$-e…
We derive a general relation between the bosonic and fermionic entanglement in the ground states of supersymmetric quadratic Hamiltonians. For this, we construct canonical identifications between bosonic and fermionic subsystems. Our derivation relies on a unified framework to describe both, bosonic and fermionic Gaussian states in terms of so-called linear complex structures $J$. The resulting dualities apply to the full entanglement spectrum between the bosonic and the fermionic systems, such that the von Neumann entropy and arbitrary Renyi entropies can be related. We illustrate our finding…
We consider Quantum Electrodynamics with an even number $N_f$ of bosonic or fermionic flavors, allowing for interactions respecting at least $U(N_f/2)^2$ global symmetry. Both in the bosonic and in the fermionic case, we find four interacting fixed points: two with $U(N_f/2)^2$ symmetry, two with $U(N_f)$ symmetry. Large $N_f$ arguments suggest that, lowering $N_f$, all these fixed points merge pairwise and become complex CFT's. In the bosonic QED's the merging happens around $N_f\sim 9{-}11$ and does not break the global symmetry. In the fermionic QED's the merging happens around $N_f\sim3{-}…
The dualities that map hard-to-solve, interacting theories to free, non-interacting ones often trigger a deeper understanding of the systems to which they apply. However, simplifying assumptions such as Lorentz invariance, low dimensionality, or the absence of axial gauge fields, limit their application to a broad class of systems, including topological semimetals. Here we derive several axial field theory dualities in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions by developing an axial slave-rotor approach capable of accounting for the axial anomaly. Our 2+1-dimensional duality suggests the existence of a dual, cri…
We construct long-range fermionic models with the Gross-Neveu and Gross-Neveu-Yukawa interaction, and argue that their critical regimes are equivalent. To this end, we calculate various CFT data in $ε$- and $1/N$- expansion, and demonstrate their agreement in the overlapping regimes of validity.
The probability amplitude for tunneling between the Dirac vacua corresponding to different signs of a parity breaking fermionic mass $M$ in $2+1$ dimensions is studied, making contact with the continuum overlap formulation for chiral determinants. It is shown that the transition probability in the limit when $M \to \infty$ corresponds, via the overlap formalism, to the squared modulus of a chiral determinant in two Euclidean dimensions. The transition probabilities corresponding to two particular examples: fermions on a torus with twisted boundary conditions, and fermions on a disk in the pres…
Inspired by recent developments generalizing Jordan-Wigner dualities to higher dimensions, we develop a framework of such dualities using an algebraic formalism for translation-invariant Hamiltonians proposed by Haah. We prove that given a translation-invariant fermionic system with general $q$-body interactions, where $q$ is even, a local mapping preserving global fermion parity to a dual Pauli spin model exists and is unique up to a choice of basis. Furthermore, the dual spin model is constructive, and we present various examples of these dualities. As an application, we bosonize fermionic s…
The encoding of all possible sets of Bethe equations for a spin chain with SU(N|M) symmetry into a QQ-system calls for an expression of spin chain overlaps entirely in terms of Q-functions. We take a significant step towards deriving such a universal formula in the case of overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and integrable boundary states, of relevance for AdS/dCFT, by determining the transformation properties of the overlaps under fermionic as well as bosonic dualities which allows us to move between any two descriptions of the spin chain encoded in the QQ-system. An important part of our anal…
In this note, we have compared two different perturbation techniques that are used to generate dynamical black-brane solutions to Einstein equation in presence of negative cosmological constant. One is the `derivative expansion', where the gravity solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with the solutions of relativistic Navier-Stokes equation. The second is the expansion in terms of inverse power of space-time dimensions and here the gravity solutions are dual to a co-dimension one dynamical membrane, embedded in AdS space and coupled to a velocity field. We have shown that in large number…
We find a representation for the determinant of a Dirac operator in an even number $D= 2 n$ of Euclidean dimensions as an overlap between two different vacua, each one corresponding to a bosonic theory with a quadratic action in $2 n + 1$ dimensions, with identical kinetic terms, but differing in their mass terms. This resembles the overlap representation of a fermionic determinant (although bosonic fields are used here). This representation may find applications to lattice field theory, as an alternative to other bosonized representations for Dirac determinants already proposed.
There is an intimate relation between entanglement entropy and Riemann surfaces. This fact is explicitly noticed for the case of quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians with finite range couplings. After recollecting this fact, we make a comprehensive analysis of the action of the Möbius transformations on the Riemann surface. We are then able to uncover the origin of some symmetries and dualities of the entanglement entropy already noticed recently in the literature. These results give further support for the use of entanglement entropy to analyse phase transition.
We discuss, in the context of M(atrix) theory, the creation of a membrane suspendend between two longitudinal five-branes when they cross each other. It is shown that the membrane creation is closely related to the degrees of freedom in the off-diagonal blocks which are related via dualities to the chiral fermionic zero mode on a 0-8 string. In the dual system of a D0-brane and a D8-brane in type \IIA theory the half-integral charges associated with the ``half''-strings are found to be connected to the well-known fermion-number fractionalization in the presence of a fermionic zero mode. At suf…
Topological charge of families of lattice gauge fields is defined fermionically via families index theory for the overlap Dirac operator. Certain obstructions to gauge invariance of the overlap chiral fermion determinant, as well as the lattice analogues of certain obstructions to gauge fixings without the Gribov problem, have natural descriptions in this context.
In our previous work, the two-loop integrability of ABJM determinant like operator has been well established. In this paper, we push the integrability to all loop orders. The asymptotic Bethe ansatz equations for ABJM determinant like operator (open string attached on giant graviton) are obtained. In the derivation, the symmetries preserved by the bulk and the boundary played a crucial role. Taking the weak coupling limit and applying appropriate fermionic dualities, we obtained a different set of scalar sector Bethe equations with our previous results. When the "gauge" transformation on Bethe…
The fermionic determinant of a lattice Dirac operator that obeys the Ginsparg-Wilson relation factorizes into two factors that are complex conjugate of each other. Each factor is naturally associated with a single chiral fermion and can be realized as a overlap of two many body vacua.
Quantum fluctuations of the Néel state of the square lattice antiferromagnet are usually described by a $\mathbb{CP}^1$ theory of bosonic spinons coupled to a U(1) gauge field, and with a global SU(2) spin rotation symmetry. Such a theory also has a confining phase with valence bond solid (VBS) order, and upon including spin-singlet charge 2 Higgs fields, deconfined phases with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order possibly intertwined with discrete broken global symmetries. We present dual theories of the same phases starting from a mean-field theory of fermionic spinons moving in $π$-flux in each…
Dualities provide deep insight into physics by relating two seemingly distinct theories. Here we propose and elaborate on a novel duality between bosonic and fermionic theories in four spacetime dimensions. Starting with a Euclidean lattice action consisting of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom and integrating out one of them alternatively, we derive a UV duality between a Wilson fermion with self-interactions and an XY model coupled to a compact U(1) gauge field. We find a continuous phase transition between topological and trivial insulators on the fermion side corresponding to Higgs …
Using the overlap formulation, we calculate the fermionic determinant on the lattice for chiral fermions with twisted boundary conditions in two dimensions. When the lattice spacing tends to zero we recover the results of the usual string-theory continuum calculations.
We study crosscap states in integrable field theories and spin chains in 1+1 dimensions. We derive an exact formula for overlaps between the crosscap state and any excited state in integrable field theories with diagonal scattering. We then compute the crosscap entropy, i.e. the overlap for the ground state, in some examples. In the examples we analyzed, the result turns out to decrease monotonically along the renormalization group flow except in cases where the discrete symmetry is spontaneously broken in the infrared. We next introduce crosscap states in integrable spin chains, and obtain de…
