We improve on the understanding of the backreaction of anti-D6-branes in a flux background that is mutually BPS with D6-branes. This setup is analogous to the study of the backreaction of anti-D3-branes inserted in the KS throat, but does not require us to smear the anti-branes or do a perturbative analysis around the BPS background. We solve the full equations of motion near the anti-D6-branes and show that only two boundary conditions are consistent with the equations of motion. Upon invoking a topological argument we eliminate the boundary condition with regular H flux since it cannot lead to a solution that approaches the right kind of flux away from the anti-D6-brane. This leaves us with a boundary condition which has singular, but integrable, H flux energy density.
We argue that gravitational interactions between open strings ending on D3-branes are largely shaped by the D3-branes' backreaction. To this end we consider classical open strings coupled to general relativity in Poincare AdS5 backgrounds. We compute the linear gravitational backreaction of a static string extending up to the Poincare horizon, and deduce the potential energy between two such strings. If spacetime is non-compact, we find that the gravitational potential energy between parallel open strings is independent of the strings' inertial masses and goes like 1/r at large distance r. If …
In this paper we investigate the localisation of SUSY-breaking branes which, in the smeared approximation, support specific non-BPS vacua. We show, for a wide class of boundary conditions, that there is no flux vacuum when the branes are described by a genuine delta-function. Even more, we find that the smeared solution is the unique solution with a regular brane profile. Our setup consists of a non-BPS AdS_7 solution in massive IIA supergravity with smeared anti-D6-branes and fluxes T-dual to ISD fluxes in IIB supergravity.

We find the superpotential governing the supersymmetric warped M-theory solution with a transverse Stenzel space found by Cvetic, Gibbons, Lu and Pope in hep-th/0012011, and use this superpotential to extract and solve the twelve coupled equations underlying the first-order backreacted solution of a stack of anti-M2 branes in this space. These anti-M2 branes were analyzed recently in a probe approximation by Klebanov and Pufu, who conjectured that they should be dual to a metastable vacuum of a supersymmetric 2+1 dimensional theory. We find that the would-be supergravity dual to such a metasta…
We present the full numerical solution for the 15-dimensional space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background which preserve the SU(2) X SU(2) X Z_2 symmetries. We identify within this space the solution corresponding to anti-D3 branes, (modulo the presence of a certain subleading singularity in the infrared). All the 15 integration constants of this solution are fixed in terms of the number of anti-D3 branes, and the solution differs in the UV from the supersymmetric solution into which it is supposed to decay by a mode corresponding to a rescaling of the field theory co…
We study brane inflation in flux compactifications at the nonlinear level, solving the D3-brane DBI-equations of motion including backreaction from the D3-D7 brane potential and from perturbations of the warp factor. We first numerically compute the exact functional form of the Kaehler modulus valid on the entire supergravity background and obtain a two-field potential along radial and harmonic directions. We find that a valid perturbative expansion on the entire supergravity background with the Kaehler modulus integrated out adiabatically in DBI inflation requires hierarchies of scales that d…
We calculate the interaction potential between D5 and anti-D5 branes wrapping distant but homologous 2-cycles. The interaction potential is logarithmic in the separation radius and does not decouple at infinity. We show that logarithmic backreaction is generic for 5-branes wrapping distant but homologous 2-cycles, and we argue that this destabilises models of axion monodromy inflation involving NS5 brane-antibrane pairs in separate warped throats towards an uncontrolled region.
We consider a five dimensional AdS warped spacetime in presence of a massive scalar field in the bulk. The scalar field potential fulfills the requirement of modulus stabilization even when the effect of backreaction of the stabilizing field is taken into account. In such a scenario, we explore the role of backreaction on the localization of bulk fermions which in turn determines the effective radion-fermion coupling on the brane. Our result reveals that both the chiral modes of the zeroth Kaluza-Klein (KK) fermions get localized near TeV brane as the backreaction of the scalar field increases…
We compute the imaginary self-dual (ISD) and imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes for the Klebanov-Strassler background perturbed by a stack of p anti-D3 branes. We show that, at linear order in p, they both have a singularity in the near-brane region. While one can argue that the IASD flux may disappear at full non-linear level, no such argument exists for the ISD mode. An analogy with anti-D6 backreaction suggests that such singularity may survive once full backreaction is taken into account and may be a universal feature of anti-brane solutions.
We review the tachyon model derived from the dynamics of a 3-brane moving in the AdS5 bulk. The bulk geometry is based on the Randall-Sundrum II model extended to include the radion. The effective tachyon Lagrangian is modified due to the back-reaction of the brane on the bulk geometry.
We study D-brane instantons in systems of D3-branes at toric CY 3-fold singularities. The instanton effect can be described as a backreaction modifying the geometry of the mirror configuration, in which the breaking of $U(1)$ symmetries by the instanton translates into the recombination of gauge D-branes, which also directly generates the instanton-induced charged field theory operator. In this paper we describe the D-brane instanton backreaction in terms of a combinatorial operation in the bipartite dimer diagram of the original theory. Interestingly, the resulting theory is a general Biparti…
Localised sources such as D-branes or orientifold planes play an important role in many string compactifications that are relevant for phenomenology. The presence of these objects typically induces complicated dynamics in the compact dimensions such that a full solution to the 10d equations of motion is often out of reach. In order to still be able to make statements about the 4d effective theory arising in the low-energy limit, the equations of motion are usually only solved in an integrated sense, while the backreaction of the localised sources on the internal fields is neglected. This simpl…
A model consisting of (d+1)-dimensional gravity coupled to spacetime filling charged branes is used to study the effects of backreaction. The charged black holes arising from this simple model reflect the non-linearity of the gauge field and are thermodynamically stable. By analysing fluctuations of the system we corroborate that at low values of the temperature (or large chemical potential) backreaction effects from the branes are dominant. We also provide a generalisation of the Iqbal and Liu strategy to calculate the DC conductivity, in which a mass term for the gauge field fluctuation is i…
The backreactions of anti-branes on a variety of supergravity backgrounds have been shown in a recent series of papers to be riled by some unexplained flux singularities. All of the situations studied so far involve backgrounds with (close to) AdS-asymptotics. It is the purpose of this work to study the backreaction of anti-M2 branes on a background exhibiting a different UV behavior: The so-called $\mathbb{A}_8$ regular solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity that we consider has "Taub-NUT type" asymptotics. As it turns out, some subleading infrared singularities are inevitable; they cann…
Antibranes provide some of the most generic ways to uplift Anti-de Sitter flux compactifications to de Sitter, and there is a growing body of evidence that antibranes placed in long warped throats such as the Klebanov-Strassler warped deformed conifold solution have a brane-brane-repelling tachyon. This tachyon was first found in the regime of parameters in which the backreaction of the antibranes is large, and its existence was inferred from a highly nontrivial cancellation of certain terms in the inter-brane potential. We use a brane effective action approach, similar to that proposed by Mic…
We give a prescription for calculating the entanglement entropy in holographic probe brane systems by systematically taking the leading order backreaction of the probe brane into account. We find a simple compact double integral formula, which is insensitive to many details of the backreaction, most notably the internal space or the non-metric fields sourced by the probe. We validate our method by comparing to exact results in solvable toy models. We also determine the entanglement entropies for a sphere and a strip in the top-down D3/D7 and D3/D5 system. For the sphere the entanglement entrop…
We construct analytically the gravity duals of three-dimensional, super Yang-Mills-type theories with $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors. The backreaction of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_f$ D6-branes on the background of $N$ D2-branes. The D6-branes are smeared over the compact part of the geometry, which must be a six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold in order to preserve supersymmetry. For massless quarks, the solutions flow in the IR to an $AdS_4$ fixed point dual to a Chern-Si…
We present non-extremal generalizations of N_f=2N_c supergravity duals obtained by adding flavor branes to the Chamseddine-Volkov-Maldacena-Nunez background and taking their backreaction into account. For a particular range of parameters we obtain a one parameter family of analytic black hole solutions with regular horizons. These solutions have a temperature that is always above the Hagedorn temperature of little string theory. We find that including flavor branes and their backreaction increases the minimum temperature of these systems from T = 1/(4π), for the background without flavor, to T…
We construct analytically a perturbative supergravity solution that captures the backreaction of a metastable state of anti-branes in the background of a particular modification of the Klebanov-Strassler throat in a long-wavelength approximation. Our solution, which has no unphysical singularities, describes how non-supersymmetric spherical NS5-branes with dissolved anti-D3 brane charge backreact in a fluxed throat geometry. It supports previous claims that there is a well-behaved supergravity description of the metastable state of wrapped NS5-branes proposed years ago by Kachru, Pearson, and …
The unwinding inflation mechanism is studied in a type IIB flux compactification where all moduli are stabilized using flux, non-perturbative effects, and the leading alpha' corrections of the large volume scenario. We consider the backreaction on the geometry due to the presence of anti-D3 branes as well as the backreaction of inflation on the Kaehler moduli, and compute the resulting corrections to the slow-roll potential. By taking large flux numbers, we are able to find inflationary epochs where backreaction effects are under control, the inflaton traverses a super-Planckian field range, a…
In this work we study the fluctuation and dissipation of a string attached to a brane in a deformed and backreated AdS-Schwarzschild spacetime. This space is a solution of Einstein-dilaton equations and contains a conformal exponential factor $\exp(k/r^2)$ in the metric. We consider the backreaction contributions coming only from the exponential warp factor on the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole, where the string and brane are in the probe approximation. Within this Lorentz invariant holographic model we have computed the admittance, the diffusion coefficient, the two-point functions and the regu…
There are situations in string theory when a finite number of string quanta induce a significant backreaction upon the background and render the perturbation theory infrared-divergent. The simplest example is D0-brane recoil under an impact by closed strings. A more physically interesting case is backreaction on the evolution of a totally compact universe due to closed string gas. Such situations necessitate qualitative amendments to the traditional formulation of string theory in a fixed classical background. In this contribution to the proceedings of the XVII European Workshop on String Theo…
We provide an explicit example of a higher-dimensional model describing a non-supersymmetric spectrum of 4D particles of mass M, whose 4D geometry -- {\em including loop effects} -- has a curvature that is of order R ~ m_KK^4/M_p^2, where m_KK is the extra-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scale and M_p is the 4D Planck constant. m_KK is stabilized and can in particular satisfy m_KK << M. The system consists of a (5+1)-dimensional model with a flux-stabilized supersymmetric bulk coupled to non-supersymmetric matter localized on a (3+1)-dimensional positive-tension brane. We use recent techniques for ca…
We study the dynamics of anti-M2 branes in a warped Stenzel solution with M2 charges dissolved in fluxes by taking into account their full backreaction on the geometry. The resulting supergravity solution has a singular magnetic four-form flux in the near-brane region. We examine the possible resolution of this singularity via the polarization of anti-M2 branes into M5 branes, and compute the corresponding polarization potential for branes smeared on the finite-size four-sphere at the tip of the Stenzel space. We find that the potential has no minimum. We then use the potential for smeared bra…
In the recent literature it has been questioned whether the local backreaction of antibranes in flux throats can induce a perturbative brane-flux decay. Most evidence for this can be gathered for D6 branes and Dp branes smeared over 6-p compact directions, in line with the absence of finite temperature solutions for these cases. The solutions in the literature have flat worldvolume geometries and non-compact transversal spaces. In this paper we consider what happens when the worldvolume is AdS and the transversal space is compact. We show that in these circumstances brane polarisation smoothen…
We propose a manifestly SO(8) invariant BF type Lagrangian for describing the dynamics of M2-brane-anti-M2-brane system in flat spacetime. When one of the scalars which satisfies a free-scalar equation takes a large expectation value, the M2-brane-anti-M2-brane action reduces to the tachyon DBI action of D2-brane-anti-D2-brane system in flat spacetime.
We propose an action for the D0-brane anti-D0-brane system that has its exact solution corresponding to the marginal tachyon profile defined for arbitrary constant separation of these D-branes. We also find its covariant formulation and generalization to higher dimensional Dp-branes.
In this short note we present analysis of the tachyon kink solution in the canonical formalism. We also find Hamiltonian for simplified system of Dp-brane and anti-Dp-brane.
We construct holographic duals to N=1 SQCD with a quartic superpotential and unquenched massive flavors. Our backgrounds are generated by D5-branes wrapping two-dimensional submanifolds of an internal space. The flavor degrees of freedom are introduced by means of D5-branes extended along two-dimensional calibrated surfaces, and act as sources of the different supergravity fields. The backgrounds we get include the backreaction of the flavor branes and generalize the geometries obtained so far to the case in which the fundamental matter is massive. The supergravity solutions we find are regula…
We study the holographic dual of flavors in a Chern-Simons matter theory at non-zero temperature, realized as D6-branes in the type IIA black hole dual in the ABJM background geometry. We consider both massive and massless flavors. The former are treated in the quenched approximation, whereas the massless ones are considered as dynamical objects and their backreaction on the geometry is included in the black hole background. We compute the holographically renormalized action of the probe by imposing several physical conditions. In the limit of massless flavors the free energy and entropy of th…
We study the full backreaction of anti-D3 branes smeared over the tip of the deformed conifold. Requiring the 5-form flux and warp factor at the tip to be that of anti-D3 branes, we find a simple power counting argument showing that if the three-form fluxes have no IR singularity, they will be necessarily imaginary-anti-self-dual. Hence the only solution with anti-D3 branes at the tip of the conifold that is regular in the IR and the UV is the anti-Klebanov-Strassler solution, and there is no regular solution whose D3-charge is negative in the IR and positive in the UV.
Recently, some authors have considered the quantum spectrum of black holes . This consideration is extended to tachyonic black holes in a brane-anti-brane system. In this study, black holes are constructed from two branes which are connected by a tachyonic tube. As the branes come closer to each other, they evolve and make a transition to thermal black branes. It will be shown that the spectrum of these black holes depends on the tachonic potential and the separation distance between the branes. By decreasing the separation distance, more energy emerges and the spectrum of the black hole incre…
Can classical wormholes stabilize the brane-anti-brane system?
