We consider the effect of quenched spatial disorder on systems of interacting, pinned non-Abelian anyons as might arise in disordered Hall samples at filling fractions ν=5/2 or ν=12/5. In one spatial dimension, such disordered anyon models have previously been shown to exhibit a hierarchy of infinite randomness phases. Here, we address systems in two spatial dimensions and report on the behavior of Ising and Fibonacci anyons under the numerical strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). In order to manage the topology-dependent interactions generated during the flow, we introduce a planar approximation to the SDRG treatment. We characterize this planar approximation by studying the flow of disordered hard-core bosons and the transverse field Ising model, where it successfully reproduces the known infinite randomness critical point with exponent ψ~ 0.43. Our main conclusion for disordered anyon models in two spatial dimensions is that systems of Ising anyons as well as systems of Fibonacci anyons do not realize infinite randomness phases, but flow back to weaker disorder under the numerical SDRG treatment.
We demonstrate that a thermal metal of Majorana fermions forms in a two-dimensional system of interacting non-Abelian (Ising) anyons in the presence of moderate disorder. This bulk metallic phase arises in the $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state when disorder pins the anyonic quasiparticles. More generally, it naturally occurs for various proposed systems supporting Majorana fermion zero modes when disorder induces the random pinning of a finite density of vortices. This includes all two-dimensional topological superconductors in so-called symmetry class D. A distinct experimental signature of the ther…
Topological phases supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations have been proposed as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we study disordered non-abelian anyonic chains based on the quantum groups $SU(2)_k$, a hierarchy that includes the $ν=5/2$ FQH state and the proposed $ν=12/5$ Fibonacci state, among others. We find that for odd $k$ these anyonic chains realize infinite randomness critical {\it phases} in the same universality class as the $S_k$ permutation symmetric multi-critical points of Damle and Huse (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 277203 (2002)). Indeed, we show that t…
Topological insulators supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations are at the center of attention as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we analyze the ground-state properties of disordered non-abelian anyonic chains. The resemblance of fusion rules of non-abelian anyons and real space decimation strongly suggests that disordered chains of such anyons generically exhibit infinite-randomness phases. Concentrating on the disordered golden chain model with nearest-neighbor coupling, we show that Fibonacci anyons with the fusion rule $τ\otimesτ={\bf 1}\oplus τ$ exhibit tw…
We enquire into the quasi-many-body localization in topologically ordered states of matter, revolving around the case of Kitaev toric code on ladder geometry, where different types of anyonic defects carry different masses induced by environmental errors. Our study verifies that random arrangement of anyons generates a complex energy landscape solely through braiding statistics, which suffices to suppress the diffusion of defects in such multi-component anyonic liquid. This non-ergodic dynamic suggests a promising scenario for investigation of quasi-many-body localization. Computing standard d…
We investigate interacting disordered zigzag nanoribbons at low doping, using the Hubbard model to treat electron interactions within the density matrix renormalization group and Hartree-Fock method. Extra electrons that are inserted into an interacting disordered zigzag nanoribbon divide into anyons. Furthermore, the fractional charges form a new disordered anyon phase with a highly distorted edge spin density wave, containing numerous localized magnetic moments residing on the zigzag edges, thereby displaying spin-charge separation and a strong non-local correlation between the opposite zigz…
We study the disordered XYZ spin chain using the recently developed Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group (SBRG) numerical method. With strong disorder, the phase diagram consists of three many body localized (MBL) spin glass phases. We argue that, with sufficiently strong disorder, these spin glass phases are separated by marginally many-body localized (MBL) critical lines. We examine the critical lines of this model by measuring the entanglement entropy and Edwards-Anderson spin glass order parameter, and find that the critical lines are characterized by an effective central charge c'=l…
We investigate the effects of quenched randomness on topological quantum phase transitions in strongly interacting two-dimensional systems. We focus first on transitions driven by the condensation of a subset of fractionalized quasiparticles (`anyons') identified with `electric charge' excitations of a phase with intrinsic topological order. All other anyons have nontrivial mutual statistics with the condensed subset and hence become confined at the anyon condensation transition. Using a combination of microscopically exact duality transformations and asymptotically exact real-space renormaliz…
We study a microscopic model of interacting fermions in a ladder setup, where the total number of particles is conserved. At a special point, the ground state is known and gives rise to a topological state of matter with edge modes obeying the statistics of Ising anyons. Using a combination of bosonization as well as full scale numerical density-matrix renormalization group analysis, we map out the full phase diagram. We nd that the topological phase survives in an extended parameter regime. Remarkably, an additional symmetry is required to protect the topological phase.
We propose a tensor network method for investigating strongly disordered systems that is based on an adaptation of entanglement renormalization [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)]. This method makes use of the strong disorder renormalization group to determine the order in which lattice sites are coarse-grained, which sets the overall structure of the corresponding tensor network ansatz, before optimization using variational energy minimization. Benchmark results from the disordered XXZ model demonstrates that this approach accurately captures ground state entanglement in disordered…
We formulate a strong-disorder renormalization-group (SDRG) approach to study the beta function of the tight-binding model in one dimension with both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder for states at the band center. We show that the SDRG method, when used to compute transport properties, yields exact results since it is identical to the transfer matrix method. The beta function is shown to be universal when only off-diagonal disorder is present even though single-parameter scaling is known to be violated. A different single-parameter scaling theory is formulated for this particular (particle-h…
We implement an efficient strong-disorder renormalization-group (SDRG) procedure to study disordered tight-binding models in any dimension and on the Erdos-Renyi random graphs, which represent an appropriate infinite dimensional limit. Our SDRG algorithm is based on a judicious elimination of most (irrelevant) new bonds generated under RG. It yields excellent agreement with exact numerical results for universal properties at the critical point without significant increase of computer time, and confirm that, for Anderson localization, the upper critical dimension duc = infinite. We find excelle…
Quenched randomness can lead to robust non-equilibrium phases of matter in periodically driven (Floquet) systems. Analyzing transitions between such dynamical phases requires a method capable of treating the twin complexities of disorder and discrete time-translation symmetry. We introduce a real-space renormalization group approach, asymptotically exact in the strong-disorder limit, and exemplify its use on the periodically driven interacting quantum Ising model. We analyze the universal physics near the critical lines and multicritical point of this model, and demonstrate the robustness of o…
We study the renormalization group flow in general quantum field theories with quenched disorder, focusing on random quantum critical points. We show that in disorder-averaged correlation functions the flow mixes local and non-local operators. This leads to a new crossover exponent related to the disorder (as in classical disorder). We show that the time coordinate is rescaled at each RG step, leading to Lifshitz scaling at critical points. We write a universal formula for the dynamical scaling exponent z for weak disorder.
We study the electron-electron interaction contribution to the conductivity of two-dimensional In$_{0.2}$Ga$_{0.8}$As electron systems in the diffusion regime over the wide conductivity range, $σ\simeq(1-150) G_0$, where $G_0=e^2/(2π^2\hbar)$. We show that the data are well described within the framework of the one-loop approximation of the renormalization group (RG) theory when the conductivity is relatively high, $σ\gtrsim 15 G_0$. At lower conductivity, the experimental results are found to be in drastic disagreement with the predictions of this theory. The theory predicts much stronger ren…
We use a tensor network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG) method to study spin-1 random Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains. The ground state of the clean spin-1 Heisenberg chain with uniform nearest-neighbor couplings is a gapped phase known as the Haldane phase. Here we consider disordered chains with random couplings, in which the Haldane gap closes in the strong disorder regime. As the randomness strength is increased further and exceeds a certain threshold, the random chain undergoes a phase transition to a critical random-singlet phase. The strong-disorder renormalization gro…
We study quenched disorder in strongly correlated systems via holography, focusing on the thermodynamic effects of mild electric disorder. Disorder is introduced through a random potential which is assumed to self-average on macroscopic scales. Studying the flow of this distribution with energy scale leads us to develop a holographic functional renormalization scheme. We test this scheme by computing thermodynamic quantities and confirming that the Harris criterion for relevance, irrelevance or marginality of quenched disorder holds.
We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in a one-dimensional fermion lattice coupled adiabatically to infinite reservoirs. We employ both the functional renormalization group (FRG) as well as matrix product state techniques, which serve as an accurate benchmark for small systems. Using the FRG, we compute the length- and temperature-dependence of the conductance averaged over $10^4$ samples for lattices as large as $10^{5}$ sites. We identify regimes in which non-ohmic power law behavior can be observed and demonstrate that the corresponding exponents can be understood by adapting …
Novel randomness-induced disordered ground states in two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin systems have been attracting much interest. For quantitative analysis of such random quantum spin systems, one of the most promising numerical approaches is the tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG), which was basically established for one-dimensional (1D) systems. In this paper, we propose a possible improvement of its algorithm toward 2D random spin systems, focusing on a generating process of the tree network structure of tensors, and precisely examine their performances for the ran…
We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and short-range-correlated disorder in three dimensional systems where absent disorder the non-interacting band structure hosts a quadratic band crossing. Though the clean Coulomb problem is believed to host a 'non-Fermi liquid' phase, disorder and Coulomb interactions have the same scaling dimension in a renormalization group (RG) sense, and thus should be treated on an equal footing. We therefore implement a controlled $ε$-expansion and apply it at leading order to derive RG flow equations valid when disorder and interactions are both weak…
We employ an adaptation of a strong-disorder renormalization-group technique in order to analyze the ferro-paramagnetic quantum phase transition of Ising chains with aperiodic but deterministic couplings under the action of a transverse field. In the presence of marginal or relevant geometric fluctuations induced by aperiodicity, for which the critical behavior is expected to depart from the Onsager universality class, we derive analytical and asymptotically exact expressions for various critical exponents (including the correlation-length and the magnetization exponents, which are not easily …
Using the recently introduced adaptive density-matrix renormalization-group method, we study the many spin-spin correlations of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with random coupling constants, namely, the mean value of the bulk and of the end-to-end correlations, the typical value of the bulk correlations, and the distribution of the bulk correlations. Our results are in striking agreement with the predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group method. We do not find any hint of logarithmic corrections neither in the bulk average correlations, which were recently rep…
We propose an entanglement-based algorithm of the tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG) method for quantum spin systems with quenched randomness. In contrast to the previous tSDRG algorithm based on the energy spectrum of renormalized block Hamiltonians, we directly utilizes the entanglement structure associated with the blocks to be renormalized. We examine accuracy of the new algorithm for the random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on the one-dimensional, triangular, and square lattices. We then find that the entanglement-based tSDRG achieves better accuracy than t…
We consider the two dimensional disordered Bose gas which present a metallic state at low temperatures. A simple model of an interacting Bose system in a random field is propose to consider the interaction effect on the transition in the metallic state.
We develop a dynamical approach based on the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism to derive a field-theoretic description of disordered and interacting electron systems. We calculate within this formalism the perturbative RG equations for interacting electrons expanded around a diffusive Fermi liquid fixed point, as obtained originally by Finkelstein using replicas. The major simplifying feature of this approach, as compared to Finkelstein's is that instead of $N \to 0$ replicas, we only need to consider N=2 species. We compare the dynamical Schwinger-Keldysh approach and the replica methods, and we pr…
Recent concrete proposals suggest it is possible to engineer a two-dimensional bulk phase supporting non-Abelian Fibonacci anyons out of Abelian fractional quantum Hall systems. The low-energy degrees of freedom of such setups can be modeled as $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions "hopping" on a two-dimensional lattice. We use the density matrix renormalization group to study a model of this type interpolating between the decoupled-chain, triangular-lattice, and square-lattice limits. The results show clear evidence of the Fibonacci phase over a wide region of the phase diagram, most notably including …
Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magneti…
We study one dimensional wires with spin-orbit coupling. We show that in the presence of Zeeman field and strong electron-electron interaction a clean wire may form fractional helical liquid states with phenomenology similar to fractional quantum Hall liquids. Most notably, the wire's two terminal conductance is predicted to show fractional quantized conductance plateaus at low electron density. When the system is proximity-coupled to a superconductor, fractional Majorana bound states may be stabilized. We discuss how disorder destabilizes these fractional phases. Possible experimental realiza…
We study the Kitaev spin ladder with random couplings by using the real-space renormalization group technique. This model is the minimum model in Kitaev systems that has conserved plaquette fluxes, and its quasi-one-dimensional geometry makes it possible to study the strong-disorder fixed points for both spin- and flux- excitation gaps. In the Ising limit, the behavior of the spin gap is consistent with the familiar random transverse-field Ising chain, but the flux gap is dominated by the y-coupling. In the XX limit, while the x- and y-couplings are renormalized simultaneously, the z-couplings…
Recently Hermele et. al claimed that the infrared (IR) fixed point of non-compact $QED_3$ is stable against instanton excitations in the limit of large flavors of massless Dirac fermions [cond-mat/0404751]. We investigate an effect of non-magnetic disorder on the deconfined quantum critical phase dubbed U(1) spin liquid ($U1SL$) in the context of quantum antiferromagnet. In the case of weak disorder the IR fixed point remains stable against the presence of both the instanton excitations and non-magnetic disorder and thus the $U1SL$ is sustained. In the case of strong disorder the IR fixed poin…
The $ν=12/5$ fractional quantum Hall plateau observed in $\mathrm{GaAs}$ semiconductor wells is a suspect in the search for non-Abelian Fibonacci anyons. Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group, we find clear evidence that fillings $ν= 12/5$ and $ν=13/5$ are in the $k = 3$ Read-Rezayi phase in the absence of particle-hole symmetry-breaking effects. The lowest energy charged excitation is identified as a non-Abelian Fibonacci anyon, distinguished from its Abelian counterpart by its local quadrupole moment. However, several experiments at $ν= 13/5$ observe a re-entrant integer qu…
We present a Keldysh nonlinear sigma-model approach to the renormalization group analysis of the disordered electron liquid. We include both the Coulomb interaction and Fermi-liquid type interactions in the singlet and triplet channels into the formalism. Based on this model, we reproduce the coupled renormalization group equations for the diffusion coefficient, the frequency, and interaction constants previously derived with the replica model in the imaginary time technique. With the help of source fields coupling to the particle-number and spin densities, we study the density-density and spi…
We develop a renormalization group for weak Harris-marginal disorder in otherwise strongly interacting quantum critical theories, focusing on systems which have emergent conformal invariance. Using conformal perturbation theory, we argue that previously proposed random lines of fixed points with Lifshitz scaling in fact flow towards other universal fixed points, and this flow is captured by a "one-loop" analysis. Our approach appears best controlled in theories with only a few operators with low scaling dimension. In this regime, we compare our predictions for the flow of disorder to holograph…
In this paper we analyze the renormalization group (RG) flow of field theories with quenched disorder, in which the couplings vary randomly in space. We analyze both classical (Euclidean) disorder and quantum disorder, emphasizing general properties rather than specific cases. The RG flow of the disorder-averaged theories takes place in the space of their coupling constants and also in the space of distributions for the disordered couplings, and the two mix together. We write down a generalization of the Callan-Symanzik equation for the flow of disorder-averaged correlation functions. We find …
We propose a simple modification of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in order to tackle strongly disordered quantum spin chains. Our proposal, akin to the idea of the adaptive time-dependent DMRG, enables us to reach larger system sizes in the strong disorder limit by avoiding most of the metastable configurations which hinder the performance of the standard DMRG method. We benchmark our adaptive method by revisiting the random antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 chain for which we compute the random-singlet ground-state average spin-spin correlation functions and von Neumann …
We report a detailed study of the influence of the electron-electron interaction on physical observables (conductance, etc.) of a disordered electron liquid in double quantum well heterostructure. We find that even in the case of common elastic scattering off electrons in both quantum wells, the asymmetry in the electron-electron interaction across and within quantum wells decouples them at low temperatures. Our results are in quantitative agreement with recent transport experiments on the gated double quantum well Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs/Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterostructures.
Motivated by the presence of Ising transitions that take place entirely in the singlet sector of frustrated spin-1/2 ladders and spin-1 chains, we study two types of effective dimer models on ladders, a quantum dimer model and a quantum loop model. Building on the constraints imposed on the dimers, we develop a Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm that takes full advantage of the relatively small Hilbert space that only grows as Fibonacci number. We further show that both models can be mapped rigorously onto a hard-boson model first studied by Fendley, Sengupta and Sachdev [Phys. Rev…
We study the effect of quenched disorder on the semimetal-superconductor quantum phase transition in a model of two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with $N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions, using perturbative renormalization group methods at one-loop order in a double epsilon expansion. For $N\geq 2$ we find that the Harris-stable clean critical behavior gives way, past a certain critical disorder strength, to a finite-disorder critical point characterized by non-Gaussian critical exponents, a noninteger dynamic critical exponent $z>1$, and a finite Yukawa coupling between Dirac fermions a…
Many phases of matter, including superconductors, fractional quantum Hall fluids and spin liquids, are described by gauge theories with constrained Hilbert spaces. However, thermalization and the applicability of quantum statistical mechanics has primarily been studied in unconstrained Hilbert spaces. In this article, we investigate whether constrained Hilbert spaces permit local thermalization. Specifically, we explore whether the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) holds in a pinned Fibonacci anyon chain, which serves as a representative case study. We first establish that the constra…
The low-temperature thermal conductivity κ_0/T of d-wave superconductors is generally thought to attain a "universal" value independent of disorder at sufficiently low temperatures, providing an important measure of the magnitude of the gap slope near its nodes. We discuss situations in which this inference can break down because of competing order, and quasiparticle localization. Specifically, we study an inhomogeneous BCS mean field model with electronic correlations included via a Hartree approximation for the Hubbard interaction, and show that the suppression of κ_0/T by localization effec…
We present a detailed study of thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid with short-range interactions. At temperatures smaller than the impurity scattering rate, i.e., in the diffusive regime, thermal conductivity acquires non-analytic quantum corrections. When these quantum corrections become large at low temperatures, the calculation of thermal conductivity demands a theoretical approach that treats disorder and interactions on an equal footing. In this paper, we develop such an approach by merging Luttinger's idea of using gravitational potentials for the analysis of thermal phenome…
We study the effects of quenched disorder and a dissipative Coulomb interaction on an anyon gas in a periodic potential undergoing a quantum phase transition. We use a $(2+1)$d low-energy effective description that involves $N_f = 1$ Dirac fermion coupled to a $U(1)$ Chern-Simons gauge field at level $(θ- 1/2)$. When $θ= 1/2$ the anyons are free Dirac fermions that exhibit an integer quantum Hall transition; when $θ= 1$ the anyons are bosons undergoing a superconductor-insulator transition in the universality class of the 3d XY model. Using the large $N_f$ approximation we perform a renormaliz…
We study the interplay of disorder and interaction effects including bosonic degrees of freedom in the framework of a generic one-dimensional transport model, the Anderson-Edwards model. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique, we extract the localization length and the renormalization of the Tomonaga Luttinger liquid parameter from the charge-structure factor by a elaborate sample-average finite-size scaling procedure. The properties of the Anderson localized state can be described in terms of scaling relations of the metallic phase without disorder. We analyze how disorder c…
Based on the self-consistent T-matrix approximation (SCTMA), analytical theory of density of states (DOS) in three-dimensional quantum magnets with the bond disorder is proposed. It successfully describes DOS in both cases of resonant and non-resonant scattering which appearance is governed by the ratio of scattering length and the average distance between impurities. Corrections to the quasiparticles band gap in these cases are shown to be $\propto c^{2/3}$ and $\propto c$, respectively. Moreover, the theory yields a semi-circle form of DOS for the bound states inside the gap which results in…
