We consider the two dimensional disordered Bose gas which present a metallic state at low temperatures. A simple model of an interacting Bose system in a random field is propose to consider the interaction effect on the transition in the metallic state.
We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study a disordered S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum spin model with three different nearest-neighbor interactions, J1<=J2<=J3, on the square lattice. We consider the regime in which J1 represents weak bonds, and J2 and J3 correspond to two kinds of stronger bonds (dimers) which are randomly distributed on columns forming coupled 2-leg ladders. When increasing the average intra-dimer coupling (J2+J3)/2, the system undergoes a Neel to quantum glass transition of the ground state and later a second transition into a quantum paramagnet. The quantum glass phase is …
In disordered spin systems with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange, transitions into and out of a magnetic-field-induced ordered phase pass through a unique regime. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the zero-temperature behavior, these intermediate regions are determined to be a Bose-Glass phase. The localization of field-induced triplons causes a finite compressibility and hence glassiness in the disordered phase.
Comment on the paper "Absence of the Mott Glass Phase in 1D Disordered Fermionic Systems" by T. Nattermann, A. Petkovic, Z. Ristivojevic, and F. Schutze, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 186402 (2007).
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
Motivated by puzzling characteristics of spin-glass transitions widely observed in pyrochlore-based frustrated materials, we investigate effects of coupling to local lattice distortions in a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the spin-glass transition temperature $\TSG$ is largely enhanced by the spin-lattice coupling, and furthermore, becomes almost independent of $Δ$ in a wide range of the disorder strength $Δ$. The critical property of the spin glass transition is indistinguishable from that of the canonical Heisenber…
We analyze an interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a 1D disordered potential using a combination of renormalization group and variational methods. We obtain the complete phase diagram in the incommensurate case as a function of bosonic and inter-species interaction strengths, in the weak disorder limit. We find that the system is characterized by several phase transitions between superfluid and various glassy insulating states, including a new Bose-Fermi glass phase, where both species are coupled and localized. We show that the dynamical structure factor, as measured through Bragg scattering exp…
Cu-NMR study has been performed on the disordered spin-gap system Tl1-xKxCuCl3 In the high-field H > HC=Δ/μ_B, where Δis the spin-gap, the hyperfine field becomes extremely inhomogeneous at low temperatures due to the field-induced magnetic order, indicating that the ordered spin state must be different from the pure TlCuCl3. In the low field H < HC, a saturating behavior in the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 was observed at low temperatures, indicating existence of the magnetic ground state proposed to be Bose-glass phase by Fisher.
Recent experiments on the amorphous magnetic semiconductor Gd_x Si_{1-x}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4652 (1996), ibid 83, 2266 (1999), ibid 84, 5411 (2000), ibid 85, 848 (2000), have revealed an insulator-metal transition (i-m-t), as a function of doping and magnetic field, a spin glass state at low temperature, and colossal magnetoresistance close to the i-m-t. There are also signatures of strong electron-electron interaction close to the i-m-t. Motivated by these results we examine the role of doped magnetic moments in a strongly disordered electron system. In this paper we study a model of elect…
We study by numerical simulation a disordered Bose-Hubbard model in low-dimensional lattices. We show that a proper characterization of the phase diagram on finite disordered clusters requires the knowledge of probability distributions of physical quantities rather than their averages. This holds in particular for determining the stability region of the Bose-glass phase, the compressible but not superfluid phase that exists whenever disorder is present. This result suggests that a similar statistical analysis should be performed also to interpret experiments on cold gases trapped in disordered…
We have combined the dynamical mean field theories of the Mott transition and the spin glass in infinite dimensions and derived a metallic spin-glass state from a random spin-fermion model.
Disordered systems form one of the centrestages of research in many body sciences and lead to a plethora of interesting phenomena and applications. A paradigmatic disordered system consists of an one-dimensional array of quantum spin-1/2 particles, governed by the Heisenberg spin glass Hamiltonian with natural or engineered quenched disordered couplings in an external magnetic field. These systems allow disorder-induced enhancement for bipartite and multipartite observables. Here we show that simultaneous application of independent quenched disorders results in disorder-induced enhancement, wh…
The physics of disordered alloys, such as typically the well known case of CeNi1-xCux alloys, showing an interplay among the Kondo effect, the spin glass state and a magnetic order, has been studied firstly within an average description like in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Recently, a theoretical model (PRB 74, 014427 (2006)) involving a more local description of the intersite interaction has been proposed to describe the phase diagram of CeNi1-xCux. This alloy is an example of the complex interplay between Kondo effect and frustration in which there is in particular the onset of a clust…
By means of Monte Carlo techniques, we study the role of disorder on a system of hard-core bosons in a two-leg ladder with both intra-chain ($t$) and inter-chain ($t^\prime$) hoppings. We find that the phase diagram as a function of the boson density, disorder strength, and $t^\prime/t$ is far from being trivial. This contrasts the case of spin-less fermions where standard localization arguments apply and an Anderson-localized phase pervades the whole phase diagram. A compressible Bose-glass phase always intrudes between the Mott insulator with zero (or one) bosons per site and the superfluid …
A comparative study on as cast and annealed rare earth bulk metallic glass (BMG) with composition Tb36Sm20Al24Co20 has been carried out by magnetization measurements. The as cast amorphous sample shows non-ergodic magnetization but does not show the behavior expected from magnetic glass. After annealing, the partially crystallized BMG shows this magnetic glass behavior. This is confirmed by the established measurement protocol of cooling and heating in unequal fields (CHUF).
A new 3d-5d hybridized quadruple perovskite oxide, CaCu3Mn2Ir2O12, was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The Rietveld structure analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in an AA'3B4O12-type perovskite structure with space group Im-3, where the Ca and Cu are 1:3 ordered at fixed atomic positions. At the B site the 3d Mn and the 5d Ir ions are disorderly distributed due to a rare equal +4 charge states for both of them as determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions among Cu2+, Mn4+, and Ir4+ ions give…
We determine the pre-asymptotic critical behavior at the quantum ferromagnetic transition in strongly disordered metals. We find that it is given by effective power laws, in contrast to the previously analyzed asymptotic critical behavior, which is valid only in an unobservably small region. The consequences for analyzing experiments are discussed, in particular ways to distinguish between critical behavior and Griffiths-phase effects.
The competition between spin glass, ferromagnetism and Kondo effect is analysed here in a Kondo lattice model with an inter-site random coupling $J_{ij}$ between the localized magnetic moments given by a generalization of the Mattis model which represents an interpolation between ferromagnetism and a highly disordered spin glass. Functional integral techniques with Grassmann fields have been used to obtain the partition function. The static approximation and the replica symmetric ansatz have also been used. The solution of the problem is presented as a phase diagram giving $T/{J}$ {\it versus}…
The competition between spin glass (SG), antiferromagnetism (AF) and Kondo effect is studied here in a model which consists of two Kondo sublattices with a gaussian random interaction between spins in differents sublattices with an antiferromagnetic mean Jo and standard deviation J. In the present approach there is no hopping of the conduction electrons between the sublattices and only spins in different sublattices can interact. The problem is formulated in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields which can be solved at me…
SrTi0.5Mn0.5O3 (STMO) is a chemically disordered perovskite having random distribution of Ti and Mn over 1b site. Striking discrepancies about the structural and magnetic properties of STMO demands detailed analysis which is addressed. To explore the magnetic ground state of STMO, static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied over a broad temperature range (2-300 K). The dc, ac magnetization show a cusp like peak at Tf ~ 14 K, which exhibits field and frequency dependence. The thermoremanent magnetization is characterized by using stretched exponential function and characteristic time su…
We present a field theory for a structurally disordered magnetic system coupled to a metallic environment near a quantum critical point. We show that close to the magnetic quantum critical point droplets are formed due to the disorder and undergo dissipative quantum dynamics. We show that the problem has a characteristic energy scale, the droplet Kondo temperature, that determines the crossover energy scale from weak to strong coupling. Our results have direct significance for the Griffiths-McCoy singularities of itinerant magnets.
We study the disordered XYZ spin chain using the recently developed Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group (SBRG) numerical method. With strong disorder, the phase diagram consists of three many body localized (MBL) spin glass phases. We argue that, with sufficiently strong disorder, these spin glass phases are separated by marginally many-body localized (MBL) critical lines. We examine the critical lines of this model by measuring the entanglement entropy and Edwards-Anderson spin glass order parameter, and find that the critical lines are characterized by an effective central charge c'=l…
