We prove that there is a projective K3 surface admitting a (fixed point) free automorphism of positive entropy and that no smooth compact Kähler surface other than projective K3 surfaces and their blow up admits such an automorphism.
We initiate the study of random iteration of automorphisms of real and complex projective surfaces, or more generally compact K{ä}hler surfaces, focusing on the fundamental problem of classification of stationary measures. We show that, in a number of cases, such stationary measures are invariant, and provide criteria for uniqueness, smoothness and rigidity of invariant probability measures. This involves a variety of tools from complex and algebraic geometry, random products of matrices, non-uniform hyperbolicity, as well as recent results of Brown and Rodriguez Hertz on random iteration of s…
Suppose that $X$ is a smooth, projective threefold over $\mathbb C$ and that $ϕ: X \to X$ is an automorphism of positive entropy. We show that one of the following must hold, after replacing $ϕ$ by an iterate: i) the canonical class of $X$ is numerically trivial; ii) $ϕ$ is imprimitive; iii) $ϕ$ is not dynamically minimal. As a consequence, we show that if a smooth threefold $M$ does not admit a primitive automorphism of positive entropy, then no variety constructed by a sequence of smooth blow-ups of $M$ can admit a primitive automorphism of positive entropy. In explaining why the method does…
We show that, in any dimension greater than one, there are an abelian variety, a smooth rational variety and a Calabi-Yau manifold, with primitive birational automorphisms of first dynamical degree $>1$. We also show that there are smooth complex projective Calabi-Yau manifolds and smooth rational manifolds, of any even dimension, with primitive biregular automorphisms of positive topological entropy.
That short note, meant as an addendum to [CCE14], enhances the results contained in loc. cit. In particular it is proven here that a linear K{ä}hler group is already the fundamental group of a smooth complex projective variety. This is achieved by studying the relative deformation of the total space of a smooth family of tori in an equivariant context.
The author determines the structure of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves of degree at least four. Furthermore, he gives some upper bounds for the order of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves and classifies the cases with large automorphism groups. This paper also contains a simple proof of the uniqueness of smooth plane curves with the full automorphism group of maximal order for each degree.
We study automorphism groups of smooth quintic threefolds. Especially, we describe all the maximal ones with explicit examples of target quintic threefolds. There are exactly $22$ such groups.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface of dimension at least three. We show that every automorphism of the Hilbert square $X^{[2]}$ of $X$ is induced by some automorphism of $X$.
We show that every reductive subgroup of the automorphism group of a quasi-smooth well formed weighted complete intersection is a restriction of a subgroup in the automorphism group in the ambient weighted projective space. Also, we provide examples demonstrating that an automorphism group of a quasi-smooth well formed Fano weighted complete intersection may be infinite and even non-reductive.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
In this paper, we classify groups which faithfully act on smooth cubic threefolds. It turns out that there are exactly $6$ maximal ones and we describe them with explicit examples of target cubic threefolds.
We determine the geometric structure of a minimal projective threefold having two `independent and commutative' automorphisms of positive topological entropy, and generalize this result to higher-dimensional smooth minimal pairs (X, G). As a consequence, we give an effective lower bound for the first dynamical degree of these automorphisms of X fitting the `boundary case'.
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a prime number p is the order of an automorphism of a smooth cubic hypersurface of P^{n+1}, for a fixed n > 1. We also provide a computational method to classify all such hypersurfaces that admit an automorphism of prime order p. In particular, we show that p<2^{n+1} and that any such hypersurface admitting an automorphism of order p>2^n is isomorphic to the Klein n-fold. We apply our method to compute exhaustive lists of automorphism of prime order of smooth cubic threefolds and fourfolds. Finally, we provide an application to the moduli…
We obtain the list of automorphism groups for smooth plane sextic curves over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic p=0 or p>21. Moreover, we assign to each group a geometrically complete family over K describing its corresponding stratum, that is, a generic defining polynomial equation with parameters such that any curve in the stratum is K-isomorphic to a non-singular plane model obtained by specializing the values of those parameters over K.
We show, among other things, that for each integer $n \ge 3$, there is a smooth complex projective rational variety of dimension $n$, with discrete non-finitely generated automorphism group and with infinitely many mutually non-isomorphic real forms. Our result is inspired by the work of Lesieutre and the work of Dinh and Oguiso.
We settle the automorphism groups of curves appearing in a classification list of smooth plane curves with at least two Galois points. One of them is an ordinary curve whose automorphism group exceeds the Hurwitz bound.
Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface $X$ of degree $d\geq4$ in a projective space $\mathbb P^{n+1}$. We consider a projection of $X$ from $p\in\mathbb P^{n+1}$ to a plane $H\cong\mathbb P^n$. This projection induces an extension of function fields $\mathbb C(X)/\mathbb C(\mathbb P^n)$. The point $p$ is called a Galois point if the extension is Galois. In this paper, we will give a necessary and sufficient conditions for $X$ to have Galois points by using linear automorphisms.
We show that there is a smooth complex projective variety, of any dimension greater than or equal to two, whose automorphism group is discrete and not finitely generated. Moreover, this variety admits infinitely many real forms which are mutually non-isomorphic over the real number field. Our result is inspired by the work of Lesieutre and answers questions by Dolgachev, Esnault and Lesieutre.
We classify all possible automorphism groups of smooth cubic surfaces over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. As an intermediate step we also classify automorphism groups of quartic del Pezzo surfaces. We show that the moduli space of smooth cubic surfaces is rational in every characteristic, determine the dimensions of the strata admitting each possible isomorphism class of automorphism group, and find explicit normal forms in each case. Finally, we completely characterize when a smooth cubic surface in positive characteristic, together with a group action, can be lift…
This is a continuation of [Og12], concerning automorphisms of smooth quartic K3 surfaces and birational automorphisms of ambient projective three spaces.
We show the existence of an anti-pluricanonical curve on every smooth projective rational surface X which has an infinite group G of automorphisms of either null entropy or of type Z . Z (semi-direct product), provided that the pair (X, G) is minimal. This was conjectured by Curtis T. McMullen (2005) and further traced back to Marat Gizatullin and Brian Harbourne (1987). We also prove (perhaps) the strongest form of the famous Tits alternative theorem.
This paper investigates the structure of the automorphism scheme of a smooth canonically polarized surface $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. In particular it is investigated when Aut(X) is not smooth. This is a situation that appears only in positive characteristic and it is closely related to the structure of the moduli stack of canonically polarized surfaces. Restrictions on certain numerical invariants of X are obtained in order for Aut(X) to be smooth or not and information is provided about the structure of the component of Aut(X) containing the identity.…
This paper investigates the geometry of a smooth canonically polarized surface $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ in the case when the automorphism scheme of $X$ is not smooth. This is a situation that appears only in positive characteristic and it is closely related to the structure of the moduli stack of canonically polarized surfaces. Restrictions on certain numerical invariants of $X$ are obtained in order for Aut(X) to be smooth or not and information is provided about the structure of the component of Aut(X) containing the identity. In particular, it i…
We show that the automorphism group of a certain subclass of smooth Gizatullin surfaces with a distinguished and rigid extended divisor is generated by automorphisms of A1-fibrations. Moreover, such surfaces provide examples of smooth Gizatullin surfaces with a non-transitive action of the automorphism group. Thus, they represent counterexamples to Gizatullin's conjecture. For such surfaces we give explicit orbits of the natural action of the automorphism group in some special cases. Further, we present their automorphism groups as amalgamated products of two subgroups.
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a positive integer q is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d, for every d>2, n>1, (n,d)\neq (2,4), and \gcd(q,d)=\gcd(q,d-1)=1. This allows us to give a complete criterion in the case where q=p is a prime number. In particular, we show the following result: If X is a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d admitting an automorphism of prime order p then p<(d-1)^{n+1}; and if p>(d-1)^n then X is isomorphic to the Klein hypersurface, n=2 or n+2 is prime, and p=Φ_{n+2}(1-d) where Φ_{n+2} i…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and let $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $α_{0}$ denote the highest root of $G$ with respect to $T$ and $B.$ Let $P$ be the stabiliser of $X(w)$ in $G.$ In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is simply laced and $X(w)$ is smooth, then the connected component of the automorphism group of $X(w)$ containing the identity automorphism equals $P$ if and on…
In this note, we prove that every automorphism of a rational manifold which is obtained from $\Bbb{P}^k$ by a finite sequence blow-ups along smooth centers of dimension at most r with k>2r+2 has zero topological entropy.
In this paper, we show that the average size of the automorphism group over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of a smooth degree $d$ hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n}_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ is equal to $1$ as $d\rightarrow \infty$. We also discuss some consequence of this result for the moduli space of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$.
Recently, the first author classified finite groups obtained as automorphism groups of smooth plane curves of degree $d \ge 4$ into five types. He gave an upper bound of the order of the automorphism group for each types. For one of them, the type (a-ii), that is given by $\max \left\{ 2 d (d - 2), 60 d \right\}$. In this article, we shall construct typical examples of smooth plane curve $C$ by applying the method of Galois points, whose automorphism group has order $60 d$. In fact, we determine the structure of the automorphism group of those curves.
Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 1$ and degree $d\geq 3$ in the projective space given as the zero set of a homogeneous form $F$. If $(n,d)\neq (1,3), (2,4)$ it is well known that every automorphism of $X$ extends to an automorphism of the projective space, i.e., $\operatorname{Aut}(X)\subseteq \operatorname{PGL}(n+2,\mathbb{C})$. We say that the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ is $F$-liftable if there exists a subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(n+2,\mathbb{C})$ projecting isomorphically onto $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ and leaving $F$ invariant. Our main result in this …
Quasi-homogeneous surfaces, or Gizatullin surfaces, are normal affine surfaces such that there exists an open orbit of the automorphism group with a finite complement. If the action of the automorphism group is transitive, the surface is called homogeneous. Examples of non-homogeneous Gizatullin surfaces were constructed in [Ko], but on more restricted conditions. We show that a similar result holds under less constrained assumptions. Moreover, we exhibit examples of smooth affine surfaces with a non-transitive action of the automorphism group whereas the automorphism group is huge. This means…
We provide the existence, for every complex rational smooth affine curve $Γ$, of a linear action of $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$ on the affine 3-dimensional space $\mathbb{A}^3$, together with a $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$-equivariant closed embedding of $Γ$ into $\mathbb{A}^3$. It is not possible to decrease the dimension of the target, the reason for this obstruction is also precisely described.
We show that all the automorphisms of the symmetric product Sym^d(X), d>2g-2, of a smooth projective curve X of genus g>2 are induced by automorphisms of X.
We classify the polarized symplectic automorphisms of Fano varieties of smooth cubic fourfolds (equipped with the Plücker polarization) and study the fixed loci.
It was proved by Tien-Cuong Dinh and me that there is a smooth complex projective surface whose automorphism group is discrete and not finitely generated. In this paper, we will show that there is a smooth projective surface, birational to some K3 surface, such that the automorphism group is discrete and not finitely generated, over any algebraically closed field of odd characteristic except precisely an algebraic closure of the prime field.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group. In this note we prove that for a quasi-affine $G$-spherical variety the weight monoid is determined by the weights of its non-trivial $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions that are homogeneous with respect to a Borel subgroup of $G$. As an application we get that a smooth affine $G$-spherical variety that is non-isomorphic to a torus is determined by its automorphism group inside the category of smooth affine irreducible varieties.
We classify minimal pairs (X, G) for smooth rational projective surface X and finite group G of automorphisms on X. We also determine the fixed locus X^G and the quotient surface Y = X/G as well as the fundamental group of the smooth part of Y. The realization of each pair is included. Mori's extremal ray theory and recent results of Alexeev and also Ambro on the existence of good anti-canonical divisors are used.
