We study the random matrices of type $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$, where $W$ is a complex Wishart matrix of parameters $(dn,dm)$, and $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is a self-adjoint linear map. We prove that, under suitable assumptions, we have the $d\to\infty$ eigenvalue distribution formula $δm\tilde{W}\simπ_{mnρ}\boxtimesν$, where $ρ$ is the law of $φ$, viewed as a square matrix, $π$ is the free Poisson law, $ν$ is the law of $D=φ(1)$, and $δ=tr(D)$.
This article is concerned with the joint law of an integrated Wishart bridge process and the trace of an integrated inverse Wishart bridge process over the interval $ \left[0,t\right] $. Its Laplace transform is obtained by studying the Wishart bridge processes and the absolute continuity property of Wishart laws.
In the paper we resolve positively the conjecture on a characterization of matrix Kummer and Wishart laws through independence property, which was posed in [Koudou, Statist. Probab. Lett. 82 (2012), 1903--1907] . Apart from the probabilistic result, we determine the general solution of the functional equation associated to the characterization problem under weak assumptions.
In this paper we study the limiting distribution of the $k$ smallest gaps between eigenvalues of three kinds of random matrices -- the Ginibre ensemble, the Wishart ensemble and the universal unitary ensemble. All of them follow a Poissonian ansatz. More precisely, for the Ginibre ensemble we have a global result in which the $k$-th smallest gap has typical length $n^{-3/4}$ with density $x^{4k-1}e^{-x^4}$ after normalization. For the Wishart and the universal unitary ensemble, it has typical length $n^{-4/3}$ and has density $x^{3k-1}e^{-x^3}$ after normalization.
Associated to any complex Wishart matrix $W$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$ and any linear map $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is the "block-modified" matrix $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$. Following some previous work with Nechita, we study here the asymptotic $*$-distribution of $\tilde{W}$, in the $d\to\infty$ limit, in the case where the modification map $φ$ is "easy", or more generally super-easy, in the quantum algebra/representation theory sense. Under suitable assumptions on $φ$ we obtain in this way a compound free Poisson law.
We investigate the process of eigenvalues of a fractional Wishart process defined as N=B*B, where B is a matrix fractional Brownian motion recently studied by Nualart and Pérez-Abreu. Using stochastic calculus with respect to the Young integral we show that the eigenvalues do not collide at any time with probability one. When the matrix process B has entries given by independent fractional Brownian motions with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/2,1)$ we derive a stochastic differential equation in a Malliavin calculus sense for the eigenvalues of the corresponding fractional Wishart process. Finally a f…
We extend Stein's celebrated Wasserstein bound for normal approximation via exchangeable pairs to the multi-dimensional setting. As an intermediate step, we exploit the symmetry of exchangeable pairs to obtain an error bound for smooth test functions. We also obtain a continuous version of the multi-dimensional Wasserstein bound in terms of fourth moments. We apply the main results to multivariate normal approximations to Wishart matrices of size $n$ and degree $d$, where we obtain the optimal convergence rate $\sqrt{n^3/d}$ under only moment assumptions, and to quadratic forms and Poisson fun…
We study the partial transposition ${W}^Γ=(\mathrm{id}\otimes \mathrm{t})W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of a Wishart matrix $W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$. Our main result is that, with $d\to\infty$, the law of $m{W}^Γ$ is a free difference of free Poisson laws of parameters $m(n\pm 1)/2$. Motivated by questions in quantum information theory, we also derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these measures to be supported on the positive half line.
We consider the random geometric graph on $n$ vertices drawn uniformly from a $d$--dimensional sphere. We focus on the sparse regime, when the expected degree is constant independent of $d$ and $n$. We show that, when $d$ is larger than $n$ by logarithmic factors, this graph is comparable to the Erdős--Rényi random graph of the same edge density in the \emph{inclusion divergence} between the graph laws. This divergence functions in certain ways like a relaxation of the total variation distance, but is strong enough to distinguish Erdős--Rényi graphs of different densities with a higher resolut…
We find the asymptotic spectral distribution of random Kummer matrix. Then we formulate and prove a~free analogue of HV independence property, which is known for classical Kummer and Gamma random variables and for Kummer and Wishart matrices. We also prove a related characterization of free--Kummer and free--Poisson (Marchenko-Pastur) non--commutative random variables.
In the paper, upper bounds for the rate of convergence in laws of large numbers for mixed Poisson random sums are constructed. As a measure of the distance between the limit and pre-limit laws, the Zolotarev $ζ$-metric is used. The obtained results extend the known convergence rate estimates for geometric random sums (in the famous R{é}nyi theorem) to a considerably wider class of random indices with mixed Poisson distributions including, e. g., those with the (generalized) negative binomial distribution.
Let P := {X_i,i >= 1} be a stationary Poisson point process in R^d, {C_i,i >= 1} be a sequence of i.i.d. random sets in R^d, and {Y_i^t; t \geq 0, i >= 1} be i.i.d. {0,1}-valued continuous time stationary Markov chains. We define the Markov-Poisson-Boolean model C_t := {Y_i^t(X_i + C_i), i >= 1}. C_t represents the coverage process at time t. We first obtain limit laws for k-coverage of an area at an arbitrary instant. We then obtain the limit laws for the k-coverage seen by a particle as it moves along a one-dimensional path.
The free Meixner laws arise as the distributions of orthogonal polynomials with constant-coefficient recursions. We show that these are the laws of the free pairs of random variables which have linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances when conditioned with respect to their sum. We apply this result to describe free Levy processes with quadratic conditional variances, and to prove a converse implication related to asymptotic freeness of random Wishart matrices.
These lecture notes provide a comprehensive, self-contained introduction to the analysis of Wishart matrix moments. Random matrix theory plays a central role in statistical physics, computational mathematics and engineering sciences, including data assimilation, signal processing, combinatorial optimization, compressed sensing, econometrics and mathematical finance, among numerous others. Pitman~(1999) describes a duality relationship between fragmentation and coagulation operators. An explicit relationship is described for the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet laws, with parameters {\footnotesize $(α,θ)$} and $(β,θ/α)$, wherein $PD(α, θ)$ is coagulated by $PD(β,θ/α)$ for $0<α<1$, $0 \leqβ<1$ and $-β<θ/α$. This remarkable explicit agreement was obtained by combinatorial methods via exchangeable partition probability functions~(EPPF). This work discusses an alternative analysis which can feasibly extend the characterizations above to more general models of $PD(α,θ)$ coagulated wit…
We investigate the regularity of shot noise series and of Poisson integrals. We give conditions for the absolute continuity of their law with respect to Lebesgue measure and for their continuity in total variation norm. In particular, the case of truncated series in adressed. Our method relies on a disintegration of the probability space based on a mere conditioning by the first jumps of the underlying Poisson process.

In earlier stages in the introduction to asymptotic methods in probability theory, the weak convergence of sequences $(X_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of Binomial of random variables (\textit{rv}'s) to a Poisson law is classical and easy-to prove. A version of such a result concerning sequences $(Y_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of negative binomial \textit{rv}'s also exists. In both cases, $X_n$ and $Y_n-n$ are by-row sums $S_n[X]$ and $S_n[Y]$ of arrays of Bernoulli \textit{rv}'s and corrected geometric \textit{rv}'s respectively. When considered in the general frame of asymptotic theorems of by-row sums of \textit{rv}'s of…
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be a sequence of independent random points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with common Lebesgue density $f$. Under some conditions on $f$, we obtain a Poisson limit theorem, as $n \to \infty$, for the number of large probability $k$th-nearest neighbor balls of $X_1,\ldots,X_n$. Our result generalizes Theorem 2. of [10], which refers to the special case $k=1$. Our proof is completely different since it employs the Chen-Stein method instead of the method of moments. Moreover, we obtain a rate of convergence for the Poisson approximation.
Poisson thinning is an elementary result in probability, which is of great importance in the theory of Poisson point processes. In this article, we record a couple of characterization results on Poisson thinning. We also consider several free probability analogues of Poisson thinning, which we collectively dub as \emph{free Poisson thinning}, and prove characterization results for them, similar to the classical case. One of these free Poisson thinning procedures arises naturally as a high-dimensional asymptotic analogue of Cochran's theorem from multivariate statistics on the "Wishart-ness" of…
In this paper we study a wide and flexible family of discrete distributions, the so-called generalized negative binomial (GNB) distributions that are mixed Poisson distributions in which the mixing laws belong to the class of generalized gamma (GG) distributions. The latter was introduced by E. W. Stacy as a special family of lifetime distributions containing gamma, exponential power and Weibull distributions. These distributions seem to be very promising in the statistical description of many real phenomena being very convenient and almost universal models for the description of statistical r…
The group of affine transformations with rational coefficients acts naturally on the real line, but also on the $p$-adic fields. The aim of this note is to show that, for random walks whose laws have a finite first moment, all these actions are necessary and sufficient to describe the Poisson boundary, which is in fact the product of all the fields that contract in mean.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the empirical eigenvalues distribution of the partial transpose of a random quantum state. The limiting distribution was previously investigated via Wishart random matrices indirectly (by approximating the matrix of trace 1 by the Wishart matrix of random trace) and shown to be the semicircular distribution or the free difference of two free Poisson distributions, depending on how dimensions of the concerned spaces grow. Our use of Wishart matrices gives exact combinatorial formulas for the moments of the partial transpose of the random state. We find …
We establish a quantitative version of the Tracy--Widom law for the largest eigenvalue of high dimensional sample covariance matrices. To be precise, we show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a sample covariance matrix $X^*X$ converge to its Tracy--Widom limit at a rate nearly $N^{-1/3}$, where $X$ is an $M \times N$ random matrix whose entries are independent real or complex random variables, assuming that both $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity at a constant rate. This result improves the previous estimate $N^{-2/9}$ obtained by Wang [73]. Our proof relies on a Green function comp…
We present a new approach to absolute continuity of laws of Poisson functionals. The theoretical framework is that of local Dirichlet forms as a tool to study probability spaces. The method gives rise to a new explicit calculus that we show first on some simple examples : it consists in adding a particle and taking it back after computing the gradient. Then we apply it to SDE's driven by Poisson measure.
Bessel-type convolution algebras of bounded Borel measures on the matrix cones of positive semidefinite $q\times q$-matrices over $\mathbb R, \mathbb C, \mathbb H$ were introduced recently by Rösler. These convolutions depend on some continuous parameter, generate commutative hypergroup structures and have Bessel functions of matrix argument as characters. Here, we first study the rich algebraic structure of these hypergroups. In particular, the subhypergroups and automorphisms are classified, and we show that each quotient by a subhypergroup carries a hypergroup structure of the same type. Th…
We consider self-loops and multiple edges in the configuration model as the size of the graph tends to infinity. The interest in these random variables is due to the fact that the configuration model, conditioned on being simple, is a uniform random graph with prescribed degrees. Simplicity corresponds to the absence of self-loops and multiple edges. We show that the number of self-loops and multiple edges converges in distribution to two independent Poisson random variables when the second moment of the empirical degree distribution converges. We also provide an estimate on the total variatio…
We analyze a method to produce pairs of non independent Poisson processes $M(t),N(t)$ from positively correlated, self-decomposable, exponential renewals. In particular the present paper provides the family of copulas pairing the renewals, along with the closed form for the joint distribution $p_{m,n}(s,t)$ of the pair $\big(M(s),N(t)\big)$, an outcome which turns out to be instrumental to produce explicit algorithms for applications in finance and queuing theory. We finally discuss the cross-correlation properties of the two processes and the relative timing of their jumps
We consider a class of probability measures $μ_{s,r}^α$ which have explicit Cauchy-Stieltjes transforms. This class includes a symmetric beta distribution, a free Poisson law and some beta distributions as special cases. Also, we identify $μ_{s,2}^α$ as a free compound Poisson law with Lévy measure a monotone $α$-stable law. This implies the free infinite divisibility of $μ_{s,2}^α$. Moreover, when symmetric or positive, $μ_{s,2}^α$ has a representation as the free multiplication of a free Poisson law and a monotone $α$-stable law. We also investigate the free infinite divisibility of $μ_{s,r}…
In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This …
In this article the relation between the tail behaviours of a free regular infinitely divisible (positively supported) probability measure and its Lévy measure is studied. An important example of such a measure is the compound free Poisson distribution, which often occurs as a limiting spectral distribution of certain sequences of random matrices. We also describe a connection between an analogous classical result of Embrechts et al. [1979] and our result using the Bercovici-Pata bijection.
Using Malliavin operators together with an interpolation technique inspired by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon (1989), we prove a new inequality on the Poisson space, allowing one to measure the distance between the laws of a general random vector, and of a target random element composed of Gaussian and Poisson random variables. Several consequences are deduced from this result, in particular: (1) new abstract criteria for multidimensional stable convergence on the Poisson space, (2) a class of mixed limit theorems, involving both Poisson and Gaussian limits, (3) criteria for the asymptotic inde…
We study the connection between PDEs and Lévy processes running with clocks given by time-changed Poisson processes with stochastic drifts. The random times we deal with are therefore given by time-changed Poissonian jumps related to some Frobenious-Perron operators $K$ associated to random translations. Moreover, we also consider their hitting times as a random clock. Thus, we study processes driven by equations involving time-fractional operators (modelling memory) and fractional powers of the difference operator $I-K$ (modelling jumps). For this large class of processes we also provide, in …
In this note, we make explicit the law of the renormalized supercritical branching random walk, giving credit to a conjecture formulated in a previous works of the authors for a continuous analog of the branching random walk. Also, in the case of a branching random walk on a homogeneous tree, we express the law of the corresponding limiting renormalized Gibbs measures, confirming, in this discrete model, conjectures formulated by physicists about the Poisson-Dirichlet nature of the jumps in the limit, and precising the conjecture by giving the spatial distribution of these jumps.
We prove limit theorems for sums of functions of subtrees of binary search trees and random recursive trees. In particular, we give simple new proofs of the fact that the number of fringe trees of size $ k=k_n $ in the binary search tree and the random recursive tree (of total size $ n $) asymptotically has a Poisson distribution if $ k\rightarrow\infty $, and that the distribution is asymptotically normal for $ k=o(\sqrt{n}) $. Furthermore, we prove similar results for the number of subtrees of size $ k $ with some required property $ P $, for example the number of copies of a certain fixed s…
The occupation time of an age-dependent branching particle system in $\Rd$ is considered, where the initial population is a Poisson random field and the particles are subject to symmetric $α$-stable migration, critical binary branching and random lifetimes. Two regimes of lifetime distributions are considered: lifetimes with finite mean and lifetimes belonging to the normal domain of attraction of a $γ$-stable law, $γ\in(0,1)$. It is shown that in dimensions $d>αγ$ for the heavy-tailed lifetimes case, and $d>α$ for finite mean lifetimes, the occupation time proccess satisfies a strong law of l…
We introduce a new approach to absolute continuity of laws of Poisson functionals. It is based on the {\it energy image density} property for Dirichlet forms and on what we call {\it the lent particle method} which consists in adding a particle and taking it back after some calculation.
We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large $ m \times n $ real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of $ \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2}$)largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity $ \frac{1}π x^{-3/2} $ and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the maximum interpoint distance of random points in a $d$-dimensional set with a unique diameter and a smooth boundary at the poles. Instead of investigating only a fixed number of $n$ points as $n$ tends to infinity, we consider the much more general setting in which the random points are the supports of appropriately defined Poisson processes. The main result covers the case of uniformly distributed points within a $d$-dimensional ellipsoid with a unique major axis. Moreover, several generalizations of the main result are established, for example a limit l…
We show that the chaos representation of some Compound Poisson Type processes displays an underlying intrinsic combinatorial structure, partly independent of the chosen process. From the computational viewpoint, we solve the arising combinatorial complexity by means of the moments/cumulants duality for the laws of the corresponding processes, themselves measures on distributional spaces, and provide a combinatorial interpretation of the associated 'extended' Fock spaces. From the theoretical viewpoint, in the case of the Gamma measure, we trace back such complexity to its 'simplicial part', i.…
In this paper we consider the Porous Medium Equation and establish a relationship between its Kompanets-Zel'dovich-Barenblatt solution $u(\xd,t), \xd\in \mathbb R^d,t>0$ and random flights. The time-rescaled version of $u(\xd,t)$ is the fundamental solution of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation which governs the distribution of random flights performed by a particle whose displacements have a Dirichlet probability distribution and choosing directions uniformly on a $d$-dimensional sphere (see, e.g., \cite{dgo}). We consider the space-fractional version of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation and…
In this paper we obtain the limit distribution for partial sums with a random number of terms following a class of mixed Poisson distributions. The resulting weak limit is a mixing between a normal distribution and an exponential family, which we call by normal exponential family (NEF) laws. A new stability concept is introduced and a relationship between α-stable distributions and NEF laws is established. We propose estimation of the parameters of the NEF models through the method of moments and also by the maximum likelihood method, which is performed via an Expectation-Maximization algorith…
We study a class of Hermitian random matrices which includes and generalizes Wigner matrices, heavy-tailed random matrices, and sparse random matrices such as the adjacency matrices of Erdos-Renyi random graphs with p ~ 1/N. Our NxN random matrices have real entries which are i.i.d. up to symmetry. The distributions may depend on N, however, the sums of rows must converge in distribution; it is then well-known that the limiting distributions are infinitely divisible. We show that a limiting empirical spectral distribution (LSD) exists, and via local weak convergence of associated graphs, the L…
We introduce and study a remarkable family of real probability measures $π_{st}$, that we call free Bessel laws. These are related to the free Poisson law $π$ via the formulae $π_{s1}=π^{\boxtimes s}$ and $π_{1t}=π^{\boxplus t}$. Our study includes: definition and basic properties, analytic aspects (supports, atoms, densities), combinatorial aspects (functional transforms, moments, partitions), and a discussion of the relation with random matrices and quantum groups.
We propose a model for heterogeneous cellular networks assuming a space-time Poisson process of call arrivals, independently marked by data volumes, and served by different types of base stations (having different transmission powers) represented by the superposition of independent Poisson processes on the plane. Each station applies a processor sharing policy to serve users arriving in its vicinity, modeled by the Voronoi cell perturbed by some random signal propagation effects (shadowing). Users' peak service rates depend on their signal-to-interference-and-noise ratios (SINR) with respect t…
We show that a uniformly continuous random perturbation of a transitive map defines an aperiodic Harris chain which also satisfies Doeblin's condition. As a result, we get exponential decay of correlations for suitable random perturbations of such systems. We also prove that, for transitive maps, the limiting distribution for Extreme Value Laws (EVLs) and Hitting/Return Time Statistics (HTS/RTS) is standard exponential. Moreover, we show that the Rare Event Point Process (REPP) converges in distribution to a standard Poisson process.
Free probability analogs of the basics of extreme-value theory are obtained, based on Ando's spectral order. This includes classification of freely max-stable laws and their domains of attraction, using ``free extremal convolutions'' on the distributions. These laws coincide with the limit laws in the classical peaks-over-threshold approach. A free extremal projection-valued process over a measure-space is constructed, which is related to the free Poisson point process.
