I present a partly pedagogic discussion of the Gel'fand-Yaglom formula for the functional determinant of a one-dimensional, second order difference operator, in the simplest settings. The formula is a textbook one in discrete Sturm-Liouville theory and orthogonal polynomials. A two by two matrix approach is developed and applied to Robin boundary conditions. Euler-Rayleigh sums of eigenvalues are computed. A delta potential is introduced as a simple, non-trivial example and extended, in an appendix, to the general case. The continuum limit is considered in a non--rigorous way and a rough comparison with zeta regularised values is made. Vacuum energies are also considered in the free case. Chebyshev polynomials act as free propagators and their properties are developed using the two-matrix formulation, which has some advantages and appears to be novel. A trace formula, rather than a determinant one, is derived for the Gel'fand-Yaglom function.
The discrete Gel'fand--Yaglom theorem was studied several years ago. In the present paper, we generalize the discrete Gel'fand--Yaglom method to obtain the determinants of mass matrices which appear current works in particle physics, such as dimensional deconstruction and clockwork theory. Using the results, we show the expressions for vacuum energies in such various models.
The Gelfand-Yaglom formula relates functional determinants of the one-dimensional second order differential operators to the solutions of the corresponding initial value problem. In this work we generalise the Gelfand-Yaglom method by considering discrete and continuum partial second order differential operators in higher dimensions. To illustrate our main result we apply the generalised formula to the two-dimensional massive and massless discrete Laplace operators and calculate asymptotic expressions for their determinants.
The Gelfand-Yaglom formula relates the regularized determinant of a differential operator to the solution of an initial value problem. Here we develop a generalized Gelfand-Yaglom formula for a Hamiltonian system with Lagrangian boundary conditions in the discrete and continuous settings. Later we analyze the convergence of the discretized Hamilton-Jacobi operator and propose a lattice regularization for the determinant.
The principal series of unitary representations of the Lorentz group has been considered in the helicity basis. Decompositions of tensor products of the spinspaces are studied in the framework of projective representations of the symmetric group. Higher-spin Gel'fand-Yaglom equations are defined in the helicity basis over an arbitrary representation space. Applications of decomposable and indecomposable Gel'fand-Yaglom equations to particle physics are discussed.
It is shown that the Gel'fand-Tsetlin realization of irreducible representations of the $A_n$ algebra is directly connected with a linear exactly integrable system in the n-dimensional space. General solution for this system is explicitly given.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study super Hom-Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras and Hom-Lie conformal superalgebras. In this paper, we provide different ways for constructing super Hom-Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras and obtain some infinite-dimensional Hom-Lie superalgebras from affinization of super Hom-Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras. Also, we give a general construction of Hom-Lie conformal superalgebras from Hom-Lie superalgebras and establish equivalence of quadratic Hom-Lie conformal superalgebras and super Hom-Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras. Finally, we characterize one-dimensional cent…
The aim of this paper is to introduce the notions of Hom Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebra and Hom-Lie conformal algebra. In this paper, we give four constructions of Hom Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras. Also, we provide a general construction of Hom-Lie conformal algebras from Hom-Lie algebras. Finally, we prove that a Hom Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebra is equivalent to a Hom-Lie conformal algebra of degree 2.
Comparison of numerical performances of two methods for coefficient inverse problems is described. The first one is the classical Gel'fand-Levitan-Krein equation method, and the second one is the recently developed approximately globally convergent numerical method. This comparison is performed for both computationally simulated and experimental data.
We prove new global stability estimates for the Gel'fand-Calderon inverse problem in 3D. For sufficiently regular potentials this result of the present work is a principal improvement of the result of [G. Alessandrini, Stable determination of conductivity by boundary measurements, Appl. Anal. 27 (1988), 153-172].
A new, so called odd Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is introduced for the irreducible covariant tensor representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(n|n). The related Gel'fand-Zetlin patterns are based upon the decomposition according to a particular chain of subalgebras of gl(n|n). This chain contains only genuine Lie superalgebras of type gl(k|l) with k and l nonzero (apart from the final element of the chain which is gl(1|0)=gl(1)). Explicit expressions for a set of generators of the algebra on this Gel'fand-Zetlin basis are determined. The results are extended to an explicit construction of a class of…
We prove a global logarithmic stability estimate for the multi-channel Gel'fand-Calderón inverse problem on a two-dimensional bounded domain, i.e. the inverse boundary value problem for the equation $-Δψ+ v\, ψ= 0$ on $D$, where $v$ is a smooth matrix-valued potential defined on a bounded planar domain $D$.
By developing the d-bar approach to global "inverse scattering" at zero energy we give a principal effectivization of the global reconstruction method for the Gel'fand-Calderon inverse boundary value problem in three dimensions. This work goes back to results published by the author in 1987, 1988 and proceeds from recent progress in the d-bar approach to inverse scattering in 3D published by the author in 2005, 2006.
The problem of construction of irreducible representations of quantum $A^q_n$ algebras is solved at the level of explicit integration of the linear (inhomogeneous) system in finite differences in the n-dimensional space. The general solution of this system is given explicitly and particular ones, which correspond to the irreducible representations are selected.
A Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is introduced for the irreducible covariant tensor representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n). Explicit expressions for the generators of the Lie superalgebra acting on this basis are determined. Furthermore, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients corresponding to the tensor product of any covariant tensor representation of gl(m|n) with the natural representation V ([1,0,...,0]) of gl(m|n) with highest weight (1,0,. . . ,0) are computed. Both results are steps for the explicit construction of the parastatistics Fock space.
We give effectivized Holder-logarithmic energy and regularity dependent stability estimates for the Gel'fand inverse boundary value problem in dimension $d=3$. This effectivization includes explicit dependance of the estimates on coefficient norms and related parameters. Our new estimates are given in $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ norms for the coefficient difference and related stability efficiently increases with increasing energy and/or coefficient difference regularity. Comparisons with preceeding results are given.
In this paper we present the generating function method for the derivation of bosons polynomials of Gel'fand basis and Wigner coefficients for the canonical basis of SU(n). We find a new analytic polynomial basis of SU(4) with the exact number of summations, five only. We find also a new algebraic expression of Wigner coefficient with multiplicity for the canonical basis and the isoscalors factors of SU (3) with only. three summations.
We introduce integrable multicomponent non-commutative lattice systems, which can be considered as analogs of the modified Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy. We present the corresponding systems of Lax pairs and we show directly multidimensional consistency of these Gel'fand-Dikii type equations. We demonstrate how the systems can be obtained as periodic reductions of the non-commutative lattice Kadomtsev-Petviashvilii hierarchy. The geometric description of the hierarchy in terms of Desargues maps helps to derive non-isospectral generalization of the non-commutative lattice modified Gel'fand-Dikii sys…
We study the multi-channel Gel'fand-Calderón inverse problem in two dimensions, i.e. the inverse boundary value problem for the equation $-Δψ+ v(x) ψ= 0$, $x\in D$, where $v$ is a smooth matrix-valued potential defined on a bounded planar domain $D$. We give an exact global reconstruction method for finding $v$ from the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. This also yields a global uniqueness results: if two smooth matrix-valued potentials defined on a bounded planar domain have the same Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator then they coincide.
In this paper, we develop a new geometric characterization for the supersymmetric versions of the Fokas--Gel'fand formula for the immersion of soliton supermanifolds with two bosonic and two fermionic independent variables into Lie superalgebras. In order to do so, from a linear spectral problem of a supersymmetric integrable system using the covariant fermionic derivative, we provide a technique to obtain two additional linear spectral problems for that integrable system, one using the bosonic variable derivatives and the other using the fermionic variable derivatives. This allows us to inves…
We briefly review a matrix based method to compute the Casimir operators of Lie algebras, mainly certain type of contractions of simple Lie algebras. The versatility of the method is illustrated by constructing matrices whose characteristic polynomials provide the invariants of the kinematical algebras in (3+1)-dimensions. Moreover it is shown, also for kinematical algebras, how some reductions on these matrices are useful for determining the missing operators in the missing label problem (MLP).
In this paper we will discuss some features of the bihamiltonian method for solving the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equations by Separation of Variables, and make contact with the theory of Algebraic Complete Integrability and, specifically, with the Veselov--Novikov notion of algebro-geometric (AG) Poisson brackets. The "bihamiltonian" method for separating the Hamilton-Jacobi equations is based on the notion of pencil of Poisson brackets and on the Gel'fand-Zakharevich (GZ) approach to integrable systems. We will herewith show how, quite naturally, GZ systems may give rise to AG Poisson brackets, …
In this paper, we construct and investigate two supersymmetric versions of the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for the immersion of 2D surfaces associated with a supersymmetric integrable system. The first version involves an infinitesimal deformation of the zero-curvature condition and the linear spectral problem associated with this system. This deformation leads the surfaces to be represented in terms of a bosonic supermatrix immersed in a Lie superalgebra. The second supersymmetric version is obtained by using a fermionic parameter deformation to construct surfaces expressed in terms of a fermionic…
The paper deals with the one-dimensional parabolic potential barrier $V(x)={V_0-mγ^2 x^2/2}$, as a model of an unstable system in quantum mechanics. The time-independent Schrödinger equation for this model is set up as the eigenvalue problem in Gel'fand triplet and its exact solutions are expressed by generalized eigenfunctions belonging to complex energy eigenvalues ${V_0\mp i\Gammav_n}$ whose imaginary parts are quantized as ${\Gammav_n=(n+1/2)\hslashγ}$. Under the assumption that time factors of an unstable system are square integrable, we provide a probabilistic interpretation of them. Thi…
An explicit construction of all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(1|n) in a Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is given. Particular attention is paid to the so-called star type I representations (``unitary representations''), and to a simple class of representations V(p), with p any positive integer. Then, the notion of Wigner Quantum Oscillators (WQOs) is recalled. In these quantum oscillator models, the unitary representations of gl(1|DN) are physical state spaces of the N-particle D-dimensional oscillator. So far, physical properties of gl(1|DN) WQOs were describe…
Let $X$ be a smooth bordered surface in $\real^3$ with smooth boundary and $\hat σ$ a smooth anisotropic conductivity on $X$. If the genus of $X$ is given, then starting from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $Λ_{\hat σ}$ on $\partial X$, we give an explicit procedure to find a unique Riemann surface $Y$ (up to a biholomorphism), an isotropic conductivity $σ$ on $Y$ and the boundary values of a quasiconformal diffeomorphism $F: X \to Y$ which transforms $\hat σ$ into $σ$. As a corollary we obtain the following uniqueness result: if $σ_1, σ_2$ are two smooth anisotropic conductivities on $X$ wi…
The character of the principal series of representations of SL(n,R) is evaluated by using Gel'fand and Naimark's definition of character. This representation is realized in the space of functions defined on the right coset space of SL(n,R) with respect to the subgroup of real triangular matrices. This form of the representations considerably simplifies the problem of determination of the integral kernel of the group ring which is fundamental in the Gel'fand-Naimark theory of character. An important feature of the principal series of representations is that the `elliptic' elements of SL(n,R) do…
We derive simple new expressions, in various dimensions, for the functional determinant of a radially separable partial differential operator, thereby generalizing the one-dimensional result of Gel'fand and Yaglom to higher dimensions. We use the zeta function formalism, and the results agree with what one would obtain using the angular momentum cutoff method based on radial WKB. The final expression is numerically equal to an alternative expression derived in a Feynman diagrammatic approach, but is considerably simpler.
A quadratic Lie conformal algebra corresponds to a Hamiltonian pair in \cite{GD}, which plays fundamental roles in completely integrable systems. Moreover, it also corresponds to certain compatible pairs of a Lie algebra and a Novikov algebra which was called Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebra by Xu in \cite{X1}. In this paper, central extensions and conformal derivations of quadratic Lie conformal algebras are studied in terms of Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras. It is shown that central extensions and conformal derivations of a quadratic Lie conformal algebra are related with some bilinear forms and some…
In this paper, we discuss some specific features of symmetries of integrable systems which can be used to contruct the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for the immersion of 2D-soliton surfaces, associated with such systems, in Lie algebras. We establish the sufficient condition for the applicability of this formula. This condition requires the existence of two vector fields which generate a common symmetry of the initial system and its corresponding linear spectral problem. This means that these two fields have to be group-related and we determine an explicit form of this relation. It provides a criteri…
In a Wigner quantum mechanical model, with a solution in terms of the Lie superalgebra gl(1|n), one is faced with determining the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for an arbitrary self-adjoint odd element of gl(1|n) in any unitary irreducible representation W. We show that the eigenvalue problem can be solved by the decomposition of W with respect to the branching gl(1|n) --> gl(1|1) + gl(n-1). The eigenvector problem is much harder, since the Gel'fand-Zetlin basis of W is involved, and the explicit actions of gl(1|n) generators on this basis are fairly complicated. Using properties of the Gel'fan…
A general technique is developed for calculating functional determinants of second-order differential operators with Dirichlet, periodic, and antiperiodic boundary conditions. As an example, we give simple formulas for a harmonic oscillator with an arbitrary time-dependent frequency. Here our result is a generalization of Gel'fand-Yaglom's famous formula which was restricted to Dirichlet boundary conditions. Apart from the generalization, our derivation is more transparent than theirs, the determinants requiring only knowledge of the classical trajectories. Special properties of operators with…
