A general technique is developed for calculating functional determinants of second-order differential operators with Dirichlet, periodic, and antiperiodic boundary conditions. As an example, we give simple formulas for a harmonic oscillator with an arbitrary time-dependent frequency. Here our result is a generalization of Gel'fand-Yaglom's famous formula which was restricted to Dirichlet boundary conditions. Apart from the generalization, our derivation is more transparent than theirs, the determinants requiring only knowledge of the classical trajectories. Special properties of operators with a zero mode are exhibited. Our technique does not require the calculation of the spectrum and is as simple as Wronski's method for Green functions.
Using the discrete Hirota integrability we find the general solution of the full quantum Y-system for the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of operators in the planar AdS5/CFT4 correspondence in terms of Wronskian-like determinants parameterized by a finite number of Baxter's Q-functions. We consider it as a useful step towards the construction of a finite system of non-linear integral equations (FiNLIE) for the full spectrum. The explicit asymptotic form of all the Q-functions for the large size operators is presented. We establish the symmetries and the analyticity properties of the asymptoti…
Using the determinant representation of gauge transformation operator, we have shown that the general form of $τ$ function of the $q$-KP hierarchy is a q-deformed generalized Wronskian, which includes the q-deformed Wronskian as a special case. On the basis of these, we study the q-deformed constrained KP ($q$-cKP) hierarchy, i.e. $l$-constraints of $q$-KP hierarchy. Similar to the ordinary constrained KP (cKP) hierarchy, a large class of solutions of $q$-cKP hierarchy can be represented by q-deformed Wronskian determinant of functions satisfying a set of linear $q$-partial differential equati…
We consider Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated with (not necessarily self-adjoint) Schrodinger operators describing nonlocal interactions in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$, $n\geq 2$, where $Ω$ is an open set with a compact, nonempty boundary satisfying certain regularity conditions. As an application we describe a reduction of a certain ratio of Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ to Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(\partialΩ; d^{n-1}σ)$. This leads to an extension of a variant of a celebrated formula due to Jost and Pais, whi…
We consider Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated with (not necessarily self-adjoint) Schrodinger operators in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$, $n=2,3$, where $Ω$ is an open set with a compact, nonempty boundary satisfying certain regularity conditions. As an application we describe a reduction of a certain ratio of modified Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ to modified Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(\partialΩ; d^{n-1}σ)$, $n=2,3$. This leads to a two- and three-dimensional extension of a variant of a celebrated formula due to …
We derive semiclassical approximations for wavefunctions, Green's functions and expectation values for classically chaotic quantum systems. Our method consists of applying singular and regular perturbations to quantum Hamiltonians. The wavefunctions, Green's functions and expectation values of the unperturbed Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of the spectral determinant of the perturbed Hamiltonian. Semiclassical resummation methods for spectral determinants are applied and yield approximations in terms of a finite number of classical trajectories. The final formulas have a simple form. In co…
We study the scattering problem for the Schrödinger equation on the half-line with Robin boundary condition at the origin. We derive an expression for the trace of the difference of the perturbed and unperturbed resolvent in terms of a Wronskian. This leads to a representation for the perturbation determinant and to trace identities of Buslaev-Faddeev type.
We consider the Schrödinger operator on a star shaped graph with $n$ edges joined at a single vertex. We derive an expression for the trace of the difference of the perturbed and unperturbed resolvent in terms of a Wronskian. This leads to representations for the perturbation determinant and the spectral shift function, and to an analog of Levinson's formula.
We explore the extent to which a variant of a celebrated formula due to Jost and Pais, which reduces the Fredholm perturbation determinant associated with the Schrödinger operator on a half-line to a simple Wronski determinant of appropriate distributional solutions of the underlying Schrödinger equation, generalizes to higher dimensions. In this multi-dimensional extension the half-line is replaced by an open set $Ω\subset\bbR^n$, $n\in\bbN$, $n\geq 2$, where $Ω$ has a compact, nonempty boundary $\partialΩ$ satisfying certain regularity conditions. Our variant involves ratios of perturbation …
A construction of the heat kernel diagonal is considered as element of generalized Zeta function, that, being meromorfic function, its gradient at the origin defines determinant of a differential operator in a technique for regularizing quadratic path integral. Some classes of explicit expression in the case of finite-gap potential coefficient of the heat equation are constructed.
In this letter we re-visit the X-ray problem. Assuming point interaction between the conduction electrons and the first instantaneously created core-hole, the latter's Green's function can be represented as a Fredholm determinant of certain Wiener-Hopf operators acting on L^2(0,T) with discontinuous symbols. Here the symbols are the local conduction electron Green's function in the frequency domain and T is the time the core-hole spends in the system before removal. In this situation, the classical theory of singular integral equations usually employed in the literature to compute the large T …
We consider a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions interacting through $δ$-function repulsive potential of an arbitrary strength. For the case of all fermions but one having spin up, we calculate time-dependent two-point correlation function of the spin-down fermion. This impurity Green's function is represented in the thermodynamic limit as an integral of Fredholm determinants of integrable linear integral operators.
We revisit the computation of (2-modified) Fredholm determinants for operators with matrix-valued semi-separable integral kernels. The latter occur, for instance, in the form of Green's functions associated with closed ordinary differential operators on arbitrary intervals on the real line. Our approach determines the (2-modified) Fredholm determinants in terms of solutions of closely associated Volterra integral equations, and as a result offers a natural way to compute such determinants. We illustrate our approach by identifying classical objects such as the Jost function for half-line Schrö…
We summarize results on the asymptotics of the two-particle Green functions of interacting electrons in one dimension. Below a critical value of the chemical potential the Fermi surface vanishes, and the system can no longer be described as a Luttinger liquid. Instead, the non-relativistic Fermi gas with infinite point-like repulsion becomes the universal model for the long-wavelength, low temperature physics of the one-dimensional electrons. This model, which we call the impenetrable electron gas, allows for a rigorous mathematical treatment. In particular, a so-called determinant representat…
We study correlation functions of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in discrete time with backward sequential update. We prove a determinantal formula for the generalized Green function which describes transitions between positions of particles at different individual time moments. In particular, the generalized Green function defines a probability measure at staircase lines on the space-time plane. The marginals of this measure are the TASEP correlation functions in the space-time region not covered by the standard Green function approach. As an example, we calculate the…
In a previous work [Andrade \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rep. \textbf{647}, 1 (2016)], it was shown that the exact Green's function (GF) for an arbitrarily large (although finite) quantum graph is given as a sum over scattering paths, where local quantum effects are taken into account through the reflection and transmission scattering amplitudes. To deal with general graphs, two simplifying procedures were developed: regrouping of paths into families of paths and the separation of a large graph into subgraphs. However, for less symmetrical graphs with complicated topologies as, for instance, random …
Applications of the Hückel (tight binding) model are ubiquitous in quantum chemistry and solid state physics. The matrix representation of this model is isomorphic to an unoriented vertex adjacency matrix of a bipartite graph, which is also the Laplacian matrix plus twice the identity. In this paper, we analytically calculate the determinant and, when it exists, the inverse of this matrix in connection with the Green's function, $\mathbf{G}$, of the $N\times N$ Hückel matrix. A corollary is a closed form expression for a Harmonic sum (Eq. 12). We then extend the results to $d-$dimensional latt…
Building on an insight due to Avramidi, we provide a system of transport equations for determining key fundamental bi-tensors, including derivatives of the world-function, σ(x,x'), the square root of the Van Vleck determinant, Δ^{1/2}(x,x'), and the tail-term, V(x,x'), appearing in the Hadamard form of the Green function. These bi-tensors are central to a broad range of problems from radiation reaction to quantum field theory in curved spacetime and quantum gravity. Their transport equations may be used either in a semi-recursive approach to determining their covariant Taylor series expansions…
