We consider semilinear wave equations with small initial data in two space dimensions. For a class of wave equations with cubic nonlinearity, we show the global existence of small amplitude solutions, and give an asymptotic description of the solution as $t \to \infty$ uniformly in $x \in {\mathbb R}^2$. In particular, our result implies the decay of the energy when the nonlinearity is dissipative.
In this article we prove optimal pointwise bounds for solutions to the semilinear wave equation with integer powers $p\geq 3$ on Kerr backgrounds with small angular momentum and small initial data.
This article gives an energy decay result for small data solutions to a class of semilinear wave equations in two space dimensions possessing weakly dissipative structure relevant to the Agemi condition.
We generalize the pointwise decay estimates for large data solutions of the defocusing semilinear wave equations which we obtained earlier under restriction to spherical symmetry. Without the symmetry the conformal transformation we use provides only a weak decay. This can, however, in the next step be improved to the optimal decay estimate suggested by the radial case and small data results. This is the first result of that kind.
This paper is concerned with decay estimate of solutions to the semilinear wave equation with strong damping in a bounded domain. Introducing an appropriate Lyaponuv function, we prove that when the damping is linear, we can find initial data, for which the solution decays exponentially. This result improves an early one in an article of Gazzola and Squassina.
We will present some rigidity results for solutions to semilinear elliptic equations of the form $\Deltau = W'(u)$, where W is a quite general potential with a local minimum and a local maximum. We are particularly interested in Liouvlle-type theorems and symmetry results, which generalise some known facts about the Cahn-Hilliard equation.
In this paper we study a class of semilinear wave type equations with viscoelastic damping and delay feedback with time variable coefficient. By combining semigroup arguments, careful energy estimates and an iterative approach we are able to prove, under suitable assumptions, a well-posedness result and an exponential decay estimate for solutions corresponding to small initial data. This extends and concludes the analysis initiated in [16] and then developed in [13, 17].
In connection with the weak null condition, Alinhac introduced a sufficient condition for global existence of small amplitude solutions to systems of semilinear wave equations in three space dimensions. We introduce a slightly weaker sufficient condition for the small data global existence, and we investigate the asymptotic pointwise behavior of global solutions for systems satisfying this condition. As an application, the asymptotic behavior of global solutions under the Alinhac condition is also derived.
The asymptotic behavior of some semilinear parabolic PDEs is analyzed by means of a "mean value" property. This property allows us to determine, by means of appropriate {\em{a priori}} estimates, some exponential decay results for suitable global solutions. We also apply the method to investigate a well-known finite time blow-up result. An application is given to a one-dimensional semilinear parabolic PDE with boundary degeneracy. Our results shed further light onto the problem of determining initial data for which the corresponding solution is guaranteed to exponentially decay to zero or blow…
We consider the semilinear damped wave equation $\partial_{tt}^2 u(x,t)+γ(x)\partial_t u(x,t)=Δu(x,t)-αu(x,t)-f(x,u(x,t))$. In this article, we obtain the first results concerning the stabilization of this semilinear equation in cases where $γ$ does not satisfy the geometric control condition. When some of the geodesic rays are trapped, the stabilization of the linear semigroup is semi-uniform in the sense that $\|e^{At}A^{-1}\|\leq h(t)$ for some function $h$ with $h(t)\rightarrow 0$ when $t\rightarrow +\infty$. We provide general tools to deal with the semilinear stabilization problem in the…
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions for the semilinear damped wave equation with variable coefficients. We prove that if the damping is effective, and the nonlinearity and other lower order terms can be regarded as perturbations, then the solution is approximated by the scaled Gaussian of the corresponding linear parabolic problem. The proof is based on the scaling variables and energy estimates.
In this work, we investigate the problem of finite time blow up as well as the upper bound estimates of lifespan for solutions to small-amplitude semilinear wave equations with mixed nonlinearities $a |u_t|^p+b |u|^q$, posed on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, which is related to both the Strauss conjecture and Glassey conjecture. In some cases, we obtain existence results, where the lower bound of the lifespan agrees with the upper bound in order. In addition, our results apply for semilinear damped wave equations, when the coefficient of the dissipation term is integrable (without sign co…
A semilinear singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered in a convex unbounded sector. The singular perturbation parameter is arbitrarily small, and the "reduced equation" may have multiple solutions. A formal asymptotic expansion for a possible solution is constructed that involves boundary and corner layer functions. For this asymptotic expansion, we establish certain inequalities that are used in a subsequent paper to construct sharp sub- and super-solutions and then establish the existence of a solution to a similar nonlinear elliptic p…
We consider the Cauchy problem for systems of semilinear wave equations in two space dimensions. We present a structural condition on the nonlinearity under which the energy decreases to zero as time tends to infinity if the Cauchy data are sufficiently small, smooth and compactly-supported.
We investigate the decay for $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ of weak Sobolev type solutions of semilinear nonlocal equations $Pu=F(u)$. We consider the case when $P=p(D)$ is an elliptic Fourier multiplier with polyhomogeneous symbol $p(ξ)$ and derive sharp algebraic decay estimates in terms of weighted Sobolev norms. In particular, we state a precise relation between the singularity of the symbol at the origin and the rate of decay of the corresponding solutions. Our basic example is the celebrated Benjamin-Ono equation {equation} \label{BO}(|D|+c)u=u^2, \qquad c>0,{equation} for internal solitary wav…
In this paper we study a semilinear wave equation with nonlinear, time-dependent damping in one space dimension. For this problem, we prove a well-posedness result in $W^{1,\infty}$ in the space-time domain $(0,1)\times [0,+\infty)$. Then we address the problem of the time-asymptotic stability of the zero solution and show that, under appropriate conditions, the solution decays to zero at an exponential rate in the space $W^{1,\infty}$. The proofs are based on the analysis of the corresponding semilinear system for the first order derivatives, for which we show a contractive property of the in…
We consider a general hyperbolic model of chemotaxis in the multidimensional case. For this system we show the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem and we determine their asymptotic behavior. Since this model does not enter in the classical framework of dissipative problems, we analyze it combining the features of the hyperbolic and the parabolic parts and using detailed decay estimates of the Green function.
In this paper we consider a multi-dimensional wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions, related to the Kelvin-Voigt damping. Global existence and asymptotic stability of solutions starting in a stable set are proved. Blow up for solutions of the problem with linear dynamic boundary conditions with initial data in the unstable set is also obtained.
We prove existence results of two solutions of the problem \[ \begin{cases} L(u)+u^{m-1}=λu^{p-1} & \text{ in $Ω$}, \\ \quad u>0 &\text{ in $Ω$}, \\ \quad u=0 & \text{ on $\partial Ω$}, \end{cases} \] where $L(v)=-{\rm div}(M(x)\nabla v)$ is a linear operator, $p\in (2,2^{*}]$ and $λ$ and $ m$ sufficiently large. Then their asymptotical limit as $m\to +\infty$ is investigated showing different behaviors.
In this paper, we analyze a semilinear damped second order evolution equation with time-dependent time delay and time-dependent delay feedback coefficient. The nonlinear term satisfies a local Lipschitz continuity assumption. Under appropriate conditions, we prove well-posedness and exponential stability of our model for small initial data. Our arguments combine a Lyapunov functional approach with some continuity arguments. Moreover, as an application of our abstract results, the damped wave equation with a source term and delay feedback is analyzed.
In the present paper, we are concerned with the semilinear viscoelastic wave equation subject to a locally distributed dissipative effect of Kelvin-Voigt type, posed on a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We begin with an auxiliary problem and we show that its solution decays exponentially in the weak phase space. The method of proof combines an observability inequality and unique continuation properties. Then, passing to the limit, we recover the original model and prove its global existence as well as the exponential stability.
This paper is devoted to the study of asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the one-dimensional defocusing semilinear wave equation. We prove that finite energy solution tends to zero in the pointwise sense, hence improving the averaged decay of Lindblad and Tao. Moreover, for sufficiently localized data belonging to some weighted energy space, the solution decays in time with an inverse polynomial rate. This confirms a conjecture raised in the mentioned work. The results are based on new weighted vector fields as multipliers applied to regions enclosed by light rays. The key observation for th…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior, as t goes to infinity, for a semilinear hyperbolic equation with asymptotically smal dissipation and convex potential. We prove that if the damping term behaves like K/t^αfor t large enough, k>0 and 0</alpha<1 then every global solution converges weakly to an equilibrium point. This result is a positive answer to a question left open in the paper [A. Cabot and P. Frankel, Asymptotics for some semilinear hyperbolic equation with non-autonomous damping. J. Differential Equations 252 (2012) 294-322.]
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior as $x_1\to+\infty$ of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in quarter- or half-spaces, for which the value at $x_1=0$ is given. We prove the uniqueness and characterize the one-dimensional or constant profile of the solutions at infinity. To do so, we use two different approaches. The first one is a pure PDE approach and it is based on the maximum principle, the sliding method and some new Liouville type results for elliptic equations in the half-space or in the whole space~$\mathbb{R}^N$. The second one is based on the theory of dynamical …
This paper is concerned with the initial value problem for semilinear wave equation with structural damping $u_{tt}+(-Δ)^σu_t -Δu =f(u)$, where $σ\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ and $f(u) \sim |u|^p$ or $u |u|^{p-1}$ with $p> 1 + {2}/(n - 2 σ)$. We first show the global existence for initial data small in some weighted Sobolev spaces on $\mathcal R^n$ ($n \ge 2$). Next, we show that the asymptotic profile of the solution above is given by a constant multiple of the fundamental solution of the corresponding parabolic equation, provided the initial data belong to weighted $L^1$ spaces.
We consider a parabolic equation of the form u_t=Δu +f(u)+h(x,t) in R^N\times (0,\infty), where f in C^1(R) is such that f(0)=0 and f'(0)<0 and h is a suitable function on R^N\times (0,\infty). We show that under certain conditions, each globally defined and nonnegative bounded solution u converges to a single steady state.
A monotonicity approach to the study of the asymptotic behavior near corners of solutions to semilinear elliptic equations in domains with a conical boundary point is discussed. The presence of logarithms in the first term of the asymptotic expansion is excluded for boundary profiles sufficiently close to straight conical surfaces.
Steady vortices for the three-dimensional Euler equation for inviscid incompressible flows and for the shallow water equation are constructed and showed to tend asymptotically to singular vortex filaments. The construction is based on the asymptotic study of solutions to a semilinear elliptic problem.
We consider an abstract first order evolution equation in a Hilbert space in which the linear part is represented by a self-adjoint nonnegative operator A with discrete spectrum, and the nonlinear term has order greater than one at the origin. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions. We prove that two different regimes coexist. Close to the kernel of A the dynamic is governed by the nonlinear term, and solutions (when they decay to 0) decay as negative powers of t. Close to the range of A, the nonlinear term is negligible, and solutions behave as solutions of the linearized problem…
We establish a lower bound for the number of sign changing solutions with precisely two nodal domains to the singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic equation -ε^{2}Δ_{g}u+u=|u|^{p-2}u on an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold M, p in (2,2n/(n-2)), in terms of the cup-length of the configuration space of M. We give a precise description of the asymptotic profile of these solutions as ε goes to 0. We also provide new estimates for the cup-length of the configuration space of M.
We prove almost global existence for semilinear wave equations outside of nontrapping obstacles. We use the vector field method, but only use the generators of translations and Euclidean rotations. Our method exploits 1/r decay of wave equations, as opposed to the much harder to prove 1/t decay.
In this paper we prove some symmetry results for entire solutions to the semilinear equation $-Δu=f(u)$, with $f$ nonincreasing in a right neighbourhood of the origin. We consider solutions decaying only in some directions and we give some sufficient conditions for them to be radially symmetric with respect to those variables, such as periodicity or the pointwise decay of some derivatives.
Consider the problem \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu &=& v^{\frac 2{N-2}},\quad v>0\quad {in}\quad Ω, -Δv &=& u^{p},\:\:\:\quad u>0\quad {in}\quad Ω, u&=&v\:\:=\:\:0 \quad {on}\quad \partial Ω, \end{eqnarray*} where $Ω$ is a bounded convex domain in $\R^N,$ $N>2,$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω.$ We study the asymptotic behaviour of the least energy solutions of this system as $p\to \infty.$ We show that the solution remain bounded for $p$ large and have one or two peaks away form the boundary. When one peak occurs we characterize its location.
We consider a functional semilinear Rayleigh-Stokes equation involving fractional derivative. Our aim is to analyze some circumstances, in those the global solvability and some results on asymptotic behavior of solutions take place. By establishing a new Halanay type inequality, we show the dissipativity and asymptotic stability of solutions to our problem. In addition, we prove the existence of a compact set of decay solutions by using local estimates and fixed point arguments.
We consider the equation $-Δu= |x|^α|u|^{p-1}u$ for any $α\geq 0$, either in $\mathbb R^2$ or in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^2$ centered at the origin with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We give a sharp description of the asymptotic behavior as $p\rightarrow +\infty$ of all the radial solutions to these problems. In particular, we show that there is no uniform a priori bound (in $p$) for nodal solutions under Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. This contrasts with the recently shown fact that positive solutions have uniform a priori bounds for $α=0$ and Dirichlet boundary …
In this paper we study the initial boundary value problem for two-dimensional semilinear wave equations with small data, in asymptotically Euclidean exterior domains. We prove that if $1<p\le p_c(2)$, the problem admits almost the same upper bound of the lifespan as that of the corresponding Cauchy problem, only with a small loss for $1<p\le 2$. It is interesting to see that the logarithmic increase of the harmonic function in $2$-D has no influence to the estimate of the upper bound of the lifespan for $2<p\le p_c(2)$. One of the novelties is that we can deal with the problem with flat metric…
We establish quantitative asymptotic behaviors for nonnegative solutions of the critical semilinear equation $-Δu=u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ with isolated boundary singularities, where $n\ge 3$ is the dimension.
We will investigate the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the elliptic equation Δu+|x|^{l_{1}}u^{p}+|x|^{l_{2}}u^{q}=0 {in} R^{n}. We establish that for $n\geq 3$ and $q>p>1$, any positive radial solution of (0.1) has the following property: $\lim_{r\to\infty}r^{\frac{2+l_{1}}{p-1}}u$ and $\lim_{r\to0}r^{\frac{2+l_{2}}{q-1}}u$ always exist if $\frac{n+l_{1}}{n-2}<p<q, p\neq\frac{n+2+2l_{1}}{n-2}, q \neq\frac{n+2+2l_{2}}{n-2}.$ In addition, we prove that the singular solution of (0.1) is unique under a certain condition
The aim of this paper is to prove a blow up result of the solution for a semilinear scale invariant damped wave equation under a suitable decay condition on radial initial data. The admissible range for the power of the nonlinear term depends both on the damping coefficient and on the pointwise decay order of the initial data. In addition we give an upper bound estimate for the lifespan of the solution, in terms of the power of the nonlinearity, size and growth of initial data.
This paper is concerned with the structure of the solutions to subcritical elliptic equations related to the Matukuma equation. In certain cases the complete structure of the solution set is known, and is comparable to that of the original Matukuma equation. Here we derive sufficient conditions for a more complicated solution set consisting of; (i) crossing solutions for small initial conditions and large initial conditions; (ii) at least one open interval of slowly decaying solutions; and (iii) at least two rapidly decaying solutions. As a consequence we obtain multiplicity results for rapidl…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to an elliptic equation near the singularity of an inverse square potential with a coefficient related to the best constant for the Hardy inequality. Due to the presence of a borderline Hardy potential, a proper variational setting has to be introduced in order to provide a weak formulation of the equation. An Almgren-type monotonicity formula is used to determine the exact asymptotic behavior of solutions.
We establish asymptotic gain along with input-to-state practical stability results for disturbed semilinear systems w.r.t. the global attractor of the respective undisturbed system. We apply our results to a large class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations comprising disturbed Chaffee--Infante equations, for example.
In this paper, we give positive answer to the open question raised in [E. Zuazua, Exponential decay for the semilinear wave equation with localized damping in unbounded domains. J. Math. Pures Appl., 70 (1991) 513--529] on the exponential decay of solutions for the semilinear plate equation with localized damping.
In this paper we give a unified proof to the soliton resolution conjecture along a sequence of times, for the semilinear focusing energy critical wave equations in the radial case and two dimensional equivariant wave map equations, including the four dimensional radial Yang Mills equation, without using outer energy type inequalities. Such inequalities have played a crucial role in previous works with similar results. Roughly speaking, we prove that along a sequence of times approaching the maximal time of existence, the solution decouples to a sum of rescaled solitons and a term vanishing in …
In this paper we establish the sharp asymptotic decay of positive solutions of the Yamabe type equation $\frlap u=u^{\frac{Q+2s}{Q-2s}}$ in a homogeneous Lie group, where $\frlap$ represents a suitable pseudodifferential operator modelled on a class of nonlocal operators arising in conformal CR geometry.
We prove small data global existence for a class of semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition on extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole backgrounds with nonlinear terms that degenerate at the event horizon. We impose no symmetry assumptions. The study of such equations is motivated by their covariance properties under the Couch-Torrence conformal isometry. We show decay, non-decay and asymptotic blow-up results analogous to those in the linear case.
We study the long time existence of solutions to nonlinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearity (of order $p$) and small data, on a large class of $(1+n)$-dimensional nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds, which include the Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole space-times. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy estimates hold forward in time, we give lower bounds of the lifespan when $n=3, 4$ and $p$ is not bigger than the critical one. The lower bounds for three dimensional subcritical and four dimensional critical cases are sharp in genera…
We are concerned with the properties of weak solutions of the stationary Schrödinger equation $-Δu + Vu = f(u)$, $u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$, where $V$ is Hölder continuous and $\inf V>0$. Assuming $f$ to be continuous and bounded near $0$ by a power function with exponent larger than $1$ we provide precise decay estimates at infinity for solutions in terms of Green's function of the Schrödinger operator. In some cases this improves known theorems on the decay of solutions. If $f$ is also real analytic on $(0,\infty)$ we obtain that the set of positive solutions is loca…
We consider dynamics of scalar semilinear parabolic equations on bounded intervals with periodic boundary conditions, and on the entire real line, with a general nonlinearity $g(t,x,u,u_x)$ either not depending on $t$, or periodic in $t$. While the topological and geometric structure of their attractors has been investigated in depth, we focus here on ergodic-theoretical properties. The main result is that the union of supports of all the invariant measures projects one-to-one to $\mathbb{R}^2$. We rely on a novel application of the zero-number techniques with respect to evolution of measures …
