A semilinear singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered in a convex unbounded sector. The singular perturbation parameter is arbitrarily small, and the "reduced equation" may have multiple solutions. A formal asymptotic expansion for a possible solution is constructed that involves boundary and corner layer functions. For this asymptotic expansion, we establish certain inequalities that are used in a subsequent paper to construct sharp sub- and super-solutions and then establish the existence of a solution to a similar nonlinear elliptic problem in a convex polygon.
In this paper we consider a multidimensional semilinear reaction-diffusion equation and we obtain at any arbitrary time an approximate controllability result between nonnegative states using as control term the reaction coefficient, that is via multiplicative controls.
Boundary characteristic point regularity is studied for a class of semilinear heat equations and an ODE criterion of regularity is obtained. Extensions to higher-order semilinear parabolic problems are discussed.
It is shown that self-similar blow-up for a fourth-order reaction-diffusion equation is incomplete in the sense that, in general, there exists a self-similar extension of solutions after blow-up. Other types of complete blow-up of non self-similar form are discussed.
Five types of blow-up patterns that can occur for the 4th-order semilinear parabolic equation of reaction-diffusion type $$ u_t= -Δ^2 u + |u|^{p-1} u \quad {in} \quad \ren \times (0,T), p>1, \quad \lim_{t \to T^-}\sup_{x \in \ren} |u(x,t)|= +\iy, $$ are discussed. For the semilinear heat equation $u_t= Δu+ u^p$, various blow-up patterns were under scrutiny since 1980s, while the case of higher-order diffusion was studied much less, regardless a wide range of its application.
In this manuscript we consider semilinear PDEs, with a convex nonlinearity, in a sector-like domain. Using cylindrical coordinates $(r, θ, z)$, we investigate the shape of solutions whose derivative in $θ$ vanishes at the boundary. We prove that any solution with Morse index less than two must be either independent of $θ$ or strictly monotone with respect to $θ$. In the special case of a planar domain, the result holds in a circular sector as well as in an annular, and it can also be extended to a rectangular domain. The corresponding problem in higher dimensions is also considered, as well as…
We study the large-time behavior of (weak) solutions to a two-scale reaction-diffusion system coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equations modeling the partly dissipative corrosion of concrete (/cement)-based materials with sulfates. We prove that as $t\to\infty$ the solution to the original two-scale system converges to the corresponding two-scale stationary system. To obtain the main result we make use essentially of the theory of evolution equations governed by subdifferential operators of time-dependent convex functions developed combined with a series of two-scale energy-like …
This paper treats the solvability of a semilinear reaction-diffusion system, which incorporates transport (diffusion) and reaction effects emerging from two separated spatial scales: $x$ - macro and $y$ - micro. The system's origin connects to the modeling of concrete corrosion in sewer concrete pipes. It consists of three partial differential equations which are mass-balances of concentrations, as well as, one ordinary differential equation tracking the damage-by-corrosion. The system is semilinear, partially dissipative, and coupled via the solid-water interface at the microstructure (pore) …
We discuss conditions for well-posedness of the scalar reaction-diffusion equation $u_{t}=Δu+f(u)$ equipped with Dirichlet boundary conditions where the initial data is unbounded. Standard growth conditions are juxtaposed with the no-blow-up condition $\int_{1}^{\infty}1/f(s) \d s=\infty$ that guarantees global solutions for the related ODE $\dot u=f(u)$. We investigate well-posedness of the toy PDE $u_{t}=f(u)$ in $L^{p}$ under this no-blow-up condition. An example is given of a source term $f$ and an initial condition $ψ\in L^{2}(0,1)$ such that $\int_{1}^{\infty}1/f(s)\d s=\infty$ and the t…
We study the global approximate controllability properties of a one dimensional semilinear reaction-diffusion equation governed via the coefficient of the reaction term. It is assumed that both the initial and target states admit no more than finitely many changes of sign. Our goal is to show that any target state $ u^*\in H_0^1 (0,1)$, with as many changes of sign in the same order as the given initial data $ u_0\in H^1_0(0,1)$, can be approximately reached in the $ L^2 (0,1)$-norm at some time $T>0$. Our method employs shifting the points of sign change by making use of a finite sequence of …
We consider the inverse problem of determining a general semilinear term appearing in nonlinear parabolic equations. For this purpose, we derive a new criterion that allows to prove global recovery of some general class of semilinear terms from lateral boundary measurements of solutions of the equation with initial condition fixed at zero. More precisely, we prove, for what seems to be the first time, the unique and stable recovery of general semilinear terms depending on time and space variables independently of the solution of the nonlinear equation from the knowledge of the parabolic Dirich…
The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of damped wave equations or reaction-diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmi…
We consider a semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function which is resonant with respect to any nonprincipal eigenvalue both at $\pm \infty$ and 0. Using a variant of the reduction method, we show that the problem has at least two nontrivial smooth solutions.
We study the existence and multiplicity of nonnegative solutions, as well as the behaviour of corresponding parameter-dependent branches, to the equation $-Δu = (1-u) u^m - λu^n$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ endowed with the zero Dirichlet boundary data, where $0<m \leq 1$ and $n>0$. When $λ> 0$, the obtained solutions can be seen as steady states of the corresponding reaction-diffusion equation describing a model of isothermal autocatalytic chemical reaction with termination. In addition to the main new results, we formulate a few relevant conjectures.
We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection equation arising from a biological model of migrating species. The qualitative properties of the globally attracting solution are studied and in some cases the limiting profile is determined. In particular, a conjecture of Cantrell, Cosner and Lou on concentration phenomena is resolved under mild conditions. Applications to a related parabolic competition system is also discussed.
In this work we study the behavior of a family of solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation, with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition, posed in a two-dimensional oscillating thin region with reaction terms concentrated in a neighborhood of the oscillatory boundary. Our main result is concerned with the upper and lower semicontinuity of the set of solutions. We show that the solutions of our perturbed equation can be approximated with ones of a one-dimensional equation, which also captures the effects of all relevant physical processes that take place in the original problem.
We prove the existence of ground state positive solutions for a class of semipositone $p$-Laplacian problems with a critical growth reaction term. The proofs are established by obtaining crucial uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates and by concentration compactness arguments. Our results are new even in the semilinear case $p = 2$.
We study the blow up solutions of a semilinear reaction diffusion system coupled in both equations and boundary conditions. The main purpose is to understand how the reaction terms and the absorption terms affect the blow-up properties. We derive the lower and upper bound for the blow-up rate, and find the blow-up set under certain assumptions.
The existence of two nontrivial smooth solutions to a semilinear Robin problem with indefinite unbounded potential and asymmetric nonlinearity $f$ is established. Both crossing and resonance are allowed. A third nonzero solution exists provided $f$ is $C^1$. Proofs exploit variational methods, truncation techniques, and Morse theory.
We consider the blow-up of solutions for a semilinear reaction diffusion equation with exponential reaction term. It is know that certain solutions that can be continued beyond the blow-up time possess a nonconstant selfsimilar blow-up profile. Our aim is to find the final time blow-up profile for such solutions. The proof is based on general ideas using semigroup estimates. The same approach works also for the power nonlinearity.
We consider semilinear Robin problems driven by the negative Laplacian plus an indefinite potential and with a superlinear reaction term which need not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. We prove existence and multiplicity theorems (producing also an infinity of smooth solutions) using variational tools, truncation and perturbation techniques and Morse theory (critical groups).
We establish asymptotic gain along with input-to-state practical stability results for disturbed semilinear systems w.r.t. the global attractor of the respective undisturbed system. We apply our results to a large class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations comprising disturbed Chaffee--Infante equations, for example.
Due to the seminal works of Hochbruck and Ostermann exponential splittings are well established numerical methods utilizing operator semigroup theory for the treatment of semilinear evolution equations whose principal linear part involves a sectorial operator with angle greater than $π/2$ (meaning essentially the holomorphy of the underlying semigroup). The present paper contributes to this subject by relaxing on the sectoriality condition, but in turn requiring that the semigroup operators act consistently on an interpolation couple (or on a scale of Banach spaces). Our conditions (on the sem…
We investigate the stability of time-periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic problems with Neumann boundary conditions. Such problems are posed on compact submanifolds evolving periodically in time. The discussion is based on the principal eigenvalue of periodic parabolic operators. The study is motivated by biological models on the effect of growth and curvature on patterns formation. The Ricci curvature plays an important role.
We investigate an inverse boundary value problem of determination of a nonlinear law for reaction-diffusion processes, which are modeled by general form semilinear parabolic equations. We do not assume that any solutions to these equations are known a priori, in which case the problem has a well known gauge symmetry. We determine, under additional assumptions, the semilinear term up to this symmetry in a time-dependent anisotropic case modeled on Riemannian manifolds, and for partial data measurements on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Moreover, we present cases where it is possible to exploit the nonlinear i…
We prove, for a wide class of semilinear elliptic differential and pseudodifferential equations in $\R^d$, that the solutions which are sufficiently regular and have a certain decay at infinity extend to holomorphic functions in sectors of $\mathbb{C}^d$, improving earlier results where the extension was shown for a strip. Moreover, exponential decay for such extended solutions is also proved. The results apply, in particular, to solitary wave solutions of many classical nonlinear evolution equations.
We consider the higher-order semilinear parabolic equation $$ \partial_t u = -(-Δ)^{m} u + u|u|^{p-1}, $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p > 1$ and $m \geq 1$ is an odd integer. We exhibit type I non self-similar blowup solutions for this equation and obtain a sharp description of its asymptotic behavior. The method of construction relies on the spectral analysis of a non self-adjoint linearized operator in an appropriate scaled variables setting. In view of known spectral and sectorial properties of the linearized operator obtained by [Galaktionov, rspa2011], we revisit the techniq…
We investigate existence and nonexistence of global in time nonnegative solutions to the semilinear heat equation, with a reaction term of the type $e^{μt}u^p$ ($μ\in\mathbb{R}, p>1$), posed on cones of the hyperbolic space. Under a certain assumption on $μ$ and $p$, related to the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ$ in $\mathbb H^n$, we prove that any solution blows up in finite time, for any nontrivial nonnegative initial datum. Instead, if the parameters $μ$ and $p$ satisfy the opposite condition we have: (a) blow-up when the initial datum is large enough, (b) existence of global solutions when …
We consider reaction-diffusion equations that are stochastically forced by a small multiplicative noise term. We show that spectrally stable travelling wave solutions to the deterministic system retain their orbital stability if the amplitude of the noise is sufficiently small. By applying a stochastic phase-shift together with a time-transform, we obtain a semilinear sPDE that describes the fluctuations from the primary wave. We subsequently develop a semigroup approach to handle the nonlinear stability question in a fashion that is closely related to modern deterministic methods.
We consider the reaction-diffusion problem $-Δ_g u = f(u)$ in $\mathcal{B}_R$ with zero Dirichlet boundary condition, posed in a geodesic ball $\mathcal{B}_R$ with radius $R$ of a Riemannian model $(M,g)$. This class of Riemannian manifolds includes the classical \textit{space forms}, i.e., the Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic spaces. For the class of semistable solutions we prove radial symmetry and monotonicity. Furthermore, we establish $L^\infty$, $L^p$, and $W^{1,p}$ estimates which are optimal and do not depend on the nonlinearity $f$. As an application, under standard assumptions on …
We consider a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. On the reaction term we impose conditions only near zero. Using variational methods, together with truncation and perturbation techniques and critical groups, we produce three nontrivial solutions with sign information. In the semilinear case we improve this result by obtaining a second nodal solution for a total of four nontrivial solutions. Finally, under a symmetry condition on the reaction term, we generate a whole sequence of distinct nodal solutions.
We give a sufficient condition for non-existence of global nonnegative mild solutions of the Cauchy problem for the semilinear heat equation $u' = Lu + f(u)$ in $L^p(X,m)$ for $p \in [1,\infty)$, where $(X,m)$ is a $σ$-finite measure space, $L$ is the infinitesimal generator of a sub-Markovian strongly continuous semigroup of bounded linear operators in $L^p(X,m)$, and $f$ is a strictly increasing, convex, continuous function on $[0,\infty)$ with $f(0) = 0$ and $\int_1^\infty 1/f < \infty$. Since we make no further assumptions on the behaviour of the diffusion, our main result can be seen as b…
A method is proposed to deal with some multivalued semiflows with weak continuity properties. An application to the reaction-diffusion problems with nonmonotone multivalued semilinear boundary condition and nonmonotone multivalued semilinear source term is presented.
We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by the $p$-Laplace differential operator with a reaction which has a subcritical growth restriction only from above. We prove two multiplicity theorems producing three nontrivial solutions, two of constant sign and the third nodal. The two multiplicity theorems differ on the geometry near the origin. In the semilinear case (that is, $p=2$), using Morse theory (critical groups), we produce a second nodal solution for a total of four nontrivial solutions. As an illustration, we show that our results incorporate and significantly extend the multipl…
The boundedness of stable solutions to semilinear (or reaction-diffusion) elliptic PDEs has been studied since the 1970's. In dimensions 10 and higher, there exist stable energy solutions which are unbounded (or singular). This note describes, for non-expert readers, a recent work in collaboration with Figalli, Ros-Oton, and Serra, where we prove that stable solutions are smooth up to the optimal dimension 9. This answers to an open problem posed by Brezis in the mid-nineties concerning the regularity of extremal solutions to Gelfand-type problems. We also describe, briefly, a famous analogue …
In this paper, using the subvariant functional method due to Favard \cite{Favard}, we prove the existence of aunique compact almost automorphic solution for a class of semilinear evolution equations in Banach spaces. More specifically, we improve the assumptions in \cite{CieuEzz}, we show that the almost automorphy of the coefficients in a weaker sense (Stepanov almost automorphy of order $1\leq p <\infty$) is enough to obtain solutions that are almost automorphic in a strong sense (Bochner almost automorphy). We distinguish two cases, $ p=1 $ and $ p>1$. Moreover, we propose to study a class …
This paper deals with a semilinear parabolic system with free boundary in one space dimension. We suppose that unknown functions $u$ and $v$ undergo nonlinear reactions $u^q$ and $v^p$, and exist initially in a interval $\{0\leq x\leq s(0)\}$, but expand to the right with spreading front $\{x=s(t)\}$, with $s(t)$ evolving according to the free boundary condition $s'(t)=-μ(u_x+ρv_x)$, where $p,\, q,\, μ, \,ρ$ are given positive constants. The main purpose of this paper is to understand the existence, uniqueness, regularity and long time behavior of positive solution or maximal positive solution…
In this paper we consider an extension of the results in shape differentiation of semilinear equations with smooth nonlinearity presented in J.I. Díaz and D. Gómez-Castro: An Application of Shape Differentiation to the Effectiveness of a Steady State Reaction-Diffusion Problem Arising in Chemical Engineering. Electron. J. Differ. Equations in 2015 to the case in which the nonlinearities might be less smooth. Namely we will show that Gateaux shape derivatives exists when the nonlinearity is only Lipschitz continuous, and we will give a definition of the derivative when the nonlinearity has a bl…
We study a semilinear parametric elliptic equation with superdiffusive reaction and mixed boundary conditions. Using variational methods, together with suitable truncation techniques, we prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the nonexistence, existence and multiplicity of positive solutions.
We consider a class of semilinear parabolic evolution equations subject to a hysteresis operator and a Bochner-Lebesgue integrable source term. The underlying spatial domain is allowed to have a very general boundary. In the first part of the paper, we apply semigroup theory to prove well-posedness and boundedness of the solution operator. Rate independence in reaction-diffusion systems complicates the analysis, since the reaction term acts no longer local in time. This demands careful estimates when working with semigroup methods. In the second part, we show Lipschitz continuity and Hadamard …
In this paper we study a family of semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on thin spatial domains, lying close to a lower dimensional submanifold $M$. As the thickness tends to zero, the domains collapse onto (a subset of) $M$. As it was proved in a previous paper (M. Prizzi, M. Rinaldi and K. P. Rybakowski, Curved thin domains and parabolic equations, Stud. Math. 151), the above family has a limit equation, which is an abstract semilinear parabolic equation defined on a certain abstract limit phase space. One of the objectives of this paper is to give more manageable characterizations of the…
We establish well-posedness in the mild sense for a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a polynomially growing quasi-monotone nonlinearity and multiplicative Poisson noise. We also study existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for the associated semigroup in the Markovian case. A key role is played by a new maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in $L_p$ spaces.
Models issued from ecology, chemical reactions and several other application fields lead to semi-linear parabolic equations with super-linear growth. Even if, in general, blow-up can occur, these models share the property that mass control is essential. In many circumstances, it is known that this $L^1$ control is enough to prove the global existence of weak solutions. The theory is based on basic estimates initiated by M. Pierre and collaborators, who have introduced methods to prove $L^2$ a priori estimates for the solution. Here, we establish such a key estimate with initial data in $L^1$ w…
