We numerically compute the temperature dependence of spin structure factor and thermodynamic quantities in the antiferromagnetic quantum Ising model in the pyrochlore lattice. This model exhibits spin disorder ground state with exponentially-decayed spin correlation. We reproduce the temperature dependence of the pinch point structure in the neutron scattering experiment and correct entropy obtained from the measurement of the specific heat.
The ordering of the Ising model on a pyrochlore lattice interacting via the long-range RKKY interaction, which models a metallic pyrochlore magnet such as Pr_2Ir_2O_7, is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. Depending on the parameter k_F representing the Fermi wavevector, the model exhibits rich ordering behaviors.
Ordering of the geometrically frustrated two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore slab is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The model is expected to serve as a reference system of SrCrGaO compound studied extensively. In sharp contrast to the kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the model exhibits locally non-coplanar spin structures at low temperatures, bearing nontrivial chiral degrees of freedom. We find that under certain conditions the model exhibits a novel Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition at a finite temperature associated with these chiral degrees of freedom. Impli…
We study corrections to single tetrahedron based approximations for the entropy, specific heat and uniform susceptibility of the pyrochlore lattice Ising antiferromagnet, by a Numerical Linked Cluster (NLC) expansion. In a tetrahedron based NLC, the first order gives the Pauling residual entropy of ${1\over 2}\log{3\over 2}\approx 0.20273$. A 16-th order NLC calculation changes the residual entropy to 0.205507 a correction of 1.37 percent over the Pauling value. At high temperatures, the accuracy of the calculations is verified by a high temperature series expansion. We find the corrections to…
We use Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the feasibility of detecting thermal order by disorder in real antiferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores, frustrated by a magnetic field applied in the $[110]$ direction. Building on an ideal system with only nearest-neighbour exchange interactions and a perfectly oriented field, we consider the effects of dipolar interactions and field misalignment. Our approach is special in that it relies more in the possibility to switch on and off the entropic drive towards order than in the absence of (or immunity to) a particular perturbation. It can then be applied,…
The ground state of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice is theoretically investigated. Starting from the limit of isolated tetrahedra, I include interactions between the tetrahedra and obtain an effective model for the spin-singlet ground state multiplet by third-order perturbation. I determine its ground state using the mean-field approximation and found a dimerized state with a four-sublattice structure, which agrees with the proposal by Harris et al. I also discuss chirality correlations and spin correlations for this state.
Pyrochlore magnets are candidates for spin-ice behavior. We present theoretical simulations of relevance for the pyrochlore family R2Ti2O7 (R= rare earth) supported by magnetothermal measurements on selected systems. By considering long ranged dipole-dipole as well as short-ranged superexchange interactions we get three distinct behaviours: (i) an ordered doubly degenerate state, (ii) a highly disordered state with a broad transition to paramagnetism, (iii) a partially ordered state with a sharp transition to paramagnetism. Thus these competing interactions can induce behaviour very different …
Ising models on a pyrochlore oxide lattice are usually associated with spin ice materials and "magnetic monopoles". Ever more often effects connecting magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom are reported on these and other related frustrated materials. Here we extend a spin-ice Hamiltonian to include coupling between spins and the O$^{-2}$ ions mediating superexchange; we call it the Magnetoelastic Spin Ice model (MeSI). There has been a long search for a model in which monopoles would spontaneously become the building blocks of new ground-states: the MeSI Hamiltonian is such a model. In spite…
For Ising spin models which bear the spin-ice type macroscopic (quasi-)degeneracy, conventional classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation using single spin flips suffers from dynamical freezing at low temperatures ($T$). A similar difficulty is seen also in a family of Heisenberg spin models with easy-axis anisotropy or biquadratic interactions. In the Ising case, the difficulty is avoided by introducing a non-local update based on the loop algorithm. We present an extension of the loop algorithm to the Heisenberg case. As an example of its application, we review our recent study on spin-glass (SG…
In this Comment we argue that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ does not exhibit a transition to a partially ordered state unlike what is argued in PRL 83, 1854 (1999), that it exhibits spin ice behavior, and that the experimental specific heat data by Siddharthan et al. can be accounted for in terms of a "dipolar spin ice" model by including an expected contibution from the nuclear Ho spins to the appropriate long-range treatment of the dipole-dipole interactions.
We study Ising pyrochlores by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We cover a set of exchange constants ranging from the frustrated ferromagnetic case (spin-ice) to the fully-ordered "all-in--all-out" antiferromagnet in the dipolar model, reinterpreting the results --as in an ionic system-- in terms of a temperature vs. magnetic charge density phase diagram. In spite of its spin nature and the presence of both double and single non-conserved magnetic charges, the dipolar model gives place to a phase diagram which is quite comparable with those previously obtained for on-lattice systems of electri…
The Ising-like spin ice model, with a macroscopically degenerate ground state, has been shown to be approximated by several real materials. Here we investigate a model related to spin ice, in which the Ising spins are replaced by classical Heisenberg spins. These populate a cubic pyrochlore lattice and are coupled to nearest neighbours by a ferromagnetic exchange term J and to the local <1,1,1> axes by a single-ion anisotropy term D. The near neighbour spin ice model corresponds to the case D/J infinite. For finite D/J we find that the macroscopic degeneracy of spin ice is broken and the groun…
The magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic Potts model with two-site interaction and the antiferromagnetic Ising model with three-site interaction on recursive lattices have been studied. A cyclic period-3 window has been revealed by the recurrence relation method in the antiferromagnetic Q-state Potts model on the Bethe lattice (at Q<2) and in the antiferromagnetic Ising model with three-site interaction on the Husimi cactus. The Lyapunov exponents have been calculated, modulated phases and a chaotic regime in the cyclic period-3 window have been found for one-dimensional rational mappi…
The glassy behavior observed in the pyrochlore magnet Y2Mo2O7, where the magnetic Mo^{4+} ions interact predominantly via isotropic nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange, possibly with additional weak disorder, is a distinct class of spin glass systems where frustration is mostly geometrical. A model proposed to describe such a spin glass behavior is the Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice with random but strictly antiferromagnetic exchange disorder. In this paper, we provide compelling numerical evidence from extensive Monte Carlo simulations which show that the model exhibits a fi…
The chaotic properties of the three-site antiferromagnetic Ising model on Husimi tree are investigated in magnetic field. Macroscopic quantity of three-site antiferromagnetic Ising model is generated by one dimensional map. It is shown that in certain parameter setting strange attractors of this map exhibit multifractal scaling. By applying thermodynamic formalism we find nonanalyticity in free energy as well as in entropy. We show that the temperature of phase transition depends on parameter of model and varies from negative to positive value.
We perform the high-performance computation of the ferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice. We determine the critical temperature accurately based on the finite-size scaling of the Binder ratio. Comparing with the data on the simple cubic lattice, we argue the universal finite-size scaling. We also calculate the classical XY model and the classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice.
Magnetizations of ferro- and antiferromagnetic Ising models with frustration on diamond hierarchical lattices are exactly obtained at zero temperature. For the zero-field classical spin-liquid phase found in [Kobayashi {\it et al}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 78, 074004 (2009) ], for which frustrating interactions play an important role, an infinitely small applied magnetic field can induce an infinitely small magnetization, despite classical Ising models that have discrete energy levels. In antiferromagnetic systems, the magnetization cannot saturate under finite magnetic fields owing to the competiti…
We study phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interaction on a Kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A histogram data analysis shows that a second order transition occurs in the model. From the analysis of obtained data, we can assume that next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a Kagome lattice excite the occurrence of a second order transition and unusual behavior of thermodynamic properties on the temperature dependence.
In this study, we have employed the classical transfer matrix technique to investigate the magnetization plateaus, phase diagrams and other thermodynamical properties of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-3/2 and spin-2 Ising chains with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of an external magnetic field at very low temperature. We have showed that single ion-anisotropy is one of the indispensable ingredients for an energy gap which leads to magnetic plateau mechanism in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising spin chains. Other thermodynamical predictions seem to be provide this argum…
The spin-1/2 Ising octahedron and dodecahedron with a unique antiferromagnetic interaction display an outstanding magnetization jump at zero magnetic field, which consequently leads to a giant magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization. In the present work we report temperature dependences of two basic magnetocaloric response functions: the isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic change of temperature. It is shown that the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron generally exhibit a large negative isothermal entropy change upon increasing of the magnetic field, which serves in evi…
This paper has a pedagogical introduction. We describe the correct method for performing Monte Carlo simulations of Ising model systems with spin greater than one half. Correct and incorrect procedures are clearly outlined and the consequences of using the incorrect procedure are shown. The difference between Kawasaki and Glauber dynamics is then outlined and both methods are applied to the antiferromagnetic square and triangular lattices for S =1.
Highly frustrated antiferromagnets composed of magnetic rare-earth moments are currently attracting much experimental and theoretical interest. Rare-earth ions generally have small exchange interactions and large magnetic moments. This makes it necessary to understand in detail the role of long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interactions in these systems, in particular in the context of spin-spin correlations that develop in the paramagnetic phase, but are often unable to condense into a conventional long-range magnetic ordered phase. This scenario is most dramatically emphasized in the frustrat…
We use Monte Carlo simulation to determine the stable structures in the second-neighbour Ising model on the face-centred cubic lattice. Those structures are L1_1 for strongly antiferromagnetic second neighbour interactions and L1_0 for ferromagnetic and weakly antiferromagnetic second neighbours. We find a third stable "intermediate" antiferromagnetic phase with I4_1/amd symmetry, and calculate the paramagnetic transition temperature for each. The transition temperature depends strongly on second neighbour interactions which are not frustrated. Our results contradict a recent paper, which also…
The sawtooth chain with pairs of $S=1/2$ spins interacting with $XXZ$-interactions placed on each second tooth is considered. All other interaction bonds are taken to be of Ising type. Exact statistical mechanical solution of the model within the direct transfer-matrix technique is obtained. The solution allows one to obtain exact analytic expressions for all thermodynamic functions of the model. Ground stated properties are also investigated, the corresponding ground state phase diagram is presented.
We study the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model in both uniform longitudinal ($H$) and transverse ($Ω$) magnetic fields by using the effective-field theory with finite cluster $N=1$ spin (EFT-1). We analyzed the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility to investigate the reentrant phenomena we have seen the same phase diagram previously obtained in another papers. Our results shows the presence of two divergences in the susceptibility that indicates the existence of a reentrant behaviour.
An asymmetrical 2D Ising model with a zigzag surface, created by diagonally cutting a regular square lattice, has been developed to investigate the thermodynamics and phase transitions on surface by the methodology of recursive lattice, which we have previously applied to study polymers near a surface. The model retains the advantages of simple formulation and exact calculation of the conventional Bethe-like lattices. An antiferromagnetic Ising model is solved on the surface of this lattice to evaluate thermal properties such as free energy, energy density and entropy, from which we have succe…
The field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in the ground state of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model is studied by the level-spectroscopy method. We analyze dimensions of operators around the BKT line, and estimate the BKT point $H_{\rm c}\simeq0.5229\pm0.001$, which is followed by a level-consistency check to demonstrate the accuracy of our estimate. Further we investigate the anisotropic case to clarify the stability of the field-induced string-density plateau against an incommensurate liquid state by the density-matrix renormalization-group method.
Antiferromagnetically coupled Ising s =3 spins on a triangular lattice are very close to ordering at zero temperature. The low temperature behaviour of a triangular lattice with Ising spins s =3 has been simulated by using both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. The formation of misfit clusters, which are essential for destabilizing the ordered state, are inhibited by the use of Kawasaki dynamics. The sublattice susceptibilities and the sublattice order parameter are found to depend qualitatively on the dynamics used so that robust ordering occurs when Kawasaki dynamics are employed. The thermal b…
The Ising chain consisting of the antiferromagneticaly coupled ferromagnetic trimer is considered in the external magnetic field. In the framework of the transfer-matrix formalism the thermodynamics of the system is described. The magnetization per site (m) is obtained as the explicit function of the external magnetic field (H). The corresponding plots of m(H) are drawn. Two qualitatively different regions of the values of coupling constants are established: weak antiferromagnetic coupling (J_A<3J_F) and the strong antiferromagnetic coupling $(J_A\geq3J_F)$. For the latter case the magnetizati…
We study a stacked triangular lattice Ising model with both intra- and inter-plane antiferromagnetic interactions in a field, by Monte Carlo simulation. We find only one phase transition from a paramagnetic to a partially disordered phase, which is of second order and 3D XY universality class. At low temperatures we identify two highly degenerate phases: at smaller (larger) fields the system shows long-range ordering in the stacking direction (within planes) but not in the planes (stacking direction). Nevertheless, crossovers to these phases do not have a character of conventional phase transi…
Topology of the space of periodic ground states in the antiferromagnetic Ising and Potts (3-state) models is analysed in selected spatial structures. The states are treated as graph nodes, connected by one-spin-flip transitions. The spatial structures are the triangular lattice, the Archimedean ($3,12^{2}$) lattice and the cubic Laves C15 lattice with the periodic boundary conditions. In most cases the ground states are isolated nodes, but for selected systems we obtain connected graphs. The latter means that the magnetisation can vary in time with zero energy cost. The ground states are class…
We obtain the persistence exponents for an antiferromagnetic Ising system in which the magnetisation is kept constant. This system belongs to Model C (system with non-conserved order parameter with a conserved density) and is expected to have persistence exponents different from that of Model A (system with no conservation) but independent of the conserved density. Our numerical results for both local persistence at zero temperature and global persistence at the critical temperature however indicate that the exponents are dependent on the conserved magnetisation in both two and three dimension…
We study by Monte Carlo simulations the short-time exponent $θ$ in an antiferromagnetic Ising system for which the magnetisation is conserved but the sublattice magnetisation (which is the order parameter in this case) is not. This system belongs to the dynamic class of model C. We use nearest neighbour Kawasaki dynamics so that the magnetisation is conserved {\em locally}. We find that in three dimensions $θ$ is independent of the conserved magnetisation. This is in agreement with the available theoretical studies, but in disagreement with previous simulation studies with global conservation …
Recent elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the highly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7 have shown some very intriguing features that cannot be modeled by the local <111> classical Ising model, naively expected to describe this system at low temperatures. Using the random phase approximation to take into account fluctuations between the ground state doublet and the first excited doublet, we successfully describe the elastic neutron scattering pattern and dispersion relations in Tb2Ti2O7, semi-quantitatively consistent with experimental observations.
We demonstrate the appearance of thermal order by disorder in Ising pyrochlores with staggered antiferromagnetic order frustrated by an applied magnetic field. We use a mean-field cluster variational method, a low-temperature expansion and Monte Carlo simulations to characterise the order-by-disorder transition. By direct evaluation of the density of states we quantitatively show how a symmetry-broken state is selected by thermal excitations. We discuss the relevance of our results to experiments in $2d$ and $3d$ samples, and evaluate how anomalous finite-size effects could be exploited to det…
From a microscopic model for the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Sn2O7, including the crystal field Hamiltonian and interactions between the angular momenta, we compute an effective pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian Heff$ that incorporates perturbatively in the effective interactions the effect of excited crystal field levels. We obtain the semiclassical ground states of Heff and find a region of parameter space with a two-in/two-out spin ice configuration on each tetrahedron with ordering wavevector q=0 and with spins canted away from the local Ising axes as found in Tb2Sn2O7. This ground state can al…
The highly frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on Checkerboard and Pyrochlore lattices is subject to strong quantum fluctuations. This problem is amenable to the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) algorithm, which systematically computes the effective interactions in a basis of local cluster eigenstates. CORE was recently used to derive the Plaquette Boson-Fermion model for the square lattice Hubbard model (cond-mat/0108087). For the spin half Checkerboard and Pyrochlore cases, we find singlet ground states which break lattice symmetry, and a gap to spin one excitations. The low excitations a…
Effects of local lattice distortions on the spin ordering are investigated for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice. It is found by Monte Carlo simulations that the spin-lattice coupling (SLC) originating from site phonons induces a first-order transition into two different types of collinear magnetic ordered states. The state realized at stronger SLC is cubic symmetric characterized by the magnetic (1/2,1/2,1/2) Bragg peaks, while that at weaker SLC is tetragonal symmetric characterized by the (1,1,0) ones, each accompanied by the commensurate local latti…
The hedgehog lattice, a three-dimensional periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, is known to be realized in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Here, we demonstrate by means of Monte Carlo simulations that the hedgehog lattice is induced by not the DM interaction but frustration in classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. In the model, the breathing bond-alternation is characterized by the ratio of the nearest-neighbor (NN) antiferromagnetic exchange interaction for large tetrahedra to that for small ones, J1'/J1. A qua…
The pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7 has proven to be an enigma to experimentalists and theorists working on frustrated magnetic systems. The experimentally determined energy level structure suggests a local <111> Ising antiferromagnet at low temperatures, T < 10 K. An appropriate model then predicts a long-range ordered Q = 0 state below approximately 2 K. However, muon spin resonance experiments reveal a paramagnetic structure down to tens of milli-Kelvin. The importance of fluctuations out of the ground state effective Ising doublet has been recently understood, for the measured paramagn…
We study quantum antiferromagnetism on the highly frustrated checkerboard lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings. The quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on this lattice is of interest as a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice magnet. By combining several approaches we conclude that this system is most likely ordered for all values of spin, $S$, with a Neel state for large $S$ giving way to a two-fold degenerate valence-bond solid for smaller $S$. We show next that the Ising antiferromagnet with a weak four-spin exchange, equivalent to square ice with the leading q…
We study diluted antiferromagnetic Ising models on triangular and kagome lattices in a magnetic field, using the replica-exchange Monte Carlo method. We observe seven and five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular and kagome lattices, respectively, when a magnetic field is applied. These observations contrast with the two plateaus observed in the pure model. The origin of multiple plateaus is investigated by considering the spin configuration of triangles in the diluted models. We compare these results with those of a diluted antifer…
In this work we study the two and three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with an imaginary magnetic field $iθ$ at $θ=π$. In order to perform numerical simulations of the system we introduce a new geometric algorithm not affected by the sign problem. Our results for the $2D$ model are in agreement with the analytical solutions. We also present new results for the $3D$ model which are qualitatively in agreement with mean-field predictions.
We show theoretically that spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore oxide Y2Mo2O7, which is free of quenched disorder, can exhibit a simultaneous glass transition, working as dynamical randomness to each other. The interplay of spins and orbitals is mediated by the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion that selects the choice of orbitals, which then generates variant spin exchange interactions ranging from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ones. Our Monte Carlo simulations detect the power-law divergence of the relaxation times and the negative divergence of both the magnetic and dielec…
In this work we deal with doubly decorated Ising-Heisenberg models on planar lattices. Applying the generalized decoration-iteration transformation we obtain exact results for the antiferromagnetic version of the model. The existence of a new quantum dimerized phase is predicted and its physical properties are studied and analyzed. Particular attention has been paid to the investigation of the phase boundaries, pair-correlation functions and specific heat. A possible application of the present work to some molecular magnets is also drawn.
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
The antiferromagnetic Ising model in small-world networks generated from two-dimensional regular lattices has been studied. The disorder introduced by long-range connections causes frustration, which gives rise to a spin-glass phase at low temperature. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to study the paramagnetic to spin-glass transition, as a function of the rewiring probability p, which measures the disorder strength. The transition temperature Tc goes down for increasing disorder, and saturates to a value Tc ~ 1.7 J for p > 0.4, J being the antiferromagnetic coupling. For small p …
The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered qua…
Thermodynamic properties of a tetramer ferro-ferro-antiferro-antiferromagnetic Ising-Heisenberg bond alternating chain are investigated by the use of an exact mapping transformation technique. Exact results for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat in the zero as well as nonzero magnetic field are presented and discussed in detail. The results obtained from the mapping are compared with the relevant experimental data of Cu(3-Clpy)$_2$(N$_3$)$_2$ (3-Clpy=3-Chloropyridine).
We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore oxide Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ using the density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion ($U$) method, and depict the ground-state phase diagram with respect to $U$. We conclude that the all-in/all-out non-collinear magnetic order is stable in a wide range of $U$. We also show that the easy-axis anisotropy arising from the spin-orbit (SO) coupling plays a significant role in stabilizing the all-in/all-out magnetic order. A \textit{pseudo gap} was observed near the transition between the antiferromagnetic metallic and insulating…
We study a large-N deformation of the S=1/2 pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet which leads to a soluble quantum dimer model at leading non-trivial order. In this limit, the ground state manifold -- while extensively degenerate -- breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice, which implies a finite temperature Ising transition without translational symmetry breaking. At lower temperatures and further in the 1/N expansion, we discuss an effective Hamiltonian within the degenerate manifold, which has a transparent physical interpretation as representing dimer potential energies. We find mean-f…
Using combinatorial optimisation techniques we study the critical properties of the two- and the three-dimensional Ising model with uniformly distributed random antiferromagnetic couplings $(1 \le J_i \le 2)$ in the presence of a homogeneous longitudinal field, $h$, at zero temperature. In finite systems of linear size, $L$, we measure the average correlation function, $C_L(\ell,h)$, when the sites are either on the same sub-lattice, or they belong to different sub-lattices. The phase transition, which is of first-order in the pure system, turns to mixed order in two dimensions with critical e…
Saturation field entropies of antiferromagnetic Ising models on quasi one-dimensional lattices (ladders) and the kagome lattice are calculated. The former is evaluated exactly by constructing the corresponding transfer matrices, while the latter calculation uses Binder's algorithm for efficiently and exactly computing the partition function of over 1300 spins to give, in Boltzmann's units, S = 0.393589(6). We comment on the relation of the kagome lattice to the experimental situation in the spin-ice compound dysprosium titanium oxide.
The ordering of the classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice with the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction J2 is investigated by means of a mean-field analysis and a Monte Carlo simulation. For a moderate J2/J1-value, the model exhibits a first-order transition into an incommensurate multiple-q ordered state where multiple Bragg peaks coexist in the spin structure factor. We show that there are two types of metastable multiple-q states, a cubic symmetric sextuple-q state and a non-cubic symmetric quadruple-q stat…
