Suppose we are given a symmetric operator T acting on a subspace of L2{M,m} where M is a connected manifold and m is a measure positive on open sets. Then there is at most one eigenspace that contains a real valued eigenfunction whose set of zeros has dimension less than n minus one, where n is the dimension of M.
We obtain sharp uniform bounds on the low lying eigenfunctions for a class of semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics and complex valued symbols, under the assumption that the quadratic approximations along the double characteristics are elliptic.
We deal with the Sturm--Liouville operator $Ly=l(y)=-\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}+q(x)y,$ with Dirichlet--Neumann boundary conditions $ y(0)=y'(π)=0 $ in the space $L_2[0,π]$. We assume that the potential $q$ is complex-valued and has the form $q(x)=u'(x)$, where $u\in L_2[0,π]$. Here the derivative is treated in the distributional sense. Our aim is to obtain the detailed asymptotic formulae for eigenvalues and eigen- and associated functions of the operator $L$.
We give a description of the growth rates of $L^2$-normalized Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit disk with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we show that the growth rates of both Dirichlet and Neumann eigenfunctions are bounded away from zero. Our approach starts with P. Sarnak growth exponents and uses several key asymptotic formulas for Bessel functions or their zeros.
We provide Fourier expansions of vector-valued eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian that are twist-periodic in a horocycle direction. The twist may be given by any endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space; no assumptions on invertibility or unitarity are made. Examples of such eigenfunctions include vector-valued twisted automorphic forms of Fuchsian groups. We further provide a detailed description of the Fourier coefficients and explicitly identify each of their constituents, which intimately depend on the eigenvalues of the twisting endomorphism and the size of its Jordan blo…
We prove that, given any knot $γ$ in a compact 3-manifold M, there exists a Riemannian metric on M such that there is a complex-valued eigenfunction u of the Laplacian, corresponding to the first nontrivial eigenvalue, whose nodal set $u^{-1}(0)$ has a connected component given by $γ$. Higher dimensional analogs of this result will also be considered.
We study the dependence of the zeros of eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problem on the parameters that define the boundary conditions. As a corollary, we obtain Sturm oscillation theorem, which states that the $n$-th eigenfunction has $n$ zeros.
We extend the classical Mercer theorem to reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces whose elements are functions from a measurable space $X$into $\mathbb C^n$. Given a finite measure $μ$ on $X$, we represent the reproducing kernel $K$ as convergent series in terms of the eigenfunctions of a suitable compact operator depending on $K$ and $μ$. Our result holds under the mild assumption that $K$ is measurable and the associated Hilbert space is separable. Furthermore, we show that $X$ has a natural second countable topology with respect to which the eigenfunctions are continuous and the series representi…
We prove that, given any finite link L in R^3, there is a high energy complex-valued eigenfunction of the harmonic oscillator such that its nodal set contains a union of connected components diffeomorphic to L. This solves a problem of Berry on the existence of knotted zeros in bound states of a quantum system.
We determine the limit distribution (as $λ\to \infty$) of complex zeros for holomorphic continuations $ϕ_λ^{\C}$ to Grauert tubes of real eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a real analytic compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow. If $\{ϕ_{j_k} \}$ is an ergodic sequence of eigenfunctions, we prove the weak limit formula $\frac{1}{λ_j} [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}] \to \frac{i}π \bar{\partial} {\partial} |ξ|_g$, where $ [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}]$ is the current of integration over the complex zeros and where $\bar{\partial}$ is with respect to the adapted complex structure of Lempert-Szök…
We consider linear combinations of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and investigate a density property of their zero sets. More precisely, let $f=\sum_{k=1}^m a_k ϕ_{λ_{j_k}}$, where $-Δ_gϕ_λ=λϕ_λ$. Denoting by $Z_f$ the zero-set of $f$, we show that for any $x\in M$, $dist(x,Z_f)\leq C(m)λ_{j_1}^{-1/2}$. The proof is based on a new integral Harnack-type estimate for positive solutions of higher order elliptic PDEs.
We extend the estimates proved by Donnelly and Fefferman and by Lebeau and Robbiano for sums of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian (on a compact manifold) to estimates for sums of eigenfunctions of any positive and elliptic pseudo-differential operator of positive order on a compact Lie group. Our criteria are imposed in terms of the positivity of the corresponding matrix-valued symbol of the operator. As an application of these inequalities in the control theory, we obtain the null-controllability for diffusion models for elliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups.
Motivated by recent questions about the extension of Courant's nodal domain theorem, we revisit a theorem published by C. Sturm in 1836, which deals with zeros of linear combination of eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problems. Although well known in the nineteenth century, this theorem seems to have been ignored or forgotten by some of the specialists in spectral theory since the second half of the twentieth-century. Although not specialists in History of Sciences, we have tried to put these theorems into the context of nineteenth century mathematics.
We relate high-energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type operators to frame flows on the corresponding manifolds, and show that the ergodicity of frame flows implies quantum ergodicity in an appropriate sense for those operators. Observables for the corresponding quantum systems are matrix-valued pseudodifferential operators and therefore the system remains non-commutative in the high-energy limit. We discuss to what extent the space of stationary high-energy states behaves classically.
This is a review of old and new results and methods related to the Yau conjecture on the zero set of Laplace eigenfunctions. The review accompanies two lectures given at the conference CDM 2018. We discuss the works of Donnelly and Fefferman including their solution of the conjecture in the case of real-analytic Riemannian manifolds. The review exposes the new results for Yau's conjecture in the smooth setting. We try to avoid technical details and emphasize the main ideas of the proof of Nadirashvili's conjecture. We also discuss two-dimensional methods to study zero sets.
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We obtain lower bounds for the number of nodal domains of Hecke eigenfunctions on the sphere. Assuming the generalized Lindelof hypothesis we prove that the number of nodal domains of any Hecke eigenfunction grows with the eigenvalue of the Laplacian. By a very different method, we show unconditionally that the average number of nodal domains of degree l Hecke eigenfunctions grows significantly faster than the uniform growth obtained under Lindelof.
The paper deals with the Dirac operator generated on the finite interval $[0,π]$ by the differential expression $-B\mathbf{y}'+Q(x)\mathbf{y}$, where $$ B=\begin{pmatrix}0&1\\-1&0\end{pmatrix},\qquad Q(x)=\begin{pmatrix}q_1(x)&q_2(x)\\q_3(x)&q_4(x)\end{pmatrix}, $$ and the entries $q_j(x)$ belong to~$L_p[0,π]$ for some $p\geqslant 1$. The classes of regular and strongly regular operators of this form are defined, depending on the boundary conditions. The asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of such operators are obtained with remainders depending on~$p$. It it is proved t…
In this paper we study the asymptotic zero distribution of eigenpolynomials for degenerate exactly-solvable operators. We present an explicit conjecture and partial results on the growth of the largest modulus of the roots of the unique and monic n:th degree eigenpolynomial of any such operator as the degree n tends to infinity. Based on this conjecture we deduce the algebraic equation satified by the Cauchy transform of the asymptotic root measure of the properly scaled eigenpolynomials, for which the union of all roots is conjecturally contained in a compact set.
In the second section "Courant-Gelfand theorem" of his last published paper (Topological properties of eigenoscillations in mathematical physics, Proc. Steklov Institute Math. 273 (2011) 25--34), Arnold recounts Gelfand's strategy to prove that the zeros of any linear combination of the $n$ first eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville problem $$-\, y"(s) + q(x)\, y(x) = λ\, y(x) \mbox{ in } ]0,1[\,, \mbox{ with } y(0)=y(1)=0\,,$$divide the interval into at most $n$ connected components, and concludes that "the lack of a published formal text with a rigorous proof \dots is still distressing." In…
We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with strictly ergodic, aperiodic potentials taking finitely many values. The well-known tendency of these operators to have purely singular continuous spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure is further elucidated. We provide a unified approach to both the study of the spectral type as well as the measure of the spectrum as a set. We apply this approach to Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. Finally, in the appendix, we discuss the two different strictly ergodic dynamical systems associated to a circle map.
We provide a limiting absorption principle for the self-adjoint realizations of Laplace operators corresponding to boundary conditions on (relatively open parts $Σ$ of) compact hypersurfaces $Γ=\partialΩ$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n}$. For any of such self-adjoint operators we also provide the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering matrix; both these objects are written in terms of operator-valued Weyl functions. We make use of a Krein-type formula which provides the resolvent difference between the operator corresponding to self-adjoint boundary conditions on the hypersurface and the fre…
We prove an analogue of the magnetic nodal theorem on quantum graphs: the number of zeros $ϕ$ of the $n$-th eigenfunction of the Schrödinger operator on a quantum graph is related to the stability of the $n$-th eigenvalue of the perturbation of the operator by magnetic potential. More precisely, we consider the $n$-th eigenvalue as a function of the magnetic perturbation and show that its Morse index at zero magnetic field is equal to $ϕ- (n-1)$.
We show that the eigenspaces of the Dirac operator $H=α\cdot (D - A(x)) + m β$ at the threshold energies $\pm m$ are coincide with the direct sum of the zero space and the kernel of the Weyl-Dirac operator $σ\cdot (D - A(x))$. Based on this result, we describe the asymptotic limits of the eigenfunctions of the Dirac operator corresponding to these threshold energies. Also, we discuss the set of vector potentials for which the kernels of $H\mp m$ are non-trivial, i.e. ${Ker}(H\mp m) \not = \{0 \}$.
The theory of finite-rank perturbations allows for the determination of spectral information for broad classes of operators using the tools of analytic function theory. In this work, finite-rank perturbations are applied to powers of the derivative operator, providing a full account from self-adjoint boundary conditions to computing aspects of the operators' matrix-valued spectral measures. In particular, the support and weights of the Clark (spectral) measures are computed via the connection between matrix-valued contractive analytic functions and matrix-valued nonnegative measures through th…
Using as starting point a classical integral representation of a L-function we define a familly of two variables extended functions which are eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator (having imaginary part of zeros as eigenvalues). This Hermitian operator can take also other forms, more symetric. In the case of particular L-functions, like Zeta function or Dirichlet L-functions, the eigenfunctions defined for this operator have symmetry properties. Moreover, for s zero fo Zeta function (or Dirichlet L-function), the associated eigenfunction has a specific property (a part of eigenfunction is can…
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a domain in R^d and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This generalizes our previous results in two dimensions and, as in that case, allows us to obtain an approximation for Dirichlet eigenvalues for a large class of domains, under very mild assumptions. As an application, we derive a three--term asymptotic expansion for the first eigenvalue of d-dimensional ellipsoids.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a planar domain and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the spectrum. We derive the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This method allows us, for instance, to obtain an approximation for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a large class of planar domains, under very mild assumptions.
Given a complex, separable Hilbert space $\cH$, we consider differential expressions of the type $τ= - (d^2/dx^2) + V(x)$, with $x \in (a,\infty)$ or $x \in \bbR$. Here $V$ denotes a bounded operator-valued potential $V(\cdot) \in \cB(\cH)$ such that $V(\cdot)$ is weakly measurable and the operator norm $\|V(\cdot)\|_{\cB(\cH)}$ is locally integrable. We consider self-adjoint half-line $L^2$-realizations $H_α$ in $L^2((a,\infty); dx; \cH)$ associated with $τ$, assuming $a$ to be a regular endpoint necessitating a boundary condition of the type $\sin(α)u'(a) + \cos(α)u(a)=0$, indexed by the sel…
Let $Δ_M$ be the Laplace operator on a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. We study the zero sets of its eigenfunctions $u:Δu + λu =0$. In dimension $n=2$ we refine the Donnelly-Fefferman estimate by showing that $H^1(\{u=0 \})\le Cλ^{3/4-β}$, $β\in (0,1/4)$. The proof employs the Donnelli-Fefferman estimate and a combinatorial argument, which also gives a lower (non-sharp) bound in dimension $n=3$: $H^2(\{u=0\})\ge cλ^α$, $α\in (0,1/2)$. The positive constants $c,C$ depend on the manifold, $α$ and $β$ are universal.
The paper addresses the the number of nodal domains for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions in bounded domains. In dimension one, the $n$th eigenfunction has $n$ nodal domains. The Courant Theorem claims that in any dimension, the number of nodal domains of the $n$th eigenfunction cannot exceed $n$. However, in dimensions higher than 1 the equality can hold for only finitely many eigenfunctions. Thus, a "nodal deficiency" arises. Examples are known of eigenfunctions with arbitrarily large index $n$ that have just two nodal domains. It was suggested in the…
We study the large-time behavior of the solutions to the Schrödinger equation associated with a quickly decaying potential in dimension three. We establish the resolvent expansions at threshold zero and near positive resonances. The large-time expansions of solutions are obtained under different conditions, including the existence of positive resonances and zero resonance or/and zero eigenvalue.
