We determine the limit distribution (as $λ\to \infty$) of complex zeros for holomorphic continuations $ϕ_λ^{\C}$ to Grauert tubes of real eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a real analytic compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow. If $\{ϕ_{j_k} \}$ is an ergodic sequence of eigenfunctions, we prove the weak limit formula $\frac{1}{λ_j} [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}] \to \frac{i}π \bar{\partial} {\partial} |ξ|_g$, where $ [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}]$ is the current of integration over the complex zeros and where $\bar{\partial}$ is with respect to the adapted complex structure of Lempert-Szöke and Guillemin-Stenzel.
In this short note we show that the lower bounds of Mangoubi on the inner radius of nodal domains can be improved for quantum ergodic sequences of eigenfunctions, according to a certain power of the radius of shrinking balls on which the eigenfunctions equidistribute. We prove such improvements using a quick application of our recent results (arXiv:1606.02057), which give modified growth estimates for eigenfunctions that equidistribute on small balls. Since by the results of Han and Hezari-Rivière small scale QE holds for negatively curved manifolds on logarithmically shrinking balls, we get l…
We prove an analogue of Sogge's local $L^p$ estimates for $L^p$ norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions to submanifolds, and use it to show that for quantum ergodic eigenfunctions one can get improvements of the results of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov, Hu, and Chen-Sogge. The improvements are logarithmic on negatively curved manifolds (without boundary) and by $o(1)$ for manifolds (with or without boundary) with ergodic geodesic flows. In the case of ergodic billiards with piecewise smooth boundary, we get $o(1)$ improvements on $L^\infty$ estimates of Cauchy data away from a shrinking neighborhood of…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds. We show that Benjamini-Schramm convergence provides a unified language for the level and eigenvalue aspects of the theory. As a result, we present a mathematically precise formulation of Berry's conjecture for a compact negatively curved manifold and formulate a Berry-type conjecture for sequences of locally symmetric spaces. We prove some weak versions of these conjectures. Using ergodic theory, we also analyze the connections of these conjectures to Quantum Unique Ergodicity.
We relate high-energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type operators to frame flows on the corresponding manifolds, and show that the ergodicity of frame flows implies quantum ergodicity in an appropriate sense for those operators. Observables for the corresponding quantum systems are matrix-valued pseudodifferential operators and therefore the system remains non-commutative in the high-energy limit. We discuss to what extent the space of stationary high-energy states behaves classically.
We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with strictly ergodic, aperiodic potentials taking finitely many values. The well-known tendency of these operators to have purely singular continuous spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure is further elucidated. We provide a unified approach to both the study of the spectral type as well as the measure of the spectrum as a set. We apply this approach to Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. Finally, in the appendix, we discuss the two different strictly ergodic dynamical systems associated to a circle map.
We consider the the intersections of the complex nodal set of the analytic continuation of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a real analytic surface with the complexification of a geodesic. We prove that if the geodesic flow is ergodic and if the geodesic is periodic and satisfies a generic asymmetry condition, then the intersection points condense along the real geodesic and become uniformly distributed with respect to its arc-length. We prove an analogous result for non-periodic geodesics except that the `origin' is allowed to move with $λ_j$. The proof uses the quantum ergodic restrictio…
In this note we show that if a family of ergodic Schrödinger operators on $l^2({\Bbb Z}^γ)$ with continuous potentials have uniformly localized eigenfunctions then these eigenfunctions must be uniformly localized in a homogeneous sense.
Suppose we are given a symmetric operator T acting on a subspace of L2{M,m} where M is a connected manifold and m is a measure positive on open sets. Then there is at most one eigenspace that contains a real valued eigenfunction whose set of zeros has dimension less than n minus one, where n is the dimension of M.
We study the dependence of the zeros of eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problem on the parameters that define the boundary conditions. As a corollary, we obtain Sturm oscillation theorem, which states that the $n$-th eigenfunction has $n$ zeros.
We give a description of the growth rates of $L^2$-normalized Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit disk with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we show that the growth rates of both Dirichlet and Neumann eigenfunctions are bounded away from zero. Our approach starts with P. Sarnak growth exponents and uses several key asymptotic formulas for Bessel functions or their zeros.
This is a review of old and new results and methods related to the Yau conjecture on the zero set of Laplace eigenfunctions. The review accompanies two lectures given at the conference CDM 2018. We discuss the works of Donnelly and Fefferman including their solution of the conjecture in the case of real-analytic Riemannian manifolds. The review exposes the new results for Yau's conjecture in the smooth setting. We try to avoid technical details and emphasize the main ideas of the proof of Nadirashvili's conjecture. We also discuss two-dimensional methods to study zero sets.
We prove that, given any finite link L in R^3, there is a high energy complex-valued eigenfunction of the harmonic oscillator such that its nodal set contains a union of connected components diffeomorphic to L. This solves a problem of Berry on the existence of knotted zeros in bound states of a quantum system.
We consider linear combinations of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and investigate a density property of their zero sets. More precisely, let $f=\sum_{k=1}^m a_k ϕ_{λ_{j_k}}$, where $-Δ_gϕ_λ=λϕ_λ$. Denoting by $Z_f$ the zero-set of $f$, we show that for any $x\in M$, $dist(x,Z_f)\leq C(m)λ_{j_1}^{-1/2}$. The proof is based on a new integral Harnack-type estimate for positive solutions of higher order elliptic PDEs.
Motivated by recent questions about the extension of Courant's nodal domain theorem, we revisit a theorem published by C. Sturm in 1836, which deals with zeros of linear combination of eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problems. Although well known in the nineteenth century, this theorem seems to have been ignored or forgotten by some of the specialists in spectral theory since the second half of the twentieth-century. Although not specialists in History of Sciences, we have tried to put these theorems into the context of nineteenth century mathematics.
By combining some ideas of Lubinsky with some soft analysis, we prove that universality and clock behavior of zeros for OPRL in the a.c. spectral region is implied by convergence of $\frac{1}{n} K_n(x,x)$ for the diagonal CD kernel and boundedness of the analog associated to second kind polynomials. We then show that these hypotheses are always valid for ergodic Jacobi matrices with a.c. spectrum and prove that the limit of $\frac{1}{n} K_n(x,x)$ is $ρ_\infty(x)/w(x)$ where $ρ_\infty$ is the density of zeros and $w$ is the a.c. weight of the spectral measure.
Under suitable hypotheses, a symplectic map can be quantized as a sequence of unitary operators acting on the $N$th powers of a positive line bundle over a Kähler manifold. We show that if the symplectic map has polynomial decay of correlations, then there exists a density one subsequence of eigensections whose masses and zeros become equidistributed in balls of logarithmically shrinking radii of lengths $\lvert \log N \rvert^{-γ}$ for some constant $γ> 0$ independent of $N$.
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We obtain lower bounds for the number of nodal domains of Hecke eigenfunctions on the sphere. Assuming the generalized Lindelof hypothesis we prove that the number of nodal domains of any Hecke eigenfunction grows with the eigenvalue of the Laplacian. By a very different method, we show unconditionally that the average number of nodal domains of degree l Hecke eigenfunctions grows significantly faster than the uniform growth obtained under Lindelof.
In the second section "Courant-Gelfand theorem" of his last published paper (Topological properties of eigenoscillations in mathematical physics, Proc. Steklov Institute Math. 273 (2011) 25--34), Arnold recounts Gelfand's strategy to prove that the zeros of any linear combination of the $n$ first eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville problem $$-\, y"(s) + q(x)\, y(x) = λ\, y(x) \mbox{ in } ]0,1[\,, \mbox{ with } y(0)=y(1)=0\,,$$divide the interval into at most $n$ connected components, and concludes that "the lack of a published formal text with a rigorous proof \dots is still distressing." In…
For a compact locally symmetric space $\XG$ of non-positive curvature, we consider sequences of normalized joint eigenfunctions which belong to the principal spectrum of the algebra of invariant differential operators. Using an $h$-\psdiff\ calculus on $\XG$, we define and study lifted quantum limits as weak$^*$-limit points of Wigner distributions. The Helgason boundary values of the eigenfunctions allow us to construct Patterson--Sullivan distributions on the space of Weyl chambers. These distributions are asymptotic to lifted quantum limits and satisfy additional invariance properties, whic…
We prove an analogue of the magnetic nodal theorem on quantum graphs: the number of zeros $ϕ$ of the $n$-th eigenfunction of the Schrödinger operator on a quantum graph is related to the stability of the $n$-th eigenvalue of the perturbation of the operator by magnetic potential. More precisely, we consider the $n$-th eigenvalue as a function of the magnetic perturbation and show that its Morse index at zero magnetic field is equal to $ϕ- (n-1)$.
In this paper we obtain upper quantum dynamical bounds as a corollary of positive Lyapunov exponent for Schrödinger operators $H_{f,θ} u(n)=u(n+1)+u(n-1)+ ϕ(f^nθ)u(n)$, where $ϕ: \mathcal{M}\to {\Bbb R}$ is a piecewise Hölder function on a compact Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$, and $f:\mathcal{M}\to\mathcal{M}$ is a uniquely ergodic volume preserving map with zero topological entropy. As corollaries we obtain localization-type statements for shifts and skew-shifts on higher dimensional tori with arithmetic conditions on the parameters. These are the first localization-type results with pre…
Using as starting point a classical integral representation of a L-function we define a familly of two variables extended functions which are eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator (having imaginary part of zeros as eigenvalues). This Hermitian operator can take also other forms, more symetric. In the case of particular L-functions, like Zeta function or Dirichlet L-functions, the eigenfunctions defined for this operator have symmetry properties. Moreover, for s zero fo Zeta function (or Dirichlet L-function), the associated eigenfunction has a specific property (a part of eigenfunction is can…
