We study hyper-spheres, spheres and circles, with respect to an indefinite metric, in a tangent space on a 4-dimensional differentiable manifold. The manifold is equipped with a positive definite metric and an additional tensor structure of type (1, 1)11. The fourth power of the additional structure is minus identity and its components form a skew-circulant matrix in some local coordinate system. The both structures are compatible and they determine an associated indefinite metric on the manifold.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a real finite-dimensional Lie algebra equipped with a symmetric bilinear form $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle$. We assume that $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle $ is nil-invariant. This means that every nilpotent operator in the smallest algebraic Lie subalgebra of endomomorphims containing the adjoint representation of $\mathfrak{g}$ is an infinitesimal isometry for $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle $. Among these Lie algebras are the isometry Lie algebras of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of finite volume. We prove a strong invariance property for nil-invariant symmetric bilinear forms, whic…
In this paper we build the structure equations and the integrable systems for a discrete centroaffine indefinite surface in $\R^3$. At the same time, some centroaffine invariants are obtained according to the structure equations. Using these centroaffine invariants, we study the Laplacian operator and the convexity of a discrete centroaffine indefinite surface. Furthermore, some interest examples are provided.
We consider a $3$-dimensional differentiable manifold with two circulant structures -- a Riemannian metric and an additional structure, whose third power is the identity. The structure is compatible with the metric such that an isometry is induced in any tangent space of the manifold. Further, we consider an associated metric with the Riemannian metric, which is necessary indefinite. We find equations of a sphere and of a circle, which are given in terms of the associated metric, with respect to the Riemannian metric.
Let $M$ be a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous space of finite volume with isometry group $G$. We show that $M$ is compact and that the solvable radical of $G$ is abelian and the Levi factor is a compact semisimple Lie group acting transitively on $M$. For metric index less than three, we find that the isometry group of $M$ is compact itself. Examples demonstrate that $G$ is not necessarily compact for higher indices. To prepare these results, we study Lie algebras with abelian solvable radical and a nil-invariant symmetric bilinear form. For these, we derive an orthogonal decompo…
We present a definition of indefinite Kasparov modules, a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. Our main theorem shows that to each indefinite Kasparov module we can associate a pair of (genuine) Kasparov modules, and that this process is reversible. We present three examples of our framework: the Dirac operator on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold (i.e. a manifold with an indefinite metric), the harmonic oscillator, and the construction via the Kasparov product of an indefinite spectral triple from a family of spectr…
We improve our previous results on indefinite Kasparov modules, which provide a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. In particular, we can weaken the assumptions that are imposed on indefinite Kasparov modules. Using a new theorem by Lesch and Mesland on the self-adjointness and regularity of the sum of two weakly anticommuting operators, we show that we still have an equivalence between indefinite Kasparov modules and pairs of Kasparov modules. Importantly, the weakened version of indefinite Kasparov modules now inc…
We wish to attack the problems that H.~Anciaux and K.~Panagiotidou posed in [1], for non-degenerate real hypersurfaces in indefinite complex projective space. We will slightly change these authors' point of view, obtaining cleaner equations for the almost contact metric structure. To make the theory meaningful, we construct new families of non-degenerate Hopf real hypersurfaces whose shape operator is diagonalisable, and one Hopf example with degenerate metric and non-diagonalisable shape operator. Next, we obtain a rigidity result. We classify those real hypersurfaces which are $η$-umbilical.…
In this paper we provide a method to study critical points of strongly indefinite functionals on vector bundles. We focus mainly on energy functionals coupled with a fermionic part, that is with a Dirac-type operator. We consider the cases of the perturbed Dirac-Geodesics problem and the Yang-Mills-Dirac type equation in dimension two.
It is well known that if the dimension of the Sasaki cone is greater than one, then all Sasakian structures are either positive or indefinite. We discuss the phenomenon of type changing within a fixed Sasaki cone. Assuming henceforth that the dimension of the Sasaki cone is greater than one, there are three possibilities, either all elements are positive, all are indefinite, or both positive and indefinite Sasakian structures occur. We illustrate by examples how the type can change as we move in the Sasaki cone. If there exists a Sasakian structure in the cone whose total transverse scalar cur…
String structures have played an important role in algebraic topology, via elliptic genera and elliptic cohomology, in differential geometry, via the study of higher geometric structures, and in physics, via partition functions. We extend the description of String structures from connected covers of the definite-signature orthogonal group ${\rm O}(n)$ to the indefinite-signature orthogonal group O(p, q), i.e. from the Riemannian to the pseudo-Riemannian setting. This requires that we work at the unstable level, which makes the discussion more subtle than the stable case. Similar, but much simp…
We propose a model for a growth competition between two subsets of a Riemannian manifold. The sets grow at two different rates, avoiding each other. It is shown that if the competition takes place on a surface which is rotationally symmetric about the starting point of the slower set, then if the surface is conformally equivalent to the Euclidean plane, the slower set remains in a bounded region, while if the surface is nonpositively curved and conformally equivalent to the hyperbolic plane, both sets may keep growing indefinitely.
