It has been shown that the use of a bent crystal with a variable curvature radius makes it possible to reduce the fraction of dechanneled particles by an order of magnitude. This effect enables the strong reduction of the particle density at the edge of a collimator or the partition of a septum upon the multiturn extraction of a beam from a ring accelerator. In particular, the beam extraction efficiency at the U-70 synchrotron and Large Hadron Collider can be increased to 95 and 99.65%, respectively.
The efficiency of the beam extraction and collimation systems in circular accelerators with the use of the channeling effect in a bent crystal is determined. The dependences of the extraction efficiency on the geometrical parameters of the crystal (its length, thickness, and bending angle), the azimuthal location of the system components, and the offset of the septum or scraper are presented. The influence of crystal imperfections (amorphous layers, misorientation, and torsion) on the efficiency of the systems is considered, and their tolerances are proposed. It is shown that an extraction eff…
The T-980 bent crystal collimation experiment at the Tevatron has recently acquired substantial enhancements. First, two new crystals - a 16-strip one manufactured and characterized by the INFN Ferrara group and a quasi-mosaic crystal manufactured and characterized by the PNPI group. Second, a two plane telescope with 3 high-resolution pixel detectors per plane along with corresponding mechanics, electronics, control and software has been manufactured, tested and installed in the E0 crystal region. The purpose of the pixel telescope is to measure and image channeled (CH), volume-reflected (VR)…
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) uses a multi-stage collimator system to absorb the growing halo of circulating beams to protect and ensure reliable operation of superconducting magnets. A similar system is planned for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). In anticipation of the LHC operation with high luminosity, research is being conducted to improve the collimation system. Studies have shown that one of the solutions to improve beam collimation is to use channeling in a short curved crystal, which acts as a primary collimator, throwing particles deep into the secondary collimator by channeling…
The studies of crystal collimation in the experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Tevatron and in computer simulations reveal strong coherent effects observed in a very broad angular range. Our theory explains the effects by coherent scattering on the potential of bent crystal atomic planes, which amplifies beam diffusion in accelerator by orders of magnitude. This coherent scattering in bent crystal is being studied in a CERN SPS experiment. We present Monte Carlo predictions for the SPS and Tevatron experiments, and show the implications of the coherent scattering effect for cryst…
Strong effect of beam coherent scattering ("reflection") in a field of bent crystal is observed in crystal collimation experiments performed with heavy ions and protons at RHIC and started at Tevatron collider. Detailed simulation using Monte Carlo code CATCH is done in order to understand the observations and relate them to the physics of beam coherent scattering in crystal. A.M. Taratin and S.A. Vorobiev predicted the effect of beam "volume reflection" in bent crystals in 1987. The presented data is the first manifestation of this new physical phenomenon in experiment.
An enhancement to the T-980 bent crystal collimation experiment at the Tevatron has been completed. The enhancement was the installation of a pixel telescope inside the vacuum-sealed beam pipe of the Tevatron. The telescope is comprised of six CMS PSI46 pixel plaquettes, arranged as three stations of horizontal and vertical planes, with the CAPTAN system for data acquisition and control. The purpose of the pixel telescope is to measure beam profiles produced by bent crystals under various conditions. The telescope electronics inside the beam pipe initially were not adequately shielded from the…
The LHC crystal-based collimation system is mainly addressed. A CRYSTAL simulation code for particle tracking in crystals is introduced. Its essence consists in both adequate and fast sampling of proton trajectories in crystals which is crucial for both correct description of experiments and quantitative prediction of new effects. The H8 single-pass experiment at the CERN SPS as well as 7 TeV proton deflection by a bent crystal at the LHC are simulated. We predict the existence of dechanneling peaks corresponding to the planar channeling oscillations as well as describe the possibility of thei…
New crystal technique - array of bent strips and a fan-type reflector, based on thin straight plates - have been used for research of extraction and collimation a circulating beam in the U-70 accelerator at the energy 50 GeV and 1.3 GeV. It is shown, that new devices can effectively steer a beam in a wide energy range. For protons with energy 50 GeV efficiency of extraction and collimation about 90 % has been achieved which is record for this method. Reduction of particle losses in 2-3 times was observed also in accelerator at application of different crystals in comparison with the usual one-…
Ideas of use the particle channeling in bent crystals for steer the beams have been checked up and advanced in many experiments. However, until now, this method of beam formation has limitations in application, since the channeling process involves beam particles with low angular divergence, limited by the angle of Lindhard. Here we test at the U-70 accelerator two crystal devices, the focusing crystal and multistrip crystal, which expand the boundaries of application of bent crystals at accelerators.
We show that theory predictions for volume reflection in bent crystals agree with recent experimental data. This makes possible to predict volume reflection angle and efficiency in a broad range of energy for various crystals. A simple formula is proposed for volume reflection efficiency. We derive the physical limits for application of crystal reflection at high-energy accelerators where it may help beam collimation.
Influence of volume capture on a process of volume reflection of ultrarelativistic particles moving in bent single crystals was considered analytically. Relations describing various distributions of particles involving in the process, the probability of volume capture and behavior of channeling and dechanneling fractions of a beam were obtained. Results of study will be useful at creation of multicrystal devices for collimation and extraction of beams on modern and future accelerators.
Collimation systems in particle accelerators are designed to dispose of unavoidable losses safely and efficiently during beam operation. Different roles are required for different types of accelerator. The present state of the art in beam collimation is exemplified in high-intensity, high-energy superconducting hadron colliders, like the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where stored beam energies reach levels up to several orders of magnitude higher than the tiny energies required to quench cold magnets. Collimation systems are essential systems for the daily operation of these modern machine…
We present theory for coherent effects observed in crystal collimation experiments that is in good quantitative agreement with RHIC and Tevatron data. We show that coherent scattering in a bent crystal strongly amplifies beam diffusion, with an effective radiation length shortened by orders of magnitude compared to amorphous material. This coherent scattering could replace the traditional amorphous scattering in accelerator collimation systems. We predict that crystal collimation for negative particles can be as strong as for positives, unlike with channeling effect. This opens a principle way…
Recently it was proposed to apply a bent single crystal with decreasing curvature instead of uniform bending for improvement of extraction and collimation of a circulating beam in particle accelerators. It is shown, that with the help of the developed devices it is possible to carry out also high energy beam focusing. The mathematical description of this process is proposed.
This report overviews studies accomplished in the U70 proton synchrotron of IHEP-Protvino during the recent two decades. Major attention is paid to a routine application of bent crystals for beam extraction from the machine. It has been confirmed experimentally that efficiency of beam extraction with a crystal deflector of around 85% is well feasible for a proton beam with intensity up to 1012 protons per cycle. Another trend is to use bent crystals for halo collimation in a high energy collider. New promising options emerge for, say, LHC and ILC based on the "volume reflection" effect, which …
MERLIN is an accelerator physics library written in C++ which can be used for a range of accelerator tracking simulations, including collimation in hadron colliders. Recently MERLIN has been upgraded to provide a robust tool for HL-LHC collimation, including the treatment of composite materials, and a hollow electron lens process. We describe the features of MERLIN used in collimation simulations.

Crystal systems extract 70 GeV protons from IHEP main ring with efficiency of 85% at intensity of 1.E12, basing on multi-pass mechanism of channeling proposed theoretically and realised experimentally …
The back-streaming neutrons from the spallation target at CSNS are very intense, and can pose serious damage problems for the devices in the accelerator-target interface region. To tackle the problems, a possible scheme for this region was studied, namely a specially designed optics for the proton beam line produces two beam waists, and two collimators are placed at the two waist positions to maximize the collimation effect of the back-streaming neutrons. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations with the beams in the two different CSNS phases show the effectiveness of the collimation system, and the r…
It is shown that multiple volume reflections from different planes of one bent crystal becomes possible when particles move at a small angle with respect to a crystal axis. Such a Multiple Volume Reflection makes it possible to increase the particle deflection angle inside one crystal by more than four times and can be used to increase the efficiency of beam extraction and collimation at the LHC and many other accelerators.

The collimation system is an essential part of the design of any high-power accelerator. Its functions include protection of components from accidental and intentional energy deposition, reduction of backgrounds, and beam diagnostics. Conventional multi-stage systems based on scatterers and absorbers offer robust shielding and efficient collection of losses. Two complementary concepts have been proposed to address some of the limitations of conventional systems: channeling and volume reflection in bent crystals and collimation with hollow electron beams. The main focus of this paper is the hol…
In computer simulations we find that particles can scatter in bent crystal lattices with effective radiation length down to a few micron or 300-700 times shorter than in the corresponding amorphous materials. We derive a theoretical estimate independent of energy for the effective radiation length that is in agreement with our simulations for C, Si, Ge, and W crystal lattices. We show that in the ongoing collimation experiment at the Tevatron a crystal-based smart scattering material could outperform a channeling crystal in efficiency of collimation reducing the local background rate by a fact…
Crystal lattice can trap and channel particle beams along major crystallographic directions. In a bent crystal, the channelled particles follow the bend. This makes a basis for an elegant technique of beam steering by means of bent channelling crystals, experimentally demonstrated from 3 MeV to 1 TeV. This technique was strongly developed in recent studies at CERN, FNAL, IHEP, and BNL, and can lead to interesting applications also at the LHC, such as crystal collimation making a collider cleaner by an order of magnitude. We review recent developments in the field and show outlook for the futur…
For the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS/RCS), the electron emission plays an important role in the accelerator limitation. The interactions between the proton beam and the stripping foil were studied, and the electron scattering processes were simulated by the ORBIT and FLUKA codes. Then, the electron energy distribution and the electron yielding rate can be given. Furthermore, the interactions between the proton beam and the collimation system were studied, and the electron scattering processes were simulated. Then, the energy distribution of the primary…
Basing on experiments at SLAC, MAMI, CERN, and on Monte Carlo simulations, we assess the physical limits on efficiency and reachable angles of electron deflection in bent crystals in the energy range from sub-GeV to sub-TeV. We find that applications of electron channeling for beam deflection are possible, limited by maximal deflection angle of 2-3 mrad at sub-GeV, 1-2 mrad at multi-GeV, and 0.5-1 mrad at sub-TeV energy. This opens opportunities for crystal-assisted electron beam extraction from accelerator rings.
The University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) has operated traditionally in the regime of strong space-charge dominated beam transport, but small-current beams are desirable to significantly reduce the direct (incoherent) space-charge tune shift as well as the tune depression. This regime is of interest to model space-charge effects in large proton and ion rings similar to those used in nuclear physics and spallation neutron sources, and also for nonlinear dynamics studies of lattices inspired on the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). We review the definition of space-charge intensit…

The bent crystals are applied on large accelerators to deflect particle beams in process of extraction and collimation. Recently the proposals of fixed target researches in the LHC are formulated. For realization of this program not only deflection but also focusing the LHC beam by bent crystals can be used. In the given work experimental results on 50 GeV proton beam focusing with the help of novel crystal device are reported. The positive property of this device is opportunity to work near the circulating beam of an accelerator, including the LHC.
An investigation on stochastic deflection of high-energy negatively charged particles in a bent crystal was carried out. On the basis of analytical calculation and numerical simulation it was shown that it exists a maximum angle at which most of the beam is deflected. The existence of a maximum, which is taken in the correspondence of the optimal radius of curvature, is a novelty with respect to the case of positively charged particles, for which the deflection angle can be freely increased by increasing the crystal length. This difference has to be ascribed to the stronger contribution of inc…
This paper presents simulations of the trajectories of high-energy ions through several bent crystal layers. At certain layer alignments volume reflection occurs from each layer and the resultant multiple volume reflection angle is correspondingly increased, along with the range of entrance angles over which ions undergo volume reflection. Another feature is that the range of entrance angles for which bent crystal channeling occurs is also increased in passing through several bent layers. The use of several bent crystal layers to produce multiple volume reflection provides an alternative appro…
As part of an upgrade to the LHC collimation system, 8 TCTP and 1 TCSG collimators are proposed to replace existing collimators in the collimation system. In an effort to review all equipment placed in the accelerator complex for potential side effects due to collective effects and beam-equipment interactions, beam coupling impedance simulations are carried out in both the time-domain and frequency-domain of the full TCTP design. Particular attention is paid to trapped modes that may induce beam instabilities and beam-induced heating due to cavity modes of the device.
This paper presents the physical background for particle extraction from IHEP accelerator using short bent silicon crystals, analyses the results of the studies, considers in detail the regime of simultaneous work of crystal extraction and several internal targets. It is experimentally shown that the use of short crystals allows the extraction of beams with intensity of 10e12 proton/cycle with efficiency of 85%.
A surprising small dechanneling length was observed at (111) channeling of ultrarelativistic electrons in a 60 $μ$m thick silicon single crystal with a bending radius of 0.15 m. The experiments were conducted at beam energies between 3.35 and 14 GeV at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET at SLAC, USA). It is shown in this paper that the small dechanneling lengths can well be reproduced with a modified Fokker-Planck equation for plane crystals in which a crystal bending has been heuristically introduced. Encouraged by this result experiments have been reconsidered wh…
While particle beam steering (and in particular, "scraping") in accelerators by bent channeling crystals is an established technique extensively tested at IHEP Protvino and other major high-energy labs, an interesting question is how one could improve channeling capabilities by applying modern nanotechnology. Theoretical research of nanotube channeling was in progress over recent years. In this work, we assess potential benefits from nanotube channeling for real accelerator systems. We report simulation studies of channeling in nanostructured material (carbon SWNT and MWNT) tested for possible…
Particles passing through a crystal under planar channeling experience transverse oscillations in their motion. As channeled particles approach the atomic planes of a crystal, they are likely to be dechanneled. This effect was used in ion-beam analysis with MeV energy. We studied this effect in a bent crystal for positive and negative particles within a wide range of energies in sight of application of such crystals at accelerators. We found the conditions for the appearance or not of channeling oscillations. Indeed a new kind of oscillations, strictly related to the motion of over-barrier par…

An investigation on the mechanism of relaxation of axially confined 400 GeV/c protons to planar channeling in a bent crystal was carried out at the extracted line H8 from CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The experimental results were critically compared to computer simulations, showing a good agreement. We firmly individuated a necessary condition for the exploitation of axial confinement or its relaxation for particle beam manipulation in high-energy accelerators. We demonstrated that with a short bent crystal, aligned with one of its main axis to the beam direction, it is possible to realize e…
Several studies are on-going at CERN in the framework of the Physics Beyond Collider study group, with main aim of broadening the physics research spectrum using the available accelerator complex and infrastructure. The possibility to design a layout that allows fixed-target experiments in the primary vacuum of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), without the need of a dedicated extraction line, is included among these studies. The principle of the layouts presented in this paper is to deflect beam halo protons on a fixed-target placed in the LHC primary vacuum, by means of bent crystals (i.e…
The possibility of extracting highly energetic particles from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) by means of silicon bent crystals has been explored since the 1990's. The channelling effect of a bent crystal can be used to strongly deflect primary protons and eject them from the synchrotron. Many studies and experiments have been carried out to investigate crystal channelling effects. The extraction of 120 and 270 GeV proton beams has already been demonstrated in the SPS with dedicated experiments located in the ring. Presently in the SPS, the UA9 experiment is performing studies to evaluate t…
We present a model which describes proton scattering data from ISR to Tevatron energies, and which can be applied to collimation n high energy accelerators, such as the LHC and FCC. Collimators remove beam halo particles, so that they do not impinge on vulnerable regions of the machine, such as the superconducting magnets and the experimental areas. In simulating the effect of the collimator jaws it is crucial to model the scattering of protons at small momentum transfer~$t$,as these protons can subsequently survive several turns of the ring before being lost. At high energies these soft proce…

In this paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the additio…
Channeling of high-energy particles in straight and bent multi-wall nanotubes (MWNT) has been studied in computer simulations and compared to the channeling properties of single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) and bent crystal lattices. It is demonstrated that MWNT can efficiently channel positively-charged high-energy particles trapped between the walls of MWNT. Bending dechanneling in MWNT has been computed as a function of the particle momentum to nanotube curvature radius ratio, $pv/R$. It is found that a bent MWNT can steer a particle beam with bending capabilities similar to those of bent silicon …

The UA9 experimental equipment was installed in the CERN-SPS in March '09 with the aim of investigating crystal assisted collimation in coasting mode. Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the deflected beam. Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the defl…
The design and performance of a novel crystal deflector for proton beams are reported. A silicon crystal was used to channel and extract 70 GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator in Protvino with an efficiency of 85%, as measured for a beam of ~1e12 protons directed towards crystals of ~2 mm length in spills of ~2 s duration. Experimental data agree with the theoretically predicted Monte Carlo results for channeling. The technique allows one to manufacture a very short deflector along the beam direction (2 mm). Consequently, multiple encounters of circulating particles with the crystal are poss…
In synchrotron machines, the beam extraction is accomplished by a combination of septa and kicker magnets which deflect the beam from an accelerator into another. Ideally the kicker field must rise/fall in between the beam bunches. However, in reality, an intentional beam-free time region (aka "notch") is created on the beam pulse to assure that the beam can be extracted with minimal losses. In the case of the Fermilab Booster, the notch is created in the ring near injection energy by the use of fast kickers which deposit the beam in a shielded collimation region within the accelerator tunnel.…
The investigation of beam halo transverse distributions is important for the understanding of beam losses and the control of backgrounds in Future Linear Colliders (FLC). A novel in vacuum diamond sensor (DSv) scanner with four strips has been designed and developed for the investigation of the beam halo transverse distributions and also for the diagnostics of Compton recoil electrons after the interaction point (IP) of ATF2, a low energy (1.3 GeV) prototype of the final focus system for the ILC and CLIC linear collider projects. Using the DSv, a dynamic range of $\sim10^6$ has been successful…
