An investigation on stochastic deflection of high-energy negatively charged particles in a bent crystal was carried out. On the basis of analytical calculation and numerical simulation it was shown that it exists a maximum angle at which most of the beam is deflected. The existence of a maximum, which is taken in the correspondence of the optimal radius of curvature, is a novelty with respect to the case of positively charged particles, for which the deflection angle can be freely increased by increasing the crystal length. This difference has to be ascribed to the stronger contribution of incoherent scattering affecting the dynamics of negative particles that move closer to atomic nuclei and electrons. We therefore identified the ideal parameters for the exploitation of axial confinement for negatively charged particle beam manipulation in future high-energy accelerators, e.g., ILC or muon colliders.
Basing on experiments at SLAC, MAMI, CERN, and on Monte Carlo simulations, we assess the physical limits on efficiency and reachable angles of electron deflection in bent crystals in the energy range from sub-GeV to sub-TeV. We find that applications of electron channeling for beam deflection are possible, limited by maximal deflection angle of 2-3 mrad at sub-GeV, 1-2 mrad at multi-GeV, and 0.5-1 mrad at sub-TeV energy. This opens opportunities for crystal-assisted electron beam extraction from accelerator rings.
This paper presents simulations of the trajectories of high-energy ions through several bent crystal layers. At certain layer alignments volume reflection occurs from each layer and the resultant multiple volume reflection angle is correspondingly increased, along with the range of entrance angles over which ions undergo volume reflection. Another feature is that the range of entrance angles for which bent crystal channeling occurs is also increased in passing through several bent layers. The use of several bent crystal layers to produce multiple volume reflection provides an alternative appro…
An investigation on stochastic deflection of high-energy charged particles in a bent crystal was carried out. In particular, we investigated the deflection efficiency under axial confinement of both positively and negatively charged particles as a function of the crystal orientation, the choice of the bending plane, and of the charge sign. Analytic estimations and numerical simulations were compared with dedicated experiments at the H4 secondary beam line of SPS North Area, with 120 GeV/$c$ electrons and positrons. In the work presented in this article, the optimal orientations of the plane of…
Incoherent bremsstrahlung by high-energy particles in crystal is due to the thermal spread of atoms in relation to their equilibrium positions in the lattice. The simulation procedure developed earlier for the incoherent radiation is applied to the case of the electrons and positrons motion in the sinusoidally bent crystal. The results of simulation are in agreement with the data of recent experiments carried out at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The possibility of use of the sinusoidally bent crystals as undulators is discussed.
The bremsstrahlung cross section for relativistic electrons in a crystal is split into the sum of coherent and incoherent parts (the last is due to a thermal motion of atoms in the crystal). Although the spectrum of incoherent radiation in crystal is similar to one in amorphous medium, the incoherent radiation intensity could demonstrate substantial dependence on the crystal orientation due to the electrons' flux redistribution in the crystal. In the present paper we apply our method of the incoherent bremsstrahlung simulation developed earlier to interpretation of some recent experimental res…
Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for 855 MeV and 6.3 GeV electrons channeling in silicon single crystals at circular bent (111) planes. The aim was to identify critical experimental parameters which effect the volume-deflection and volume-capture characteristics. To these belongs the angular alignment of the crystal with respect to the nominal beam direction. The continuum potential picture has been utilized. The simulation results were compared with experiments. It turns out that the assumption of an anticlastic bending of the crystal, bent on the principle of the quasi-mosaic effe…
The quasi-channeling of positive and negative relativistic particles in a bent crystal is studied using the classical deflection function. It was shown that the potential scattering in a central field of bounded ring-like potentials may produce the ``reflected'' and ``refracted'' fractions of scattered particles. For particles with positive charge the ``reflected'' fraction is mainly presented; at the same time we predict that for particles with negative charge the ``refracted'' fraction should dominate. The effect of ``empty core'' for central scattering is also discussed. The average deflect…
The method of relativistic molecular dynamics is applied for accurate computational modelling and numerical analysis of the channelling phenomena for 855 MeV electrons in bent oriented silicon (111) crystal. Special attention is devoted to the transition from the axial channelling regime to the planar one in the course of the crystal rotation with respect to the incident beam. Distribution in the deflection angle of electrons and spectral distribution of the radiation emitted are analysed in detail. The results of calculations are compared with the experimental data collected at the MAinzer MI…
The coherent process of particle deflection by aligned atomic strings and planes of oriented crystals is accompanied by incoherent scattering by atomic cores. While the coherent particle deflection, described by the axial or planar averaged potential, becomes more and more classical at high energies, the incoherent scattering of relativistic particles remains essentially quantum. Though the latter reminds the scattering by atoms of amorphous medium at high enough momentum transfers, at the smallest ones the incoherent scattering process in crystals experiences some modification by the influenc…
It is shown that multiple volume reflections from different planes of one bent crystal becomes possible when particles move at a small angle with respect to a crystal axis. Such a Multiple Volume Reflection makes it possible to increase the particle deflection angle inside one crystal by more than four times and can be used to increase the efficiency of beam extraction and collimation at the LHC and many other accelerators.
The volume coherent deflection of high-energy positive and negative particles in uniformly bent crystals is studied. The general analysis of potential scattering shows that the standard screening potential for a large class of collisions can cause the volume refraction for negative particles (antiprotons, electrons) instead of the volume reflection for positive particles (proton, positrons).
The LHC crystal-based collimation system is mainly addressed. A CRYSTAL simulation code for particle tracking in crystals is introduced. Its essence consists in both adequate and fast sampling of proton trajectories in crystals which is crucial for both correct description of experiments and quantitative prediction of new effects. The H8 single-pass experiment at the CERN SPS as well as 7 TeV proton deflection by a bent crystal at the LHC are simulated. We predict the existence of dechanneling peaks corresponding to the planar channeling oscillations as well as describe the possibility of thei…
We report on the measurements of the spectra of gamma radiation generated by 855 MeV electrons in bent silicon and germanium crystals at MAMI (MAinzer MIkrotron). The crystals were 15 μm thick along the beam direction to ensure high deflection efficiency. Their (111) crystalline planes were bent by means of a piezo-actuated mechanical holder, which allowed to remotely change the crystal curvature. In such a way it was possible to investigate the radiation emitted under planar channeling and volume reflection as a function of the curvature of the crystalline planes. We show that using volume re…
The scattering of fast charged particles in a thin crystalline undulator is considered under conditions when all particles of the beam undergo above-barrier motion with respect to the bent crystalline atomic planes. The consideration is based on the analysis of the particles motion in the continuous potential field of the bent crystal atomic planes and on the simulation of the scattering process taking into account the influence of incoherent effects in scattering on the particles motion. The possibility of manifestation of the effect of multiple volume reflection from bent crystalline atomic …
For volume reflection process in a bent crystal, exact analytic expressions for positively- and negatively-charged particle trajectories are obtained within a model of parabolic continuous potential in each interplanar interval, with the neglect of incoherent multiple scattering. In the limit of the crystal bending radius greatly exceeding the critical value, asymptotic formulas are obtained for the particle mean deflection angle in units of Lindhard's critical angle, and for the final beam profile. Volume reflection of negatively charged particles is shown to contain effects of rainbow scatte…

Crystal systems extract 70 GeV protons from IHEP main ring with efficiency of 85% at intensity of 1.E12, basing on multi-pass mechanism of channeling proposed theoretically and realised experimentally …
This paper provides an explanation of the key effects behind the deflection of ultra-relativistic electron beams by means of oriented quasi-mosaic Bent Crystals (qmBC). It is demonstrated that accounting for specific geometry of the qmBC and its orientation with respect to a collimated electron beam, its size and emittance is essential for an accurate quantitative description of experimental results on the beam deflection by such crystals. In an exemplary case study a detailed analysis of the recent experiment at the SLAC facility is presented. The methodology developed has enabled to understa…
The bent crystals are applied on large accelerators to deflect particle beams in process of extraction and collimation. Recently the proposals of fixed target researches in the LHC are formulated. For realization of this program not only deflection but also focusing the LHC beam by bent crystals can be used. In the given work experimental results on 50 GeV proton beam focusing with the help of novel crystal device are reported. The positive property of this device is opportunity to work near the circulating beam of an accelerator, including the LHC.
For a particle traversing a bent crystal in the regime of volume reflection we evaluate the probability of interaction with atomic nuclei. Regardless of the continuous potential shape, this probability is found to differ from the corresponding value in an amorphous target by an amount proportional to the crystal bending radius, and the particle deflection angle. Based on this result, we evaluate the rate of inelastic nuclear interactions, and the final beam angular dispersion due to multiple Coulomb scattering. The theoretical predictions are compared with the experiments. The impact of multip…

In this paper, we discuss an experimental layout for the two-crystals scenario at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. The research focuses on a fixed target setup at the circulating machine in a frame of the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) project at CERN. The UA9 experiment at the SPS serves as a testbench for the proof of concept, which is planning to be projected onto the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) scale. The presented in the text configuration was used for the quantitative characterization of the deflected particle beam by a pair of bent silicon crystals. For the first time in …
Under coherent interactions, particles undergo correlated collisions with the crystal lattice and their motion result in confinement in the fields of atomic planes, i.e. particle channeling. Other than coherently interacting with the lattice, particles also suffer incoherent interactions with individual nuclei and may leave their bounded motion, i.e., they de-channel. This latter is the main limiting factor for applications of coherent interactions in crystal-assisted particle steering. We experimentally investigated the nature of dechanneling of 120 GeV/c $e^{-}$ and $e^{+}$ in a bent silicon…
