Crystal lattice can trap and channel particle beams along major crystallographic directions. In a bent crystal, the channelled particles follow the bend. This makes a basis for an elegant technique of beam steering by means of bent channelling crystals, experimentally demonstrated from 3 MeV to 1 TeV. This technique was strongly developed in recent studies at CERN, FNAL, IHEP, and BNL, and can lead to interesting applications also at the LHC, such as crystal collimation making a collider cleaner by an order of magnitude. We review recent developments in the field and show outlook for the future.
Results obtained with a new Monte-Carlo code ChaS for channeling of 855 MeV electrons along the crystallographic plane (110) in a bent silicon crystal are presented. The dependence of the dechanneling length and the asymptotic acceptance of the channel on the crystal bending is studied.
The usage of channelling radiation arising from a high energy electron beam traversing a crystal for the production of an intense low emittance muon beam is investigated. The optimal energy and divergence of the electron beam are computed for few crystal types based on analytical expressions of the radiation spectrum and of the muon pair production cross section. It is shown that the required beam properties seem within reach and that the source performance may be comparable to other muon sources currently considered.
We present the results of numerical calculations of the channelling and undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. The periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator. We investigate the dependence of the intensities of both the ordinary channelling and the undulator radiations on the parameters of the periodically bent channel with simultaneous accoun…
The method of relativistic molecular dynamics is applied for accurate computational modelling and numerical analysis of the channelling phenomena for 855 MeV electrons in bent oriented silicon (111) crystal. Special attention is devoted to the transition from the axial channelling regime to the planar one in the course of the crystal rotation with respect to the incident beam. Distribution in the deflection angle of electrons and spectral distribution of the radiation emitted are analysed in detail. The results of calculations are compared with the experimental data collected at the MAinzer MI…
The possibility of extracting highly energetic particles from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) by means of silicon bent crystals has been explored since the 1990's. The channelling effect of a bent crystal can be used to strongly deflect primary protons and eject them from the synchrotron. Many studies and experiments have been carried out to investigate crystal channelling effects. The extraction of 120 and 270 GeV proton beams has already been demonstrated in the SPS with dedicated experiments located in the ring. Presently in the SPS, the UA9 experiment is performing studies to evaluate t…
The evolution of a modulated positron beam in a planar crystal channel is investigated within the diffusion approach. A detailed description of the formalism is given. A new parameter, the demodulation length, is introduced, representing the quantitative measure of the depth at which the channelling beam preserves its modulation in the crystal. It is demonstrated that there exist crystal channels with the demodulation length sufficiently large for using the crystalline undulator as a coherent source of hard X rays. This finding is a crucial milestone in developing a new type of lasers radiatin…
The electromagnetic radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positrons channelling in a crystalline undulator is discussed. The crystalline undulator is a crystal whose planes are bent periodically with the amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Various conditions and criteria to be fulfilled for the crystalline undulator operation are established. Different methods of the crystal bending are described. We present the results of numeric calculations of spectral distributions of the spontaneous radiation emitted in the crystalline undulator and discuss the possibility to create th…
Ideas of use the particle channeling in bent crystals for steer the beams have been checked up and advanced in many experiments. However, until now, this method of beam formation has limitations in application, since the channeling process involves beam particles with low angular divergence, limited by the angle of Lindhard. Here we test at the U-70 accelerator two crystal devices, the focusing crystal and multistrip crystal, which expand the boundaries of application of bent crystals at accelerators.
Simulations of electron and positron channelling in a crystalline undulator with a small amplitude and a short period (A Kostyuk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 115503) were repeated by V G Bezchastnov, A V Korol and A V Solov'yov (J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 47 (2014) 195401)for the same parameter set but using another computer code, MBN Explorer, which implements a different model of projectile scattering by crystal atoms. The authors of the latter paper claim that their approach, in contrast to the one of the former paper, allows them to observe short-period undulator oscillations in plots…
Recently it was proposed to apply a bent single crystal with decreasing curvature instead of uniform bending for improvement of extraction and collimation of a circulating beam in particle accelerators. In the given paper created crystal devices with a variable curvature, realizing this idea are described. Results of measurement of curvature along a crystal plate are informed. It is shown, that with the help of the developed devices it is possible to carry out also high energy beam focusing. The mathematical description of this process is proposed.
IHEP Protvino has pioneered the wide practical use of bent crystals as optical elements in high-energy beams for beam extraction and deflection on permanent basis since 1989. In the course of IHEP experiments, crystal channeling has been developed into efficient instrument for particle steering at accelerators, working in predictable, reliable manner with beams of very high intensity over years. Crystal systems extract 70 GeV protons from IHEP main ring with efficiency of 85% at intensity of 1.E12, basing on multi-pass mechanism of channeling proposed theoretically and realised experimentally …
The efficiency of the beam extraction and collimation systems in circular accelerators with the use of the channeling effect in a bent crystal is determined. The dependences of the extraction efficiency on the geometrical parameters of the crystal (its length, thickness, and bending angle), the azimuthal location of the system components, and the offset of the septum or scraper are presented. The influence of crystal imperfections (amorphous layers, misorientation, and torsion) on the efficiency of the systems is considered, and their tolerances are proposed. It is shown that an extraction eff…
Photonic crystals have great potential for use as laser-driven accelerator structures. A photonic crystal is a dielectric structure arranged in a periodic geometry. Like a crystalline solid with its electronic band structure, the modes of a photonic crystal lie in a set of allowed photonic bands. Similarly, it is possible for a photonic crystal to exhibit one or more photonic band gaps, with frequencies in the gap unable to propagate in the crystal. Thus photonic crystals can confine an optical mode in an all-dielectric structure, eliminating the need for metals and their characteristic losses…
It has been shown that the use of a bent crystal with a variable curvature radius makes it possible to reduce the fraction of dechanneled particles by an order of magnitude. This effect enables the strong reduction of the particle density at the edge of a collimator or the partition of a septum upon the multiturn extraction of a beam from a ring accelerator. In particular, the beam extraction efficiency at the U-70 synchrotron and Large Hadron Collider can be increased to 95 and 99.65%, respectively.
The article presents an overview of the results obtained at U-70 accelerator of IHEP to use bent crystals for beam control of high energy protons. Considerable attention is paid to practical application of crystals to create new modes of beam extraction from the accelerator to ensure experiments on high energy physics. It was shown that with the crystal deflectors the efficiency reached ~ 90% with intensity up to 10^12 protons per cycle of U-70. The results of experiments on the use of crystals to enhance the effectiveness of the absorption of the unused beam, as well as the use of crystals fo…
New crystal technique - array of bent strips and a fan-type reflector, based on thin straight plates - have been used for research of extraction and collimation a circulating beam in the U-70 accelerator at the energy 50 GeV and 1.3 GeV. It is shown, that new devices can effectively steer a beam in a wide energy range. For protons with energy 50 GeV efficiency of extraction and collimation about 90 % has been achieved which is record for this method. Reduction of particle losses in 2-3 times was observed also in accelerator at application of different crystals in comparison with the usual one-…
We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the influence of the dechanneling process on the parameters of undulator radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. In either case the periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator which allows to generate X-ray and gamma-radiation. We propose the scheme for accurate quantitative treatment of the radiation in pre…
The development of high gradient acceleration and tight phase-space control of high power beams is a key element for future lepton and hadron colliders since the increasing demands for higher energy and luminosity significantly raise costs of modern HEP facilities. Atomic channels in crystals are known to consist of 10 -- 100 V/Å potential barriers capable of guiding and collimating a high energy beam providing continuously focused acceleration with exceptionally high gradients (TeV/m). However, channels in natural crystals are only angstrom-size and physically vulnerable to high energy intera…
Photonic crystal (PhC) defect cavities that support an accelerating mode tend to trap unwanted higher-order modes (HOMs) corresponding to zero-group-velocity PhC lattice modes at the top of the bandgap. The effect is explained quite generally from photonic band and perturbation theoretical arguments. Transverse wakefields resulting from this effect are observed in a hybrid dielectric PhC accelerating cavity based on a triangular lattice of sapphire rods. These wakefields are, on average, an order of magnitude higher than those in the waveguide-damped Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) copper cavit…
This report overviews studies accomplished in the U70 proton synchrotron of IHEP-Protvino during the recent two decades. Major attention is paid to a routine application of bent crystals for beam extraction from the machine. It has been confirmed experimentally that efficiency of beam extraction with a crystal deflector of around 85% is well feasible for a proton beam with intensity up to 1012 protons per cycle. Another trend is to use bent crystals for halo collimation in a high energy collider. New promising options emerge for, say, LHC and ILC based on the "volume reflection" effect, which …
This paper presents the physical background for particle extraction from IHEP accelerator using short bent silicon crystals, analyses the results of the studies, considers in detail the regime of simultaneous work of crystal extraction and several internal targets. It is experimentally shown that the use of short crystals allows the extraction of beams with intensity of 10e12 proton/cycle with efficiency of 85%.
A series of Silicon crystal undulator samples were produced based on the approach presented in PRL 90 (2003) 034801, with the periods of undulation from 0.1 mm to 1 mm, and the number of periods on the order of 10. The samples were characterized by X-rays, revealing the sine-like shape of the crystal lattice in the bulk. Next step in the characterization has been the channeling tests done with 70 GeV protons, where good channeling properties of the undulated Silicon lattice have been observed. The photon radiation tests of crystal undulators with high energy positrons are in progress on severa…
Crystal channeling technology has offered various opportunities in the accelerator community with a viability of ultrahigh gradient (TV/m) acceleration for future HEP collider. The major challenge of channeling acceleration is that ultimate acceleration gradients might require a high power driver in the hard x-ray regime (~ 40 keV). This x-ray energy exceeds those for x-rays as of today, although x-ray lasers can efficiently excite solid plasma and accelerate particles inside a crystal channel. Moreover, only disposable crystal accelerators are possible at such high externally excited fields w…

A number of next generation collider facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and far-future of the accelerator-based high energy physics. In this paper we offer a uniform approach to evaluation of various acc…
We present theory for coherent effects observed in crystal collimation experiments that is in good quantitative agreement with RHIC and Tevatron data. We show that coherent scattering in a bent crystal strongly amplifies beam diffusion, with an effective radiation length shortened by orders of magnitude compared to amorphous material. This coherent scattering could replace the traditional amorphous scattering in accelerator collimation systems. We predict that crystal collimation for negative particles can be as strong as for positives, unlike with channeling effect. This opens a principle way…
While particle beam steering (and in particular, "scraping") in accelerators by bent channeling crystals is an established technique extensively tested at IHEP Protvino and other major high-energy labs, an interesting question is how one could improve channeling capabilities by applying modern nanotechnology. Theoretical research of nanotube channeling was in progress over recent years. In this work, we assess potential benefits from nanotube channeling for real accelerator systems. We report simulation studies of channeling in nanostructured material (carbon SWNT and MWNT) tested for possible…
The design and performance of a novel crystal deflector for proton beams are reported. A silicon crystal was used to channel and extract 70 GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator in Protvino with an efficiency of 85%, as measured for a beam of ~1e12 protons directed towards crystals of ~2 mm length in spills of ~2 s duration. Experimental data agree with the theoretically predicted Monte Carlo results for channeling. The technique allows one to manufacture a very short deflector along the beam direction (2 mm). Consequently, multiple encounters of circulating particles with the crystal are poss…

For realization of this program not only deflection but also focusing the LHC beam by bent crystals can be used. In the given work experimental results on 50 GeV proton beam focusing with the help of novel crystal device are reported. The positive property of this device is opportunity to work near the circulating beam of an accelerator, including the LHC.
In this Letter, we present a study of the confinement properties of point-defect resonators in finite-size photonic-bandgap structures composed of aperiodic arrangements of dielectric rods, with special emphasis on their use for the design of cavities for particle accelerators. Specifically, for representative geometries, we study the properties of the fundamental mode (as a function of the filling fraction, structure size, and losses) via 2-D and 3-D full-wave numerical simulations, as well as microwave measurements at room temperature. Results indicate that, for reduced-size structures, aper…
Luminosity-driven channeling extraction has been observed for the first time in a 900 GeV study at the Fermilab Tevatron. This experiment, Fermilab E853, demonstrated that useful TeV level beams can be extracted from a superconducting accelerator during high luminosity collider operations without unduly affecting the background at the collider detectors. Multi-turn extraction was found to increase significantly the efficiency of the process. The beam extraction efficiency was about 25%. Studies of time dependent effects found that the turn-to-turn structure was governed mainly by accelerator b…
We show that theory predictions for volume reflection in bent crystals agree with recent experimental data. This makes possible to predict volume reflection angle and efficiency in a broad range of energy for various crystals. A simple formula is proposed for volume reflection efficiency. We derive the physical limits for application of crystal reflection at high-energy accelerators where it may help beam collimation.
Theoretical and experimental studies of PXR and diffracted radiation of an oscillator in crystals combined with the development of VFEL generators with photonic crystals give a promising basis for creation of X-ray and THz sources using the same table-top accelerator. Multi-modal medical facility can be developed on the basis of one dedicated table-top electron accelerator of some tens of MeV energy. Such a system could find a lot of applications in medical practice and biomedical investigations.
This project proposes to reuse the DAFNE accelerator complex for producing a high intensity (up to 10^10), high-quality beam of high-energy (up to 500 MeV) positrons for HEP experiments, mainly - but not only - motivated by light dark particles searches. Such a facility would provide a unique source of ultra-relativistic, narrow-band and low-emittance positrons, with a high duty factor, without employing a cold technology, that would be an ideal facility for exploring the existence of light dark matter particles, produced in positron-on-target annihilations into a photon+missing mass, and usin…
To be useful for most scientific and medical applications, compact particle accelerators will require much higher average current than enabled by current architectures. For this purpose, we propose a photonic crystal architecture for a dielectric laser accelerator, referred to as a multi-input multi-output silicon accelerator (MIMOSA), that enables simultaneous acceleration of multiple electron beams, increasing the total electron throughput by at least one order of magnitude. To achieve this, we show that the photonic crystal must support a mode at the $Γ$ point in reciprocal space, with a no…

Laser-driven acceleration holds great promise for significantly improving accelerating gradient. However, scaling the conventional process of structure-based acceleration in vacuum down to optical wavelengths requires a substantially different kind of structure. We require an optical waveguide that (1) is constructed out of dielectric materials, (2) has transverse size on the order of a wavelength, and (3) supports a mode with speed-of-light phase velocity in vacuum. Photonic crystals--structures whose electromagnetic properties are spatially periodic--can meet these requirements. We discuss s…
The studies of crystal collimation in the experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Tevatron and in computer simulations reveal strong coherent effects observed in a very broad angular range. Our theory explains the effects by coherent scattering on the potential of bent crystal atomic planes, which amplifies beam diffusion in accelerator by orders of magnitude. This coherent scattering in bent crystal is being studied in a CERN SPS experiment. We present Monte Carlo predictions for the SPS and Tevatron experiments, and show the implications of the coherent scattering effect for cryst…
Influence of volume capture on a process of volume reflection of ultrarelativistic particles moving in bent single crystals was considered analytically. Relations describing various distributions of particles involving in the process, the probability of volume capture and behavior of channeling and dechanneling fractions of a beam were obtained. Results of study will be useful at creation of multicrystal devices for collimation and extraction of beams on modern and future accelerators.
In order to demonstrate acceleration of electrons to relativistic scales by an on chipdielectric laser accelerator (DLA), a ponderomotive focusing scheme capable of capturingand transporting electrons through nanometer-scale apertures over extended interactionlengths has been proposed. We present a Matlab-based numerical code (SHarD) utilizinga spatial harmonic expansion of the fields within the dielectric structure to simulate theevolution of the beam phase space distribution in this scheme. The code can be usedto optimize key-parameters for the accelerator performance such as the final energ…
Basing on experiments at SLAC, MAMI, CERN, and on Monte Carlo simulations, we assess the physical limits on efficiency and reachable angles of electron deflection in bent crystals in the energy range from sub-GeV to sub-TeV. We find that applications of electron channeling for beam deflection are possible, limited by maximal deflection angle of 2-3 mrad at sub-GeV, 1-2 mrad at multi-GeV, and 0.5-1 mrad at sub-TeV energy. This opens opportunities for crystal-assisted electron beam extraction from accelerator rings.

This paper considers how the finite dimensions of a photonic crystal placed inside a resonator or waveguide affect the law of electron beam instability. The dispersion equations describing e-beam instability in the finite photonic crystal placed inside the resonator or waveguide (a bounded photonic crystal) are obtained. Two cases are considered: the conventionally considered case, when diffraction is suppressed, and the case of direct and diffracted waves having almost equal amplitudes. The instability law is shown to be responsible for increase of increment of instability and decrease of len…
Particles passing through a crystal under planar channeling experience transverse oscillations in their motion. As channeled particles approach the atomic planes of a crystal, they are likely to be dechanneled. This effect was used in ion-beam analysis with MeV energy. We studied this effect in a bent crystal for positive and negative particles within a wide range of energies in sight of application of such crystals at accelerators. We found the conditions for the appearance or not of channeling oscillations. Indeed a new kind of oscillations, strictly related to the motion of over-barrier par…

Solid-state or crystal acceleration has for long been regarded as an attractive frontier in advanced particle acceleration. However, experimental investigations of solid-state acceleration mechanisms which offer $\rm TVm^{-1}$ acceleration gradients have been hampered by several technological constraints. The primary constraint has been the unavailability of attosecond particle or photon sources suitable for excitation of collective modes in bulk crystals. Secondly, there are significant difficulties with direct high-intensity irradiation of bulk solids, such as beam instabilities due to cryst…

An investigation on stochastic deflection of high-energy negatively charged particles in a bent crystal was carried out. On the basis of analytical calculation and numerical simulation it was shown that it exists a maximum angle at which most of the beam is deflected. The existence of a maximum, which is taken in the correspondence of the optimal radius of curvature, is a novelty with respect to the case of positively charged particles, for which the deflection angle can be freely increased by increasing the crystal length. This difference has to be ascribed to the stronger contribution of inc…
A surprising small dechanneling length was observed at (111) channeling of ultrarelativistic electrons in a 60 $μ$m thick silicon single crystal with a bending radius of 0.15 m. The experiments were conducted at beam energies between 3.35 and 14 GeV at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET at SLAC, USA). It is shown in this paper that the small dechanneling lengths can well be reproduced with a modified Fokker-Planck equation for plane crystals in which a crystal bending has been heuristically introduced. Encouraged by this result experiments have been reconsidered wh…

It is shown that multiple volume reflections from different planes of one bent crystal becomes possible when particles move at a small angle with respect to a crystal axis. Such a Multiple Volume Reflection makes it possible to increase the particle deflection angle inside one crystal by more than four times and can be used to increase the efficiency of beam extraction and collimation at the LHC and many other accelerators.
TeV/m acceleration gradients using crystals as originally envisioned by R. Hofstadter, an early pioneer of HEP, have remained unrealizable. Fundamental obstacles that have hampered efforts on particle acceleration using bulk-crystals arise from collisional energy loss and emittance degradation in addition to severe beam disruption despite the favorable effect of particle channeling along interatomic planes in bulk. We aspire for the union of nanoscience with accelerator science to not only overcome these problems using nanostructured tubes to avoid direct impact of the beam on bulk ion-lattice…
