We present theory for coherent effects observed in crystal collimation experiments that is in good quantitative agreement with RHIC and Tevatron data. We show that coherent scattering in a bent crystal strongly amplifies beam diffusion, with an effective radiation length shortened by orders of magnitude compared to amorphous material. This coherent scattering could replace the traditional amorphous scattering in accelerator collimation systems. We predict that crystal collimation for negative particles can be as strong as for positives, unlike with channeling effect. This opens a principle way for efficient crystal steering of negative particles at accelerators. It can be demonstrated with antiproton crystal collimation at the Tevatron. We predict strong effects for the upcoming Tevatron experiment, for protons and antiprotons.
The studies of crystal collimation in the experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Tevatron and in computer simulations reveal strong coherent effects observed in a very broad angular range. Our theory explains the effects by coherent scattering on the potential of bent crystal atomic planes, which amplifies beam diffusion in accelerator by orders of magnitude. This coherent scattering in bent crystal is being studied in a CERN SPS experiment. We present Monte Carlo predictions for the SPS and Tevatron experiments, and show the implications of the coherent scattering effect for cryst…
Strong effect of beam coherent scattering ("reflection") in a field of bent crystal is observed in crystal collimation experiments performed with heavy ions and protons at RHIC and started at Tevatron collider. Detailed simulation using Monte Carlo code CATCH is done in order to understand the observations and relate them to the physics of beam coherent scattering in crystal. A.M. Taratin and S.A. Vorobiev predicted the effect of beam "volume reflection" in bent crystals in 1987. The presented data is the first manifestation of this new physical phenomenon in experiment.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) uses a multi-stage collimator system to absorb the growing halo of circulating beams to protect and ensure reliable operation of superconducting magnets. A similar system is planned for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). In anticipation of the LHC operation with high luminosity, research is being conducted to improve the collimation system. Studies have shown that one of the solutions to improve beam collimation is to use channeling in a short curved crystal, which acts as a primary collimator, throwing particles deep into the secondary collimator by channeling…
New crystal technique - array of bent strips and a fan-type reflector, based on thin straight plates - have been used for research of extraction and collimation a circulating beam in the U-70 accelerator at the energy 50 GeV and 1.3 GeV. It is shown, that new devices can effectively steer a beam in a wide energy range. For protons with energy 50 GeV efficiency of extraction and collimation about 90 % has been achieved which is record for this method. Reduction of particle losses in 2-3 times was observed also in accelerator at application of different crystals in comparison with the usual one-…
The T980 crystal collimation experiment is underway at the Tevatron to determine if this technique could increase 980 GeV beam-halo collimation efficiency at high-energy hadron colliders such as the Tevatron and the LHC. T980 also studies various crystal types and parameters. The setup has been substantially enhanced during the Summer 2009 shutdown by installing a new O-shaped crystal in the horizontal goniometer, as well as adding a vertical goniometer with two alternating crystals (O-shaped and multi-strip) and additional beam diagnostics. First measurements with the new system are quite enc…
The efficiency of the beam extraction and collimation systems in circular accelerators with the use of the channeling effect in a bent crystal is determined. The dependences of the extraction efficiency on the geometrical parameters of the crystal (its length, thickness, and bending angle), the azimuthal location of the system components, and the offset of the septum or scraper are presented. The influence of crystal imperfections (amorphous layers, misorientation, and torsion) on the efficiency of the systems is considered, and their tolerances are proposed. It is shown that an extraction eff…
The possibilities of the extraction and collimation of a circulating beam by a new method due to the reflection of particles in crystals with axial orientation were experimentally investigated in the Fall-2010 run at the U_70 synchrotron. Such crystals have positive features, because the axial potential is five times larger than the planar potential. It has been shown that the collimation efficiency can reach 90% due to axial effects in the crystal. Losses of the circulating beam on a collimator have been reduced by several times; this makes it possible to suppress the muon jet near the steel …
The T-980 bent crystal collimation experiment at the Tevatron has recently acquired substantial enhancements. First, two new crystals - a 16-strip one manufactured and characterized by the INFN Ferrara group and a quasi-mosaic crystal manufactured and characterized by the PNPI group. Second, a two plane telescope with 3 high-resolution pixel detectors per plane along with corresponding mechanics, electronics, control and software has been manufactured, tested and installed in the E0 crystal region. The purpose of the pixel telescope is to measure and image channeled (CH), volume-reflected (VR)…
The paper concerns the crystal based collimation suggested to upgrade the Large Hadron Collider collimation system. The issue of collimation efficiency dependence on the muscut angle characterizing nonparallelity of the channeling planes and crystal surface is mainly addressed. It is shown for the first time that even the preferable positive miscut could severely deteriorate the channeling collimation efficiency in the crystal collimation UA9 experiment. We demonstrate that the positive miscut influence can increase the nuclear reaction rate in the perfectly aligned crystal collimator by a fac…
Channeling crystal can serve as a primary scraper for the collimation system of the Large Hadron Collider. Crystal scraper works in efficient, predictable, reliable manner with beams of very high intensity over years, and meets technical requirements imposed on the LHC collimation system. If used as a primary element in the LHC collimation system, crystal would make the machine cleaner by a factor of 10 to 40.
It has been shown that the use of a bent crystal with a variable curvature radius makes it possible to reduce the fraction of dechanneled particles by an order of magnitude. This effect enables the strong reduction of the particle density at the edge of a collimator or the partition of a septum upon the multiturn extraction of a beam from a ring accelerator. In particular, the beam extraction efficiency at the U-70 synchrotron and Large Hadron Collider can be increased to 95 and 99.65%, respectively.
In computer simulations we find that particles can scatter in bent crystal lattices with effective radiation length down to a few micron or 300-700 times shorter than in the corresponding amorphous materials. We derive a theoretical estimate independent of energy for the effective radiation length that is in agreement with our simulations for C, Si, Ge, and W crystal lattices. We show that in the ongoing collimation experiment at the Tevatron a crystal-based smart scattering material could outperform a channeling crystal in efficiency of collimation reducing the local background rate by a fact…
The LHC crystal-based collimation system is mainly addressed. A CRYSTAL simulation code for particle tracking in crystals is introduced. Its essence consists in both adequate and fast sampling of proton trajectories in crystals which is crucial for both correct description of experiments and quantitative prediction of new effects. The H8 single-pass experiment at the CERN SPS as well as 7 TeV proton deflection by a bent crystal at the LHC are simulated. We predict the existence of dechanneling peaks corresponding to the planar channeling oscillations as well as describe the possibility of thei…
An enhancement to the T-980 bent crystal collimation experiment at the Tevatron has been completed. The enhancement was the installation of a pixel telescope inside the vacuum-sealed beam pipe of the Tevatron. The telescope is comprised of six CMS PSI46 pixel plaquettes, arranged as three stations of horizontal and vertical planes, with the CAPTAN system for data acquisition and control. The purpose of the pixel telescope is to measure beam profiles produced by bent crystals under various conditions. The telescope electronics inside the beam pipe initially were not adequately shielded from the…
Crystal lattice can trap and channel particle beams along major crystallographic directions. In a bent crystal, the channelled particles follow the bend. This makes a basis for an elegant technique of beam steering by means of bent channelling crystals, experimentally demonstrated from 3 MeV to 1 TeV. This technique was strongly developed in recent studies at CERN, FNAL, IHEP, and BNL, and can lead to interesting applications also at the LHC, such as crystal collimation making a collider cleaner by an order of magnitude. We review recent developments in the field and show outlook for the futur…
The understanding of the crystal collimation and extraction experiments performed in the recent decade at CERN SPS, FNAL Tevatron, IHEP U-70 and RHIC is reviewed from the standpoint of Monte Carlo simulations. The expectations for the LHC - the crystal efficiency and the requirements to a crystal - are outlined basing on the same computer model verified in the above experiments. Finally, we discuss key issues for the future experiments at CERN SPS and Tevatron aiming to reach the most efficient channeling and to bring these tests to the future LHC as close as possible.

This report overviews studies accomplished in the U70 proton synchrotron of IHEP-Protvino during the recent two decades. Major attention is paid to a routine application of bent crystals for beam extraction from the machine. It has been confirmed experimentally that efficiency of beam extraction with a crystal deflector of around 85% is well feasible for a proton beam with intensity up to 1012 protons per cycle. Another trend is to use bent crystals for halo collimation in a high energy collider. New promising options emerge for, say, LHC and ILC based on the "volume reflection" effect, which …

Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the deflected beam. Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the defl…

The equations, which describe generation of coherent radiation by a relativistic electron bunch moving in a photonic crystal, are obtained. Spectral-angular distribution of radiation and intensity of radiation in time-domain are derived. The interaction of the bunch electrons with the electromagnetic field induced by bunch itself at the initial stage of producing coherent radiation is shown contributing to the expression for the bunch current with the terms proportional to particle acceleration (proportional to interaction time and strength of electric field induced by bunch itself) along with…
When a high-energy electrons move in a crystal along one of the crystallographic planes the phenomenon of planar channeling is possible, in which the particles move in channels formed by the continuous potential of crystalline planes. Such particle motion in a crystal is conserved for most particles even for weak bending of crystalline planes of atoms. In [1-3] the process of channeled electrons radiation in such a device was considered. It was shown that the radiation spectrum of particles in the crystal in this case contains maxima associated with the period of oscillation of the channeled p…

In this paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the additio…
New mechanism of radiation emitted at channeling of a relativistic particle in a crystal is studied. Superposition of coherent radiation of the atoms in a crystal lattice which are excited by a channeling particle and radiation of the channeling particle itself is considered. It is shown that coherent radiation of the chain of oscillating atoms forms a resonance peak on the background of radiation of the channeling particle.
While particle beam steering (and in particular, "scraping") in accelerators by bent channeling crystals is an established technique extensively tested at IHEP Protvino and other major high-energy labs, an interesting question is how one could improve channeling capabilities by applying modern nanotechnology. Theoretical research of nanotube channeling was in progress over recent years. In this work, we assess potential benefits from nanotube channeling for real accelerator systems. We report simulation studies of channeling in nanostructured material (carbon SWNT and MWNT) tested for possible…
The design and performance of a novel crystal deflector for proton beams are reported. A silicon crystal was used to channel and extract 70 GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator in Protvino with an efficiency of 85%, as measured for a beam of ~1e12 protons directed towards crystals of ~2 mm length in spills of ~2 s duration. Experimental data agree with the theoretically predicted Monte Carlo results for channeling. The technique allows one to manufacture a very short deflector along the beam direction (2 mm). Consequently, multiple encounters of circulating particles with the crystal are poss…
Radiation spectrum from high energy $e^\pm$ in a bent crystal with arbitrary curvature distribution along the longitudinal coordinate is evaluated, based on the stationary phase approximation. For a uniformly bent crystal a closed-form expression for the spectrum is derived. Features such as sharp end of spectrum and volume reflection turnover at beginning of the spectrum are discussed. The coherence length in a bent crystal appears to depend only on the crystal geometry and not on the electron or photon energies, which is essential for interpretation of the results. Estimates of non-dipole ra…

In the present paper we investigate coherent bremsstrahlung of high energy electrons moving in a periodically deformed single crystal with a complex base. The formula for corresponding differential cross-section is derived for an arbitrary deformation field. The conditions are discussed under which the influence of the deformation is important. The case is considered in detail when the electron enters into the crystal at small angles with respect to a crystallographic axis. It is shown that in dependence of the parameters, the presence of the deformation can either enhance or reduce the bremss…
The influence of hypersonic waves excited in a single crystal is investigated on the process of electron-positron pair creation by high-energy photons. The coherent part of the corresponding differential cross-section is derived as a function of the amplitude and wave number of the hypersound. The values of the parameters are specified for which the latter affects remarkably on the pair creation cross-section. It is shown that under certain conditions the presence of hypersonic waves can result in enhancement of the process cross-section.
