In computer simulations we find that particles can scatter in bent crystal lattices with effective radiation length down to a few micron or 300-700 times shorter than in the corresponding amorphous materials. We derive a theoretical estimate independent of energy for the effective radiation length that is in agreement with our simulations for C, Si, Ge, and W crystal lattices. We show that in the ongoing collimation experiment at the Tevatron a crystal-based smart scattering material could outperform a channeling crystal in efficiency of collimation reducing the local background rate by a factor of 40.
Using the 1-BM-C beamline at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), we have performed the initial indirect x-ray imaging point-spread-function (PSF) test of a unique 88-mm diameter YAG:Ce single crystal of only 100-micron thickness. The crystal was bonded to a fiber optic plate (FOP) for mechanical support and to allow the option for FO coupling to a large format camera. This configuration resolution was compared to that of self-supported 25-mm diameter crystals, with and without an Al reflective coating. An upstream monochromator was used to select 17-keV x-rays from the broadband APS bending magn…
The paper is devoted to the study of the influence of crystalline lattice distortions due to external excitations (acoustic vibrations, temperature gradient, etc.) on the Quasicerenkov radiation. Equations describing Quasicerenkov radiation of charged particles in distorted crystals are derived. These equations are solved numerically. It is shown that certain types of lattice deformations may intensify the Quasicerenkov radiation by several times.
New type of radiation in crystals is predicted and investigated in computer simulation. It is shown that process of volume reflection of electrons and positrons in bent crystals is accomplished with high-power radiation of photons. Volume reflection radiation has intensity comparable with known channeling radiation, but it is less sensitive to entrance angle and sign of charge of a particle. Simulated spectra of radiation power are presented for 10 GeV and 200GeV particles.
When a high-energy electrons move in a crystal along one of the crystallographic planes the phenomenon of planar channeling is possible, in which the particles move in channels formed by the continuous potential of crystalline planes. Such particle motion in a crystal is conserved for most particles even for weak bending of crystalline planes of atoms. In [1-3] the process of channeled electrons radiation in such a device was considered. It was shown that the radiation spectrum of particles in the crystal in this case contains maxima associated with the period of oscillation of the channeled p…
We suggest a new type of radiation (acoustically induced radiation - AIR), which is generated by ultrarelativistic particles channeling in crystal along a crystal plane (or axis), which is bent by a transverse acoustic wave. The AIR mechanism allows to make an undulator with characteristics inaccessible in the undulators based on the motion of particles in the periodic magnetic fields and also in the field of the laser radiation. The intensity of AIR can easily be made larger than the intensity of the radiation in a linear crystal and can be varied in a wide range by varying the frequency and …
We report on the measurements of the spectra of gamma radiation generated by 855 MeV electrons in bent silicon and germanium crystals at MAMI (MAinzer MIkrotron). The crystals were 15 μm thick along the beam direction to ensure high deflection efficiency. Their (111) crystalline planes were bent by means of a piezo-actuated mechanical holder, which allowed to remotely change the crystal curvature. In such a way it was possible to investigate the radiation emitted under planar channeling and volume reflection as a function of the curvature of the crystalline planes. We show that using volume re…
Channeling properties and radiation spectra are studied on the grounds of numerical simulations for the 855 MeV electrons in a periodically bent diamond crystal. The bent crystalline profiles are shown to enhance the re-channeling of the projectiles and to produce distinct lines in the radiation spectra. The results obtained are analyzed and contrasted to the properties of the planar channeling and of the channeling in uniformly bent crystals.
We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crys…
Recent theoretical results on charged particle interaction with planarly oriented thin bent crystals are reviewed, with the emphasis on dynamics in the continuous potential. Influence of boundary conditions on the volume-reflected beam profile is discussed. Basic properties of coherent bremsstrahlung in a bent crystal are highlighted.
A periodically bent Si crystal is shown to efficiently serve for producing highly monochromatic radiation in a gamma-ray energy spectral range. A short-period small-amplitude bending yields narrow undulator-type spectral peaks in radiation from multi-GeV electrons and positrons channeling through the crystal. Benchmark theoretical results on the undulator are obtained by simulations of the channeling with a full atomistic approach to the projectile-crystal interactions over the macroscopic propagation distances. The simulations are facilitated by employing the MBN Explorer package for molecula…
The equations, which describe generation of coherent radiation by a relativistic electron bunch moving in a photonic crystal, are obtained. Spectral-angular distribution of radiation and intensity of radiation in time-domain are derived. The interaction of the bunch electrons with the electromagnetic field induced by bunch itself at the initial stage of producing coherent radiation is shown contributing to the expression for the bunch current with the terms proportional to particle acceleration (proportional to interaction time and strength of electric field induced by bunch itself) along with…
An idea of producing a focused parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) is presented. The PXR is emitted by relativistic charged particles channeling along a bent crystal. Then the PXR emitted from the whole length of the bent crystal is going to the focus. Some properties of focused PXR are estimated for typical experimental conditions and possible applications are discussed. The experiment for observation of focused PXR is proposed.
We predict peculiar changes in spectral distributions of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons in periodically bent crystals with variation of the bending amplitude. It is shown that the changes, being sensitive to the projectile energy, manifest themselves differently for negatively and positively charged projectiles. We demonstrate that the features observed are due to the interplay of different radiation mechanisms occurring in periodically bent crystals. The observations are important for design, practical realization and channeling experiments with periodically b…
Planar channeling of 855 MeV electrons and positrons in straight and bent tungsten (110) crystal is simulated by means of the \MBNExplorer software package. The results of simulations for a broad range of bending radii are analyzed in terms of the channel acceptance, dechanneling length, and spectral distribution of the emitted radiation. Comparison of the results with predictions of other theories as well as with the data for (110) oriented diamond, silicon and germanium crystals is carried out.
Results of numerical simulations of electron channeling and emission spectra are reported for straight and uniformly bent silicon crystal. The projectile trajectories are computed using the newly developed module [1] of the MBN Explorer package [2,3]. The electron channeling along Si(110) crystallographic planes is studied for the projectile energy 855 MeV.
Channeling and radiation are studied for the relativistic electrons and positrons passing through a Si crystal periodically bent with a small amplitude and a short period. Comprehensive analysis of the channeling process for various bending amplitudes is presented on the grounds of numerical simulations. The features of the channeling are highlighted and elucidated within an analytically developed continuous potential approximation. The radiation spectra are computed and discussed.
We suggest a new type of the undulator radiation which is generated by an ultra-relativistic particle channeled along a periodically bent crystallographic plane or axis. The electromagnetic radiation arises mainly due to the bending of the particle's trajectory, which follows the shape of the channel. The parameters of this undulator, which totally define the spectrum and the angular distribution of the radiation (both spontaneous and stimulated), depend on the type of the crystal and the crystallographic plane (axis), on the type of a projectile and its energy, and on the shape of the bent ch…

Radiation of charged particles passing through a set of equidistant ridges on the surface of a single crystal is calculated. The ridges are rectangular in shape, each of thickness of half of the particle trajectory period at planar channeling in a thick crystal. Positively charged particle entering the first ridge with angle smaller than the critical channeling angle is captured into channeling and changes the direction of its transversal velocity to reversed. Between the half-wave ridges the particle moves along a straight line. Passing through such set of half-wave crystal plates the particl…
We discuss the radiation generated by positrons channeling in a crystalline undulator. The undulator is produced by periodically bending a single crystal with an amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Different approaches for bending the crystal are described and the restrictions on the parameters of the bending are discussed. We also present numeric calculations of the spontaneous emitted radiation and estimate the conditions for stimulated emission. Our investigations show that the proposed mechanism could be an interesting source for high energy photons and is worth to be studi…
The mechanisms of spontaneous and induced radiation produced by relativistic particles passing through natural and photonic crystals are reviewed. The theory of Volume Free Electron Lasers based on spontaneous radiation in natural and photonic crystals is presented.
The process of radiation of 120-GeV positrons moving in a channeling regime in (011) plane of a single crystal was considered. At the beginning on the basis of the theory of nonlinear oscillations the trajectory of moving positrons at different initial conditions were derived. Then taking into account the nonlinearity of motion the distribution function over oscillation amplitudes of channeling particles was found. After this the intensity of radiation at different initial conditions was calculated with the help of two various methods. These results may be useful for comparison with experiment…
The formulas which describe the time evolution of radiation produced by a relativistic particle moving in a crystal are derived. It is shown that the conditions are realizable under which parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiation, transition radiation, diffracted radiation of the oscillator, surface quasi-Cherenkov and Smith-Purcell radiation last considerably longer than the time of the particle flight through the crystal. The results of carried out experiments demonstrate the presence of additional radiation peak appearing after the electron beam has left the photonic crystal.
High radiation hardness, chemical resistance, high temperature operation capabilities stimulate a growing interest to use diamond materials as detectors of ionizing radiation. Samples of CVD-diamond materials in sizes 12 square mm and 4 square mm with thickness from 50 microns up to 500 microns have been grown in INR RAS using a DC glow discharge in a mixture of gases CH4/H2 on molybdenum substrates.
The expressions for spectral-angular distribution of quasi-Cherenkov radiation emitted by a relativistic particle traversing a photonic crystal are derived. It is shown that for a relativistic particle, passing through a photonic crystal formed by periodically strained threads, the intensity of quasi-Cherenkov radiation emitted at small angles to the direction of particle motion, as contrasted to ordinary Cherenkov radiation, exhibits anisotropic properties as the the photon momentum is rotated about the direction of particle motion (as the crystal is rotated about the direction of particle mo…
Gamma radiation spectra of 1200 MeV electrons in the single crystals of the beryllium 1.2 mm thick, silicon 1.5 mm and 15.0 mm thick and tungsten 1.18 mm thick along of the crystallographic axes were measured. Also spectral-angular distributions of gamma radiation in the silicon single crystals 1.5 mm thick along of the crystallographic axes <100>, <110> and <111> were measured. On the basis of these measurements the radiation spectra for the different solid angles up to 6.97*10-6 sr were obtained. Gamma radiation spectra of the electrons with energy 1200, 600 and 300 MeV in the Si single crys…
The equations providing to describe generation process in FEL with varied parameters of diffraction grating (photonic crystal) are obtained. It is shown that applying diffraction gratings (photonic crystal) with the variable period one can significantly increase radiation output. It is mentioned that diffraction gratings (photonic crystal) can be used for creation of the dynamical wiggler with variable period in the system. This makes possible to develop double-cascaded FEL with variable parameters changing, which efficiency can be significantly higher that of conventional system.
Features of forward diffracted Parametric X-Radiation (PXR) were investigated at experiments with the 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI employing a 410 micrometer thick tungsten single crystal. Virtual photons from the electron field are diffracted by the (10-1) plane at a Bragg angle of 3.977 degree. Forward emitted radiation was analyzed at an energy of 40 keV with the (111) lattice planes of a flat silicon single crystal in Bragg geometry. Clear peak structures were observed in an angular scan of the tungsten single crystal. The results were analyzed with a model which descr…
The multiple scattering of ultra relativistic electrons in an amorphous matter leads to the suppression of the soft part of radiation spectrum (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect), and also can change essentially the angular distribution of the emitted photons. A similar effect must take place in a crystal for the coherent radiation of relativistic electron. The results of the theoretical investigation of angular distributions and polarization of radiation by a relativistic electron passing through a thin (in comparison with a coherence length) crystal at a small angle to the crystal axis ar…
The law of photon radiation from electron beams passing through a photonic crystal in the presence of an undulator is considered. The spectral-angular distribution and the time evolution of radiation is found. It is shown that the characteristics of the radiation intensity in time demonstrate oscillations due to the interference between undulator and parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiations.
We study the modifications of synchrotron radiation of charges in a storage ring as they are cooled. The pair correlation lengths between the charges are manifest in the synchrotron radiation and coherence effects exist for wavelengths longer than the coherence lengths between the charges. Therefore the synchrotron radiation can be used as a diagnostic tool to determine the state (gas, liquid, crystal) of the charged plasma in the storage ring. We show also that the total power of the synchrotron radiation is enormously reduced for crystallized beams. This opens the possibility of accelerating…
The results of numerical simulation of the channeling of ultra-relativistic 270 MeV electrons and positrons in a diamond crystal are presented. Using the MBN Explorer package, the trajectories of the have been determined of the particles incident on a 20 microns thick crystal along (110) crystallographic plane. The channeling parameters and radiation spectra of electrons and positrons have been computed for the cases of straight and periodically bent diamond crystals.
Classical radiation reaction is the effect of the electromagnetic field emitted by an accelerated electric charge on the motion of the charge itself. The self-consistent underlying classical equation of motion including radiation-reaction effects, the Landau-Lifshitz equation, has never been tested experimentally, in spite of the first theoretical treatments of radiation reaction having been developed more than a century ago. Here we show that classical radiation reaction effects, in particular those due to the near electromagnetic field, as predicted by the Landau-Lifshitz equation, can be me…
We use numerical modeling to study the features of parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) cooperative radiation arising when an electron bunch passes through a crystal (natural or artificial) under the conditions of dynamical diffraction of electromagnetic waves in the presence of shot noise. It is shown that in both Laue and Bragg diffraction cases, parametric radiation consists of two strong pulses: one emitted at small angles with respect to the particle velocity direction and the other emitted at large angles to it. Under Bragg diffraction conditions, the intensity of parametric radiation emitted at…
