We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crystal from the side of substrate or from the side of periodically bent crystal. The predictions made are important for design and practical realization of new crystalline undulators.
Channeling properties and radiation spectra are studied on the grounds of numerical simulations for the 855 MeV electrons in a periodically bent diamond crystal. The bent crystalline profiles are shown to enhance the re-channeling of the projectiles and to produce distinct lines in the radiation spectra. The results obtained are analyzed and contrasted to the properties of the planar channeling and of the channeling in uniformly bent crystals.
In this paper we present the results of a systematic numerical analysis of the channeling properties of electrons and positrons in oriented straight and periodically bent diamond(110) crystals. We analyse dependence of the intensity of the radiation emitted on the projectile energy as well as on the bending amplitude. The analysis presented is based on the grounds of accurate numerical simulations of the channeling process. The simulation parameters, such as the crystal orientation, thickness and bending parameters of the crystals as well as the energy of the projectiles, were chosen to match …
The results of numerical simulation of the channeling of ultra-relativistic 270 MeV electrons and positrons in a diamond crystal are presented. Using the MBN Explorer package, the trajectories of the have been determined of the particles incident on a 20 microns thick crystal along (110) crystallographic plane. The channeling parameters and radiation spectra of electrons and positrons have been computed for the cases of straight and periodically bent diamond crystals.
Line structures were observed for (110) planar channeling of electrons in a diamond single crystal even at a beam energy of 180 MeV. This observation motivated us to initiate dechanneling length measurements as function of the beam energy since the occupation of quantum states in the channeling potential is expected to enhance the dechanneling length. High energy loss signals, generated as a result of emission of a bremsstrahlung photon with about half the beam energy at channeling of 450 and 855 MeV electrons, were measured as function of the crystal thickness. The analysis required additiona…
This paper presents X-ray spectra of channeling radiation (CR) expected at the FAST (Fermi Accelerator Science and Technology) facility in Fermilab. Our purpose is to produce high brightness quasi-monochromatic X-rays in an energy range from 40 keV to 110 keV. We will use a diamond crystal and low emittance electrons with an energy of around 43 MeV. The quality of emitted X-rays strongly depends on parameters of the electron beam at the crystal. We present simulations of the beam optics for high brightness and high yield operations with bunch charges of 1 pC, 20 pC, and 200 pC. We estimate the…
Monte-Carlo simulation calculation have been performed for 855 MeV electrons channeling in (110) planes of a diamond single crystal. The continuum potential picture has been utilized. Both, the transverse potential and the angular distributions of the scattered electrons at screened atoms are based on the Doyle-Turner scattering factors which were extrapolated with the functional dependence of the Molière representation to large momentum transfers. Scattering cross-sections at bound electrons have been derived for energies less than 30 keV from the double differential cross-section as function…
This paper describes simulation analyses on beam and laser (X-ray)-driven accelerations in effective nanotube models obtained from Vsim and EPOCH codes. Experimental setups to detect wakefields are also outlined with accelerator facilities at Fermilab and NIU. In the FAST facility, the electron beamline was successfully commissioned at 50 MeV and it is being upgraded toward higher energies for electron accelerator R&D. The 50 MeV injector beamline of the facility is used for X-ray crystal-channeling radiation with a diamond target. It has been proposed to utilize the same diamond crystal for a…
Planar channeling of 855 MeV electrons and positrons in straight and bent tungsten (110) crystal is simulated by means of the \MBNExplorer software package. The results of simulations for a broad range of bending radii are analyzed in terms of the channel acceptance, dechanneling length, and spectral distribution of the emitted radiation. Comparison of the results with predictions of other theories as well as with the data for (110) oriented diamond, silicon and germanium crystals is carried out.

We discuss the features of a crystalline undulator of the novel type based on the effect of a planar channeling of ultra-relativistic electrons in a periodically bent crystals. It is demonstrated that an electron-based undulator is feasible in the tens of GeV range of the beam energies, which is noticeably higher than the energy interval allowed in a positron-based undulator. Numerical analysis of the main parameters of the undulator as well as the characteristics of the emitted undulator radiation is carried out for 20 and 50 GeV electrons channeling in diamond and silicon crystals along the …
Classical radiation reaction is the effect of the electromagnetic field emitted by an accelerated electric charge on the motion of the charge itself. The self-consistent underlying classical equation of motion including radiation-reaction effects, the Landau-Lifshitz equation, has never been tested experimentally, in spite of the first theoretical treatments of radiation reaction having been developed more than a century ago. Here we show that classical radiation reaction effects, in particular those due to the near electromagnetic field, as predicted by the Landau-Lifshitz equation, can be me…
Brilliance of novel gamma-ray Crystal-based Light Sources (CLS) that can be constructed through exposure of oriented crystals to beams of ultra-relativistic charged particles is calculated basing on the atomistic scale numerical modeling of the channeling process. In an exemplary case study, the brilliance of radiation emitted in a diamond-based Crystalline Undulator LS by a 10 GeV positron beam available at present at the SLAC facility is computed. Intesity of CU radiation in the photon energy range 10^0 - 10^1 MeV, which is inaccessible to conventional synchrotrons, undulators and XFELs, gre…
The feasibility of gamma-ray light sources based on the channeling phenomenon of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons in oriented crystals that are periodically bent with Small Amplitude and Short Period (SASP) is demonstrated by means of rigorous numerical modelling that accounts for the interaction of a projectile with all atoms of the crystalline environment. Numerical data on the spectral distribution, brilliance, number of photons and power of radiation emitted by 10 GeV electron and positron beams passing through diamond, silicon and germanium crystals are presented and analyzed. Th…
In ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments, accurate retrieval of time-resolved structural parameters, such as atomic coordinates and thermal displacement parameters, requires an accurate scattering model. Unfortunately, kinematical models are often inaccurate even for relativistic electron probes, especially for dense, oriented single crystals where strong channeling and multiple scattering effects are present. This article introduces and demonstrates dynamical scattering models tailored for quantitative analysis of UED experiments performed on single-crystal films. As a case study, …
