We suggest a new type of radiation (acoustically induced radiation - AIR), which is generated by ultrarelativistic particles channeling in crystal along a crystal plane (or axis), which is bent by a transverse acoustic wave. The AIR mechanism allows to make an undulator with characteristics inaccessible in the undulators based on the motion of particles in the periodic magnetic fields and also in the field of the laser radiation. The intensity of AIR can easily be made larger than the intensity of the radiation in a linear crystal and can be varied in a wide range by varying the frequency and the amplitude of the acoustic wave.
This paper is devoted to the investigation of the radiation energy losses of an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave. In such a system there are two essential mechanisms leading to the photon emission. The first one is the ordinary channeling radiation. This radiation is generated as a result of the transverse oscillatory motion of the particle in the channel. The second one is the acoustically induced radiation. This radiation is emitted because of the periodic bending of the particle's trajectory created…
We discuss radiation generated by positrons channeling in a crystalline undulator. The undulator is produced by periodically bending a single crystal with an amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Different approaches for bending the crystal are described and the restrictions on the parameters of the bending are established. We present the results of numeric calculations of the spectral distributions of the spontaneous emitted radiation and estimate the conditions for stimulated emission. Our investigations show that the proposed mechanism provides an efficient source for high ene…
An analytical expression is received for the effective interaction potential of a fast charged particle with the ionic crystal CsCl near the direction of axis <100> as a function of the temperature of the medium. A possibility of positron channeling in this potential is shown. By numerical analysis it is shown that the effective potential of axial channeling of positrons along the axis <100> of negatively charged ions practically does not depend on temperature of the media.
It is shown that the charged particles are refracted and reflected on the boundary of field free and laser field regions in vacuum. Simple and transparent estimates are given which show the possibility of channeling of charged and neutral particles having polarizability by strong electromagnetic field of certain laser bunches just as by the field of orientated crystalline planes and axes. These processes can be applied for production of femtosecond sliced electron bunches, for measurement their length and particle distribution as well as for production of femtosecond X-ray and terahertz pulses…
We present the experimental observation of the reduction of multiple scattering of high-energy positively charged particles during channeling in single crystals. According to our measurements the rms angle of multiple scattering in the plane orthogonal to the plane of the channeling is less than half that for non-channeled particles moving in the same crystal. In the experiment we use focusing bent single crystals. Such crystals have a variable thickness in the direction of beam propagation. This allows us to measure rms angles of scattering as a function of thickness for channeled and non-cha…
The parabolic approximation is developed for high energy charged particles scattering in a bent crystal with variable curvature. The general form of parabolic equation is received for atomic chains located along coordinate axis of orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system.
A refined equation for channe;ing particle diffusion in transverse energy taking into consideration large-angle scattering by nuclei is suggested. This equation is reduced to the Sturm-Liouville problem allowing one to reveal both the origin and the limitations of the dechanneling length notion. The values of the latter is evaluated for both positively and negatively charged particles of various energies. It is also demonstrated that the dechanneling length notion is inapplicable for the nuclear dechanneling process of positively charged particles, while the effective electron dechanneling len…
This paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of the new type of the undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave, as well as to the conditions limiting the observation of this phenomenon. This mechanism makes feasible the generation of electromagnetic radiation, both spontaneous and stimulated, emitted in a wide range of the photon energies, from X- up to gamma-rays.
A new Monte Carlo code for the simulation of the channeling of ultrarelativistic charged projectiles in single crystals is presented. A detailed description of the underlying physical model and the computation algorithm is given. First results obtained with the code for the channeling of 855 MeV electrons in Silicon crystal are presented. The dechanneling lengths for (100), (110) and (111) crystallographic planes are estimated. In order to verify the code, the dependence of the intensity of the channeling radiation on the crystal dimension along the beam direction is calculated. A good agreeme…
We analytically analyse the motion of a nonrelativistic charged particle in a cylindrical single capillary. The effective potential for interaction of a charged particle with the inner surface of a capillary is derived as a sum of the averaged atomic potential of the capillary wall surface and the induced potential defined by collective surface excitations. We have shown that under certain conditions this potential becomes attractive and may hold a particle in a bound state due to the surface excitations that defines a so-called surface channeling regime of motion. For the first time we have e…
The trapping of electrons in the ponderomotive potential wells, which governs a free electron laser or inverse free electron laser at high gain, is analogous to the channeling of charged particles by atomic planes of a crystal. A bent crystal is analogous to a period-tapered free electron laser. This analogy is different from the well-known one between channeling and undulator radiations.
It is shown that a narrow plane cut near the crystal surface considerably increases the probability of capture into the stable channeling motion of positively charged particles entering a crystal at angles smaller than a quarter of the critical channeling angle with respect to the crystal planes. At smallest incidence angles the capture probability reaches 99 percent. A pair of crystals with cuts bent in orthogonal planes allows to reach a 99.9 percent efficiency of single-pass deflection of a proton beam with an ultra small divergence. Conditions necessary for efficient single-pass deflection…
Channeling of high-energy particles in straight and bent multi-wall nanotubes (MWNT) has been studied in computer simulations and compared to the channeling properties of single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) and bent crystal lattices. It is demonstrated that MWNT can efficiently channel positively-charged high-energy particles trapped between the walls of MWNT. Bending dechanneling in MWNT has been computed as a function of the particle momentum to nanotube curvature radius ratio, $pv/R$. It is found that a bent MWNT can steer a particle beam with bending capabilities similar to those of bent silicon …
Radiation of charged particles passing through a set of equidistant ridges on the surface of a single crystal is calculated. The ridges are rectangular in shape, each of thickness of half of the particle trajectory period at planar channeling in a thick crystal. Positively charged particle entering the first ridge with angle smaller than the critical channeling angle is captured into channeling and changes the direction of its transversal velocity to reversed. Between the half-wave ridges the particle moves along a straight line. Passing through such set of half-wave crystal plates the particl…
In this article a new analytical description of the effective interaction potential for a charged particle in the field of two interfering laser beams is presented. The potential dependence on the lasers intensities, orientation and parameters of the particle entering the considered system is analyzed. It is shown for the case of arbitrary lasers crossing angle that for different values of projectile velocity the attracting potential becomes a scattering one so that the channel axes and borders interchange each other. In addition the projectile radiation spectral distribution is given and gene…
The process of scattering of fast charged particles in thin crystals is considered in the transitional range of thicknesses, between those at which the channeling phenomenon is not developed and those at which it is realized. The possibility is shown of application of the methods of geometrical optics for description of the scattering process. The dependence is studied of the total scattering cross-section of ultrarelativistic positrons on target thickness in this range of crystal thicknesses. In the case of ultrarelativistic particles channeling the possibility is shown of the existence of an…
The paper devoted to investigation of volume reflection and channeling processes of ultrarela- tivistic positive charged particles moving in germanium single crystals. We demonstrate that the choice of atomic potential on the basis of Hartree-Fock method and correct choice of Debye tem- perature allow us to describe the above mentioned processes in a good agreement with the recent experiments. Moreover, the presented in the paper universal form of equations for volume reflection gives true description of the process at a wide range of particle energies. Standing on this study we make predictio…
We predict peculiar changes in spectral distributions of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons in periodically bent crystals with variation of the bending amplitude. It is shown that the changes, being sensitive to the projectile energy, manifest themselves differently for negatively and positively charged projectiles. We demonstrate that the features observed are due to the interplay of different radiation mechanisms occurring in periodically bent crystals. The observations are important for design, practical realization and channeling experiments with periodically b…
We report the observation of the steering of 855 MeV electrons by bent silicon and germanium crystals at the MAinzer MIkrotron. 15 $μ$m long crystals, bent along (111) planes, were exploited to investigate orientational coherent effects. By using a piezo-actuated mechanical holder, which allowed to remotely change the crystal curvature, it was possible to study the steering capability of planar channeling and volume reflection vs. the curvature radius and the atomic number, Z. For silicon, the channeling efficiency exceeds 35 %, a record for negatively charged particles. This was possible due …
The quantization of the transverse motion energy in the continuous potentials of atomic strings and planes can take place under passage of fast charged particles through crystals. The energy levels for electron moving in axial channeling regime in a system of parallel atomic strings (for instance, [110] strings of a silicon crystal) are found in this work for the electron energy of order of several tens of MeV, when a total number of energy levels becomes large (up to several hundreds). High resolution of the spectral method used for energy level search has been demonstrated. Hence this method…
We study the phenomena of spin rotation and depolarization of high-energy particles in crystals in the range of high energies that will be available at Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). It is shown that these phenomena can be used to measure the anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived particles in this range of energies. We also demonstrate that the phenomenon of particle spin depolarization in crystals provides a unique possibility of measuring the anomalous magnetic moment of negatively-charged particles (e.g., beauty baryons), for which the channeling effect is ham…
An idea of producing a focused parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) is presented. The PXR is emitted by relativistic charged particles channeling along a bent crystal. Then the PXR emitted from the whole length of the bent crystal is going to the focus. Some properties of focused PXR are estimated for typical experimental conditions and possible applications are discussed. The experiment for observation of focused PXR is proposed.
We suggest a new type of the undulator radiation which is generated by an ultra-relativistic particle channeled along a periodically bent crystallographic plane or axis. The electromagnetic radiation arises mainly due to the bending of the particle's trajectory, which follows the shape of the channel. The parameters of this undulator, which totally define the spectrum and the angular distribution of the radiation (both spontaneous and stimulated), depend on the type of the crystal and the crystallographic plane (axis), on the type of a projectile and its energy, and on the shape of the bent ch…
Ultrarelativistic charged particles are predicted to emit hard electromagnetic radiation of undulator type while being channeled in a crystal with periodically bent crystallographic planes. The recently proposed crystalline undulator with the bending amplitude smaller than the distance between the bent planes and the bending period shorter than the period of channeling oscillations is far superior to what was proposed previously. In the same time, it is more challenging from the technical point of view because its bending period has to be in the sub-micron range. It is shown that a mixed cryst…
If an ultrarelativistic charged particle channels inside a single crystal with periodically bent crystallographic planes, it emits hard electromagnetic radiation of the undulator type. Due to similarity of its physical principles to the ordinary (magnetic) undulator, such a device is termed as the crystalline undulator. Recent development of a new Monte Carlo code ChaS made possible a detailed simulation of particle channeling and radiation emission in periodically bent crystals. According to recent findings, energy of the electron beam below 1 GeV is sufficient to observe the undulator effect…
A new scheme for amplification of coherent gamma rays is proposed. The key elements are crystalline undulators - single crystals with periodically bent crystallographic planes exposed to a high energy beam of charged particles undergoing channeling inside the crystals. The scheme consists of two such crystals separated by a vacuum gap. The beam passes the crystals successively. The particles perform undulator motion inside the crystals following the periodic shape of the crystallographic planes. Gamma rays passing the crystals parallel to the beam get amplified due to interaction with the part…
The crystalline undulator is a single crystal with periodically bent crystallographic planes. If ultrarelativistic charged particles channel through such a crystal, they emit hard radiation of undulator type. A crystalline undulator with a bending amplitude smaller than the distance between the bent planes and a bending period shorter than the period of channeling oscillations is proposed. Heretofore, it was believed that such a range of bending parameters was unsuitable for a crystalline undulator. This point of view is refuted. In fact, the undulator with a small amplitude and a short period…

Brilliance of novel gamma-ray Crystal-based Light Sources (CLS) that can be constructed through exposure of oriented crystals to beams of ultra-relativistic charged particles is calculated basing on the atomistic scale numerical modeling of the channeling process. Intesity of CU radiation in the photon energy range 10^0 - 10^1 MeV, which is inaccessible to conventional synchrotrons, undulators and XFELs, gre…
