The law of photon radiation from electron beams passing through a photonic crystal in the presence of an undulator is considered. The spectral-angular distribution and the time evolution of radiation is found. It is shown that the characteristics of the radiation intensity in time demonstrate oscillations due to the interference between undulator and parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiations.
We introduce a small-core air-guiding photonic crystal fiber whose cladding is made of improved air-silica photonic crystal with non-circular air holes placed in triangular lattice. The fiber achieves un-disturbed bandgap guidance over 350nm wavelength range.
This article concerns the design of antireflection structures which, placed on a photonic crystal surface, significantly diminish the fraction of energy lost to reflected waves. After a review of the classes of these structures proposed to date, a new method is presented in detail for the design of antireflection gratings operating in a wide range of angles of incidence. The proposed algorithm is illustrated by means of several examples, showing the advantages and limitations.
In this paper, a fully coherent radiation option with controllable polarization is proposed for Shanghai deep ultraviolet free electron laser (FEL) test facility. Intensive start-to-end simulation suggests that, the two crossed planar undulators which generate the horizontal and vertical linear polarized FEL respectively, should be placed as close as possible for avoiding the polarization performance degradation of the final combined FEL radiation. With the existence of the phase-shifter between the two crossed radiators, Fourier-Transform-Limited output radiation with 100 nJ order pulse energ…
We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that a nanoscale hollow channel placed centrally in the solid glass core of a photonic crystal fiber strongly enhances the cylindrical birefringence (the modal index difference between radially and azimuthally polarized modes). Furthermore, it causes a large split in group velocity and group velocity dispersion. We show analytically that all three parameters can be varied over a wide range by tuning the diameters of the nanobore and the core.
Using a nanomanipulation technique a nanodiamond with a single nitrogen vacancy center is placed directly on the surface of a gallium phosphide photonic crystal cavity. A Purcell-enhancement of the fluorescence emission at the zero phonon line (ZPL) by a factor of 12.1 is observed. The ZPL coupling is a first crucial step towards future diamond-based integrated quantum optical devices.
We present a method to map the absolute electromagnetic field strength inside photonic crystals. We apply the method to map the electric field component Ez of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab at microwave frequencies. The slab is placed between two mirrors to select Bloch standing waves and a subwavelength spherical scatterer is scanned inside the resulting resonator. The resonant Bloch frequencies shift depending on the electric field at the position of the scatterer. To map the electric field component Ez we measure the frequency shift in the reflection and transmission spectrum of th…
The possibility of overcoming the critical condition for localized photonic nanojet upon plane optical wave diffraction at mesoscale dielectric particle, which is commonly known as "the refractive index contrast is less than two", was recently reported in our works. To this end, the novel geometrical scheme of photonic nanojet generation in "reflection mode" was proposed based on a super-contrast microparticle (n~2) placed near a flat mirror. In this paper, through the numerical FDTD calculations of optical near-field structure of 2D and 3D dielectric microparticles (cylinder, sphere) we exten…

The periodic changes in the physical and chemical properties of the chemical elements are caused by the periodic change of the ionization energies, which are constant for each element that manifested in the Periodic Table. However, as has been recently shown the modification of the electromagnetic field in the photonic crystals gives rise to the modification of the electron electromagnetic mass. We show that the effect can significantly change the ionization energy of atoms placed in voids of photonic crystals consisting of metamaterials with a highly tunable refractive index and voids. The co…
One of the main steps towards large-scale quantum photonics consists of the integration of single photon sources (SPS) with photonic integrated circuits (PICs). For that purpose, the PICs should offer an efficient light coupling and a high preservation of the indistinguishability of photons. Therefore, optimization of the indistinguishability through waveguide design is especially relevant. In this work we have developed an analytical model to calculate the coupling and the indistinguishability of an ideal point-source quantum emitter coupled to a photonic waveguide depending on source orienta…
The ability to selectively redirect specific wavelengths of light has attracted a lot attention for photonic crystal materials. Presently, there is a wealth of research relating to the fabrication and application of photonic crystal materials. There a number of structures which fallinto the category of a photonic crystal; 1D, 2D and 3D ordered structures can qualify as a photonic crystal, provided there exists ordered repeating lattices of dielectric material with a sufficient refractive index contrast. The optical responses of these structures, namely the associated photonic bandgap or stopba…
The Raman gain of a probe light in a three-state $Λ$-scheme placed into a defect of a one-dimensional photonic crystal is studied theoretically. We show that there exists a pump intensity range, where the transmission and reflection spectra of the probe field exhibit \textit{simultaneously} occurring narrow peaks (resonances) whose position is determined by the Raman resonance. Transmission and reflection coefficients can be larger than unity at pump intensities of order tens of $μ$W/cm$^{2}$. When the pump intensity is outside this region, the peak in the transmission spectrum turns into a na…
The periodic changes in physical and chemical properties of the chemical elements is caused by the periodic change of the ionization energies. The ionization energy of each element is constant and this manifests itself in the periodic table. However, we show that the ionization energies can be dramatically changed, when atoms are placed in a photonic crystal consisting of materials with a highly tunable refractive index and voids. The tunability of these materials gives rise to the tunability of the ionization energies over a wide range. This allows one to come beyond the limitations put on by…
The phenomenon of trapping broad spectrum of light is known as `rainbow trapping' and achieved using all-dielectric, hybrid metallo-dielectric or all-metallic configurations. In the latter cases, unavoidable ohmic losses result in sub-picosecond trapped-mode lifetimes. For all practical purposes, novel strategies are required to be devised for trapping and subsequently, releasing broadband electromagnetic (em) field with lifetime > 1 ps. We present a rainbow trapping configuration using the excitation of multiple optical Tamm (OT) modes in an one-dimensional chirped photonic crystal (PC) desig…
Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency bandgaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, $ω_0$ and $2ω_0$, by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain w…
We measured and calculated transmission spectra of two-dimensional quasiperiodic photonic crystals (PCs) based on a 5-fold (Penrose) or 8-fold (octagonal) symmetric quasiperiodic pattern. The photonic crystal consisted of dielectric cylindrical rods in air placed normal to the basal plane on vertices of tiles composing the quasiperiodic pattern. An isotropic photonic band gap (PBG) appeared in the TM mode, where electric fields were parallel to the rods, even when the real part of a dielectric constant of the rod was as small as 2.4. An isotropic PBG-like dip was seen in tiny Penrose and octag…
A solid state emitter coupled to a photonic crystal cavity exhibits increased photon emission into a single frequency mode. However, current designs for photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum emitters have three main problems: emitters are placed near surfaces that can degrade their optical properties, the cavity fluorescence cannot be collected into a single useful mode for further routing, and post-fabrication tuning is not currently possible in a stable and reversible manner for each node individually. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid cavity design with minimal fabrication of the …
Integration is currently the only feasible route towards scalable photonic quantum processing devices that are sufficiently complex to be genuinely useful in computing, metrology, and simulation. Embedded on-chip detection will be critical to such devices. We demonstrate an integrated photon-number resolving detector, operating in the telecom band at 1550 nm, employing an evanescently coupled design that allows it to be placed at arbitrary locations within a planar circuit. Up to 5 photons are resolved in the guided optical mode via absorption from the evanescent field into a tungsten transiti…
Optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are most often considered in terms of plasmons, the coupled states of light and quasi-free electrons. Here we predict that confinement of electrons inside the nanostructure leads to another, very different, type of resonance, which determines the optical properties in the frequency range significantly below the plasmonic resonance. We demonstrate that closely placed confinement-induces resonances typically join into a single composite "super-resonance" which produces giant nonlinearity at low frequencies. Our simulations show how such nonlinearities…
In this study, we describe the formation of ZnO nanolayers inside the air capillaries of a silica photonic crystal fibre (PCF), targeting random laser and organic vapor sensing applications. ZnO nanolayers were developed by infiltrating the capillaries of the silica PCF with Zn-acetate/methanol solutions of various concentrations, followed by annealing treatments. The growth and morphology of the synthesized ZnO nanolayers were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and found to be affected by the concentration of the Zn-acetate/methanol infiltration solution. For low con…
Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities are promising candidates for Si photonics integrated circuits due to their ultrahigh quality (Q)-factors and small mode volumes. Here, we demonstrate a novel concept of a one-dimensional hybrid III-V/Si PhC cavity which exploits a combination of standard silicon-on-insulator technology and active III-V materials. Using template-assisted selective epitaxy, the central part of a Si PhC lattice is locally replaced with III-V gain material. The III-V material is placed to overlap with the maximum of the cavity mode field profile, while keeping the major part of the …
Ground-plane cloaks, which transform a curved mirror into a flat one, and recently reported at wavelengths ranging from the optical to the visible spectrum, bring the realm of optical illusion a step closer to reality. However, all carpet-cloaking experiments have thus far been carried out in the far-field. Here, we demonstrate numerically and experimentally that a dielectric photonic crystal (PC) of a complex shape made of a honeycomb array of air holes can scatter waves in the near field like a PC with a at boundary at stop band frequencies. This mirage effect relies upon a specific arrangem…
This work reports on an optical hydrophone that is insensitive to hydrostatic pressure, yet capable of measuring acoustic pressures as low as the background noise in the ocean in a frequency range of 1 Hz to 100 kHz. The miniature hydrophone consists of a Fabry-Perot interferometer made of a photonic-crystal reflector interrogated with a single-mode fiber, and is compatible with existing fiber-optic technologies. Three sensors with different acoustic power ranges placed within a sub-wavelength sized hydrophone head allow a high dynamic range in the excess of 160 dB with a low harmonic distorti…
The interaction of a single quantum emitter with its environment is a central theme in quantum optics. When placed in highly confined optical fields, such as those created in optical cavities or plasmonic structures, the optical properties of the emitter can change drastically. In particular, photonic crystal (PC) cavities show high quality factors combined with an extremely small mode volume. Efficiently coupling a single quantum emitter to a PC cavity is challenging because of the required positioning accuracy. Here, we demonstrate deterministic coupling of single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) cente…
Versatile manipulation of nano- and microobjects underlies the optomechanics and a variety of its applications in biology, medicine, and lab-on-a-chip platforms. For flexible tailoring optical forces, as well as for extraordinary optomechanical effects, additional degrees of freedom should be introduced into the system. Here, we demonstrate that photonic crystals provide a flexible platform for nanoparticles optical manipulation due to both Bloch surface waves (BSWs) and the complex character of the reflection coefficient paving a way for complex optomechanical interactions control. We demonst…
We review a novel method for characterizing both the spectral and spatial properties of resonant cavities within two-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs). An optical fiber taper serves as an external waveguide probe whose micron-scale field is used to source and couple light from the cavity modes, which appear as resonant features in the taper's wavelength-dependent transmission spectrum when it is placed within the cavity's near field. Studying the linewidth and depth of these resonances as a function of the taper's position with respect to the resonator produces quantitative measurements of t…
Thermo-optic microheater is indispensable in silicon photonic devices for smart and reconfigurable photonic networks. Much efforts have been made to improve the metallic microheater performance in the past decades. However, because of the metallic nature of light absorption, placing the metallic microheater very close to the waveguide for fast response is impractical and has not been done experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metallic microheater placed very close to the waveguide based on parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking. The intrinsic high loss of metallic heater ensures th…
Electroencephalography (EEG) analysis extracts critical information from brain signals, which has provided fundamental support for various applications, including brain-disease diagnosis and brain-computer interface. However, the real-time processing of large-scale EEG signals at high energy efficiency has placed great challenges for electronic processors on edge computing devices. Here, we propose the EEG opto-processor based on diffractive photonic computing units (DPUs) to effectively process the extracranial and intracranial EEG signals and perform epileptic seizure detection. The signals …
Traditionally, photonic crystal slabs can support resonances that are strongly confined to the slab but also couple to external radiation. However, when a photonic crystal slab is placed on a substrate, the resonance modes become less confined, and as the index contrast between slab and substrate decreases, they eventually disappear. Using the scale structure of the Dione juno butterfly wing as an inspiration, we present a low-index zigzag surface structure that supports resonance modes even without index contrast with the substrate. The zigzag structure supports resonances that are contained …
Integration of single-photon emitters (SPEs) with resonant photonic structures is a promising approach for realizing compact and efficient single-photon sources for quantum communications, computing, and sensing. Efficient interaction between the SPE and the photonic cavity requires that the cavity's resonance matches the SPE emission line. Here we demonstrate a new method for tuning silicon nitride (Si3N4) microring cavities via controlled deposition of the cladding layers. Guided by numerical simulations, we deposit silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanolayers onto Si3N4 ridge structures in steps of 50…
Single organic molecules offer great promise as bright, reliable sources of identical single photons on demand, capable of integration into solid-state devices. It has been proposed that such molecules in a crystalline organic matrix might be placed close to an optical waveguide for this purpose, but so far there have been no demonstrations of sufficiently thin crystals, with a controlled concentration of suitable dopant molecules. Here we present a method for growing very thin anthracene crystals from super-saturated vapour, which produces crystals of extreme flatness and controlled thickness…
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors promise efficient (~100%) and fast (~Gcps) detection of light at the single-photon level. They constitute one of the building blocks to realize integrated quantum optical circuits in a waveguide architecture. The optical response of single-photon detectors, however, is limited to measure only the presence of photons. It misses the capability to resolve the spectrum of a possible broadband illumination. In this work, we propose the optical design for a superconducting nanowire single-photon spectrometer in an integrated optical platform. We explo…
Optical absorption is one of fundamental light-matter interactions. In most materials, optical absorption is a weak perturbation to the light. In this regime, absorption and emission are irreversible, incoherent processes due to strong damping. Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, however, interact strongly with light, leading to optical absorption in the non-perturbative regime where coherent re-emission of the light has to be considered. Between the incoherent and coherent limits, we show that a robust critical coupling condition exists, leading to perfect optical absorpti…
