The process of radiation of 120-GeV positrons moving in a channeling regime in (011) plane of a single crystal was considered. At the beginning on the basis of the theory of nonlinear oscillations the trajectory of moving positrons at different initial conditions were derived. Then taking into account the nonlinearity of motion the distribution function over oscillation amplitudes of channeling particles was found. After this the intensity of radiation at different initial conditions was calculated with the help of two various methods. These results may be useful for comparison with experimental data at positron energies from 100 and more GeV.
The possibility of channeling the low-energy relativistic positrons around separate crystallographic axes with coaxial symmetry of negative ions in some types of crystals is shown. The process of annihilation of positrons with electrons of medium was studied in detail.
An analytical expression is received for the effective interaction potential of a fast charged particle with the ionic crystal CsCl near the direction of axis <100> as a function of the temperature of the medium. A possibility of positron channeling in this potential is shown. By numerical analysis it is shown that the effective potential of axial channeling of positrons along the axis <100> of negatively charged ions practically does not depend on temperature of the media.
Channeling and radiation are studied for the relativistic electrons and positrons passing through a Si crystal periodically bent with a small amplitude and a short period. Comprehensive analysis of the channeling process for various bending amplitudes is presented on the grounds of numerical simulations. The features of the channeling are highlighted and elucidated within an analytically developed continuous potential approximation. The radiation spectra are computed and discussed.
Planar channeling of 855 MeV electrons and positrons in straight and bent tungsten (110) crystal is simulated by means of the \MBNExplorer software package. The results of simulations for a broad range of bending radii are analyzed in terms of the channel acceptance, dechanneling length, and spectral distribution of the emitted radiation. Comparison of the results with predictions of other theories as well as with the data for (110) oriented diamond, silicon and germanium crystals is carried out.
We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crys…
The motion of fast electrons through the crystal during axial channeling could be regular and chaotic. The dynamical chaos in quantum systems manifests itself in both statistical properties of energy spectra and morphology of wave functions of the individual stationary states. In this report, we investigate the axial channeling of high and low energy electrons and positrons near [100] direction of a silicon crystal. This case is particularly interesting because of the fact that the chaotic motion domain occupies only a small part of the phase space for the channeling electrons whereas the moti…
In this paper we present the results of a systematic numerical analysis of the channeling properties of electrons and positrons in oriented straight and periodically bent diamond(110) crystals. We analyse dependence of the intensity of the radiation emitted on the projectile energy as well as on the bending amplitude. The analysis presented is based on the grounds of accurate numerical simulations of the channeling process. The simulation parameters, such as the crystal orientation, thickness and bending parameters of the crystals as well as the energy of the projectiles, were chosen to match …
The results of numerical simulation of the channeling of ultra-relativistic 270 MeV electrons and positrons in a diamond crystal are presented. Using the MBN Explorer package, the trajectories of the have been determined of the particles incident on a 20 microns thick crystal along (110) crystallographic plane. The channeling parameters and radiation spectra of electrons and positrons have been computed for the cases of straight and periodically bent diamond crystals.
We predict peculiar changes in spectral distributions of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons in periodically bent crystals with variation of the bending amplitude. It is shown that the changes, being sensitive to the projectile energy, manifest themselves differently for negatively and positively charged projectiles. We demonstrate that the features observed are due to the interplay of different radiation mechanisms occurring in periodically bent crystals. The observations are important for design, practical realization and channeling experiments with periodically b…
The snapshot model of crystal atoms was implemented in the Monte Carlo code ChaS (Channeling Simulator) and is being successfully used for simulation of ultrarelativistic particle channeling. The model was criticized by Sushko et al. (J. Comp. Phys. 252 (2013) 404-418) who claim that it overestimates the mean scattering angle in a single projectile-atom collision. As a matter of fact, no evidence that would support this claim can be found in the mentioned publication. Moreover, the snapshot model and the model suggested by Sushko et al. yield essentially the same value of the mean scattering a…
Radiation of charged particles passing through a set of equidistant ridges on the surface of a single crystal is calculated. The ridges are rectangular in shape, each of thickness of half of the particle trajectory period at planar channeling in a thick crystal. Positively charged particle entering the first ridge with angle smaller than the critical channeling angle is captured into channeling and changes the direction of its transversal velocity to reversed. Between the half-wave ridges the particle moves along a straight line. Passing through such set of half-wave crystal plates the particl…
The Stokes parameters have been found in the framework of quantum electrodynamics for the description of polarization of radiation emitted by relativistic positrons channeled between (110) planes in Si crystal. The degree of polarization, which is simply given by the contribution of channeling radiation, has been analyzed. Numerical calculation are presented for the frequencies that are most interesting for the sources of polarized high-energy photons.
The energy and momentum conservation laws prohibit positron-electron annihilation in vacuum producing the single photon only. It can produce two photons in vacuum, or the process is possible with a participation of the third body. The situation is different in a single crystal with one of the leptons (e.g. positron) moving in the channeling (or in the quasi-channeling) mode when the transverse motion of a particle is bound or sufficiently uneven. It may increase sharply the probability of the single photon annihilation process.
Mixed (Regular and Chaotic) Dynamics under the Channeling of the High Energy Positrons in [100] Direction of the Silicon Crystal and Podolskiy-Narimanov Distribution
The motion of charged particles in a crystal in the axial channeling regime can be both regular and chaotic. The chaos in quantum case manifests itself in the statistical properties of the energy levels set. These properties have been studied previously for the electrons channeling along [110] direction of the silicon crystal, in the case when the classical motion was completely chaotic. The case of channeling along [100] direction is of special interest because the classical motion here can be both regular and chaotic for the same energy depending on the initial conditions. The semiclassical …
An investigation on the mechanism of relaxation of axially confined 400 GeV/c protons to planar channeling in a bent crystal was carried out at the extracted line H8 from CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The experimental results were critically compared to computer simulations, showing a good agreement. We firmly individuated a necessary condition for the exploitation of axial confinement or its relaxation for particle beam manipulation in high-energy accelerators. We demonstrated that with a short bent crystal, aligned with one of its main axis to the beam direction, it is possible to realize e…
We report the observation of the steering of 855 MeV electrons by bent silicon and germanium crystals at the MAinzer MIkrotron. 15 $μ$m long crystals, bent along (111) planes, were exploited to investigate orientational coherent effects. By using a piezo-actuated mechanical holder, which allowed to remotely change the crystal curvature, it was possible to study the steering capability of planar channeling and volume reflection vs. the curvature radius and the atomic number, Z. For silicon, the channeling efficiency exceeds 35 %, a record for negatively charged particles. This was possible due …
The process of scattering of fast charged particles in thin crystals is considered in the transitional range of thicknesses, between those at which the channeling phenomenon is not developed and those at which it is realized. The possibility is shown of application of the methods of geometrical optics for description of the scattering process. The dependence is studied of the total scattering cross-section of ultrarelativistic positrons on target thickness in this range of crystal thicknesses. In the case of ultrarelativistic particles channeling the possibility is shown of the existence of an…
In the classical approximation, we examine the problem of radiation by channeled positrons in the field of a longitudinal ultrasonic wave when the condition of parametric resonance is satisfied. We show that in the case of planar channeling the intensity of the spectral distribution of the radiation can be several times larger than when the resonance condition is not satisfied.
The usage of a Crystalline Undulator (CU) has been identified as a promising solution for generating powerful and monochromatic $γ$-rays. A CU was fabricated at SSL through the grooving method, i.e., by the manufacturing of a series of periodical grooves on the major surfaces of a crystal. The CU was extensively characterized both morphologically via optical interferometry at SSL and structurally via X-ray diffraction at ESRF. Then, it was finally tested for channeling with a 400 GeV/c proton beam at CERN. The experimental results were compared to Monte Carlo simulations. Evidence of planar ch…
A surprising small dechanneling length was observed at (111) channeling of ultrarelativistic electrons in a 60 $μ$m thick silicon single crystal with a bending radius of 0.15 m. The experiments were conducted at beam energies between 3.35 and 14 GeV at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET at SLAC, USA). It is shown in this paper that the small dechanneling lengths can well be reproduced with a modified Fokker-Planck equation for plane crystals in which a crystal bending has been heuristically introduced. Encouraged by this result experiments have been reconsidered wh…
Under coherent interactions, particles undergo correlated collisions with the crystal lattice and their motion result in confinement in the fields of atomic planes, i.e. particle channeling. Other than coherently interacting with the lattice, particles also suffer incoherent interactions with individual nuclei and may leave their bounded motion, i.e., they de-channel. This latter is the main limiting factor for applications of coherent interactions in crystal-assisted particle steering. We experimentally investigated the nature of dechanneling of 120 GeV/c $e^{-}$ and $e^{+}$ in a bent silicon…
Methodology is developed that incorporates the radiation reaction force into the relativistic molecular dynamics framework implemented in the MBN Explorer software package. The force leads to a gradual decrease in the projectile's energy E due to the radiation emission. This effect is especially strong for ultra-relativistic projectiles passing through oriented crystals where they experience the action of strong electrostatic fields as has been shown in recent experiments. A case study has been carried out for the initial approbation of the methodology developed. Simulations of the processes o…
In the baseline design of the International Linear Collider (ILC) an undulator-based source is foreseen for the positron source. In this study the energy deposition in the pulsed flux concentrator (FC) of positron source is calculated for the ILC at 250 GeV center-of-mass energy. The peak energy of 33 J/g deposited by one beam pulse in the current design of the FC is above the limit for copper material. Several promising options were considered to solve the issue of overheating the FC: the quarter wave transformer (QWT) has a significantly bigger aperture and is considered as an valuable and s…
In the future the International Linear Collider (ILC), a helical undulator-based polarized positron source, is expected to be chosen. A high energy electron beam passes through a superconducting helical undulator in order to create circularly polarized photons which will be directed to a conversion target, resulting in electron-positron pairs. The resulting positron beam is longitudinally polarized. Since the photons are produced with an opening angle and pass through a long superconducting helical undulator, some of these photons will strike the undulator walls. Therefore photon masks must be…
An intense positron sources is a demanding element in the design of future lepton colliders. A crystal-based hybrid positron source could be an alternative to a more conventional scheme based on the electron conversion into positron in a thick amorphous target. The conceptual idea of the hybrid source is to have two separate objects, a photon radiator and a photon-to-positron converter target. In such a scheme an electron beam crosses a thin axially oriented crystal with the emission of a channeling radiation, characterized by a considerably larger amount of photons if compared to Bremsstrahlu…
Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for 855 MeV and 6.3 GeV electrons channeling in silicon single crystals at circular bent (111) planes. The aim was to identify critical experimental parameters which effect the volume-deflection and volume-capture characteristics. To these belongs the angular alignment of the crystal with respect to the nominal beam direction. The continuum potential picture has been utilized. The simulation results were compared with experiments. It turns out that the assumption of an anticlastic bending of the crystal, bent on the principle of the quasi-mosaic effe…
Basing on experiments at SLAC, MAMI, CERN, and on Monte Carlo simulations, we assess the physical limits on efficiency and reachable angles of electron deflection in bent crystals in the energy range from sub-GeV to sub-TeV. We find that applications of electron channeling for beam deflection are possible, limited by maximal deflection angle of 2-3 mrad at sub-GeV, 1-2 mrad at multi-GeV, and 0.5-1 mrad at sub-TeV energy. This opens opportunities for crystal-assisted electron beam extraction from accelerator rings.
Current searches for a dark photon in the mass range below 1 GeV require an electron-positron collider with a luminosity at the level of at least $10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The challenge is that, at such low energies, the collider luminosity rapidly drops off due to increase in the beam sizes, strong mutual focusing of the colliding beams, and enhancement of collective effects. Using recent advances in accelerator technology such as the nano-beam scheme of SuperKEK-B, high-current Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL), and magnetized beams, we propose a new configuration of an electron-positron colli…
We report on the measurements of the spectra of gamma radiation generated by 855 MeV electrons in bent silicon and germanium crystals at MAMI (MAinzer MIkrotron). The crystals were 15 μm thick along the beam direction to ensure high deflection efficiency. Their (111) crystalline planes were bent by means of a piezo-actuated mechanical holder, which allowed to remotely change the crystal curvature. In such a way it was possible to investigate the radiation emitted under planar channeling and volume reflection as a function of the curvature of the crystalline planes. We show that using volume re…
