The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.
The process of radiation of 120-GeV positrons moving in a channeling regime in (011) plane of a single crystal was considered. At the beginning on the basis of the theory of nonlinear oscillations the trajectory of moving positrons at different initial conditions were derived. Then taking into account the nonlinearity of motion the distribution function over oscillation amplitudes of channeling particles was found. After this the intensity of radiation at different initial conditions was calculated with the help of two various methods. These results may be useful for comparison with experiment…
Preliminary results of numerical simulations of electron and positron channeling and emission spectra are reported for straight, uniformly bent and periodically bent silicon crystal. The projectile trajectories are computed using the newly developed module [1] of the MBN Explorer package [2,3]. The electron and positron channeling along Si(110) and Si(111) crystallographic planes are studied for the projectile energies 195--855 MeV.
In the baseline design of the International Linear Collider (ILC) an undulator-based source is foreseen for the positron source. In this study the energy deposition in the pulsed flux concentrator (FC) of positron source is calculated for the ILC at 250 GeV center-of-mass energy. The peak energy of 33 J/g deposited by one beam pulse in the current design of the FC is above the limit for copper material. Several promising options were considered to solve the issue of overheating the FC: the quarter wave transformer (QWT) has a significantly bigger aperture and is considered as an valuable and s…
In the future the International Linear Collider (ILC), a helical undulator-based polarized positron source, is expected to be chosen. A high energy electron beam passes through a superconducting helical undulator in order to create circularly polarized photons which will be directed to a conversion target, resulting in electron-positron pairs. The resulting positron beam is longitudinally polarized. Since the photons are produced with an opening angle and pass through a long superconducting helical undulator, some of these photons will strike the undulator walls. Therefore photon masks must be…
A periodically bent Si crystal is shown to efficiently serve for producing highly monochromatic radiation in a gamma-ray energy spectral range. A short-period small-amplitude bending yields narrow undulator-type spectral peaks in radiation from multi-GeV electrons and positrons channeling through the crystal. Benchmark theoretical results on the undulator are obtained by simulations of the channeling with a full atomistic approach to the projectile-crystal interactions over the macroscopic propagation distances. The simulations are facilitated by employing the MBN Explorer package for molecula…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of positron bunch focusing when acceleration in a plasma dielectric wakefield accelerator. The wakefield was excited by drive electron bunch in quartz dielectric tube, embedded in cylindrical metal waveguide. The internal area of dielectric tube has been filled with radially homogeneous plasma having in general case the vacuum channel along waveguide axis. Results of numerical PIC simulation have shown that it is possible a simultaneous acceleration and focusing of test positron bunch in the wakefield. The dependence of transport and a…
Current searches for a dark photon in the mass range below 1 GeV require an electron-positron collider with a luminosity at the level of at least $10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The challenge is that, at such low energies, the collider luminosity rapidly drops off due to increase in the beam sizes, strong mutual focusing of the colliding beams, and enhancement of collective effects. Using recent advances in accelerator technology such as the nano-beam scheme of SuperKEK-B, high-current Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL), and magnetized beams, we propose a new configuration of an electron-positron colli…
We present results from the SLAC E-150 experiment on plasma focusing of high energy density electron and, for the first time, positron beams. We also discuss measurements on plasma lens-induced synchrotron radiation, longitudinal dynamics of plasma focusing, and laser- and beam-plasma interactions.
The Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) project has been developed with the support of the Turkish State Planning Organization by the collaboration of 10 Turkish universities. The complex is planned to have four main facilities, namely: SASE FEL Facility Based on 1 GeV Electron Linac, Third Generation Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SR) Based on 3.56 GeV Positron Synchrotron, Super-Charm Factory ($\sqrt{s} = 3.77$ GeV) by colliding the electron beam coming from the linac with an energy of 1 GeV and positron beam coming through the positron ring with an energy of 3.56 GeV, GeV scale proton acceler…
A new concept is proposed for accelerating positrons in a nonlinear plasma wakefield accelerator. By loading the wakefield (back of the plasma bubble) with a short electron bunch, an extended area of excessive plasma electron accumulation is created after the first bubble, resulting in a favorable region with simultaneous focusing and accelerating fields for positrons. Scaling laws for optimized loading parameters are obtained through extensive parameters scans. Owing to the good quality of the focusing field, positron acceleration with emittance preservation can be achieved in this new regime…
Hollow channel plasma wakefield acceleration is a proposed method to provide high acceleration gradients for electrons and positrons alike: a key to future lepton colliders. However, beams which are misaligned from the channel axis induce strong transverse wakefields, deflecting beams and reducing the collider luminosity. This undesirable consequence sets a tight constraint on the alignment accuracy of the beam propagating through the channel. Direct measurements of beam misalignment-induced transverse wakefields are therefore essential for designing mitigation strategies. We present the first…
In a conventional positron source driven by a few GeV electron beam, a high amount of heat is loaded into a positron converter target to generate intense positrons required by linear colliders, and which would eventually damage the converter target. A hybrid target, composed of a single crystal target as a radiator of intense gamma--rays, and an amorphous converter target placed downstream of the crystal, was proposed as a scheme which could overcome the problem. This paper describes the development of an intense positron source with the hybrid target. A series of experiments on positron genera…
Hollow plasma channels are attractive for lepton acceleration because they provide intrinsic emittance preservation regimes. However, beam breakup instabilities dominate the dynamics. Here, we show that thin, warm hollow channels can sustain large-amplitude plasma waves ready for high-quality positron acceleration. We verify that the combination of warm electrons and thin hollow channel enables positron focusing structures. Such focusing wakefields unlock beam breakup damping mechanisms. We demonstrate that such channels emerge self-consistently during the long-term plasma dynamics in the blow…
Numerical simulations and `proof of principle' experiments showed clearly the interest of using crystals as photon generators dedicated to intense positron sources for linear colliders. An experimental investigation, using a 10 GeV secondary electron beam, of the SPS-CERN, impinging on an axially oriented thick tungsten crystal, has been prepared and operated between May and August 2000. After a short recall on the main features of positron sources using channeling in oriented crystals, the experimental set-up is described. A particular emphasis is put on the positron detector made of a drift …
In this paper, the feasibility of the electron-positron collider based on plasma accelerator is proved by simulation experiments. Starting from the 17.612cm proton beam provided by SPS (super proton synchrotron), the simulation shows that the long proton beam can form several high quality proton bunches through seeded self-modulation in the first half of the long proton beam in a uniform plasma. Then we use these high-quality bunches to excite the wakefield in a uniform plasma and accelerate witness positrons and witness electrons. The simulation results show that the average energy of witness…
Muon beams are customarily obtained via $K/π$ decays produced in proton interaction on target. In this paper we investigate the possibility to produce low emittance muon beams from electron-positron collisions at centre-of-mass energy just above the $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ production threshold with maximal beam energy asymmetry, corresponding to a positron beam of about 45 GeV interacting on electrons on target. We present the main features of this scheme with an outline of the possible applications.
Plasma wakefield acceleration in the blowout regime is particularly promising for high-energy acceleration of electron beams because of its potential to simultaneously provide large acceleration gradients and high energy transfer efficiency while maintaining excellent beam quality. However, no equivalent regime for positron acceleration in plasma wakes has been discovered to-date. We show that after a short propagation distance, an asymmetric electron beam drives a stable wakefield in a hollow plasma channel that can be both accelerating and focusing for a positron beam. A high charge positron…
The intrinsic constraints in the amplitude of the accelerating fields sustainable by radio-frequency accelerators demand for the pursuit of alternative and more compact acceleration schemes. Among these, plasma-based accelerators are arguably the most promising, thanks to the high-accelerating fields they can sustain, greatly exceeding the GeV/m. While plasma-based acceleration of electrons is now sufficiently mature for systematic studies in this direction, positron acceleration is still at its infancy, with limited projects currently undergoing to provide a viable test facility for further e…
We propose a setup for positron acceleration consisting of an electron driver and a laser pulse creating a two-fold plasma column structure. The resulting wakefield is capable of accelerating positron bunches over long distances even when evolution of the driver is considered. The scheme is studied by means of particle-in-cell simulations. Further, the analytical expression for the accelerating and focusing fields are obtained, showing the equilibrium lines along which the witness bunch is accelerated.
A novel scheme is proposed for generating a polarized positron beam via multiphoton Breit-Wheeler process during the collision of a 10 GeV, pC seeding electron beam with the other 1 GeV, nC driving electron beam. The driving beam provides the strong self-generated field, and a suitable transverse deviation distance between two beams enables the field experienced by the seeding beam to be unipolar, which is crucial for realizing the positron polarization. We employ the particle simulation with a Monte-Carlo method to calculate the spin- and polarization-resolved photon emission and electron-pos…
We propose a plasma-based high-energy lepton accelerator, in which a weakly focusing plasma structure is formed near the beam axis. The structure preserves the emittance of the accelerated beam and produces low radiation losses. Moreover, the structure allows for a considerable decrease of the witness energy spread at the driver depletion stage.
Simulations of electron and positron channelling in a crystalline undulator with a small amplitude and a short period (A Kostyuk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 115503) were repeated by V G Bezchastnov, A V Korol and A V Solov'yov (J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 47 (2014) 195401)for the same parameter set but using another computer code, MBN Explorer, which implements a different model of projectile scattering by crystal atoms. The authors of the latter paper claim that their approach, in contrast to the one of the former paper, allows them to observe short-period undulator oscillations in plots…
The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons (PEPPo) experiment has demonstrated the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the bremsstrahlung radiation of a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% has been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19 MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. Combined with the high intensity and high polarization performances of polarized electron sources, this technique extends efficient polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron accelerators. …
A positron-beam interacting with the plasma electrons drives radial suck-in, in contrast to an electron-beam driven blow-out in the over-dense regime, $n_b>n_0$. In a homogeneous plasma, the electrons are radially sucked-in from all the different radii. The electrons collapsing from different radii do not simultaneously compress on-axis driving weak fields. A hollow-channel allows electrons from its channel-radius to collapse simultaneously exciting coherent fields. We analyze the optimal channel radius. Additionally, the low ion density in the hollow allows a larger region with focusing phase…
