In this paper we present a locally and dimension-adaptive sparse grid method for interpolation and integration of high-dimensional functions with discontinuities. The proposed algorithm combines the strengths of the generalised sparse grid algorithm and hierarchical surplus-guided local adaptivity. A high-degree basis is used to obtain a high-order method which, given sufficient smoothness, performs significantly better than the piecewise-linear basis. The underlying generalised sparse grid algorithm greedily selects the dimensions and variable interactions that contribute most to the variability of a function. The hierarchical surplus of points within the sparse grid is used as an error criterion for local refinement with the aim of concentrating computational effort within rapidly varying or discontinuous regions. This approach limits the number of points that are invested in `unimportant' dimensions and regions within the high-dimensional domain. We show the utility of the proposed method for non-smooth functions with hundreds of variables.
Stochastic optimisation problems minimise expectations of random cost functions. We use 'optimise then discretise' method to solve stochastic optimisation. In our approach, accurate quadrature methods are required to calculate the objective, gradient or Hessian which are in fact integrals. We apply the dimension-adaptive sparse grid quadrature to approximate these integrals when the problem is high dimensional. Dimension-adaptive sparse grid quadrature shows high accuracy and efficiency in computing an integral with a smooth integrand. It is a kind of generalisation of the classical sparse gri…
A new grid system on a sphere is proposed that allows for straight-forward implementation of both spherical-harmonics-based spectral methods and gridpoint-based multigrid methods. The latitudinal gridpoints in the new grid are equidistant and spectral transforms in the latitudinal direction are performed using Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature. The spectral transforms with this new grid and quadrature are shown to be exact within the machine precision provided that the grid truncation is such that there are at least 2N + 1 latitudinal gridpoints for the total truncation wavenumber of N. The new grid …

We examine sparse grid quadrature on weighted tensor products (WTP) of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on products of the unit sphere, in the case of worst case quadrature error for rules with arbitrary quadrature weights. We describe a dimension adaptive quadrature algorithm based on an algorithm of Hegland (2003), and also formulate a version of Wasilkowski and Wozniakowski's WTP algorithm (1999), here called the WW algorithm. We prove that the dimension adaptive algorithm is optimal in the sense of Dantzig (1957) and therefore no greater in cost than the WW algorithm. Both algorithms ther…
The main purpose of this article is to facilitate the implementation of space-time finite element methods in four-dimensional space. In order to develop a finite element method in this setting, it is necessary to create a numerical foundation, or equivalently a numerical infrastructure. This foundation should include a collection of suitable elements (usually hypercubes, simplices, or closely related polytopes), numerical interpolation procedures (usually orthonormal polynomial bases), and numerical integration procedures (usually quadrature rules). It is well known that each of these areas ha…

We study approximation properties of multivariate periodic functions from weighted Wiener spaces by sparse grids methods constructed with the help of quasi-interpolation operators. The class of such operators includes classical interpolation and sampling operators, Kantorovich-type operators, scaling expansions associated with wavelet constructions, and others. We obtain the rate of convergence of the corresponding sparse grids methods in weighted Wiener norms as well as analogues of the Littlewood-Paley-type characterizations in terms of families of quasi-interpolation operators.
A class of trigonometric interpolation splines depending on parameter vectors, selected convergence factors and interpolation factors is considered. The concept of crosslink grids and interpolation grids is introduced; these grids can match or y not match. Parseval equality is given and some properties of splines are discussed. The material is illustrated by a numerical example.
The paper deals with the approximate solution of integro-differential equations of Prandtl's type. Quadrature methods involving ``optimal'' Lagrange interpolation processes are proposed and conditions under which they are stable and convergent in suitable weighted spaces of continuous functions are proved. The efficiency of the method has been tested by some numerical experiments, some of them including comparisons with other numerical procedures. In particular, as an application, we have implemented the method for solving Prandtl's equation governing the circulation air flow along the contour…
In this work, we study a global quadrature scheme for analytic functions on compact intervals based on function values on quasi-uniform grids of quadrature nodes. In practice it is not always possible to sample functions at optimal nodes that give well-conditioned and quickly converging interpolatory quadrature rules at the same time. Therefore, we go beyond classical interpolatory quadrature by lowering the degree of the polynomial approximant and by applying auxiliary mapping functions that map the original quadrature nodes to more suitable fake nodes. More precisely, we investigate the comb…

A fundamental task in kernel methods is to pick nodes and weights, so as to approximate a given function from an RKHS by the weighted sum of kernel translates located at the nodes. This is the crux of kernel density estimation, kernel quadrature, or interpolation from discrete samples. Furthermore, RKHSs offer a convenient mathematical and computational framework. We introduce and analyse continuous volume sampling (VS), the continuous counterpart -- for choosing node locations -- of a discrete distribution introduced in (Deshpande & Vempala, 2006). Our contribution is theoretical: we prove al…
One of the possible variants of the classification of trigonometric interpolation splines is considered, depending on the chosen convergence factors, the distribution of signs of the basis functions and the interpolation factors. The concept of crosslinking and interpolation grids is introduced; these grids can either match or not match. The proposed classification is illustrated by an example.
A novel method is proposed to infer Bayesian predictions of computationally expensive models. The method is based on the construction of quadrature rules, which are well-suited for approximating the weighted integrals occurring in Bayesian prediction. The novel idea is to construct a sequence of nested quadrature rules with positive weights that converge to a quadrature rule that is weighted with respect to the posterior. The quadrature rules are constructed using a proposal distribution that is determined by means of nearest neighbor interpolation of all available evaluations of the posterior…
The present paper is devoted to construction of an optimal quadrature formula for approximation of Fourier integrals in the Hilbert space $W_2^{(1,0)}[a,b]$ of non-periodic, complex valued functions. Here the quadrature sum consists of linear combination of the given function values on uniform grid. The difference between integral and quadrature sum is estimated by the norm of the error functional. The optimal quadrature formula is obtained by minimizing the norm of the error functional with respect to coefficients. In addition, analytic formulas for optimal coefficients are obtained using the…
We prove quartic convergence of cubic spline interpolation for curves into Riemannian manifolds as the grid size of the interpolation grid tends to zero. In contrast to cubic spline interpolation in Euclidean space, where this result is classical, the interpolation operator is no longer linear. Still, concepts from the linear setting may be generalized to the Riemannian case, where we try to use intrinsic Riemannian formulations and avoid charts as much as possible.

Deterministic interpolation and quadrature methods are often unsuitable to address Bayesian inverse problems depending on computationally expensive forward mathematical models. While interpolation may give precise posterior approximations, deterministic quadrature is usually unable to efficiently investigate an informative and thus concentrated likelihood. This leads to a large number of required expensive evaluations of the mathematical model. To overcome these challenges, we formulate and test a multilevel adaptive sparse Leja algorithm. At each level, adaptive sparse grid interpolation and …
