We construct two Lefschetz decompositions of the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian of $k$-dimensional subspaces in a vector space of dimension $n$. Both of them admit a Lefschetz basis consisting of equivariant vector bundles. We prove fullness of the first decomposition and conjecture it for the second one. In the case when $n$ and $k$ are coprime these decompositions coincide and are minimal. In general, we conjecture minimality of the second decomposition.
We define and discuss some general properties of residual categories of Lefschetz decompositions in triangulated categories. In the case of the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian $\text{G}(k,n)$ we conjecture that the residual category associated with Fonarev's Lefschetz exceptional collection is generated by a completely orthogonal exceptional collection. We prove this conjecture for $k = p$, a prime number, modulo completeness of Fonarev's collection (and for $p = 3$ we check this completeness).
The subject of this paper is the big quantum cohomology rings of symplectic isotropic Grassmannians $\text{IG}(2, 2n)$. We show that these rings are regular. In particular, by "generic smoothness", we obtain a conceptual proof of generic semisimplicity of the big quantum cohomology for $\text{IG}(2, 2n)$. Further, by a general result of Claus Hertling, the regularity of these rings implies that they have a description in terms of isolated hypersurface singularities, which we show in this case to be of type $A_{n-1}$. By the homological mirror symmetry conjecture, these results suggest the exis…
In this note we describe the cohomology ring of the Grassmannian of $k$-planes in $n$-dimensional complex vector space as an $\mathrm{GL}_n$-module. We give explicit formulas for the operators of its principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple. It is proved that one of these operators corresponds to the shifted cohomology degree operator and the second operator coincides with the Lefschetz map on cohomology (as in the hard Lefschetz theorem). We check that the cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannian as a $\mathrm{GL}_n$-representation is isomorphic to the $k$-th exterior power of the standard $n$-d…
Let X be the quotient of a smooth projective variety over a field by a finite group action (in which case we say X is pseudo-smooth), such that the singularities of X are isolated k-rational points. Let Y be obtained by blowing up these points on X. Assume further that Y is pseudo-smooth, and that the components of the exceptional divisor are projective spaces. Then, without invoking the theory of finite-dimensional motives or assuming any of the standard conjectures, we show that a Chow-Kunneth decomposition on either X or Y gives rise, by means of an explicit construction, to a Chow-Kunneth …
We show that the eigenspaces of the Laplacian $Δ_k$ on $k$-forms on a compact Kähler manifold carry Hodge and Lefschetz decompositions. Among other consequences, we show that the positive part of the spectrum of $Δ_k$ lies in the spectrum of $Δ_{k+1}$.
We reprove the Lefschetz trace formula for Lubin-Tate spaces, based on the locally finite cell decompositions of these spaces obtained by Fargues, and Mieda's theorem of Lefschetz trace formula for certain open adic spaces (\cite{Mi1} theorem 3.13). This proof is rather different from those of Strauch in \cite{St} (theorem 3.3.1) and of Mieda in \cite{Mi1} (example 4.21), and is quite hopeful to generalized to some other Rapoport-Zink spaces as soon as there exist suitable cell decompositions. For example, we proved a Lefschetz trace formula for some unitary Rapoport-Zink spaces in \cite{Sh} b…

We study the arc space of the Grassmannian from the point of view of the singularities of Schubert varieties. Our main tool is a decomposition of the arc space of the Grassmannian that resembles the Schubert cell decomposition of the Grassmannian itself. Just as the combinatorics of Schubert cells is controlled by partitions, the combinatorics in the arc space is controlled by plane partitions (sometimes also called 3d partitions). A combination of a geometric analysis of the pieces in the decomposition and a combinatorial analysis of plane partitions leads to invariants of the singularities. …
In this paper, we introduce Schubert decompositions for quiver Grassmannians and investigate example classes of quiver Grassmannians with a Schubert decomposition into affine spaces. The main theorem puts the cells of a Schubert decomposition into relation to the cells of a certain simpler quiver Grassmannian. This allows us to extend known examples of Schubert decompositions into affine spaces to a larger class of quiver Grassmannians. This includes exceptional representations of the Kronecker quiver as well as representations of forests with block matrices of the form $\begin{pmatrix} 0&1\\ …
We propose an explicit conjectural lift of the Neron-Severi Lie algebra of a hyperkähler variety $X$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type to the Chow ring of correspondences ${\rm CH}^\ast(X \times X)$ in terms of a canonical lift of the Beauville-Bogomolov class obtained by Markman. We give evidence for this conjecture in the case of the Hilbert scheme of two points of a $K3$ surface and in the case of the Fano variety of lines of a very general cubic fourfold. Moreover, we show that the Fourier decomposition of the Chow ring of $X$ of Shen and Vial agrees with the eigenspace decomposition of a canonical lift …
Let X be an abelian scheme over a base variety S with endomorphism algebra D. We prove that the relative Chow motive R(X/S) has a canonical decomposition as a direct sum of motives R^(ξ)$ where ξruns over an explicitly determined finite set of irreducible representations of the group D^{opp,*}, such that R^(ξ), seen as a functor from Chow motives to D^{\opp,*}-representations, is ξ-isotypic. Our decomposition refines the motivic decomposition of Deninger and Murre, as well as Beauville's decomposition of the Chow group. The second main result is that we construct a canonical generalized motivi…
We show that the cohomology ring of a quiver Grassmannian asssociated with a rigid quiver representation has property (S): there is no odd cohomology and the cycle map is an isomorphism; moreover, its Chow ring admits explicit generators defined over any field. From this we deduce the polynomial point count property. By restricting the quiver to finite or affine type, we are able to show a much stronger assertion: namely, that a quiver Grassmannian associated to an indecomposable (not necessarily rigid) representation admits a cellular decomposition. As a corollary, we establish a cellular dec…
In this text, we characterize the representation type of an acyclic quiver by the properties of its associated quiver Grassmannians. This characterization utilizes and extends known results about singular quiver Grassmannians and cell decompositions into affine spaces. While all quiver Grassmannians for indecomposable representations of quivers of finite representation types $A$ and $D$ are smooth and admit cell decompositions, it turns out that all quiver Grassmannians for indecomposable representations of quivers of tame types $A$ and $D$ admit cell decompositions, but some of these quiver G…
We prove that all quiver Grassmannians for exceptional representations of a generalized Kronecker quiver admit a cell decomposition. In the process, we introduce a class of regular representations which arise as quotients of consecutive preprojective representations. Cell decompositions for quiver Grassmannians of these "truncated preprojectives" are also established. We also provide two natural combinatorial labelings for these cells. On the one hand, they are labeled by certain subsets of a so-called 2-quiver attached to a (truncated) preprojective representation. On the other hand, the cell…
Extending the main result of Part 1, in the first part of this paper we show that every quiver Grassmannian of a representation of a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$ has a decomposition into affine spaces. In the case of real root representations of small defect, the non-empty cells are in one-to-one correspondence to certain, so called non-contradictory, subsets of the vertex set of a fixed tree-shaped coefficient quiver. In the second part, we use this characterization to determine the generating functions of the Euler characteristics of the quiver Grassmannians (resp. $F$-polynomials). Al…
Let $Q$ be a quiver, $M$ a representation of $Q$ with an ordered basis $\cB$ and $\ue$ a dimension vector for $Q$. In this note we extend the methods of \cite{L12} to establish Schubert decompositions of quiver Grassmannians $\Gr_\ue(M)$ into affine spaces to the ramified case, i.e.\ the canonical morphism $F:T\to Q$ from the coefficient quiver $T$ of $M$ w.r.t.\ $\cB$ is not necessarily unramified. In particular, we determine the Euler characteristic of $\Gr_\ue(M)$ as the number of \emph{extremal successor closed subsets of $T_0$}, which extends the results of Cerulli Irelli (\cite{Cerulli11…
Postnikov constructed a cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The poset of cells can be described (in particular) via Grassmann necklaces. We study certain quiver Grassmannians for the cyclic quiver admitting a cellular decomposition, whose cells are naturally labeled by Grassmann necklaces. We show that the posets of cells coincide with the reversed cell posets of the cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. We investigate algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties of these quiver Grassmannians. In particular, we describe the irreducible …
Let $Q$ be a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$. In this first of two papers, we show that the quiver Grassmannian $Gr_e(M)$ has a decomposition into affine spaces for every dimension vector $e$ and every indecomposable representation $M$ of defect $-1$ and defect $0$, with exception of the non-Schurian representations in homogeneous tubes. We characterize the affine spaces in terms of the combinatorics of a fixed coefficient quiver for $M$. The method of proof is to exhibit explicit equations for the Schubert cells of $Gr_e(M)$ and to solve this system of equations successively in linear term…
Let $k$ be a field and let $Ω$ be a universal domain over $k$. Let $f:X \r S$ be a dominant morphism defined over $k$ from a smooth projective variety $X$ to a smooth projective variety $S$ of dimension $\leq 2$ such that the general fibre of $f_Ω$ has trivial Chow group of zero-cycles. For example, $X$ could be the total space of a two-dimensional family of varieties whose general member is rationally connected. Suppose that $X$ has dimension $\leq 4$. Then we prove that $X$ has a self-dual Murre decomposition, i.e. that $X$ has a self-dual Chow--Kuenneth decomposition which satisfies Murre's…
Let U be the tautological subbundle on the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, n)$. There is a natural morphism $\mathrm{Tot}(U) \to \mathbb{A}^n$. Using it, we give a semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathrm{Tot}(U))$ into several exceptional objects and several copies of $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathbb{A}^n)$. We also prove a global version of this result: given a vector bundle $E$ with a regular section $s$, consider a subvariety of the relative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, E)$ of those subspaces which contain the value of $s$. The derived category of t…
Given a point A in the real Grassmannian, it is well-known that one can construct a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) to the KP equation. The contour plot of such a solution provides a tropical approximation to the solution when the variables x, y, and t are considered on a large scale and the time t is fixed. In this paper we use several decompositions of the Grassmannian in order to gain an understanding of the contour plots of the corresponding soliton solutions. First we use the positroid stratification of the real Grassmannian in order to characterize the unbounded line-solitons in the contour …
The degeneration of the hyperelliptic sigma function is studied. We use the Sato Grassmannian for this purpose. A simple decomposition of a rational function gives a decomposition of Plücker coordinates of a frame of the Sato Grassmannian. It then gives a decomposition of the tau function corresponding to the degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ in terms of the tau functions corresponding to a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g-1$. Since the tau functions are described by sigma functions, we get the corresponding formula for the degenerate hyperelliptic sigma function.
We prove a decomposition theorem for irreducible components of Grassmannians of submodules, as well as for other schemes arising from representation theory, thus generalising the result of Crawley-Boevey and Schroer for module varieties. The method is based on jet space calculations, using that the formation of direct sums induces a separable morphism of schemes.
Let $L$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_N$ which acts by left multiplication on a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. We say that $X(w)$ is a spherical Schubert variety if $X(w)$ is a spherical variety for the action of $L$. In earlier work we provide a combinatorial description of the decomposition of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ into irreducible $L$-modules for the induced action of $L$. In this work we classify those decompositions into irreducible $L$-modules that are multiplicity-free. This is then applied towards giving a complete classification of the spherical…
Let $Y$ be a smooth dimensionally transverse intersection of the Grassmannian $\hbox{Gr}(2,n)$ with 3 Plücker hyperplanes. We show that $Y$ admits a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of $Y$ injects into cohomology.
We show that the categorical action of the shifted $q=0$ affine algebra can be used to construct semiorthogonal decomposition on the weight categories. In particular, this construction recovers Kapranov's exceptional collection when the weight categories are the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Grassmannians and $n$-step partial flag varieties. Finally, as an application, we use this result to construct a semiorthogonal decomposition on the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Grassmannians of a coherent sheaf with homological dimension $\leq 1$ over a smooth projective variety $…
A theorem of Ryan and Wolper states that a type A Schubert variety is smooth if and only if it is an iterated fibre bundle of Grassmannians. We extend this theorem to arbitrary finite type, showing that a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety is rationally smooth if and only if it is an iterated fibre bundle of rationally smooth Grassmannian Schubert varieties. The proof depends on deep combinatorial results of Billey-Postnikov on Weyl groups. We determine all smooth and rationally smooth Grassmannian Schubert varieties, and give a new proof of Peterson's theorem that all simply-laced…
Deodhar introduced his decomposition of partial flag varieties as a tool for understanding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is also useful in the context of soliton solutions to the KP equation, as shown by Kodama and the second author. Deodhar components S_D of the Grassmannian are in bijection with certain tableaux D called Go-diagrams, and each component is isomorphic to (K*)^a \times (K)^b for some non-negative integers a and b. Our main result is an explicit parameterization of each Deodhar component in the Grassmannian in terms of networks. More …
