For a nondegenerate quadratic form phi on a vector space V of dimension 2n + 1, let X_d be the variety of d-dimensional totally isotropic subspaces of V. We give a sufficient condition for X_2 to be 2-incompressible, generalizing in a natural way the known sufficient conditions for X_1 and X_n. Key ingredients in the proof include the Chernousov-Merkurjev method of motivic decomposition as well as Pragacz and Ratajski's characterization of the Chow ring of (X_2)_E, where E is a field extension splitting phi.
We prove the following conjecture due to Bryant Mathews (2008). Let Q be the orthogonal grassmannian of totally isotropic i-planes of a non-degenerate quadratic form q over an arbitrary field (where i is an integer in the interval [1, (\dim q)/2]). If the degree of each closed point on Q is divisible by 2^i and the Witt index of q over the function field of Q is equal to i, then the variety Q is 2-incompressible.
Let X be an orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in an even dimensional vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the singular and quantum cohomology ring of X as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. Our analysis reveals a surprising relation between the Schubert calculus on even and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. We also study eta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X.
Let V be a vector space with a nondegenerate symmetric form and OG be the orthogonal Grassmannian which parametrizes maximal isotropic subspaces in V. We give a presentation for the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH^*(OG) and show that its product structure is determined by the ring of (P~)-polynomials. A "quantum Schubert calculus" is formulated, which includes quantum Pieri and Giambelli formulas, as well as algorithms for computing Gromov-Witten invariants. As an application, we show that the table of 3-point, genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for OG coincides with that for a correspondi…
For any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B,C$ and $D$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we provide a criterion for a Richardson variety in $G/P$ to admit semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$.
It is shown that the proof by Mehta and Parameswaran of Wahl's conjecture for Grassmannians in positive odd characteristics also works for symplectic and orthogonal Grassmannians.
Let $M$ be a Fano manifold, and $H^\star(M;\mathbb{C})$ be the quantum cohomology ring of $M$ with the quantum product $\star.$ For $σ\in H^*(M;\mathbb{C})$, denote by $[σ]$ the quantum multiplication operator $σ\star$ on $H^*(M;\mathbb{C})$. It was conjectured several years ago \cite{GGI, GI} and has been proved for many Fano manifols \cite{CL1, CH2, LiMiSh, Ke}, including our cases, that the operator $[c_1(M)]$ has a real valued eigenvalue $δ_0$ which is maximal among eigenvaules of $[c_1(M)]$. Galkin's lower bound conjecture \cite{Ga} states that for a Fano manifold $M,$ $δ_0\geq \mathrm{di…
We prove that any three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a type A Grassmannian is equal to a classical intersection number on a two-step flag variety. We also give symplectic and orthogonal analogues of this result; in these cases the two-step flag variety is replaced by a sub-maximal isotropic Grassmannian. Our theorems are applied, in type A, to formulate a conjectural quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule, and in the other classical Lie types, to obtain new proofs of the main structure theorems for the quantum cohomology of Lagrangian and orthogonal Grassmannians.
In this article, we make a close analysis on quantum multiplication operators on the quantum cohomology rings of Lagrangian and orthogonal Grassmannians, and give an explicit description on all simultaneous eigenvectors and the corresponding eigenvalues for these operators. As a result, we show that Conjecture $\mathcal{O}$ of Galkin, Golyshev and Iritani holds for these manifolds.
We study projective homogeneous varieties under an action of a projective unitary group (of outer type). We are especially interested in the case of (unitary) grassmannians of totally isotropic subspaces of a hermitian form over a field, the main result saying that these grassmannians are 2-incompressible if the hermitian form is generic. Applications to orthogonal grassmannians are provided.
A Richardson variety $X_\ga^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian is defined to be the intersection of a Schubert variety $X^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian and a opposite Schubert variety $X_\ga$ therein. We give an explicit description of the initial ideal (with respect to certain conveniently chosen term order) for the ideal of the tangent cone at any $T$-fixed point of $X_\ga^\gc$, thus generalizing a result of Raghavan-Upadhyay \cite{Ra-Up2}. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the Orthogonal bounded RSK (OBRSK). The…
We verify in an elementary way a result of Peterson for the maximal orthogonal and Lagrangian Grassmannians, and then find Vafa-Intriligator type formulas which compute their 3-point, genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. Finally we study total positivity of the related Peterson varieties and show that Rietsch's conjecture about the total positivity holds for these cases.
We show that general isotropic flags for odd-orthogonal and symplectic groups are general for Schubert calculus on the classical Grassmannian in that Schubert cells defined by such flags meet transversally. This strengthens a result of Belkale and Kumar in arXiv:0708.0398.
In this paper we show examples of computations achieved using the formulas of our previous paper, which express the push-forwards in equivariant cohomology as iterated residues at infinity. We consider the equivariant cohomology of the complex Lagrangian Grassmannian $LG(n)$ and the orthogonal Grassmannian with the action of the maximal torus. In particular, we show how to obtain some well-known results due to P. Pragacz and J. Ratajski on integrals of Schur polynomials over the Lagrangian Grassmannian $LG(n)$ and the orthogonal Grassmannian $OG(n)$.
We study the double Grothendieck polynomials of Kirillov--Naruse for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. These functions are explicitly written as sums of Pfaffian and are identified with the stable limits of the fundamental classes of Schubert varieties in the torus equivariant connective K-theory of these isotropic Grassmannians. We also provide a combinatorial description of the ring formally spanned by double Grothendieck polynomials.
We construct a full exceptional collection of vector bundles in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian of isotropic two-dimensional subspaces in a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$ and in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian of isotropic two-dimensional subspaces in an orthogonal vector space of dimension $2n + 1$ for all $n$.
Let $G=SO(8n+4,\mathbb{C})$ ($n\ge 1$). Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $P (\supset B)$ denote the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n+2}$. In this article, we prove projective normality of the GIT quotients of certain Schubert varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian $G/P$ with respect to the descent of a suitable $T$-linearized very ample line bundle.
We compute the initial ideals, with respect to certain conveniently chosen term orders, of ideals of tangent cones at torus fixed points to Schubert varieties in orthogonal Grassmannians. The initial ideals turn out to be square-free monomial ideals and therefore Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes. We describe these complexes. The maximal faces of these complexes encode certain sets of non-intersecting lattice paths.
Let Gr(2, E) be the Grassmann bundle of two-planes associated to a general bundle E over a curve X. We prove that an embedding of Gr(2, E) by a certain twist of the relative Plücker map is not secant defective. This yields a new and more geometric proof of the Hirschowitz-type bound on the Lagrangian Segre invariant for orthogonal bundles over X, analogous to those given for vector bundles and symplectic bundles in [2, 3]. From the non-defectivity we also deduce an interesting feature of a general orthogonal bundle over X, contrasting with the classical and symplectic cases: Any maximal Lagran…
Let $X$ be a connected component of the maximal orthogonal grassmannian of a generic $n$-dimensional quadratic form $q$ with trivial Clifford invariant. Consider the canonical epimorphism $ϕ$ from the Chow ring of $X$ to the associated graded ring of the coniveau filtration on the Grothendieck ring of $X$. In \cite{Kar2018} Karpenko proved that $ϕ$ is an isomorphism for all $n\leq 12$ (conjecturally for all $n$). Recently, in \cite{Yagita} Yagita showed that $ϕ$ is not an isomorphism for $n=17, 18$. In the present paper, together with Yagita's results for $n=17,18$, we show that the map $ϕ$ is…
We develop a combinatorial rule to compute the real geometry of type B Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$ in the orthogonal Grassmannian $\mathrm{OG}_n$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to orthogonal flags osculating the rational normal curve. Our results are natural analogs of results previously known only in type A. First, using the type B Wronski map, we show that the real locus of the Schubert curve has a natural covering map to $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with monodromy operator $ω$ defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion on skew shifted se…
In this paper we compute the dimension of the Grassmann embeddings of the polar Grassmannians associated to a possibly degenerate Hermitian, alternating or quadratic form with possibly non-maximal Witt index. Moreover, in the characteristic $2$ case, when the form is quadratic and non-degenerate with bilinearization of minimal Witt index, we define a generalization of the so-called Weyl embedding (see [I. Cardinali and A. Pasini, Grassmann and Weyl embeddings of orthogonal Grassmannians. J. Algebr. Combin. 38 (2013), 863-888]) and prove that the Grassmann embedding is a quotient of this genera…
We prove that the moduli spaces of parabolic symplectic/orthogonal bundles on a smooth curve are globally F regular type. As a consequence, all higher cohomology of theta line bundle vanish. During the proof, we develop a method to estimate codimension, and consider the infinite grassmannians for parabolic $G$ bundles.
We prove Pieri formulas for the multiplication with special Schubert classes in the K-theory of all cominuscule Grassmannians. For Grassmannians of type A this gives a new proof of a formula of Lenart. Our formula is new for Lagrangian Grassmannians, and for orthogonal Grassmannians it proves a special case of a conjectural Littlewood-Richardson rule of Thomas and Yong. Recent work of Thomas and Yong and of E. Clifford has shown that the full Littlewood-Richardson rule for orthogonal Grassmannians follows from the Pieri case proved here. We describe the K-theoretic Pieri coefficients both as i…
In this paper we investigate linear error correcting codes and projective caps related to the Grassmann embedding $\varepsilon_k^{gr}$ of an orthogonal Grassmannian $Δ_k$. In particular, we determine some of the parameters of the codes arising from the projective system determined by $\varepsilon_k^{gr}(Δ_k)$. We also study special sets of points of $Δ_k$ which are met by any line of $Δ_k$ in at most 2 points and we show that their image under the Grassmann embedding $\varepsilon_k^{gr}$ is a projective cap.
A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a ce…
We express a Schubert expansion of the Chern-Mather class for Schubert varieties in the even orthogonal Grassmannian via integrals involving Pfaffians and pushforward of the small resolutions in the sense of Intersection Cohomology (IH) constructed by Sankaran and Vanchinathan, instead of the Nash blowup. The equivariant localization is employed to show the way of computing the integral. As a byproduct, we present the computations. For analogy and the completion of the method in ordinary Grassmannians, we also suggest Kazhdan-Lusztig classes associated to Schubert varieties in the Lagrangian a…
Scattering amplitudes in 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) can be described by Grassmannian contour integrals whose form depends on whether the external data is encoded in momentum space, twistor space, or momentum twistor space. After a pedagogical review, we present a new, streamlined proof of the equivalence of the three integral formulations. A similar strategy allows us to derive a new Grassmannian integral for 3d $\mathcal{N}=6$ ABJM theory amplitudes in momentum twistor space: it is a contour integral in an orthogonal Grassmannian with the novel property that the internal…
The aim of this paper is to study codimension one foliations on rational homogeneous spaces, with a focus on the moduli space of foliations of low degree on Grassmannians and cominuscule spaces. Using equivariant techniques, we show that codimension one degree zero foliations on (ordinary, orthogonal, symplectic) Grassmannians of lines, some spinor varieties, some Lagrangian Grassmannians, the Cayley plane (an $E_6$-variety) and the Freudenthal variety (an $E_7$-variety) are identified with restrictions of foliations on the ambient projective space. We also provide some evidence that such resu…
Let $G=Spin(8n, \mathbb{C})(n\ge 1)$ and $T_{G}$ be a maximal torus of $G.$ Let $P^{α_{4n}}(\supset T_{G})$ be the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n}.$ Let $X$ be a Schubert variety in $G/P^{α_{4n}}$ admitting semi-stable point with respect to the $T$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{4n}).$ Let $R=\bigoplus_{k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}}R_k,$ where $R_k=H^{0}(X, \mathcal{L}^{\otimes k}(2ω_{4n}))^{T_{G}}.$ In this article, we prove that for $n=1$ and $X=G/P^{α_4},$ the graded $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $R$ is generated by $R_1.$ As a consequence,…
Restriction varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian are subvarieties of $OG(k, n)$ defined by rank conditions given by a flag that is not necessarily isotropic with respect to the relevant symmetric bilinear form. In particular, Schubert varieties of Type B and D are examples of restriction varieties. In this paper, we introduce a resolution of singularities for restriction varieties in $OG(k, n)$, and give a description of their singular locus by studying components of the exceptional locus of the resolution.
In this article we construct Laurent polynomial Landau-Ginzburg models for cominuscule homogeneous spaces. These Laurent polynomial potentials are defined on a particular algebraic torus inside the Lie-theoretic mirror model constructed for arbitrary homogeneous spaces in arXiv:math/0511124. The Laurent polynomial takes a similar shape to the one given in arXiv:alg-geom/9603021 for projective complete intersections, i.e. it is the sum of the toric coordinates plus a quantum term. We also give a general enumeration method for the summands in the quantum term of the potential in terms of the qui…
