In this paper we investigate what kind of manifolds arise as the total spaces of iterated $S^1$-bundles. A real Bott tower studied in \cite{CMO}, \cite{KM} and \cite{KN} is an example of an iterated $S^1$-bundle. We show that the total space of an iterated $S^1$-bundle is homeomorphic to an infra-nilmanifold. A real Bott manifold, which is the total space of a real Bott tower, provides an example of a closed flat Riemannian manifold. We also show that real Bott manifolds are the only closed flat Riemannian manifolds obtained from iterated $\bbr{P}^1$-bundles. Finally we classify the homeomorphism types of the total spaces of iterated $S^1$-bundles in dimension 3.
We introduce a new variant of Hochschild's two-sided bar construction for the setting of curved differential graded algebras. One can geometrically think of the classical bar complex as elements from the algebra positioned along different points in the closed interval $[0,1]$. In this paper, we start with a curved differential graded algebra and define a new ``zigzag algebra'' that, informally, consists of algebra elements arranged on a zigzag of intervals going back and forth between $0$ and $1$. We focus on two curved differential graded algebras: the de Rham algebra of differential forms wi…
Let X be a simply connected Riemannian manifold. Until now, quantitative topology has used Sullivan's rational homotopy theory as the bridge between geometric information on X and torsion-free homotopy theoretic information on X. In this paper we introduce Chen's iterated integrals on the based loop space of X as a new bridge between these two areas. We give two applications: finding upper bounds for Gromov's distortion of higher homotopy groups on X and also proving the non-existence of homologically non-trivial small-volume cycles in the space of loops on X of length at most L.
We introduce a periodic form of the iterated algebraic K-theory of ku, the (connective) complex K-theory spectrum, as well as a natural twisting of this cohomology theory by higher gerbes. Furthermore, we prove a form of topological T-duality for sphere bundles oriented with respect to this theory.
In this paper we study the topological structure of moment-angle complexes $\mathcal{Z_K}$. We consider two classes of simplicial complexes. The first class $B_Δ$ consists of simplicial complexes $\mathcal{K}$ for which $\mathcal{Z_K}$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge spheres. The second class $W_Δ$ consists of $\mathcal{K}\in B_Δ$ such that all spheres in the wedge are realized by iterated higher Whitehead products. Buchstaber and Panov asked if it is true that $B_Δ = W_Δ$. In this paper we show that this is not the case. Namely, we give an example of a simplicial complex whose corresponding…
在本文中,我们调查的行为的Serre谱序列相对于代数结构的弦拓扑在广义同调论,特别是与Chas-Sullivan产品和相应的余产品和模块结构。我们证明了两类纤维丛的相容性:$h_*$-定向流形$M$的纤维丛$Ω^n M \to L^n M \to M$和$h_*$ -定向流形的纤维丛$F \to E \to B$的环状纤维丛$L^n F \to L^n E \to L^n B$.我们的方法在于构造谱序列的Gysin态射。我们应用这些结果研究了球丛的自由圈空间的普通同调以及球和射影空间的自由圈空间的广义同调。
This survey provides an introduction to basic questions and techniques surrounding the topology of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface. Through examples, we demonstrate how the structure of the cohomology ring of the moduli space leads to interesting questions of a combinatorial nature.
The smooth action of a compact Lie group on a compact manifold can be resolved to an iterated space, as made explicit by Pierre Albin and the second author. On the resolution the lifted action has fixed isotropy type, in an iterated sense, with connecting fibrations and this structure descends to a resolution of the quotient. For an abelian group action the equivariant K-theory can then be described in terms of bundles over the base with morphisms covering the connecting maps. A similar model is given, in terms of appropriately twisted deRham forms over the base as an iterated space, for deloc…
We investigate a PL topology question: which circle bundles can be triangulated over a given triangulation of the base? The question got a simple answer emphasizing the role of minimal triangulations encoded by local systems of circular permutations of vertices of the base simplices. The answer is based on an experimental fact: classical Huntington transitivity axiom for cyclic orders can be expressed as the universal binary Chern cocycle.
Datasets with non-trivial large scale topology can be hard to embed in low-dimensional Euclidean space with existing dimensionality reduction algorithms. We propose to model topologically complex datasets using vector bundles, in such a way that the base space accounts for the large scale topology, while the fibers account for the local geometry. This allows one to reduce the dimensionality of the fibers, while preserving the large scale topology. We formalize this point of view, and, as an application, we describe an algorithm which takes as input a dataset together with an initial representa…
