In these lecture notes we discuss a body of work in which Morse theory is used to construct various homology and cohomology operations. In the classical setting of algebraic topology this is done by constructing a moduli space of graph flows, using homotopy theoretic methods to construct a virtual fundamental class, and evaluating cohomology classes on this fundamental class. By using similar constructions based on "fat" or ribbon graphs, we describe how to construct string topology operations on the loop space of a manifold, using Morse theoretic techniques. Finally, we discuss how to relate these string topology operations to the counting of J - holomorphic curves in the cotangent bundle. We end with speculations about the relationship between the absolute and relative Gromov-Witten theory of the cotangent bundle, and the open-closed string topology of the underlying manifold.
The Morse-Bott inequalities relate the topology of a closed manifold to the topology of the critical point set of a Morse-Bott function defined on it. The Morse-Bott inequalities are sometimes stated under incorrect orientation assumptions. We show that these assumptions are insufficient with an explicit counterexample and clarify the origin of the mistake.
Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface, and let $F$ be the space of Morse functions on $M$ such that at least $χ(M)+1$ critical points of each function of $F$ are labeled by different labels (enumerated). Endow the space $F$ with $C^\infty$-topology. We prove the homotopy equivalence $F\sim R\times{\widetilde{\cal M}}$ where $R$ is one of the manifolds ${\mathbb R}P^3$, $S^1\times S^1$ and the point in dependence on the sign of $χ(M)$, and ${\widetilde{\cal M}}$ is the universal moduli space of framed Morse functions, which is a smooth stratified manifold. Morse inequalities for the Bet…
Classical Morse theory proceeds by considering sublevel sets $f^{-1}(-\infty, a]$ of a Morse function $f: M \to R$, where $M$ is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. In this paper, we study the topology of the level sets $f^{-1}(a)$ and give conditions under which the topology of $f^{-1}(a)$ changes when passing a critical value. We show that for a general class of functions, which includes all exhaustive Morse function, the topology of a regular level $f^{-1}(a)$ always changes when passing a single critical point, unless the index of the critical point is half the dimension of the manifold …
This paper begins the study of Morse theory for orbifolds, or more precisely for differentiable Deligne-Mumford stacks. The main result is an analogue of the Morse inequalities that relates the orbifold Betti numbers of an almost-complex orbifold to the critical points of a Morse function on the orbifold. We also show that a generic function on an orbifold is Morse. In obtaining these results we develop for differentiable Deligne-Mumford stacks those tools of differential geometry and topology -- flows of vector fields, the strong topology -- that are essential to the development of Morse theo…
Let M be a closed, oriented, n-dimensional manifold. In this paper we give a Morse theoretic description of the string topology operations introduced by Chas and Sullivan, and extended by the first author, Jones, Godin, and others. We do this by studying maps from surfaces with cylindrical ends to M, such that on the cylinders, they satisfy the gradient flow equation of a Morse function on the loop space, LM. We then give Morse theoretic descriptions of related constructions, such as the Thom and Euler classes of a vector bundle, as well as the shriek, or unkehr homomorphism.
We show that the sublinearly Morse boundary of a CAT(0) cubical group with a factor system is well-defined up to homeomorphism with respect to the visual topology. The key tool used in the proof is a new topology on sublinearly Morse boundaries that is induced by group actions on hyperbolic spaces that are sufficiently nice, for example, largest acylindrical actions. Using the same techniques, we obtain a explicit description of this new topology on the sublinearly Morse boundary of any hierarchically hyperbolic group in terms of medians. Finally, we explicitly describe the sublinear Morse bou…
1) We introduce random discrete Morse theory as a computational scheme to measure the complicatedness of a triangulation. The idea is to try to quantify the frequence of discrete Morse matchings with a certain number of critical cells. Our measure will depend on the topology of the space, but also on how nicely the space is triangulated. (2) The scheme we propose looks for optimal discrete Morse functions with an elementary random heuristic. Despite its naïveté, this approach turns out to be very successful even in the case of huge inputs. (3) In our view the existing libraries of examples in …
Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface. Let $F$ be the space of Morse functions on $M$ having fixed number of critical points of each index, moreover at least $χ(M)+1$ critical points are labeled by different labels (enumerated). A notion of a skew cylindric-polyhedral complex, which generalizes the notion of a polyhedral complex, is introduced. The skew cylindric-polyhedral complex $\mathbb{\widetilde K}$ (the "complex of framed Morse functions"), associated with the space $F$, is defined. In the case when $M=S^2$, the polyhedron $\mathbb{\widetilde K}$ is finite; its Euler characteris…
Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface. Let $F$ be the space of Morse functions on $M$, and $\mathbb{F}^1$ the space of framed Morse functions, both endowed with $C^\infty$-topology. The space $\mathbb{F}^0$ of special framed Morse functions is defined. We prove that the inclusion mapping $\mathbb{F}^0\hookrightarrow\mathbb{F}^1$ is a homotopy equivalence. In the case when at least $χ(M)+1$ critical points of each function of $F$ are labeled, homotopy equivalences $\mathbb{\widetilde K}\sim\widetilde{\cal M}$ and $F\sim\mathbb{F}^0\sim{\mathscr D}^0\times\mathbb{\widetilde K}$ are prove…
We study topology change in (2+1)D gravity coupling with non-Abelian SO(2,1) Higgs field from the point of view of Morse theory. It is shown that the Higgs potential can be identified as a Morse function. The critical points of the latter (i.e. loci of change of the spacetime topology) coincide with zeros of the Higgs field. In these critical points two-dimensional metric becomes degenerate, but the curvature remains bounded.
We define a coalgebra structure for open strings transverse to any framed codimension 2 submanifold. When the submanifold is a knot in R^3, we show this structure recovers a specialization of the Ng cord algebra, a non-trivial knot invariant which is not determined by a number of other knot invariants.
We study codimension one foliations with singularities defined locally by Bott-Morse functions on closed oriented manifolds. We carry to this setting the classical concepts of holonomy of invariant sets and stability, and prove a stability theorem in the spirit of the local stability theorem of Reeb. This yields, among other things, a good topological understanding of the leaves one may have around a center-type component of the singular set, and also of the topology of its basin. The stability theorem further allows the description of the topology of the boundary of the basin and how the topo…
This paper describes how to recover the topology of a closed manifold $M$ from a good Morse function $f$ on $M$. The essential method was suggested by Cohen, Jones and Segal. They constructed a topological category $C_{f}$ and claimed that the classifying space $BC_{f}$ is homeomorphic to $M$. We prove it from a different viewpoint with them using a cell decomposition of $M$ associated to $f$. The cell complex $M_{f}$ equipped with the decomposition induces a topological category $C(M_{f})$ whose classifying space $BC(M_{f})$ is homeomorphic to $M$. We show that $C(M_{f})$ is isomorphic to $C_…
Scharlemann and Thompson define the width of a 3-manifold M as a notion of complexity based on the topology of M. Their original definition had the property that the adjacency relation on handles gave a linear order on handles, but here we consider a more general definition due to Saito, Scharlemann and Schultens, in which the adjacency relation on handles may give an arbitrary graph. We show that for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds, this is linearly related to a notion of metric complexity, based on the areas of level sets of Morse functions to graphs, which we call Gromov area.
We construct a space of string diagrams, which are a type of fatgraph with some additional data, and show that there are string topology operations on the chains of the free loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold which are parameterized by the chains on the space of string diagrams. These operations are shown to recover known structure on homology of the free loop space.
According to Kiyoshi Igusa a generalized Morse function on an n-dimensional manifold M is a smooth function with only Morse and birth-death singularities and a framed function is a generalized Morse function with an additional structure: a framing of the negative eigenspace at each critical point of the function f. In his paper "The space of framed functions" (Trans. of Amer. Math. Soc., 301(1987), 431-477) Igusa proved that the space of framed generalized Morse functions is (n-1)-connected. In the paper "On the Classification of Topological Field Theories" (arXiv:0905.0465) Jacob Lurie gave a…
By a gradient-like flow on a closed orientable surface $M$, we mean a closed 1-form $β$ defined on $M$ punctured at a finite set of points (sources and sinks of $β$) such that there exists a Morse function $f$ on $M$, called an energy function of $β$, whose critical points coincide with equilibria of $β$, and the pair $(f,β)$ has a canonical form near each critical point of $f$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\mathcal{B}(β_0)$ be the space of all gradient-like flows on $M$ having the same types of local singularities as a flow $β_0$, and $\mathcal{F}=\mathcal{F}(f_0)$ the space of all Morse functions on $M$…
Using intersection theory in the context of Hilbert manifolds and geometric homology we show how to recover the main operations of string topology built by M. Chas and D. Sullivan. We also study and build an action of the homology of reduced Sullivan's chord diagrams on the singular homology of free loop spaces, extending previous results of R. Cohen and V. Godin and unifying part of the rich algebraic structure of string topology as an algebra over the prop of these reduced diagrams. Some of these operations are extended to spaces of maps from a sphere to a compact manifold.
Given a smooth closed manifold M with a family {L_i} of closed submanifolds, we consider the free loop space LM and the spaces PM(L_i,L_j) of open strings (paths g:[0,1]->M with g(0) in L_i, and g(1) in L_j). We construct string topology operations resulting in an open-closed TQFT on the family (h_*(LM),h_*(PM(L_i,L_j)) which extends the known string topology TQFT on h_*(LM). Here, h_* is a multiplicative generalized homology theory supporting orientations for M and the L_i. To construct the operations, we introduce the notion of open-closed fat graph, generalizing fat graphs to the open-close…
This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how stri…
In this paper we study the topology of the cobordism category of open and closed strings. This is a 2-category in which the objects are compact one-manifolds whose boundary components are labeled by an indexing set (the set of "D-branes"), the 1-morphisms are cobordisms of manifolds with boundary, and the 2-morphisms are diffeomorphisms of the surface cobordisms. Our methods and techniques are direct generalizations of those used by U. Tillmann in her study of the category of closed strings. We input the striking theorem of Madsen and Weiss regarding the topology of the stable mapping class gr…
There is an interpretation of open string field theory in algebraic topology. An interpretation of closed string field theory can be deduced from this open string theory to obtain as well the interpretation of open and closed string field theory combined.
This paper explains the conjectured algebraic duality between genus zero Gromov-Witten theory and genus zero "Closed String topology". This duality in another perspective is discussed on page 87 of the book "Frobenius manifold, quantum cohomology, and moduli spaces" (by Yuri Manin). This paper also discusses Fulton MacPherson strata.
Smooth functions which are Morse on preimages of values not being local extrema and constructing natural functions of the class on connected sums of manifolds admitting these functions
Relations between the string topology of Chas and Sullivan and the homotopy skein modules of Hoste and Przytycki are studied. This provides new insight into the structure of homotopy skein modules and their meaning in the framework of quantum topology. Our results can be considered as weak extensions to all orientable 3-manifolds of classical results by Turaev and Goldman concerning intersection and skein theory on oriented surfaces.
We study elliptic fibrations by analyzing suitable deformations of the fibrations and vanishing cycles. We introduce geometric string junctions and describe some of their properties. We show how the structure of the geometric string junctions is naturally related to the Lie algebra structures of the associated singularities. One application in physics is in F-theory, where our novel approach connecting deformations and Lie algebras describes the structure of generalized type IIB seven-branes and string junction states which end on them.
