A new model to describe the dynamics of particles undergoing diffusion in general relativity is proposed. The evolution of the particle system is described by a Fokker-Planck equation without friction on the tangent bundle of spacetime. It is shown that the energy-momentum tensor for this matter model is not divergence-free, which makes it inconsistent to couple the Fokker-Planck equation to the Einstein equations. This problem can be solved by postulating the existence of additional matter fields in spacetime or by modifying the Einstein equations. The case of a cosmological scalar field term added to the left hand side of the Einstein equations is studied in some details. For the simplest cosmological model, namely the flat Robertson-Walker spacetime, it is shown that, depending on the initial value of the cosmological scalar field, which can be identified with the present observed value of the cosmological constant, either unlimited expansion or the formation of a singularity in finite time will occur in the future. Future collapse into a singularity also takes place for a suitable small but positive present value of the cosmological constant, in contrast to the standard diffusion-free scenario.
In a fully inhomogeneous, anisotropic cosmological simulation performed by solving Einstein's equations with numerical relativity, we find a local measurement of the effective Hubble parameter differs by less than 1\% compared to the global value. This variance is consistent with predictions from Newtonian gravity. We analyse the averaged local expansion rate on scales comparable to Type 1a supernova surveys, and find that local variance cannot resolve the tension between the \citet{riess2018b} and \citet{planck2018a} measurements.
In this paper I investigate the possibility to test Einstein's equations with observations of cosmological large scale structure. I first show that we have not tested the equations in observations concerning only the homogeneous and isotropic Universe. I then show with several examples how we can do better when considering the fluctuations of both, the energy momentum tensor and the metric. This is illustrated with galaxy number counts, intensity mapping and cosmic shear, three examples that are by no means exhaustive.
In this work we examine what are the cosmological implications of allowing the geometrical curvature density to behave independently from the energy density contents. Using the full data extracted by Planck mission from CMB, combined with BAO and SNIa measurements, we derive, in the light of this approach, new constraints on the cosmological parameters. In particular we determine the behavior of the curvature dark energy degeneracy when allowing a varying equation of state for the latter. We also examine whether this approach could bridge the gap recently found between the Hubble parameter val…
We perform large-scale cosmological simulations that solve Einstein's equations directly via numerical relativity. Starting with initial conditions sampled from the cosmic microwave background, we track the emergence of a cosmic web without the need for a background cosmology. We measure the backreaction of large-scale structure on the evolution of averaged quantities in a matter-dominated universe. Although our results are preliminary, we find the global backreaction energy density is of order $10^{-8}$ compared to the energy density of matter in our simulations, and is thus unlikely to expla…
We provide a new extension of general relativity (GR) which has the remarkable property of being more constrained than GR plus a cosmological constant, having one less free parameter. This is implemented by allowing the cosmological constant to have a consistent space-time variation, through coding its dynamics in the torsion tensor. We demonstrate this mechanism by adding a `quasi-topological' term to the Einstein action, which naturally realizes a dynamical torsion with an automatic satisfaction of the Bianchi identities. Moreover, variation of the action with respect to this dynamical $Λ$ f…
This thesis investigates a toy model for inflation in a class of modified theories of gravity in the metric formalism. Instead of the standard procedure -- assuming a non-linear Lagrangian $f(R)$ in the Jordan frame -- we start from a simple ϕ^2 potential in the Einstein frame and investigate the corresponding $f(R)$ in the former picture. Such approach yields plenty of new pieces of information, namely a self-terminating inflationary solution with a linear Lagrangian, a robust criterion for stability of such theories, a dynamical effective potential for the Ricci scalar $R$, the addition of a…
We find initial data for numerical relativity simulations of inhomogeneous cosmologies. This involves treating an exceptional case of the general relativity constraint equations. We devise analytic and numerical methods to treat this exceptional case. We apply the analytic method to the standard case of cosmology with a single scalar field. The numerical method is applied to the two-field ekpyrotic cosmology.
Unimodular Gravity is one of the oldest geometric gravity theory alternative to General Relativity. Essentially, it is based on the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an additional constraint on the determinant of the metric. It can be explicitly shown that Unimodular Gravity can be recast as General Relativity in presence of a cosmological constant. This fact has led to many discussions on the equivalence of both theories at classical and quantum levels. Here we present an analysis focused on the classical scalar perturbations around a cosmological background. The discussion is extended for the…
Tilted two fluids cosmological models with variable G and Λ In General Relativity are presented. Here one fluid is matter field modelling material content of the universe and another fluid is radiation field modelling the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The tiltedness is also considered .To get the deterministic model, we have assumed a supplementary condition where s and n are constants. We have also discussed the behaviours of some physical parameters.
We expand the dynamical systems investigation of cosmological scalar fields characterised by kinetic corrections presented in [N. Tamanini, Phys. Rev. D 89 (2014) 083521]. In particular we do not restrict the analysis to exponential potentials only, but we consider arbitrary scalar field potentials and derive general results regarding the corresponding cosmological dynamics. Two specific potentials are then used as examples to show how these models can be employed not only to describe dark energy, but also to achieve dynamical crossing of the phantom barrier at late times. Stability and viabil…
Tests of general relativity (GR) are still in their infancy on cosmological scales, but forthcoming experiments promise to greatly improve their precision over a wide range of distance scales and redshifts. One such experiment, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), will carry out several wide and deep surveys of resolved and unresolved neutral hydrogen (HI) 21cm line-emitting galaxies, mapping a significant fraction of the sky from $0 \le z \lesssim 6$. I present forecasts for the ability of a suite of possible SKA HI surveys to detect deviations from GR by reconstructing the cosmic expansion and …
We show in a new way that the general relativity action (and Lagrangian)in recent Einstein-Palatini formulation is equivalent in four dimensions to the action (and Lagrangian) of a gauge field. This paper is a continuation of the previous paper [17] and it also gives an amended version of the lecture delivered by one of the authors [M.D.] at Hypercomplex Seminar in Bedlewo.
We study flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological models for a scalar field coupled nonminimally to teleparallel gravity with generic coupling and potential functions. The goal of this paper is to determine the conditions under which the cosmological evolution tends to the limit where the variation of the gravitational "constant" ceases and the system evolves close to general relativity. These conditions can be read off from the approximate analytical solutions describing the process in matter and potential domination eras. Only those models where the GR limit exists and is an att…
Most cosmological data analysis today relies on the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric, providing the basis of the current standard cosmological model. Within this framework, interesting tensions between our increasingly precise data and theoretical predictions are coming to light. It is therefore reasonable to explore the potential for cosmological analysis outside of the exact FLRW cosmological framework. In this work we adopt the general luminosity-distance series expansion in redshift with no assumptions of homogeneity or isotropy. This framework will allow for a full model-…
Cosmological simulations involving the fully covariant gravitational dynamics may prove relevant in understanding relativistic/non-linear features and, therefore, in taking better advantage of the upcoming large scale structure survey data. We propose a new 3+1 integration scheme for General Relativity in the case where the matter sector contains a minimally-coupled perfect fluid field. The original feature is that we completely eliminate the fluid components through the constraint equations, thus remaining with a set of unconstrained evolution equations for the rest of the fields. This proced…
In the paper we show that the general relativity action (and Lagrangian) in recent Einstein-Palatini formulation is equivalent to the action (and Langrangian) of a gauge field. We begin with a bit of information of the Einstein-Palatini (EP) action, then we present how Einstein fields equations can be derived from it. In the next section, we consider Einstein-Palatini action integral for general relativity with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$ in terms of $\hat{F}$, the curvature of the affine connection's pulled back from de Sitter bundle to Lorentz bundle. We will see that in terms of $\…
The application of numerical relativity to cosmological spacetimes is providing new insights into the behavior of Einstein's equations, beyond common approximations. In order for simulations to be performed as accurately and efficiently as possible, we investigate a novel formulation of Einstein's equations. This formulation evolves differences from a "reference" solution describing the dominant behavior of the spacetime, which mitigates error due to both truncation and approximate finite difference calculations. We find that the error in solutions obtained using the reference formulation can …
The nonextensive kinetic theory for degenerate quantum gases is discussed in the general relativistic framework. By incorporating nonadditive modifications in the collisional term of the relativistic Boltzmann equation and entropy current, it is shown that Tsallis entropic framework satisfies a H-theorem in the presence of gravitational fields. Consistency with the 2nd law of thermodynamics is obtained only whether the entropic q-parameter lies in the interval $q \in [0,2]$. As occurs in the absence of gravitational fields, it is also proved that the local collisional equilibrium is described …
We find a simple modification of the longitudinal mode in General Relativity which incorporates the idea of limiting curvature. In this case the singularities in contracting Friedmann and Kasner universes are avoided, and instead, the universe has a regular bounce which takes place during the time inversely proportional to the square root of the limiting curvature. Away from the bounce, corrections to General Relativity are negligible. In addition the non-singluar modification of General Relativity delivers for free a realistic candidate for Dark Matter.
