We study n-string scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space (AdS3). We focus our attention on the processes in which the winding number conservation is violated maximally; that is, those processes in which it is violated in n-2 units. A worldsheet conformal field theory calculation leads us to confirm a previous conjecture about the functional form of these observables.
Closed string field theory is constructed by stochastically quantizing a matrix model for Polyakov loops that describes phases of a large N gauge theory at finite temperature. Coherent states in this string field theory describes winding string condensation which has been expected to cause a topology change from thermal AdS geometry to AdS-Schwarzschild black hole geometry. D-branes in this closed string field theory is also discussed. Slightly extended version of a talk given at CosPA 2007, Nov.13-15, Taipei, Taiwan.
It has recently been shown that the low energy dynamics of the large $N$ gauge theory on $S^3$ at finite temperature reduces to a one-matrix model, where the matrix is given by the holonomy of the gauge field around the Euclidean time direction compactified on a circle. On the other hand, there is a prescription for constructing a closed string field theory in the temporal gauge from a given one-matrix model via loop equations. I identify the closed string field theory in the temporal gauge constructed from the above matrix model as effective closed string field theory that describes the propa…
We obtain exact analytical solutions for a class of SO($l$) Higgs field theories in a non-dynamic background $n$-dimensional anti de Sitter space. These finite transverse energy solutions are maximally symmetric $p$-dimensional topological defects where $n=(p+1)+l$. The radius of curvature of anti de Sitter space provides an extra length scale that allows us to study the equations of motion in a limit where the masses of the Higgs field and the massive vector bosons are both vanishing. We call this the double BPS limit. In anti de Sitter space, the equations of motion depend on both $p$ and $l…
Maximally extended, explicit and regular coverings of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter family of vacua are given, first in spacetime (generalizing a result due to Israel) and then for all dimensions $D$ (assuming a $D-2$ sphere). It is shown that these coordinates offer important advantages over the well known Kruskal - Szekeres procedure.
We discuss a Coulomb gas realization of $n$-point correlation functions in the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model that is suitable to compute scattering amplitudes of winding strings in 3-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space at tree-level and one-loop. This is a refined version of previously proposed free-field realizations that, among other features, accomplishes to make the $H_3^+$ WZW-Liouville correspondence manifest.
We present a framework for de Sitter model building in type IIA string theory, illustrated with specific examples. We find metastable dS minima of the potential for moduli obtained from a compactification on a product of two Nil three-manifolds (which have negative scalar curvature) combined with orientifolds, branes, fractional Chern-Simons forms, and fluxes. As a discrete quantum number is taken large, the curvature, field strengths, inverse volume, and four dimensional string coupling become parametrically small, and the de Sitter Hubble scale can be tuned parametrically smaller than the sc…
We test the robustness of the conditions required for the existence of (supersymmetric) warped flux anti-de Sitter, de Sitter, and Minkowski backgrounds in supergravity theories using as examples suitable foliations of anti-de Sitter spaces. We find that there are supersymmetric de Sitter solutions in supergravity theories including maximally supersymmetric ones in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravities. Moreover, warped flux Minkowski backgrounds can admit Killing spinors which are not Killing on the Minkowski subspace and therefore cannot be put in a factorized form.
There are five maximally supersymmetric backgrounds in four-dimensional off-shell N=1 supergravity, two of which are well known: Minkowski superspace M^{4|4} and anti-de Sitter superspace AdS^{4|4}. The three remaining supermanifolds support spacetimes of different topology, which are: R x S^3, AdS_3 x R, and a supersymmetric plane wave isometric to the Nappi-Witten group. As is well known, the Minkowski and anti-de Sitter superspaces are solutions of the Poincaré and anti-de Sitter supergravity theories, respectively. Here we demonstrate that the other three superspaces are solutions of no-sc…
We study maximally supersymmetric solutions of all gauged or deformed supergravity theories in $D \ge 3$ space-time dimensions. For vanishing background fluxes the space-time background has to be either Minkowski or anti-de Sitter. We derive a simple criterion for the existence of solutions with non-trivial fluxes and determine all supergravities that satisfy it. We show that their solutions coincide with those of the corresponding ungauged theories and conclude that the known list of maximally supersymmetric solutions is exhaustive.
We quantize linearized Einstein-Hilbert gravity on de Sitter backgrounds in a covariant gauge. We verify the existence of a maximally-symmetric (i.e.de Sitter-invariant) Hadamard state $Ω$ for all globally hyperbolic de Sitter backgrounds in all spacetime dimensions $D \ge 4$ by constructing the state's 2-point function in closed form. This 2-pt function is explicitly maximally symmetric. We prove an analogue of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem for linearized gravity. Using these results we prove a cosmic no-hair theorem for linearized gravitons: for any state in the Hilbert space constructed from $…
This paper studies spinor two-point functions for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 fields in maximally symmetric spaces such as de Sitter spacetime, by using intrinsic geometric objects. The Feynman, positive- and negative-frequency Green functions are then obtained for these cases, from which we eventually display the supercommutator and the Peierls bracket under such a setting in two-component-spinor language.
We analyze the renormalization properties of quantum field theories in de Sitter space and show that only two of the maximally invariant vacuum states of free fields lead to consistent perturbation expansions. One is the Euclidean vacuum, and the other can be viewed as an analytic continuation of Euclidean functional integrals on $RP^d$. The corresponding Lorentzian manifold is the future half of global de Sitter space with boundary conditions on fields at the origin of time. We argue that the perturbation series in this case has divergences at the origin, which render the future evolution of …
We put forward a unimodular $N=1, d=4$ anti-de Sitter supergravity theory off shell. This theory, where the Cosmological Constant does not couple to gravity, has a unique maximally supersymmetric classical vacuum which is Anti-de Sitter spacetime with radius given by the equation of motion of the auxiliary scalar field, ie, $S=\frac{3}{κL}$. However, we see that the non-supersymmetric classical vacua of the unimodular theory are Minkowski and de Sitter spacetimes as well as anti-de Sitter spacetime with radius $l\neq L$.
We consider small perturbations to a static three-dimensional de Sitter geometry. For early enough perturbations that satisfy the null energy condition, the result is a shockwave geometry that leads to a time advance in the trajectory of geodesics crossing it. This brings the opposite poles of de Sitter space into causal contact with each other, much like a traversable wormhole in Anti-de Sitter space. In this background, we compute out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) to asses the chaotic nature of the de Sitter horizon and find that it is maximally chaotic: one of the OTOCs we study decays …
We derive the propagator for a massive vector field on a de Sitter background of arbitrary dimension. This propagator is de Sitter invariant and possesses the proper flat spacetime and massless limits. Moreover, the retarded Green's function inferred from it produces the correct classical response to a test source. Our result is expressed in a tensor basis which is convenient for performing quantum field theory computations using dimensional regularization.
Universal horizons in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity and Einstein-æther theory are the equivalent of causal horizons in general relativity and appear to have many of the same properties, including a first law of horizon thermodynamics and thermal radiation. Since universal horizons are infrared solutions of a putative power counting renormalizable quantum gravitational theory, fully understanding their thermodynamics will shed light on the interplay between black hole thermodynamics and quantum gravity. In this paper, we provide a complete classification, including asymptotic charges, of all four dim…
We compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using a superpotential derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation relies on the fact that the Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet vacuum equations are the same when linearized on maximally symmetric backgrounds and uses the recently discovered D-dimensional Kerr-anti-de Sitter solutions to Einstein's equations.
Maximally symmetric curved-brane solutions are studied in dilatonic braneworld models which realise the self-tuning of the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant. It is found that no vacua in which the brane has de Sitter or anti-de Sitter geometry exist, unless one modifies the near-boundary asymptotics of the bulk fields. In the holographic dual picture, this corresponds to coupling the UV CFT to a curved metric (possibly with a defect). Alternatively, the same may be achieved in a flat-space QFT with suitable variable scalar sources. With these ingredients, it is found that maxima…
In this work we prove that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of General Relativity emerge from the geometric structure of statistical mechanics and thermodynamic fluctuation theory. To present our argument, we begin by showing that the pseudo-Riemannian structure of the Thermodynamic Phase Space is a solution to the vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity with a cosmological constant. Then, we use the geometry of equilibrium thermodynamics to demonstrate that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of Einstein's Field Equations -- Minkowski, de-Sitter and Anti-de-Sitter spacetim…
We discuss some implications of recent progress in understanding the black hole information paradox for complementarity in de Sitter space. Extending recent work by two of the authors, we describe a bulk procedure that allows information expelled through the cosmological horizon to be received by an antipodal observer. Generically, this information transfer takes a scrambling time $t = H^{-1}\log(S_{\rm dS})$. We emphasize that this procedure relies crucially on selection of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, interpreted as the thermofield double state that maximally entangles two antipodal static…
We perform a systematic study of the maximum Lyapunov exponent values $λ$ for the motion of classical closed strings in Anti-de Sitter black hole geometries with spherical, planar and hyperbolic horizons. Analytical estimates from the linearized variational equations together with numerical integrations predict the bulk Lyapunov exponent value as $λ\approx 2πTn$, where $n$ is the winding number of the string. The celebrated bound on chaos stating that $λ\leq 2πT$ is thus systematically modified for winding strings in the bulk. Within gauge/string duality, such strings apparently correspond to …
We study vacuum and thermal expectation values of quantum scalar and Dirac fermion fields on anti-de Sitter space-time. Anti-de Sitter space-time is maximally symmetric and this enables expressions for the scalar and fermion vacuum Feynman Green's functions to be derived in closed form. We employ Hadamard renormalization to find the vacuum expectation values. The thermal Feynman Green's functions are constructed from the vacuum Feynman Green's functions using the imaginary time periodicity/anti-periodicity property for scalars/fermions. Focussing on massless fields with either conformal or min…
We argue that stable, maximally symmetric compactifications of string theory to 1+1 dimensions are in conflict with holography. In particular, the finite horizon entropies of the Rindler wedge in 1+1 dimensional Minkowski and anti de Sitter space, and of the de Sitter horizon in any dimension, are inconsistent with the symmetries of these spaces. The argument parallels one made recently by the same authors, in which we demonstrated the incompatibility of the finiteness of the entropy and the symmetries of de Sitter space in any dimension. If the horizon entropy is either infinite or zero the c…
The insertion of the spectral flow operator in a string scattering amplitude on AdS$_3\times \mathcal{N}$ produces a change in the winding number of one of the incoming (or outgoing) states, making it possible to compute amplitudes of processes in which winding number in AdS$_3$ is not conserved. The insertion of such operator, however, might seem artificial from the worldsheet theory perspective, as it appears as an unintegrated vertex operator of conformal dimension zero that does not represent any normalizable state. Here, we show that the spectral flow operator naturally emerges in the Lio…
By considering Hadamard vacuum states, we first construct the two-point functions associated with Stueckelberg massive electromagnetism in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Then, from the general formalism developed in [A. Belokogne and A. Folacci, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{93}, 044063 (2016)], we obtain an exact analytical expression for the vacuum expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the massive vector field propagating in these maximally symmetric spacetimes.
We present new anti-de Sitter black hole solutions of gauged N=8, SO(8) supergravity, which is the massless sector of the AdS_4\times S^7 vacuum of M-theory. By focusing on the U(1)^4 Cartan subgroup, we find non-extremal 1, 2, 3 and 4 charge solutions. In the extremal limit, they may preserve up to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/8 of the supersymmetry, respectively. In the limit of vanishing SO(8) coupling constant, the solutions reduce to the familiar black holes of the M_4\times T^7 vacuum, but have very different interpretation since there are no winding states on S^7 and no U-duality. In contrast to…
We consider graviton scattering in maximal supergravity on Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) in $d+1$ dimensions for $d=3,4,\text{and $6$}$ with no extra compact spacetime factor. Holography suggests that this theory is dual to an exotic maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT) in $d$ dimensions whose only light single trace operator is the stress tensor. This contrasts with more standard cases like Type IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$ dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills, where the CFT has light single trace operators for each Kaluza-Klein mode on $S^5$. We compute the 1-loop…
Here, we study a quantum fermion field in rigid rotation at finite temperature on anti-de Sitter space. We assume that the rotation rate $Ω$ is smaller than the inverse radius of curvature $\ell ^{-1}$, so that there is no speed of light surface and the static (maximally-symmetric) and rotating vacua coincide. This assumption enables us to follow a geometric approach employing a closed-form expression for the vacuum two-point function, which can then be used to compute thermal expectation values (t.e.v.s). In the high temperature regime, we find a perfect analogy with known results on Minkowsk…
The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duali…
This PhD thesis mainly deals with deformations of locally anti-de Sitter black holes, focusing in particular on BTZ black holes. We first study the generic rotating and (extended) non-rotating BTZ black holes within a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces framework, emphasize on the role played by solvable subgroups of SL(2,R) in the black hole structure and derive their global geometry in a group-theoretical way. We analyse how these observations are transposed in the case of higher-dimensional locally AdS black holes. We then show that there exists, in SL(2,R), a family of twisted conjugacy cla…
We study the dynamics of a black hole in an asymptotically $AdS_d \times S^d$ space-time in the limit of a large number of dimensions, $d \to \infty$. Such a black hole is known to become dynamically unstable below a critical radius. We derive the dispersion relation for the quasinormal mode that governs this instability in an expansion in $1/d$. We also provide a full nonlinear analysis of the instability at leading order in $1/d$. We find solutions that resemble the lumpy black spots and black belts previously constructed numerically for small $d$, breaking the $SO(d+1)$ rotational symmetry …
We classify solutions of 10d type IIA/B supergravities with orientifolds, on a 4d maximally symmetric spacetime times a 6d group manifold. We then look for new solutions in previously unexplored solution classes, and find some: (anti-) de Sitter solutions with intersecting O4, O6 and D6, or Minkowski solutions with 3 intersecting O5, among others. We provide the numerical code that we developed for this purpose. We also prove new no-go theorems against (anti-) de Sitter solutions. We finally conjecture the absence of de Sitter solution for 2 or less intersecting source sets, implying that a 4d…

We consider black holes in anti-de Sitter space AdS_{p+2} (p = 2,3,5), which have hyperbolic, flat or spherical event horizons. The $O(α'^3)$ corrections (or the leading corrections in powers of the eleven-dimensional Planck length) to the black hole metrics are computed for the various topologies and dimensions. We investigate the consequences of the stringy or M-theory corrections for the black hole thermodynamics. In particular, we show the emergence of a stable branch of small spherical black holes. We obtain the corrected Hawking-Page transition temperature for black holes with spherical …
In the light of the duality between physics in the bulk of anti-de Sitter space and a conformal field theory on the boundary, we review the M2, D3 and M5 branes and how their near-horizon geometry yields the compactification of D=11 supergravity on S^{7}, Type IIB supergravity on S^{5} and D=11 supergravity on S^{4}, respectively. We discuss the ``Membrane at the End of the Universe'' idea and its relation to the corresponding superconformal singleton theories that live on the boundary of the AdS_{4}, AdS_{5} and AdS_{7} vacua. The massless sectors of these compactifications are described by t…
We review O$(d,d)$ Covariant String Cosmology to all orders in $α'$ in the presence of matter and study its solutions. We show that the perturbative analysis for a constant dilaton in the absence of a dilatonic charge does not lead to a time-independet equation of state. Meanwhile, the non-perturbative equations of motion allow de Sitter solutions in the String frame parametrized by the equation of state and the dilatonic charge. Among this set of solutions, we show that a cosmological constant equation of state implies a de Sitter solution both in String and Einstein frames while a winding eq…
In this note we prove that the volume of a causal diamond associated with an inertial observer in asymptotically de Sitter 4-dimensional space-time is monotonically increasing function of cosmological time. The asymptotic value of the volume is that of in maximally symmetric de Sitter space-time. The monotonic property of the volume is checked in two cases: in vacuum and in the presence of a massless scalar field. In vacuum, the volume flow (with respect to cosmological time) asymptotically vanishes if and only if future space-like infinity is 3-manifold of constant curvature. The volume flow …
We study quantum discord between two free modes of a massive scalar field in a maximally entangled state in de Sitter space. We introduce two observers, one in a global chart and the other in an open chart of de Sitter space, and the observers determine the quantum discord created by each detecting one of the modes. This situation is analogous to the relationship between an observer in a Minkowski chart and another in one of the two Rindler charts in flat space. We find that the state becomes less entangled as the curvature of the open chart gets larger. In particular, for the cases of a massl…
Some general remarks are made about the quantum theory of scalar fields and the definition of momentum in curved space. Special emphasis is given to field theory in anti-de Sitter space, as it represents a maximally symmetric space-time of constant curvature which could arise in the local description of matter interactions in small regions of space-time. Transform space rules for evaluating Feynman diagrams in Euclidean anti-de Sitter space are initially defined using eigenfunctions based on generalized plane waves. It is shown that, for a general curved space, the rules associated with the ve…
We define the local acceleration and jerk of a relativistic brane in an ambient spacetime, and construct from them a dimensionless parameter lambda that must be small for an interpretation of brane acceleration as local Unruh temperature. As examples, we discuss (i) open rotating branes, for which lambda>1 (ii) closed spherical branes expanding in Minkowski spacetime, for which lambda=0 when the worldvolume is either an Einstein static universe or de Sitter space, in which case the brane temperature equals the Gibbons-Hawking temperature, (iii) closed spherical branes in anti-de Sitter spaceti…
Starting from the classical action for a spin-zero particle in a D-dimensional anti-Sitter (AdS) spacetime, we recover the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound by quantization. For D=4,5,7, and using an Sl(2;K) spinor notation for K=R,C,H, we find a bi-twistor form of the action for which the AdS isometry group is linearly realised, although only for zero mass when D=4,7, in agreement with previous constructions. For zero mass and D=4, the conformal isometry group is linearly realized. We extend these results to the superparticle in the maximally supersymmetric "AdS x S" string/M-theory vacua, showing…
We construct a state in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime which is invariant under the action of its group of symmetries. Our state is not defined in the whole Kruskal extension of this spacetime, but rather in a subset of the maximally extended conformal diagram. The construction is based on a careful use of the bulk-to-boundary technique. We will show that our state is Hadamard and that it is not a KMS state, differently from the case of states constructed in spacetimes containing only one event horizon.
We present the maximally supersymmetric three-dimensional gauged supergravities. Owing to the special properties of three dimensions -- especially the on-shell duality between vector and scalar fields, and the purely topological character of (super)gravity -- they exhibit an even richer structure than the gauged supergravities in higher dimensions. The allowed gauge groups are subgroups of the global E_8 symmetry of ungauged N=16 supergravity. They include the regular series SO(p,8-p) x SO(p,8-p) for all p=0,1,...,4, the group E_8 itself, as well as various noncompact forms of the exceptional …

We introduce a general class of four-dimensional effective field theories which include curved space Galileons and DBI theories possessing nonlinear shift-like symmetries. These effective theories arise from purely gravitational actions for 3-branes probing higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of a Minkowski brane embedded in a higher dimensional Minkowski background, the resulting four-dimensional effective field theory is the Galileon one, with its associated Galilean symmetry and second order equations. However, much more general structures are possible. We construct the general …
In this work we investigate the moduli stabilisation problem and the requirements for de Sitter vacua within the framework of type IIB string theory. Using perturbative effects arising from the various sources such as $α^\prime$ corrections, logarithmic as well as KK and winding-type string-loop corrections along with the higher derivative $F^4$-contributions, we present a moduli stabilisation scheme in which the overall volume is realised at exponentially large values such that $\langle {\cal V} \rangle \simeq e^{a/g_s^2}$ in the weak coupling regime, where $a$ is a parameter given as $a = \f…
