We review O$(d,d)$ Covariant String Cosmology to all orders in $α'$ in the presence of matter and study its solutions. We show that the perturbative analysis for a constant dilaton in the absence of a dilatonic charge does not lead to a time-independet equation of state. Meanwhile, the non-perturbative equations of motion allow de Sitter solutions in the String frame parametrized by the equation of state and the dilatonic charge. Among this set of solutions, we show that a cosmological constant equation of state implies a de Sitter solution both in String and Einstein frames while a winding equation of state implies a de Sitter solution in the former and a static phase in the latter. We also consider the stability of these solutions under homogeneous linear perturbations and show that they are not unstable, therefore defining viable cosmological scenarios.
We study cosmological solutions in the dilatonic brane world models. The effective four-dimensional equations on the brane are analyzed for the models with one positive tension brane and two branes with tensions of opposite signs. Just as in the non-dilatonic brane case, the conventional Friedmann equations of the four-dimensional universe are reproduced to the leading order in matter energy density for the model with one brane and the introduction of a radion potential is required in order to reproduce the Friedmann equations with the correct sign for the model with two branes.
Quantum cosmology may permit to determine the initial conditions of the Universe. In particular, it may select a specific model between many possible classical models. In this work, we study a quantum cosmological model based on the string effective action coupled to matter. The Schutz's formalism is employed in the description of the fluid. A radiation fluid is considered. In this way, a time coordinate may be identified and the Wheeler-DeWitt equation reduces in the minisuperspace to a Schrödinger-like equation. It is shown that, under some quite natural assumptions, the expectation values i…
In this article we discuss some aspects of double field theory cosmology with an emphasis on the role played by the dilaton. The cosmological solutions of double field theory equations of motion after coupling a shifted dilaton to them are investigated. The equations of motion for a constant shifted dilaton and a constant usaul dilaton in an FRW universe are obtained. The solutions of these equations are obtained in both the supergravity frame and in the winding frame. We also consider three possible dark energy candidates in a 4D universe using double field theory cosmology and find some basi…
We present a model of dark energy based on the string effective action, and on the assumption that the dilaton is strongly coupled to dark matter. We discuss the main differences between this class of models and more conventional models of quintessence, uncoupled to dark matter. This paper is based on talks presented at the "VII Congresso Nazionale di Cosmologia" (Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma, Monte Porzio Catone, November 2002), and at the Meeting "Dark Energy Day" (University of Milano-Bicocca, November 2002). To appear in the Proc. of the International Conference on ``Thinking, Observing…
We demonstrate linear stability of the dilatonic Black Holes appearing in a string-inspired higher-derivative gravity theory with a Gauss- Bonnet curvature-squared term. The proof is accomplished by mapping the system to a one-dimensional Schrodinger problem which admits no bound states. This result is important in that it constitutes a linearly stable example of a black hole that bypasses the `no-hair conjecture'. However, the dilaton hair is `secondary'in the sense that it is not accompanied by any new quantum number for the black hole solution.
We consider N=1 two-dimensional (2d) dilatonic supergravity (SG), 2d dilatonic SG obtained by dimensional reduction from N=1 four-dimensional (4d) SG, N=2 2d dilatonic SG and string-inspired 4d dilatonic SG. For all the theories, the corresponding action on a bosonic background is constructed and the interaction with $N$ (dilatonic) Wess-Zumino (WZ) multiplets is presented. Working in the large-N approximation, it is enough to consider the trace anomaly induced effective action due to dilaton-coupled conformal matter as a quantum correction (for 2d models s-waves approximation is additionally …
Gravitation and the standard model of particle physics are incorporated within a single conformal scalar-tensor theory, where the scalar field is complex. The Higgs field has a dynamical expectation value, as has the Planck mass, but the relative strengths of the fundamental interactions are unchanged. Initial cosmic singularity and the horizon problem are avoided, and spatial flatness is natural. There were no primordial phase transitions; consequently, no topological defects were produced. Quantum excitations of the dilaton phase induced a slightly red-tilted spectrum of gaussian and adiabat…
In this talk, we recall the most important features of the Dilatonic Black Holes which arise in the framework of the Einstein-Dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet theory and which are dressed with a classical long range dilaton field in contradiction with the existing "no-hair" theorems of the Theory of General Relativity. We demonstrate linear stability of these black hole solutions under small spacetime-dependent perturbations by making use of a semi-analytic method based on the Fubini-Sturm's theorem. As a result, the Dilatonic Black Holes constitute one of the very few examples of stable black hole soluti…
5d dilatonic gravity (bosonic sector of gauged supergravity) with non-trivial bulk potential and with surface terms (boundary cosmological constant and trace anomaly induced effective action for brane quantum matter) is considered. For constant bulk potential and maximally SUSY Yang-Mills theory (CFT living on the brane) the inflationary brane-world is constructed. The bulk is singular asymptotically AdS space with non-constant dilaton and dilatonic de Sitter or hyperbolic brane is induced by quantum matter effects. At the same time, dilaton on the brane is determined dynamically. This all is …
We present the scalar-tensor gravitational theory with an exponential potential in which pauli metric is regarded as the physical space-time metric. We show that it is essentially equivalent to coupled quintessence(CQ) model. However for baryotropic fluid being radiation there are in fact no coupling between dilatonic scalar field and radiation. We present the critical points for baryotropic fluid and investigate the properties of critical points when the baryotropic matter is specified to ordinary matter. It is possible for all the critical points to be attractors as long as the parameters $λ…
We construct an n+q+2 dimensional background that has dilatonic q-brane singularities and that is charged under an antisymmetric tensor field, the background spacetime being maximally symmetric in n-dimensions with constant curvature k=0,+1,-1. For k=1 the bulk solutions correspond to black q-branes. For k=0,-1 the geometry resembles the `white hole' region of the Reissner-N"ordstrom solution with a past Cauchy horizon. The metric between the (timelike) singularity and the horizon is static whereas beyond the horizon it is cosmological. In the particular case of q=0, we study the motion of a c…
Stability of dilatonic AdS spaces due to quantum effects of dilaton coupled conformal matter is considered. When such spaces do not exist on classical level, their dynamical generation occurs. Explicit examples corresponding to quantum creation of d4 dilatonic AdS Universe and of d2 dilatonic AdS Black Hole (BH) are presented. Motivated by holographic RG, in the similar approach the complete d5 effective action is discussed. The intermediate region where it is the sum of two parts: bulk (classical gravity) and boundary quantum action is investigated. The effective equations solution representi…
We present a class of simple scalar-tensor models of gravity with one scalar field (dilaton $Φ$) and only one unknown function (cosmological potential $U(Φ)$). These models might be considered as a stringy inspired ones with broken SUSY. They have the following basic properties: 1) Positive dilaton mass, $m_Φ$, and positive cosmological constant $Λ$, define two extremely different scales. The models under consideration are consistent with the known experimental facts if $m_Φ> 10^{-3} eV$ and $Λ=Λ^{obs}\sim 10^{-56} cm^{-2}$. 2) Einstein week equivalence principle is strictly satisfied and exte…
We explicitly show that the net number of degrees of freedom in the two-dimensional dilaton gravity is zero through the Hamiltonian constraint analysis. This implies that the local space-time dependent physical excitations do not exist. From the linear perturbation around the black hole background, we explicitly prove that the exponentially growing mode with time is in fact eliminated outside the horizon. Therefore, the two-dimensional dilation gravity is essentially stable.
Gravitation is described in the context of a dilatonic theory that is conformally related to general relativity. All dimensionless ratios of fundamental dimensional quantities, e.g. particle masses and the Planck mass, as well as the relative strengths of the fundamental interactions, are fixed constants. An interplay between the positive energy density associated with relativistic matter (and possibly with negative spatial curvature) and the negative energy associated with dynamical dilaton phase results in a non-singular, flat cosmological model with no horizon, and -- as a direct consequenc…
A nontopological soliton solution of dilaton-Maxwell theory describes a domain wall-like solution which confines magnetic flux in its core [G.W. Gibbons and C.G. Wells, Class. Quant. Grav. 11, 2499 (1994)]. Since the solution is not stabilized by a nontrivial topology of the vacuum manifold, it is interesting to see if the static solution is stable against small fluctuations. We consider the stability of the solution in response to small fluctuations in the scalar and magnetic fields. It is determined that the ansatz solution does indeed exhibit stability.
We construct a model for dilatonic brane worlds with constant curvature on the brane, i.e. a non-zero four-dimensional cosmological constant, given in function of the dilaton coupling and the cosmological constant of the bulk. We compare this family of solutions to other known dilatonic domain wall solutions and apply a self-tunning mechanism to check the stability of our solutions under quantum fluctuations living on the brane.
We demonstrate that the stability of the semilocal vortex can be significantly improved by the presence of a dilatonic coupling of the form e^\frac{q | Φ|^2}{η^2} F_{μν}F^{μν} with q>0 where ηis the scale of symmetry breaking that gives rise to the vortex. For q=0 we obtain the usual embedded (semilocal) Nielsen-Olesen vortex. We find the stability region of the parameter β= (\frac{m_Φ}{m_A})^2 (m_Φand m_A are the masses of the scalar and gauge fields respectively). We show that the stability region of βis 0<β<β_{max}(q) where β_{max}(q=0)=1 (as expected) and β_{max}(q) is an increasing functi…
String cosmology aims at providing a reliable description of the very early Universe in the regime where standard-model physics is no longer appropriate, and where we can safely apply the basic ingredients of superstring models such as dilatonic and axionic forces, duality symmetries, winding modes, limiting sizes and curvatures, higher-dimensional interactions among elementary extended object. The sought target is that of resolving (or at least alleviating) the big problems of standard and inflationary cosmology like the spacetime singularity, the physics of the trans-Planckian regime, the in…
Recently quintessence is proposed to explain the observation data of supernova indicating a time-varying cosmological constant and accelerating universe. Inspired by this and its mysterious origin, we look for the possibility of quintessence as the holographic dark matters dominated in the late time in the brane world scenarios. We consider both the cases of static and moving brane in a dilaton gravity background. For the static brane we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method motivated by holographic renormalization group to study the intrinsic FRW cosmology on the brane and find out the constraint on…
We explore the stability of domain wall and bubble solutions in theories with compact extra dimensions. The energy density stored inside of the wall can destabilize the volume modulus of a compactification, leading to solutions containing either a timelike singularity or a region where space decompactifies, depending on the metric ansatz. We determine the structure of such solutions both analytically and using numerical simulations, and analyze how they arise in compactifications of Einstein--Maxwell theory and Type IIB string theory. The existence of instabilities has important implications f…
We study the role of rolling tachyons in the cosmological model with dilatonic gravity. In the string frame, flat space solutions of both initial-stage and late-time are obtained in closed form. In the Einstein frame, we show that every expanding solution is decelerating.
We explore a dark energy model with a ghost scalar field in the context of the runaway dilaton scenario in low-energy effective string theory. We address the problem of vacuum stability by implementing higher-order derivative terms and show that a cosmologically viable model of ``phantomized'' dark energy can be constructed without violating the stability of quantum fluctuations. We also analytically derive the condition under which cosmological scaling solutions exist starting from a general Lagrangian including the phantom type scalar field. We apply this method to the case where the dilaton…
In the dilatonic domain wall model, we study the Schwarzschild black hole as a solution to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) zero mode effective action which is equivalent to the Brans-Dicke (BD) model with a potential. This can describe the large Randall-Sundrum (RS) black hole whose horizon is to be the intersection of the black cigar with the brane. The black cigar located far from the AdS$_5$-horizon is known to be stable, but any explicit calculation for stability of the RS black hole at $z=0$ is not yet performed. Here its stability is investigated against the $z$-independent perturbations composed …
We consider the coupled evolution of density, (scalar) metric and dilaton perturbations in the transition from a ``stringy" phase of growing curvature and gravitational coupling to the standard radiation-dominated cosmology. We show that dilaton production, with a spectrum tilted towards large frequencies, emerges as a general property of this scenario. We discuss the frame-independence of the dilaton spectrum and of the inflationary properties of the metric background by using, as model of source, a pressureless gas of weakly interacting strings, which is shown to provide an approximate but c…
We study the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions ($D$). We consider the canonical ensemble and so the charge inside the cavity and the temperature at the wall are fixed. We analyze the stability of the black brane equilibrium states and derive the phase structures. For the zero charge case we find an analog of Hawking-Page phase transition for these black branes in arbitrary dimensions. When the charge is non-zero, we find that below a critical value of the charge, the phase diagram has a …
We present a review of cosmological solutions in non-linear massive gravity, focusing on the stability of perturbations. Although homogeneous and isotropic solutions have been found, these are now known to suffer from either Higuchi ghost or a new non-linear ghost instability. We discuss two approaches to alleviate this issue. By relaxing the symmetry of the background by e.g. breaking isotropy in the hidden sector, it is possible to accommodate a stable cosmological solution. Alternatively, extending the theory to allow for new dynamical degrees of freedom can also remove the conditions which…
We consider dynamics of a flat anisotropic multidimensional cosmological model in Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. In particular, we find conditions under which the known power-law vacuum solution can be an attractor for the case with non-zero magnetic field. We also describe a particular class of numerical solution in $(5+1)$-dimensional case which does not approach the power-law regime.
We study the dynamics of a cosmological model with a perfect fluid and $\mathcal{N}$ fields on a hyperbolic field space interacting via a symmetric potential. We list all late-time solutions, investigate their stability and briefly discuss predictions of the theory. Moreover, for the case of two scalar fields and an exponential potential we prove that the field equations are Liouville integrable and we provide for the first time the general solution for a region of the parameter space.
The stability analysis of an anisotropic inflationary universe of the four dimensional Neveu-Schwarz--Neveu-Schwarz string model with a nonvanishing cosmological constant is discussed in this paper. The accelerating expansion solution found earlier is shown to be stable against the perturbations with respect to the dilaton and axion fields once the dilaton field falls close to the local minimum of the symmetry-breaking potential. This indicates that the Bianchi I space tends to evolve to an isotropic flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space. This expanding solution is also shown to be stable agai…
We develop the general reconstruction scheme in two scalar model. The quintom-like theory which may describe (different) non-singular Little Rip or de Sitter cosmology is reconstructed. (In)stability of such dark energy cosmologies as well as the flow to fixed points is studied. The stability of Little Rip universe which leads to dissolution of bound objects sometime in future indicates that no classical transition to de Sitter space occurs.
It has been shown that anisotropy of homogeneous spacetime described by the general Kasner metric can be damped by quantum fluctuations coming from perturbative quantum gravity in one-loop approximation. Also, a formal argument, not limited to one-loop approximation, is put forward in favor of stability of isotropy in the exactly isotropic case.
In this paper, we describe the first steps towards fully non-perturbative cosmology. We explain why the conventional methods used by cosmologists based on the ADM formulation are generally inadequate for this purpose and why it is advantageous instead to adapt the harmonic formulation pioneered and utilized in mathematical and numerical relativity. Here we focus on using this approach to evaluating the linear mode stability in homogeneous and nearly homogeneous backgrounds and devising a valid scheme and diagnostics for numerical computation. We also briefly touch on the relevance of these met…
An extremely fast exponential expansion of the Universe is typical for the stable version of the inflationary model, based on the anomaly-induced action of gravity. The total amount of exponential $e$-folds could be very large, before the transition to the unstable version and the beginning of the Starobinsky inflation. Thus, the stable exponential expansion can be seen as a pre-inflationary semiclassical cosmological solution. We explore whether this stable phase could follow after the bounce, subsequent to the contraction of the Universe. Extending the previous consideration of the bounce, w…
The bigravity models coupled with two scalar fields are constructed. We show that a wide class of the expansion history of the universe, especially corresponding to dark energy and/or inflation, can be described by a solution of the bigravity model. We discuss the stability of the solution and give the conditions for the stability. We also explicitly construct a model which gives a stable solution. By using the stable model, for an arbitrary evolution of the universe expansion, we construct the Brans-Dicke like model which reproduces the evolution.
One possibility to explain the current accelerated expansion of the universe may be related with the presence of cosmologically evolving scalar whose mass depends on the local matter density (chameleon cosmology). We point out that matter quantum effects in such scalar-tensor theory produce the chameleon scalar field dependent conformal anomaly. Such conformal anomaly adds higher derivative terms to chameleon field equation of motion. As a result, the principal possibility for instabilities appears. These instabilities seem to be irrelevant at small curvature but may become dangerous in the re…
Gravitational stability of torsion and inflaton potential in a four-dimensional spacetime de Sitter solution in scalar-tensor cosmology where Cartan torsion propagates is investigated in detail. Inflaton and torsion evolution equations are derived by making use of a Lagrangean method. Stable and unstable modes for torsion and inflatons are found. Present astrophysical observations favour a stable mode for torsion since this would explain why no relic torsion imprint has been found on the Cosmic Background Radiation in the universe.
In this paper, we study $F(R)$ gravity by Hu-Sawicki model in Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. The Friedmann equations are calculated by modified gravity action, and then the obtained Friedmann equations are written in terms of standard Friedmann equations. Next behavior of bouncing cosmology is investigated in the modified gravity model, i.e., this behavior can solve problem of non-singular in standard Big Bang cosmology. We plot the cosmological parameters in terms of cosmic time and then bouncing condition is investigated. In what follows, we reconstruct the modified…
In isotropic loop quantum cosmology, non-perturbatively modified dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field violates weak, strong and dominant energy conditions when they are stated in terms of equation of state parameter. The violation of strong energy condition helps to have non-singular evolution by evading singularity theorems thus leading to a generic inflationary phase. However, the violation of weak and dominant energy conditions raises concern, as in general relativity these conditions ensure causality of the system and stability of vacuum via Hawking-Ellis conservation theorem. It i…
The stability of the Bianchi type I anisotropic brane cosmology is analyzed in this paper. We also study the effect of the brane solution by comparing the models on the 3-brane and the models in the conventional Einstein's space. Analysis is presented for two different models: one with a perfect fluid and the other one with a dilaton field. It is shown that the anisotropic expansion is smeared out dynamically for both theories in the large time limit independent of the models with different types of matter. The initial states are, however, dramatically different. A primordial anisotropic expan…
Loop Quantum Cosmology strongly modifies the high-energy dynamics of Friedman-Robertson-Walker models and removes the big-bang singularity. We investigate how LQC corrections affect the stability properties of the Einstein static universe. In General Relativity, the Einstein static model with positive cosmological constant Lambda is unstable to homogeneous perturbations. We show that LQC modifications can lead to a centre of stability for a large enough positive value of Lambda.
A stability analysis is made in the context of the previously discovered non-singular cosmological solution from 1-loop corrected superstring effective action. We found that this solution has an instability in graviton mode, which is shown to have a close relation to the avoidance of initial singularity via energy condition. We also estimate the condition for the breakdown of the background solution due to the overdominance of the graviton.
In this paper, we investigate thermal equilibrium in string gas cosmology which is dominated by closed string. We consider two interesting regimes, Hagedorn and radiation regimes. We find that for short strings in small radius of Hagedorn regime very large amount of energy requested to have thermal equilibrium but for long strings in such system a few energy is sufficient to have thermal equilibrium. On the other hand in the large radius of Hagedorn regime, which pressure is not negligible, we obtain a relation between the energy and pressure in terms of cosmic time which is satisfied by thermal…
A class of generalized Galileon cosmological models, which can be described by a point-like Lagrangian, is considered in order to utilize Noether's Theorem to determine conservation laws for the field equations. In the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe, the existence of a nontrivial conservation law indicates the integrability of the field equations. Due to the complexity of the latter, we apply the differential invariants approach in order to construct special power-law solutions and study their stability.
Using the dynamical system theory we show that the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with bulk viscous fluid in the presence of cosmological constant is equivalent to a degenerate two dimensional Bogdanov-Takens normal form. The equation of state parameter, $ω$, the bulk viscosity coefficient, $ξ$, and the cosmological constant, $Λ$, define the necessary parameters for unfolding the degenerate Bogdanov-Takens system. The fixed points of the system are discussed together with the variation of their stability properties upon changing the relevant parameters $ω$, $Λ$ and $ξ$. Th…
We study the dynamics of the size of an extra-dimensional manifold stabilised by fluxes. Inspecting the potential for the 4D field associated with this size (the radion), we obtain the conditions under which it can be stabilised and show that stable compactifications on hyperbolic manifolds necessarily have a negative four-dimensional cosmological constant, in contradiction with experimental observations. Assuming compactification on a positively curved (spherical) manifold we find that the radion has a mass of the order of the compactification scale, M_c, and Planck suppressed couplings. We a…
A survey of solutions to the cosmological moduli problem in string theory. The only extant proposal which may work is Intermediate Scale Inflation as proposed by Randall and Thomas. Supersymmetry preserving dynamics which could give large masses to the moduli is strongly constrained by cosmology and requires the existence of string vacuum states possessing properties different from those of any known vacuuum. Such a mechanism cannot give mass to the dilaton unless there are cancellations between different exponentially small contributions to the superpotential. Our investigation also shows tha…
We consider the dynamics of a cosmological substratum of pressureless matter and holographic dark energy with a cutoff length proportional to the Ricci scale. Stability requirements for the matter perturbations are shown to single out a model with a fixed relation between the present matter fraction $Ω_{m0}$ and the present value $ω_{0}$ of the equation-of-state parameter of the dark energy. This model has the same number of free parameters as the $Λ$CDM model but it has no $Λ$CDM limit. We discuss the consistency between background observations and the mentioned stability-guaranteeing paramet…
Five-dimensional cosmological models with two 3-branes and with a buck cosmological constant are studied. It is found that for all the three cases ($Λ=0$, $Λ>0$, and $Λ<0$), the conventional space-time singularity ``big bang'' could be replaced by a matter singularity ``big bounce'', at which the ``size'' of the universe and the energy density are finite while the pressure diverges, and across which the universe evolves from a pre-existing contracting phase to the present expanding phase. It is also found that for the $Λ>0$ case the brane solutions could give an oscillating universe model in w…
The observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe demonstrates that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete---if not incorrect---and that new physics is out there, waiting to be discovered. The most fundamental task for the next generation of astrophysical facilities is therefore to search for, identify and ultimately characterize this new physics. Here we highlight recent efforts along these lines, mostly focusing on ongoing work by CAUP's Dark Side Team aiming to develop some of the science case and optimize observational strategies for forthc…
In this note cosmological models coming out of the String Field Theory (SFT) in application to the Dark Energy are reviewed. A way of constructing solutions in the case of linear models is outlined, cosmological perturbations and observational evidences of such models are explored. We explicitly demonstrate the stability of the system at the linear order in the most typical configuration.
In this paper, we propose extended Chaplygin gas equation of state for which it recovers barotropic fluid with quadratic equation of state. We use numerical method to investigate the behavior of some cosmological parameters such as scale factor, Hubble expansion parameter, energy density and deceleration parameter. We also discuss about the resulting effective equation of state parameter. Using density perturbations we investigate the stability of the theory.
Ooguri, Vafa, and Verlinde have recently proposed an approach to string cosmology which is based on the idea that cosmological string moduli should be selected by a Hartle-Hawking wave function. They are led to consider a certain Euclidean space which has *two different Lorentzian interpretations*, one of which is a model of an *accelerating cosmology*. We describe in detail how to implement this idea without resorting to a "complex metric". We show that the four-dimensional version of the OVV cosmology is null geodesically incomplete but has no curvature singularity; also that it is [barely] …
Motivated by string gas cosmology, we investigate the stability of moduli fields coming from compactifications of string gas on torus with background flux. It was previously claimed that moduli are stabilized only at a single fixed point in moduli space, a self-dual point of T-duality with vanishing flux. Here, we show that there exist other stable fixed points on moduli space with non-vanishing flux. We also discuss the more general target space dualities associated with these fixed points.
Seiberg and Witten have shown that the non-perturbative stability of string physics on conformally compactified spacetimes is related to the behaviour of the areas and volumes of certain branes as the brane is moved towards infinity. If, as is particularly natural in quantum cosmology, the spatial sections of an accelerating cosmological model are flat and compact, then the spacetime is on the brink of disaster: it turns out that the version of inflationary spacetime geometry with toral spatial sections is marginally stable in the Seiberg-Witten sense. The question is whether the system remain…
The CGF cosmology is a complete theory of cosmology from the electroweak transition onward. It is semi-classical. At leading order the only matter is dark matter -- a cosmological SU(2)-weak gauge field (the CGF). Ordinary matter is a subleading correction from fluctuations around the classical state. The CGF is periodic in imaginary time. It acts as thermal bath for the fluctuations of the Standard Model fields. Here, the initial thermal state of the SU(2) gauge field fluctuations is constructed and shown to be thermodynamically stable. This is a warm-up for (1) constructing the initial therm…
We study the stability of extra dimensions in string gas cosmology at late times. Vacuum energy and, interestingly, baryons lead to decompactification after they become dynamically important. The string gas can stabilise the effect of baryons, but not that of vacuum energy. However, we find that the interplay of baryons and strings can lead to acceleration in the visible dimensions, without the need for vacuum energy.
