Let $X,X_1,X_2,\ldots$ be i.i.d. ${\mathbb{R}}^d$-valued real random vectors. Assume that ${\mathbf{E}X=0}$, $\operatorname {cov}X=\mathbb{C}$, $\mathbf{E}\Vert X\Vert^2=σ^2$ and that $X$ is not concentrated in a proper subspace of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Let $G$ be a mean zero Gaussian random vector with the same covariance operator as that of $X$. We study the distributions of nondegenerate quadratic forms $\mathbb{Q}[S_N]$ of the normalized sums ${S_N=N^{-1/2}(X_1+\cdots+X_N)}$ and show that, without any additional conditions, \[Δ_N\stackrel{\mathrm{def}}{=}\sup_x\bigl |\mathbf{P}\bigl\{\mathbb{Q}[S_N]\leq x\bigr\}-\mathbf{P}\bigl\{\mathbb{Q}[G]\leq x\bigr\}\bigr|={\mathcal{O}}\bigl(N^{-1}\bigr),\] provided that $d\geq5$ and the fourth moment of $X$ exists. Furthermore, we provide explicit bounds of order ${\mathcal{O}}(N^{-1})$ for $Δ_N$ for the rate of approximation by short asymptotic expansions and for the concentration functions of the random variables $\mathbb{Q}[S_N+a]$, $a\in{\mathbb{R}}^d$. The order of the bound is optimal. It extends previous results of Bentkus and Götze [Probab. Theory Related Fields 109 (1997a) 367-416] (for ${d\ge9}$) to the case $d\ge5$, which is the smallest possible dimension for such a bound. Moreover, we show that, in the finite dimensional case and for isometric $\mathbb{Q}$, the implied constant in ${\mathcal{O}}(N^{-1})$ has the form $c_dσ^d(\det\mathbb{C})^{-1/2}\mathbf {E}\|\mathbb{C}^{-1/2}X\|^4$ with some $c_d$ depending on $d$ only. This answers a long standing question about optimal rates in the central limit theorem for quadratic forms starting with a seminal paper by Esséen [Acta Math. 77 (1945) 1-125].
We give a two-dimensional central limit theorem (CLT) for the second-order quadratic variation of the centered Gaussian processes on $[0,T]$. Though the approach we use is well known in the literature, the conditions under which the CLT holds are usually based on differentiability of the corresponding covariance function. In our case, we replace differentiability conditions by the convergence of the scaled sums of the second-order moments. To illustrate the usefulness and easiness of use of the approach, we apply the obtained CLT to proving the asymptotic normality of the estimator of the Orey…
Let $B$ be a bifractional Brownian motion with parameters $H\in (0, 1)$ and $K\in(0,1]$. For any $n\geq1$, set $Z_n =\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}\big[n^{2HK}(B_{(i+1)/n}-B_{i/n})^2-\E((B_{i+1}-B_{i})^2)\big]$. We use the Malliavin calculus and the so-called Stein's method on Wiener chaos introduced by Nourdin and Peccati \cite{NP09} to derive, in the case when $0<HK\leq3/4$, Berry-Esséen-type bounds for the Kolmogorov distance between the law of the correct renormalization $V_n$ of $Z_n$ and the standard normal law. Finally, we study almost sure central limit theorems for the sequence $V_n$.
We formulate and prove a new sufficient conditions for Central Limit Theorem(CLT) in the space of continuous functions in the terms typical for the approximation theory. We prove that the conditions for continuous CLT obtained by N.C.Jain and M.B.Marcus are under some natural additional conditions necessary. We provide also some examples in order to show the exactness of obtained results and illustrate briefly the applications in the Monte-Carlo method.
We provide estimates of the rate of strong approximation and bounds for probabilities of moderate deviations in the CLT for the $L_1$-norm of the kernel density estimator without any assumptions on the density and assuming that the kernel is bounded and has bounded support.
We investigate the multivariate central limit theorem for nonlinear statistics by means of Stein's method and Slepian's smart path interpolation method. Based on certain difference operators in theory of concentration inequalities, we obtain two explicit bounds for the rate of convergence. Applications to Rademacher functionals, the runs and quadratic forms are provided as well.
In this paper, we consider the explicit bound for the second-order approximation of the quadratic variation of a general fractional Gaussian process $(G_t)_{t\ge 0}$. The second order mixed partial derivative of the covariance function $ R(t,\, s)=\mathbb{E}[G_t G_s]$ can be decomposed into two parts, one of which coincides with that of fractional Brownian motion and the other of which is bounded by $(ts)^{H-1}$ up to a constant factor. This condition is valid for a class of continuous Gaussian processes that fails to be self-similar or have stationary increments. %Some examples include the su…
Let $X_1, \ldots , X_n$ be i.i.d. random vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $\|X_1\| \le β$. Then, we show that $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}(X_1 + \ldots + X_n)$ converges to a Gaussian in quadratic transportation (also known as "Kantorovich" or "Wasserstein") distance at a rate of $O\left( \frac{\sqrt{d} β\log n}{\sqrt{n}} \right)$, improving a result of Valiant and Valiant. The main feature of our theorem is that the rate of convergence is within $\log n$ of optimal for $n, d \rightarrow \infty$.
We provide non-asymptotic convergence rates of the Polyak-Ruppert averaged stochastic gradient descent (SGD) to a normal random vector for a class of twice-differentiable test functions. A crucial intermediate step is proving a non-asymptotic martingale central limit theorem (CLT), i.e., establishing the rates of convergence of a multivariate martingale difference sequence to a normal random vector, which might be of independent interest. We obtain the explicit rates for the multivariate martingale CLT using a combination of Stein's method and Lindeberg's argument, which is then used in conjun…
Motivated by random evolutions which do not start from equilibrium, in a recent work, Peligrad and Volný (2018) showed that the quenched CLT (central limit theorem) holds for ortho-martingale random fields. In this paper, we study the quenched CLT for a class of random fields larger than the ortho-martingales. To get the results, we impose sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary random field admit an ortho-martingale approximation. More precisely, the sufficient conditions are of the Hannan's projective type. As applications, we establ…
In this paper, we derive a joint central limit theorem for random vector whose components are function of random sesquilinear forms. This result is a natural extension of the existing central limit theory on random quadratic forms. We also provide applications in random matrix theory related to large-dimensional spiked population models. For the first application, we find the joint distribution of grouped extreme sample eigenvalues correspond to the spikes. And for the second application, under the assumption that the population covariance matrix is diagonal with $k$ (fixed) simple spikes, we …
We derive explicit Berry-Esseen bounds in the total variation distance for the Breuer-Major central limit theorem, in the case of a subordinating function $φ$ satisfying minimal regularity assumptions. Our approach is based on the combination of the Malliavin-Stein approach for normal approximations with Gebelein's inequality, bounding the covariance of functionals of Gaussian fields in terms of maximal correlation coefficients.
We introduce a new method for obtaining quantitative convergence rates for the central limit theorem (CLT) in a high dimensional setting. Using our method, we obtain several new bounds for convergence in transportation distance and entropy, and in particular: (a) We improve the best known bound, obtained by the third named author, for convergence in quadratic Wasserstein transportation distance for bounded random vectors; (b) We derive the first non-asymptotic convergence rate for the entropic CLT in arbitrary dimension, for general log-concave random vectors; (c) We give an improved bound for…
The article is showing sharpness of central limit theorems of Kipnis and Varadhan, Derriennic and Lin, Maxwell and Woodroofe. In the case of the CLT of Derriennic and Lin (for Markov chains with a normal operator) it is shown that the assumption of normality cannot be relaxed. In the case of the CLT of Maxwell and Woodroofe, the example of Peligrad and Utev is improved in the sense of getting a convergence to different laws.
This paper provides a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for a process $\{θ_n, n\geq 0\}$ satisfying a stochastic approximation (SA) equation of the form $θ_{n+1} = θ_n + γ_{n+1} H(θ_n,X_{n+1})$; a CLT for the associated average sequence is also established. The originality of this paper is to address the case of controlled Markov chain dynamics $\{X_n, n\geq 0 \}$ and the case of multiple targets. The framework also accomodates (randomly) truncated SA algorithms. Sufficient conditions for CLT's to hold are provided as well as comments on how these conditions extend previous works (such as independen…
This paper is concerned with normal approximation under relaxed moment conditions using Stein's method. We obtain the explicit rates of convergence in the central limit theorem for (i) nonlinear statistics with finite absolute moment of order $2+δ\in(2,3];$ (ii) nonlinear statistics with vanishing third moment and finite absolute moment of order $3+δ\in(3,4].$ When applied to specific examples, these rates are of the optimal order $O(n^{-\fracδ{2}})$ and $O(n^{-\frac{1+δ}{2}}).$ Our proof are based on the covariance identify formula and simple observations about the solution of Stein's equatio…
We prove abstract bounds on the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances between non-randomly centered random sums of real i.i.d. random variables with a finite third moment and the standard normal distribution. Except for the case of mean zero summands, these bounds involve a coupling of the summation index with its size biased distribution as was previously considered in \cite{GolRin96} for the normal approximation of nonnegative random variables. When being specialized to concrete distributions of the summation index like the Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distribution, our bounds turn ou…
We obtain convergence rates (in the Levi-Prokhorove metric) in the functional central limit theorem (CLT) for partial sums $S_n=\sum_{j=1}^{n}ξ_{j,n}$ of triangular arrays $\{ξ_{1,n},ξ_{2,n},...,ξ_{n,n}\}$ satisfying some mixing and moment conditions (which are not necessarily uniform in $n$). For certain classes of additive functionals of triangular arrays of contracting Markov chains (in the sense of Dobrushin) we obtain rates which are close to the best rates obtained for independent random variables. In addition, we obtain close to optimal rates in the usual CLT and a moderate deviations p…
In this article, we try to give an answer to the simple question: ``\textit{What is the critical growth rate of the dimension $p$ as a function of the sample size $n$ for which the Central Limit Theorem holds uniformly over the collection of $p$-dimensional hyper-rectangles ?''}. Specifically, we are interested in the normal approximation of suitably scaled versions of the sum $\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_i$ in $\mathcal{R}^p$ uniformly over the class of hyper-rectangles $\mathcal{A}^{re}=\{\prod_{j=1}^{p}[a_j,b_j]\cap\mathcal{R}:-\infty\leq a_j\leq b_j \leq \infty, j=1,\ldots,p\}$, where $X_1,\dots,X_n$ …
Consider throwing $n$ balls at random into $m$ urns, each ball landing in urn $i$ with probability $p_i$. Let $S$ be the resulting number of singletons, i.e., urns containing just one ball. We give an error bound for the Kolmogorov distance from $S$ to the normal, and estimates on its variance. These show that if $n$, $m$ and $(p_i, 1 \leq i \leq m)$ vary in such a way that $\sup_i p_i = O(n^{-1})$, then $S$ satisfies a CLT if and only if $n^2 \sum_i p_i^2$ tends to infinity, and demonstrate an optimal rate of convergence in the CLT in this case. In the uniform case $(p_i \equiv m^{-1}) with $…
We introduce a new version of Stein's method that reduces a large class of normal approximation problems to variance bounding exercises, thus making a connection between central limit theorems and concentration of measure. Unlike Skorokhod embeddings, the object whose variance must be bounded has an explicit formula that makes it possible to carry out the program more easily. As an application, we derive a general CLT for functions that are obtained as combinations of many local contributions, where the definition of "local" itself depends on the data. Several examples are given, including the…
The paper is devoted to the numerical solutions of fractional PDEs based on its probabilistic interpretation, that is, we construct approximate solutions via certain Monte Carlo simulations. The main results represent the upper bound of errors between the exact solution and the Monte Carlo approximation, the estimate of the fluctuation via the appropriate central limit theorem(CLT) and the construction of confidence intervals. Moreover, we provide rates of convergence in the CLT via Berry-Esseen type bounds. Concrete numerical computations and illustrations are included.
Given a graph sequence $\{G_n\}_{n \geq 1}$ denote by $T_3(G_n)$ the number of monochromatic triangles in a uniformly random coloring of the vertices of $G_n$ with $c \geq 2$ colors. This arises as a generalization of the birthday paradox, where $G_n$ corresponds to a friendship network and $T_3(G_n)$ counts the number of triples of friends with matching birthdays. In this paper we prove a central limit theorem (CLT) for $T_3(G_n)$ with explicit error rates. The proof involves constructing a martingale difference sequence by carefully ordering the vertices of $G_n$, based on a certain combinat…
We establish inequalities for assessing the distance between the distribution of a (possibly multidimensional) functional of a Poisson random measure and that of a Gaussian element. Our bounds only involve add-one cost operators at the order one - that we evaluate and compare at two different scales - and are specifically tailored for studying the Gaussian fluctuations of sequences of geometric functionals displaying a form of weak stabilization - see Penrose and Yukich (2001) and Penrose (2005). Our main bounds extend the estimates recently exploited by Chatterjee and Sen (2017) in the proof …
We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the …
We compute explicit bounds in the Gaussian approximation of functionals of infinite Rademacher sequences. Our tools involve Stein's method, as well as the use of appropriate discrete Malliavin operators. Although our approach does not require the classical use of exchangeable pairs, we employ a chaos expansion in order to construct an explicit exchangeable pair vector for any random variable which depends on a finite set of Rademacher variables. Among several examples, which include random variables which depend on infinitely many Rademacher variables, we provide three main applications: (i) t…
We present a new approach, inspired by Stein's method, to prove a central limit theorem (CLT) for linear statistics of $β$-ensembles in the one-cut regime. Compared with the previous proofs, our result requires less regularity on the potential and provides a rate of convergence in the quadratic Kantorovich or Wasserstein-2 distance. The rate depends both on the regularity of the potential and the test functions, and we prove that it is optimal in the case of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) for certain polynomial test functions. The method relies on a general normal approximation result of …
Let $(X_i)$ be a stationary and ergodic Markov chain with kernel $Q$, $f$ an $L^2$ function on its state space. If $Q$ is a normal operator and $f = (I-Q)^{1/2}g$ (which is equivalent to the convergence of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}Q^kf}{n^{3/2}}$ in $L^2$), we have the central limit theorem (cf\. \cite{D-L 1}, \cite{G-L 2}). Without assuming normality of $Q$, the CLT is implied by the convergence of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{\|\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}Q^kf\|_2}{n^{3/2}}$, in particular by $\|\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}Q^kf\|_2 = o(\sqrt n/\log^q n)$, $q>1$ by \cite{M-Wu} and \cite{Wu-Wo} respective…
We extend the construction by Kuelske and Iacobelli of metastates in finite-state mean-field models in independent disorder to situations where the local disorder terms are are a sample of an external ergodic Markov chain in equilibrium. We show that for non-degenerate Markov chains, the structure of the theorems is analogous to the case of i.i.d. variables when the limiting weights in the metastate are expressed with the aid of a CLT for the occupation time measure of the chain. As a new phenomenon we also show in a Potts example that, for a degenerate non-reversible chain this CLT approximat…

We give error bounds which demonstrate optimal rates of convergence in the CLT for the total covered volume and the number of isolated shapes, for germ-grain models with fixed grain radius over a binomial point process of $n$ points in a toroidal spatial region of volume $n$. The proof is based on Stein's method via size-biased couplings.
We propose a new functional analytic approach to Stein's method of exchangeable pairs that does not require the pair at hand to satisfy any approximate linear regression property. We make use of this theory in order to derive abstract bounds on the normal and Gamma approximation of certain functionals in the Wasserstein distance. Moreover, we illustrate the relevance of this approach by means of three instances of situations to which it can be applied: Functionals of independent random variables, finite population statistics and functionals on finite groups. In the independent case, and in par…
We present bounds of quadratic form for the logarithm of the Gaussian Q-function. We also show an analytical method for deriving log-quadratic approximations of the Q-function and give an approximation with absolute error less than $10^{-3}$.
In this paper, we consider backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion (GBSDEs) under quadratic assumptions on coefficients. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution for such equations. On the one hand, a priori estimates are obtained by applying the Girsanov type theorem in the $G$-framework, from which we deduce the uniqueness. On the other hand, to prove the existence of solutions, we first construct solutions for discrete GBSDEs by solving corresponding fully nonlinear PDEs, and then approximate solutions for general quadratic GBSDEs in Banach spaces.
The paper studies a class of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes on the classical Wiener space. These processes are associated with a diffusion type Dirichlet form whose corresponding diffusion operator is unbounded in the Cameron-Martin space. It is shown that the distributions of certain finite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes converge weakly to the distribution of such an infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. For the infinite dimensional processes, the ordinary scalar quadratic variation is calculated. Moreover, relative to the stochastic calculus via regularization, the scalar …
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method, in order to derive explicit bounds in the Gaussian and Gamma approximations of random variables in a fixed Wiener chaos of a general Gaussian process. We also prove results concerning random variables admitting a possibly infinite Wiener chaotic decomposition. Our approach generalizes, refines and unifies the central and non-central limit theorems for multiple Wiener-Itô integrals recently proved (in several papers, from 2005 to 2007) by Nourdin, Nualart, Ortiz-Latorre, Peccati and Tudor. We apply our techniques to prove Berry-Esséen bounds in…
We study the discrete-time approximation for solutions of quadratic forward back- ward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) driven by a Brownian motion and a jump process which could be dependent. Assuming that the generator has a quadratic growth w.r.t. the variable z and the terminal condition is bounded, we prove the convergence of the scheme when the number of time steps n goes to infinity. Our approach is based on the companion paper [15] and allows to get a convergence rate similar to that of schemes of Brownian FBSDEs.
