The intrinsic excitation energy of fission fragments is dynamically evaluated in terms of the time dependent pairing equations. These equations are corroborated with two conditions. One of them fixes the number of particles and the another separates the pairing active spaces associated to the two fragments in the vicinity of the scission configuration. The fission path is obtained in the frame of the macroscopic-microscopic model. The single particle level schemes are obtained within the two center Woods-Saxon shell model. It is shown that the available intrinsic dissipated energy is not shared proportionally to the masses of the two fission fragments. If the heavy fragment possesses nucleon numbers close to the magic ones, the accumulated intrinsic excitation energy is lower than that of the light fragment.
The transformation of an atomic nucleus into two excited fission fragments is modeled as a strongly damped evolution of the nuclear shape, until scission occurs at a small critical neck radius, at which point the mass, charge, and shape of each fragment are extracted. The available excitation energy then is divided statistically on the basis of the microscopic level densities. This approach takes account of the important (and energy-dependent) finite-size effects. After the fragments have been fully accelerated and their shapes have relaxed to their equilibrium form, they undergo sequential ne…
We have, recently, shown that the general trends of partition-wise fission fragment mass distribution in heavy ion (HI) induced compound nuclear (CN) fission of heavy nuclei can be reproduced reasonably well by using the concept of isospin conservation, hence providing a direct evidence of isospin conservation in neutron-rich systems [1, 2, 3, 4]. In this paper, we test the concept of isospin conservation to reproduce the fission fragment mass distribution emerging from thermal neutron-induced CN fission reaction, 245Cm(nth, f). As earlier, we use Kelson's conjectures [5] to assign isospin to …
A new mode of nuclear fission has been proposed by the FOBOS collaboration, called Collinear Cluster Tri-partition (CCT), suggesting that three heavy fission fragments can be emitted perfectly collinearly in low-energy fission. It is surprising that CCT escaped observation for so long given the relatively high reported yield, of roughly 0.5% relative to binary fission. These claims call for an independent verification with a different experimental technique. Verification experiments based on direct observation of CCT fragments with fission fragment spectrometers require guidance with respect t…
The time dependent equations of motion for the pair breaking effect were corroborated with a condition that fixes dynamically the number of particles on the two fission fragment. The single particle level scheme was calculated with the Woods-Saxon superasymmetric two center shell model. This model provides a continuous variation of the energies from one nucleus up to two separated fragments. The dissipated energy resorts from the time dependent pairing equations. A peculiar phenomenon was observed experimentally in cold fission: the odd partition yields are favored over the even ones. This odd…
In the present paper, we explore the idea of isospin conservation in new situations and contexts based on the directions provided by our earlier works. We present the results of our calculations for the relative yields of neutron-rich fission fragments emitted in fast neutron-induced fission, 238U (n, fission) reaction by using the concept of the conservation of isospin and compare with the experimental data. Our results successfully reproduced the gross features of partition wise fission fragments distribution of 238U (n, fission). This confirms that in all kinds of fission, isospin remains p…
Two methods of the total excitation energy (TXE) partition between complementary fission fragments (FF) are compared: one based on the "classical" hypothesis of prompt neutron emission from fully accelerated FF with both fragments having the same residual nuclear temperature distribution, the second one on the systematic behavior of the experimental multiplicity ratio νH/(νL+νH) as a function of the heavy fragment mass number AH,the complementary FF having different residual temperature distributions. These methods were applied on six fissioning systems: 233,235U(nth,f), 239Pu(nth,f), 237Np(n5.5…
The prompt fission neutron spectra for neutron-induced fission of 233U for low energy neutrons (below 6 MeV) are calculated using the nuclear evaporation theory with a semi-empirical method, in which the partition of the total excitation energy between the fission fragments for the nth+233U fission reactions are determined with the available experimental and evaluation data. The calculated prompt fission neutron spectra agree well with the experimental data. The proportions of high- energy outgoing neutrons of prompt fission neutron spectrum versus incident neutron energies are investigated wi…
On the occasion of the $75^{th}$ anniversary of the fission phenomenon, we present a surprisingly simple result which highlights the important role of isospin and its conservation in neutron rich fission fragments. We have analysed the fission fragment mass distribution from two recent heavy-ion reactions $^{238}$U($^{18}$O,f) and $^{208}$Pb($^{18}$O,f) as well as a thermal neutron fission reaction $^{245}$Cm(n$^{th}$,f). We find that the conservation of the total isospin explains the overall trend in the observed relative yields of fragment masses in each fission pair partition. The isospin v…
The constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method is used with the Gogny interaction D1S to calculate potential energy surfaces of fissioning nuclei ${}^{226}$Th and ${}^{256,258,260}$Fm up to very large deformations. The constraints employed are the mass quadrupole and octupole moments. In this subspace of collective coordinates, many scission configurations are identified ranging from symmetric to highly asymmetric fragmentations. Corresponding fragment properties at scission are derived yielding fragment deformations, deformation energies, energy partitioning, neutron binding energies at sciss…
We present the results of our calculations for the relative yields of neutron-rich fission fragments emitted in $^{208}$Pb ($^{18}$O, fission) reaction by using the concept of the conservation of isospin and compare with the experimental data. We take into account a range of isospin values allowed by the isospin algebra and assume that the fission fragments are formed in Isobaric Analog States. We also take into account the neutron multiplicity data for various neutron-emission channels in each partition, and use them to obtain the weight factors in calculating the yields. We then calculate th…
We propose a framework to calculate the dynamics at the scission point of nuclear fission, based as far as possible on a discrete representation of orthogonal many-body configurations. Assuming axially symmetric scission shapes, we use the $K$ orbital quantum number to build a basis of wave functions. Pre-scission configurations are stable under mean-field dynamics while post-scission configurations evolve to separated fragments. In this first exploratory study, we analyze a typical fission trajectory through to scission in terms of these configurations. We find that there is a major rearrange…
Following upon our earlier paper [1] containing some initial results, we present detailed discussion and complete results in this paper, which provide the first direct evidence for the validity of isospin as a nearly good quantum number in neutron-rich systems. The evidence comes from the reproduction of the general features of the partition-wise relative yields of neutron-rich fission fragments produced in two heavy-ion induced fusion fission reactions, namely $^{208}$Pb ($^{18}$O, f) and $^{238}$U ($^{18}$O, f), by using the concept of isospin conservation. To fix the isospin values and use …
We calculate neutron multiplicities from fission fragments with specified mass numbers for events having a specified total fragment kinetic energy. The shape evolution from the initial compound nucleus to the scission configurations is obtained with the Metropolis walk method on the five-dimensional potential-energy landscape, calculated with the macroscopic-microscopic method for the three-quadratic-surface shape family. Shape-dependent microscopic level densities are used to guide the random walk, to partition the intrinsic excitation energy between the two proto-fragments at scission, and t…
The concept of collinear spontaneous true ternary fission of 252Cf is subject to critical analysis. The conclusion is that the collinear flight of the fragments turns out to be a natural and most probable mode. The collinearity arises in the model on the prescission stage as a result of the account of the principles of the collective Bohr's model. It is partly destroyed at the post-scission stage of spreading of the fragments due to their Coulomb interaction, with the allowance for the spin effects arising at the moment of scission. The final angular distribution of the fragments is calculated…
The origin of mass asymmetry in the fission of uranium at a low excitation energy is clarified by a trajectory analysis of the Langevin equation. The positions of the peaks in the mass distribution of fission fragments are mainly determined by fission saddle points originating from the shell correction energy. The widths of the peaks, on the other hand, result from a shape fluctuation around the scission point caused by the random force in the Langevin equation. We found that a random vibration in the oblate direction of fissioning fragments is essential for the fission process. According to t…

A simple model is proposed to examine the isotopic yields of the fragments from binary fission. For a given charge partition the peaks and widths in the isotope distributions are studied both with the liquid-drop model and with shell modifications. The basis for isoscaling is also explored. The symmetry energy plays a dominant role in both the distributions and the isoscaling behavior. A systematic increase in the isoscaling parameter, $α$, with the proton number of the fragment element is predicted in the context of the liquid-drop model. Deviations arising from shell corrections are explored…
An outstanding problem in the theory of nuclear fission is to understand the Hamiltonian dynamics at the scission point. In this work the fissioning nucleus is modeled in self-consistent mean-field theory as a set of Generator Coordinate (GCM) configurations passing through the scission point. In contrast to previous methods, the configurations are constructed in the Hartree-Fock approximation with axially symmetric mean fields and using the K-partition numbers as additional constraints. The goal of this work is to find paths through the scission point where the overlaps between neighboring co…
Fusion-fission dynamics is investigated with a special emphasis on fusion reactions at low energy for which shell effects and pairing correlations can play a crucial role leading in particular to multi-modal fission. To follow the dynamical evolution of an excited and rotating nucleus we solve a 2-dimensional Langevin equation taking explicitly light-particle evaporation into account. The confrontation theory-experiment is demonstrated to give interesting information on the model presented, its qualities as well as its shortcomings.
The existence of a new type of cluster decay called "collinear cluster tri-partition" (CCT) is discussed by an analysis of the landscape of the potential energy surface (PES). The total energy of the ternary system is found as a sum the binding energies of fragments and nucleus-nucleus interaction between them. The pre-scission state of the ternary system is assumed to be arranged as a chain of the three fragments along a straight line. Minima and valleys of the PES are determined by variation of the proton and neutron distributions between them. Pre-scission prompt emission of neutrons is ass…
In our previous publications we discussed various manifestations of a new decay channel of the low excited heavy nuclei called collinear cluster tri-partition (CCT). The most populated CCT mode was revealed in the mass correlation distribution of fission fragments (FFs) as a local region ("bump") of increased yields below the loci linked to the conventional binary fission. The bump was dubbed "Ni-bump" because it is centered at the masses associated with the magic isotopes of Ni. Intriguing features of the CCT, especially high collinearity of the CCT partners and relatively high probability co…
The mass asymmetry in the fission of U-236 at low excitation energy is clarified by the analysis of the trajectories obtained by solving the Langevin equations for the shape degrees of freedom. It is demonstrated that the position of the peaks in the mass distribution of fission fragments is determined mainly by the saddle point configuration originating from the shell correction energy. The width of the peaks, on the other hand, results from the shape fluctuations close to the scission point caused by the random force in the Langevin equation. We have found out that the fluctuations between e…
The $(n,γf)$ process is reviewed in light of modern nuclear reaction calculations in both slow and fast neutron-induced fission reactions on $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu. Observed fluctuations of the average prompt fission neutron multiplicity and average total $γ$-ray energy below 100 eV incident neutron energy are interpreted in this framework. The surprisingly large contribution of the M1 transitions to the pre-fission $γ$-ray spectrum of $^{239}$Pu is explained by the dominant fission probabilities of 0$^+$ and $2^+$ transition states, which can only be accessed from compound nucleus states fo…
A simplified, though realistic, model describing two receding and accelerating fission fragments, due to their mutual Coulomb repulsion, shows that fission fragments share excitation energy well after they ceased to exchange nucleons. This mechanism leads to a lower total kinetic energy of the fission fragments, particularly if the pygmy resonances in the fission fragments are excited. Even though the emphasis here is on fission, similar arguments apply to fragments in heavy-ion reactions.
Background: Recent experiments on beta-delayed fission reported an asymmetric mass yield in the neutron-deficient nucleus 180Hg. Earlier experiments in the mass region A=190-200 close to the beta-stability line, using the (p,f) and (α,f) reactions, observed a more symmetric distribution of fission fragments. While the beta-delayed fission of 180Hg can be associated with relatively low excitation energy, this is not the case for light-ion reactions, which result in warm compound nuclei. Purpose: To elucidate the roles of proton and neutron numbers and excitation energy in determining symmetric …
According to the driving potential of a fissile system, we propose a phenomenological fission potential for a description of the pre-neutron emission mass distributions of neutron-induced actinide fission. Based on the nucleus-nucleus potential with the Skyrme energy-density functional, the driving potential of the fissile system is studied considering the deformations of nuclei. The energy dependence of the potential parameters is investigated based on the experimental data for the heights of the peak and valley of the mass distributions. The pre-neutron emission mass distributions for reacti…
Recent measurements of reactor-produced antineutrino fluxes and energy spectra are inconsistent with models based on measured thermal fission beta spectra. In this paper, we examine the dependence of antineutrino production on fission neutron energy. In particular, the variation of fission product yields with neutron energy has been considered as a possible source of the discrepancies between antineutrino observations and models. In simulations of low-enriched and highly-enriched reactor core designs, we find a substantial fraction of fissions (from 5% to more than 40%) are caused by non-therm…
Fragment mass distributions from the fission of U and Pu isotopes at low excitation energies are studied using a dynamical model based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem formulated as Langevin equations. The present calculations reproduced the overall trend of the asymmetric mass distribution without parameter adjustment for the first time using the Langevin approach. The Langevin trajectories show a complicated time evolution on the potential surface, which causes the time delay of fission, showing that dynamical treatment is vital. It was found that the shell effect of the potential ener…
A static microscopic study of potential-energy surfaces within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-plus-BCS model is carried out for the 256Fm and 258Fm isotopes with the goal of deducing some properties of spontaneous fission. The calculated fission modes are found to be in agreement with the experimentaly observed asymmetric-to-symmetric transition in the fragment-mass distributions and with the high- and low-total-kinetic-energy modes experimentally observed in 258Fm. Most of the results are similar to those obtained in macroscopic-microscopic models as well as in recent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calcula…
Fission-fragment mass and total-kinetic-energy distributions following fission of the fermium isotopes $^{256,258,260}\text{Fm}$ at low excitation energy have been calculated using the Brownian shape-motion model. A transition from asymmetric fission in $^{256}\text{Fm}$ to symmetric fission in $^{258}\text{Fm}$ is obtained. The total-kinetic-energy distributions for the three isotopes show radically different behaviour due to varying contributions from different fission modes, with a double-humped distribution for $^{258}\text{Fm}$.
The Hauser-Feshbach Fission Fragment Decay (HF$^3$D) model is extended to calculate the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) for the thermal neutron induced fission on $^{235}$U, where the evaporated neutrons from all possible fission fragment pairs are aggregated. By studying model parameter sensitivities on the calculated PFNS, as well as non-statistical behavior of low-lying discrete level spin distribution, we conclude that discrepancies between the aggregation calculation and the experimental PFNS seen at higher neutron emission energies can be attributed to both the primary fission fra…
We present the schematic calculations within the Langevin approach in order to investigate the dependence of fission width on the memory time and the excitation energy at low temperatures where the quantum fluctuations play an important role. For this we consider the simple one-dimensional case with the potential energy given by two parabolic potentials (Kramers potential). For friction and the mass parameters we use the deformation independent values fitted to the results obtained earlier within the microscopic linear response theory. We have found out that at small excitation energies (compa…
Energy dependence of fission observables is a key issue for wide nuclear applications. We studied real-time fission dynamics from low-energy to high excitations in the compound nucleus $^{240}$Pu with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock+BCS approach. It is shown that the evolution time of the later phase of fission towards scission is considerably lengthened at finite temperature. As the role of dynamical pairing is vanishing at high excitations, the random transition between single-particle levels around the Fermi surface to mimic thermal fluctuations is indispensable to drive fission. The obtain…
We found that a true ternary fission with formation of a heavy third fragment (a new type of radioactivity) is quite possible for superheavy nuclei due to the strong shell effects leading to a three-body clusterization with the two doubly magic tin-like cores. The simplest way to discover this phenomenon in the decay of excited superheavy nuclei is a detection of two tin-like clusters with appropriate kinematics in low-energy collisions of medium mass nuclei with actinide targets. The three-body quasi-fission process could be even more pronounced for giant nuclear systems formed in collisions …
The characteristics of the odd-even effect in fission-fragment Z distributions are compared to a model based on statistical mechanics. Special care is taken for using a consistent description for the influence of pairing correlations on the nuclear level density. The variation of the odd-even effect with the mass of the fissioning nucleus and with fission asymmetry is explained by the important statistical weight of configurations where the light nascent fission fragment populates the lowest energy state of an even-even nucleus. This implies that entropy drives excitation energy and unpaired n…

Detailed assessments of the ability of recent theoretical approaches to modeling existing experimental data for ternary fission confirm earlier indications that the dominant mode of cluster formation in ternary fission is clusterization in very neutron rich, very low density, essentially chemically equilibrated, nucleonic matter. An extended study and comparison of these approaches applied to ternary fission yields in the thermal neutron induced reaction $^{241}$Pu($n_{\rm th}$,f) has been undertaken to refine the characterization of the source matter. The resonance gas approximation has been …
We have developed a Hauser-Feshbach fission fragment decay model, HF$^3$D, which can be applied to the statistical decay of more than 500 primary fission fragment pairs (1,000 nuclides) produced by the neutron induced fission of $^{235}$U. The fission fragment yield $Y(A)$ and the total kinetic energy TKE are model inputs, and we estimate them from available experimental data for the $^{235}$U(n$\rm_{th}$,f) system. The model parameters in the statistical decay calculation are adjusted to reproduce some fission observables, such as the neutron emission multiplicity $\overlineν$, its distributi…
Neutron star (NS) merger ejecta offer a viable site for the production of heavy r-process elements with nuclear mass numbers A >140. The crucial role of fission recycling is responsible for the robustness of this site against many astrophysical uncertainties. Here, we introduce new improvements to our scission-point model, called SPY, to derive the fission fragment distribution for all neutron-rich fissioning nuclei of relevance in r-process calculations. These improvements include a phenomenological modification of the scission distance and a smoothing procedure of the distribution. Such corr…
Background: The role of angular momentum in fission has long been discussed but the observable effects are difficult to quantify. Purpose: We discuss a variety of effects associated with angular momentum in fission and present quantitative illustrations. Methods: We employ the fission simulation model $\mathtt{FREYA}$ which is well suited for this purpose because it obeys all conservation laws, including linear and angular momentum conservation at each step of the process. We first discuss the implementation of angular momentum in $\mathtt{FREYA}$ and then assess particular observables, includ…
Eighty years after its experimental discovery, a microscopic description of induced nuclear fission based solely on the interactions between neutrons and protons and quantum many-body methods still poses formidable challenges. The goal of this paper is to contribute to the development of a predictive microscopic framework for the accurate calculation of static properties of fission fragments for hot fission and thermal or slow neutrons. To this end, we focus on the 239Pu(n,f) reaction and employ nuclear density functional theory with Skyrme energy densities. Potential energy surfaces are compu…
Fission-fragment mass and total-kinetic-energy (TKE) distributions following fission of even-even nuclides in the region $74 \leq Z \leq 126$ and $92 \leq N \leq 230$, comprising 896 nuclides have been calculated using the Brownian shape-motion method. The emphasis is the region of superheavy nuclei. To show compatibility with earlier results the calculations are extended to include earlier studied regions. An island of asymmetric fission is obtained in the superheavy region, $106\leq Z\leq114$ and $162\leq N\leq 176$, where the heavy fragment is found to be close to $^{208}$Pb and the light f…
The origin of the asymmetry in the fragment mass distribution of low-energy nuclear fission is considered from the semiclassical point of view. Using the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory, one can define and quantify the shell effect associated with spatially localized nascent-fragment (prefragment) part of the potential. We investigate the roles of prefragments in the deformed shell effect using a simple cavity potential model but with realistic shape degrees of freedom for describing the fission processes. The results suggest that the prefragment magic numbers play essential roles in deter…
The collective dynamics of low energy fission in 238U is described within a time-dependent formalism based on the Gaussian Overlap Approximation of the time-dependent Generator Coordinate Method. The intrinsic deformed configurations of the nucleus are determined from the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov procedure employing the effective force D1S with constraints on the quadrupole and octupole moments. Fragment kinetic energy and mass distributions are calculated and compared with experimental evaluations. The effect of the collective dynamics along the fission paths and the influence …
The microscopic description of nuclear fission still remains a topic of intense basic research. Un- derstanding nuclear fission, apart from a theoretical point of view, is of practical importance for energy production and the transmutation of nuclear waste. In nuclear astrophysics, fission sets the upper limit to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements via the r-process. In this work we initiated a systematic study of intermediate energy proton-induced fission using the Constrained Molecu- lar Dynamics (CoMD) code. The CoMD code implements an effective interaction with a nuclear matter compressi…
The anisotropy in the angular distribution of the fusion-fission and quasifission fragments for the $^{16}$O+$^{238}$U, $^{19}$F+$^{208}$Pb and $^{32}$S+$^{208}$Pb reactions is studied by analyzing the angular momentum distributions of the dinuclear system and compound nucleus which are formed after capture and complete fusion, respectively. The orientation angles of axial symmetry axes of colliding nuclei to the beam direction are taken into account for the calculation of the variance of the projection of the total spin onto the fission axis. It is shown that the deviation of the experimental…
Ternary fission yields in the reaction 241Pu(nth,f) are calculated using a new model which assumes a nucleation-time moderated chemical equilibrium in the low density matter which constitutes the neck region of the scissioning system. The temperature, density, proton fraction and fission time required to fit the experimental data are derived and discussed. A reasonably good fit to the experimental data is obtained. This model provides a natural explanation for the observed yields of heavier isotopes relative to those of the lighter isotopes, the observation of low proton yields relative to 2H …
We discuss the effect of kinetic energy of the relative motion becoming spurious for separate fragments on the selfconsistent mean-field fission barriers. The treatment of the relative motion in the cluster model is contrasted with the necessity of a simpler and approximate approach in the mean-field theory. A scheme of the energy correction to the Hartree-Fock is proposed. The results obtained with the effective Skyrme interaction SLy6 show that the correction, previously estimated as $\sim$ 8 MeV in $A=70-100$ nuclei, amounts to 4 MeV in the medium heavy nucleus $^{198}$Hg and to null in $^{…
By a proper choice of the excitation energy per nucleon we analyze the mass distributions of the nuclear fragmentation at various excitation energies. Starting from low energies (between 0.1 and 1 MeV/nucleon) up to higher energies about 12 MeV/n, we classified the mass yield characteristics for heavy nuclei (A>200) on the basis of Statistical Multifragmentation Model. The evaluation of fragment distribution with the excitation energy show that the present results exhibit the same trend as the experimental ones.

An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.
A regular pattern, revealing the leading role of the light-fragment nuclear charge, is found to emerge from a consistent analysis of the experimental information collected recently on low-energy asymmetric fission of neutron-deficient nuclei around lead. The observation is corroborated by a theoretical investigation within a microscopic framework, suggesting the importance of proton configurations driven by quadrupole-octupole correlations. This is in contrast to the earlier theoretical interpretations in terms of dominant neutron shells. The survey of a wider area of the nuclear chart by a se…
