Causal fermion systems are introduced as a general mathematical framework for formulating relativistic quantum theory. By specializing, we recover earlier notions like fermion systems in discrete space-time, the fermionic projector and causal variational principles. We review how an effect of spontaneous structure formation gives rise to a topology and a causal structure in space-time. Moreover, we outline how to construct a spin connection and curvature, leading to a proposal for a "quantum geometry" in the Lorentzian setting. We review recent numerical and analytical results on the support of minimizers of causal variational principles which reveal a "quantization effect" resulting in a discreteness of space-time. A brief survey is given on the correspondence to quantum field theory and gauge theories.
We give an elementary introduction to the theory of causal fermion systems, with a focus on the underlying physical ideas and the conceptual and mathematical foundations.
In this short review, we explain how and in which sense the causal action principle for causal fermion systems gives rise to classical gravity and the Einstein equations. Moreover, methods are presented for going beyond classical gravity, with applications to a positive mass theorem for static causal fermion systems, a connection between area change and matter flux and the construction of a quantum state.
The notions of two-dimensional area, Killing fields and matter flux are introduced in the setting of causal fermion systems. It is shown that for critical points of the causal action, the area change of two-dimensional surfaces under a Killing flow in null directions is proportional to the matter flux through these surfaces. This relation generalizes an equation in classical general relativity due to Ted Jacobson to the setting of causal fermion systems.
This paper is dedicated to give a concise introduction to the theory of causal fermion systems. After putting the theory of causal fermion systems into the historical context, we recall fundamental physical preliminaries. Afterwards, we enter the underlying ideas of the principle of the fermionic projector and clarify its connection to causal fermion systems. We finally outline the main structures of the theory of causal fermion systems.
A notion of entropy is introduced for causal fermion systems. This entropy is a measure of the state of disorder of a causal fermion system at a given time compared to the vacuum. The definition is given both in the finite and infinite-dimensional settings. General properties of the entropy are analyzed.
The theory of causal fermion systems is a recent approach to fundamental physics. Giving quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases, it is a candidate for a unified physical theory. The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, the so-called causal action principle. The causal action principle does not rely on a presupposed space-time structure. Instead, it is a variational principle for space-time itself as well as for all structures in space-time (like particles, fields, etc.). After a general motivation and introduction, we report on mathe…
This monograph introduces the basic concepts of the theory of causal fermion systems, a recent approach to the description of fundamental physics. The theory yields quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases and is therefore a candidate for a unified physical theory. From the mathematical perspective, causal fermion systems provide a general framework for describing and analyzing non-smooth geometries and "quantum geometries." The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, called the causal action principle. In addition to the basics, the book…
The dynamics of spinorial wave functions in a causal fermion system is studied. A so-called dynamical wave equation is derived. Its solutions form a Hilbert space, whose scalar product is represented by a conserved surface layer integral. We prove under general assumptions that the initial value problem for the dynamical wave equation admits a unique global solution. Causal Green's operators are constructed and analyzed. Our findings are illustrated in the example of the regularized Minkowski vacuum.
It is shown that the theory of causal fermion systems gives rise to a novel mechanism for dark matter and dark energy. This mechanism is first worked out for cubical subsets of Minkowski space with periodic boundary conditions. Then it is studied in Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberson-Walker spacetimes. The magnitude of the effect scales like one over the lifetime of the universe squared. In contrast to most models of dark matter and dark energy, our mechanism does not postulate any new particles. Instead, it is a result of the collective behavior of all the wave functions which form the Dirac sea, ne…

The theory of causal fermion systems is an approach to describe fundamental physics. Giving quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases, it is a candidate for a unified physical theory. We here give a non-technical introduction.
The theory of causal fermion systems is an approach to describe fundamental physics. We here introduce the mathematical framework and give an overview of the objectives and current results.
After reviewing the theory of "causal fermion systems" (CFS theory) and the "Events, Trees, and Histories Approach" to quantum theory (ETH approach), we compare some of the mathematical structures underlying these two general frameworks and discuss similarities and differences. For causal fermion systems, we introduce future algebras based on causal relations inherent to a causal fermion system. These algebras are analogous to the algebras previously introduced in the ETH approach. We then show that the spacetime points of a causal fermion system have properties similar to those of "events", a…
It is shown for causal fermion systems describing Minkowski-type spacetimes that an interacting causal fermion system at time $t$ gives rise to a distinguished state on the algebra generated by fermionic and bosonic field operators. The proof of positivity of the state is given and representations are constructed.
As toy models for space-time on the Planck scale, we consider examples of fermion systems in discrete space-time which are composed of one or two particles defined on two up to nine space-time points. We study the self-organization of the particles as described by a variational principle both analytically and numerically. We find an effect of spontaneous symmetry breaking which leads to the emergence of a discrete causal structure.
Causal fermion systems and Riemannian fermion systems are proposed as a framework for describing non-smooth geometries. In particular, this framework provides a setting for spinors on singular spaces. The underlying topological structures are introduced and analyzed. The connection to the spin condition in differential topology is worked out. The constructions are illustrated by many simple examples like the Euclidean plane, the two-dimensional Minkowski space, a conical singularity, a lattice system as well as the curvature singularity of the Schwarzschild space-time. As further examples, it …

The theory of causal fermion systems is a new physical theory which aims to describe a fundamental level of physical reality. Its mathematical core is the causal action principle. In this thesis, we develop a formalism which connects the causal action principle to a suitable notion of fields on space-time. We derive field equations from the causal action principle and find that the dynamics induced by the field equations conserve a symplectic form which gives rise to an Hamiltonian time evolution if the causal fermion system admits a notion of time. In this way, we establish the dynamics of ca…
The connection between symmetries and conservation laws as made by Noether's theorem is extended to the context of causal variational principles and causal fermion systems. Different notions of continuous symmetries are introduced. It is proven that these symmetries give rise to corresponding conserved quantities, expressed in terms of so-called surface layer integrals. In a suitable limiting case, the Noether-like theorems for causal fermion systems reproduce charge conservation and the conservation of energy and momentum in Minkowski space. Thus the conservation of charge and energy-momentum…

A mathematical framework is developed for the analysis of causal fermion systems in the infinite-dimensional setting. It is shown that the regular spacetime point operators form a Banach manifold endowed with a canonical Fréchet-smooth Riemannian metric. The so-called expedient differential calculus is introduced with the purpose of treating derivatives of functions on Banach spaces which are differentiable only in certain directions. A chain rule is proven for Hölder continuous functions which are differentiable on expedient subspaces. These results are made applicable to causal fermion syste…

The emergence of the concept of a causal fermion system is revisited and further investigated for the vacuum Dirac equation in Minkowski space. After a brief recap of the Dirac equation and its solution space, in order to allow for the effects of a possibly nonstandard structure of spacetime at the Planck scale, a regularization by a smooth cutoff in momentum space is introduced, and its properties are discussed. Given an ensemble of solutions, we recall the construction of a local correlation function, which realizes spacetime in terms of operators. It is shown in various situations that the …
Causal fermion systems incorporate local gauge symmetry in the sense that the Lagrangian and all inherent structures are invariant under local phase transformations of the physical wave functions. In the present paper it is explained and worked out in detail that, despite this local gauge freedom, the structures of a causal fermion system give rise to distinguished gauges where the local gauge freedom is fixed completely up to global gauge transformations. The main method is to use spectral and polar decompositions of operators on Hilbert spaces and on indefinite inner product spaces. We also …
A notion of local algebras is introduced in the theory of causal fermion systems. Their properties are studied in the example of the regularized Dirac sea vacuum in Minkowski space. The commutation relations are worked out, and the differences to the canonical commutation relations are discussed. It is shown that the spacetime point operators associated to a Cauchy surface satisfy a time slice axiom. It is proven that the algebra generated by operators in an open set is irreducible as a consequence of Hegerfeldt's theorem. The light cone structure is recovered by analyzing expectation values o…
In the theory of causal fermion systems, the physical equations are obtained as the Euler-Lagrange equations of a causal variational principle. Studying families of critical measures of causal variational principles, a class of conserved surface layer integrals is found and analyzed.
We propose a formulation of a Lorentzian quantum geometry based on the framework of causal fermion systems. After giving the general definition of causal fermion systems, we deduce space-time as a topological space with an underlying causal structure. Restricting attention to systems of spin dimension two, we derive the objects of our quantum geometry: the spin space, the tangent space endowed with a Lorentzian metric, connection and curvature. In order to get the correspondence to differential geometry, we construct examples of causal fermion systems by regularizing Dirac sea configurations i…
We propose a statistical mechanical derivation of Kahler-Einstein metrics, i.e. solutions to Einstein's vacuum field equations in Euclidean signature (with a cosmological constant) on a compact Kahler manifold X. The microscopic theory is given by a canonical free fermion gas on X whose one-particle states are pluricanonical holomorphic sections on X (coinciding with higher spin states in the case of a Riemann surface). A heuristic, but hopefully physically illuminating, argument for the convergence in the thermodynamical (large N) limit is given, based on a recent mathematically rigorous resu…
The causal action principle is analyzed for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by classical gravity as well as the strong and electroweak gauge fields of the standard model.
It is proven that the kernel of the fermionic projector of regularized Dirac sea vacua in Minkowski Space is $L^4$-integrable. The proof is carried out in the specific setting of a continuous exponentially-decaying cutoff in momentum space. As a direct consequence, the corresponding causal Lagrangian is shown to be $L^1$-integrable. Some topological features of the integrated causal Lagrangian are analyzed. In particular, local Hölder-like estimates are proved for continuous regular variations of spacetime, of which a few examples are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on first-order per…
We analyze the causal action principle for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by a left-handed, massive SU(2) gauge field and a gravitational field. The off-diagonal gauge potentials involve a unitary mixing matrix, which is similar to the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix in the standard model.
We give a functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold of finite lifetime. The integral kernel of the fermionic projector is represented by a two-point distribution on the manifold. By introducing an ultraviolet regularization, we get to the framework of causal fermion systems. The connection to the "negative-energy solutions" of the Dirac equation and to the WKB approximation is explained and quantified by a detailed analysis of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes.
We introduce and analyze a system of relativistic fermions in a space-time continuum, which interact via an action principle as previously considered in a discrete space-time. The model is defined by specifying the vacuum as a sum of Dirac seas corresponding to several generations of elementary particles. The only free parameters entering the model are the fermion masses. We find dynamical field equations if and only if the number of generations equals three. In this case, the dynamics is described by a massive axial potential coupled to the Dirac spinors. The coupling constant and the rest ma…
We give a microscopic derivation of perturbative quantum field theory, taking causal fermion systems and the framework of the fermionic projector as the starting point. The resulting quantum field theory agrees with standard quantum field theory on the tree level and reproduces all bosonic loop diagrams. The fermion loops are described in a different formalism in which no ultraviolet divergences occur.
Fermion systems in discrete space-time are introduced as a model for physics on the Planck scale. We set up a variational principle which describes a non-local interaction of all fermions. This variational principle is symmetric under permutations of the discrete space-time points. We explain how for minimizers of the variational principle, the fermions spontaneously break this permutation symmetry and induce on space-time a discrete causal structure.
The perturbation theory for critical points of causal variational principles is developed. We first analyze the class of perturbations obtained by multiplying the universal measure by a weight function and taking the push-forward under a diffeomorphism. Then the constructions are extended to convex combinations of such measures, leading to perturbation expansions for the mean and the fluctuation of the measure, both being coupled in higher order perturbation theory. It is explained how our methods and results apply to the causal action principle for causal fermion systems. It is shown how the …
The existence theory is developed for solutions of the inhomogeneous linearized field equations for causal variational principles. These equations are formulated weakly with an integral operator which is shown to be bounded and symmetric on a Hilbert space endowed with a suitably adapted weighted $L^2$-scalar product. Guided by the procedure in the theory of linear elliptic partial differential equations, we use the spectral calculus to define Sobolev-type Hilbert spaces and invert the linearized field operator as an operator between such function spaces. The uniqueness of the resulting weak s…
A free quantum field theory with Lorentz symmetry is derived for spin-half symplectic fermions in 2+1 dimensions. In particular, we show that fermionic spin-half fields may be canonically quantized in a free theory with a Klein-Gordon Lagrangian. This theory is shown to have all the required properties of a consistent free quantum field theory, namely causality, unitarity, adherence to the spin-statistics theorem, CPT symmetry, and the Hermiticity and positive definiteness of the Hamiltonian. The global symmetry of the free theory is Sp(4) $\simeq$ SO(5). Possible interacting theories of both …
We analyse nonperturbatively signal transmission patterns in Green's functions of interacting quantum fields. Quantum field theory is re-formulated in terms of the nonlinear quantum-statistical response of the field. This formulation applies equally to interacting relativistic fields and nonrelativistic models. Of crucial importance is that all causality properties to be expected of a response formulation indeed hold. Being by construction equivalent to Schwinger's closed-time-loop formalism, this formulation is also shown to be related naturally to both Kubo's linear response and Glauber's ma…
