Using Razborov's flag algebras we show that a triangle-free graph on n vertices contains at most (n/5)^5 cycles of length five. It settles in the affirmative a conjecture of Erdos.
It is shown that for $n\geq 141$, among all triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices, the complete equibipartite graph is the unique triangle-free graph with the greatest number of cycles.
A properly colored cycle (path) in an edge-colored graph is a cycle (path) with consecutive edges assigned distinct colors. A monochromatic triangle is a cycle of length $3$ with the edges assigned a same color. It is known that every edge-colored complete graph without containing monochromatic triangles always contains a properly colored Hamilton path. In this paper, we investigate the existence of properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs when monochromatic triangles are forbidden. We obtain a vertex-pancyclic analogous result combined with a characterization of all the excepti…
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) of a simple graph is a generalization of list coloring. It is known that planar graphs without 4-cycles adjacent to triangles are 4-choosable, and planar graphs without 4-cycles are DP-4-colorable. In this paper, we show that planar graphs without 4-cycles adjacent to triangles are DP-4-colorable, which is an extension of the two results above.
Given a triangle-free planar graph G and a 9-cycle C in G, we characterize situations where a 3-coloring of C does not extend to a proper 3-coloring of G. This extends previous results when C is a cycle of length at most 8.
Aksenov proved that in a planar graph G with at most one triangle, every precoloring of a 4-cycle can be extended to a 3-coloring of G. We give an exact characterization of planar graphs with two triangles in that some precoloring of a 4-cycle does not extend. We apply this characterization to solve the precoloring extension problem from two 4-cycles in a triangle-free planar graph in the case that the precolored 4-cycles are separated by many disjoint 4-cycles. The latter result is used in followup papers to give detailed information about the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embe…
The triangle graph of a graph $G$, denoted by ${\cal T}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices represent the triangles ($K_3$ subgraphs) of $G$, and two vertices of ${\cal T}(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding triangles share an edge. In this paper, we characterize graphs whose triangle graph is a cycle and then extend the result to obtain a characterization of $C_n$-free triangle graphs. As a consequence, we give a forbidden subgraph characterization of graphs $G$ for which ${\cal T}(G)$ is a tree, a chordal graph, or a perfect graph. For the class of graphs whose triangle graph is p…
We generalize a parity result of Fleishner and Stiebitz that being combined with Alon--Tarsi polynomial method allowed them to prove that a 4-regular graph formed by a Hamiltonian cycle and several disjoint triangles is always 3-choosable. Also we present a modification of polynomial method and show how it gives slightly more combinatorial information about colourings than direct application of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.
Wang and Lih in 2002 conjectured that every planar graph without adjacent triangles is 4-choosable. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph without any 4-cycle adjacent to two triangles is DP-4-colorable, which improves the results of Lam, Xu and Liu [Journal of Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 76 (1999) 117--126], of Cheng, Chen and Wang [Discrete Math., 339(2016) 3052--3057] and of Kim and Yu [arXiv:1709.09809v1].
More than twenty years ago Erdős conjectured~\cite{E1} that a triangle-free graph $G$ of chromatic number $k \geq k_0(\varepsilon)$ contains cycles of at least $k^{2 - \varepsilon}$ different lengths as $k \rightarrow \infty$. In this paper, we prove the stronger fact that every triangle-free graph $G$ of chromatic number $k \geq k_0(\varepsilon)$ contains cycles of $(\frac{1}{64} - \varepsilon)k^2 \log k$ consecutive lengths, and a cycle of length at least $(\tfrac{1}{4} - \varepsilon)k^2 \log k$. As there exist triangle-free graphs of chromatic number $k$ with at most roughly $4k^2 \log k$ v…
We study 3-coloring properties of triangle-free planar graphs $G$ with two precolored 4-cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ that are far apart. We prove that either every precoloring of $C_1\cup C_2$ extends to a 3-coloring of $G$, or $G$ contains one of two special substructures which uniquely determine which 3-colorings of $C_1\cup C_2$ extend. As a corollary, we prove that there exists a constant $D>0$ such that if $H$ is a planar triangle-free graph and $S\subseteq V(H)$ consists of vertices at pairwise distances at least $D$, then every precoloring of $S$ extends to a 3-coloring of $H$. This gives a p…
For a set of nonnegative integers $c_1, \ldots, c_k$, a $(c_1, c_2,\ldots, c_k)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that for every $i$, $1\le i\le k, G[V_i]$ has maximum degree at most $c_i$. We prove that all planar graphs without 4-cycles and no less than two edges between triangles are $(2,0,0)$-colorable.
A $(c_1,c_2,...,c_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a mapping $φ:V(G)\mapsto\{1,2,...,k\}$ such that for every $i,1 \leq i \leq k$, $G[V_i]$ has maximum degree at most $c_i$, where $G[V_i]$ denotes the subgraph induced by the vertices colored $i$. Borodin and Raspaud conjecture that every planar graph without $5$-cycles and intersecting triangles is $(0,0,0)$-colorable. We prove in this paper that such graphs are $(1,1,0)$-colorable.

For a simple digraph $G$ without directed triangles or digons, let $β(G)$ be the size of the smallest subset $X \subseteq E(G)$ such that $G\setminus X$ has no directed cycles, and let $γ(G)$ be the number of unordered pairs of nonadjacent vertices in $G$. In 2008, Chudnovsky, Seymour, and Sullivan showed that $β(G) \le γ(G)$, and conjectured that $β(G) \le γ(G)/2$. Recently, Dunkum, Hamburger, and Pór proved that $β(G) \le 0.88 γ(G)$. In this note, we prove that $β(G) \le 0.8616 γ(G)$.
DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring, which was introduced by Dvořák and Postle [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 (2018) 38--54]. Zhang [Inform. Process. Lett. 113 (9) (2013) 354--356] showed that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is 3-choosable. Liu et al. [Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 178--189] showed that every planar graph without 4-, 5-, 6- and 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable. In this paper, we show that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable, which generalizes these results. Yu et al. gave three Bord…
We show that the size of a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is bounded by a linear function of its genus. This strengthens the previous bound on the size of such graphs given by Thomassen. It also serves as the basic case for the description of the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embedded in a fixed surface, presented in a future paper of this series.
We conjecture that the balanced complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor,\lceil n/2 \rceil}$ contains more cycles than any other $n$-vertex triangle-free graph, and we make some progress toward proving this. We give equivalent conditions for cycle-maximal triangle-free graphs; show bounds on the numbers of cycles in graphs depending on numbers of vertices and edges, girth, and homomorphisms to small fixed graphs; and use the bounds to show that among regular graphs, the conjecture holds. We also consider graphs that are close to being regular, with the minimum and maximum degrees diffe…
Montassier, Raspaud, and Wang (2006) asked to find the smallest positive integers $d_0$ and $d_1$ such that planar graphs without $\{4,5\}$-cycles and $d^Δ\ge d_0$ are $3$-choosable and planar graphs without $\{4,5,6\}$-cycles and $d^Δ\ge d_1$ are $3$-choosable, where $d^Δ$ is the smallest distance between triangles. They showed that $2\le d_0\le 4$ and $d_1\le 3$. In this paper, we show that the following planar graphs are DP-3-colorable: (1) planar graphs without $\{4,5\}$-cycles and $d^Δ\ge 3$ are DP-$3$-colorable, and (2) planar graphs without $\{4,5,6\}$-cycles and $d^Δ\ge 2$ are DP-$3$-c…
We determine the $2$-color Ramsey number of a {\em connected} triangle matching $c(nK_3)$ which is any connected graph containing $n$ vertex disjoint triangles. We obtain that $R(c(nK_3),c(nK_3))=7n-2$, somewhat larger than in the classical result of Burr, Erd\H os and Spencer for a triangle matching, $R(nK_3,nK_3)=5n$. The motivation is to determine the Ramsey number $R(C_n^2,C_n^2)$ of the square of a cycle $C_n^2$. We apply our Ramsey result for connected triangle matchings to show that the Ramsey number of an "almost" square of a cycle $C_n^{2,c}$ (a cycle of length $n$ in which all but at…
Let G be a planar triangle-free graph and let C be a cycle in G of length at most 8. We characterize all situations where a 3-coloring of C does not extend to a proper 3-coloring of the whole graph.
A wheel is a graph consisting of an induced cycle of length at least four and a single additional vertex with at least three neighbours on the cycle. We prove that no Burling graph contains an induced wheel. Burling graphs are triangle-free and have arbitrarily large chromatic number, so this answers a question of Trotignon and disproves a conjecture of Scott and Seymour.
For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, let $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which contains none of the members of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. A longstanding problem in extremal graph theory asks to determine the function $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$. Here we give a new construction for dense graphs of girth at least five with arbitrary number of vertices, providing the first improvement on the lower bound of $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$ since 1976. As a corollary, this yields a negative answer to a problem in Chung-Graham [3].
For all $n\ge 9$, we show that the only triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices maximizing the number $5$-cycles are balanced blow-ups of a 5-cycle. This completely resolves a conjecture by Erdős, and extends results by Grzesik and Hatami, Hladký, Král', Norin and Razborov, where they independently showed this same result for large $n$ and for all $n$ divisible by $5$.
Since first introduced by Sudakov and Vu in 2008, the study of resilience problems in random graphs received a lot of attention in probabilistic combinatorics. Of particular interest are resilience problems of spanning structures. It is known that for spanning structures which contain many triangles, local resilience cannot prevent an adversary from destroying all copies of the structure by removing a negligible amount of edges incident to every vertex. In this paper we generalise the notion of local resilience to $H$-resilience and demonstrate its usefulness on the containment problem of the …
The optimality of the Erdős-Rado theorem for pairs is witnessed by the colouring $Δ_κ: [2^κ]^2 \rightarrow κ$ recording the least point of disagreement between two functions. This colouring has no monochromatic triangles or, more generally, odd cycles. We investigate a number of questions investigating the extent to which $Δ_κ$ is an \emph{extremal} such triangle-free or odd-cycle-free colouring. We begin by introducing the notion of $Δ$-regressive and almost $Δ$-regressive colourings and studying the structures that must appear as monochromatic subgraphs for such colourings. We also consider …
We characterise the quartic (i.e. 4-regular) multigraphs with the property that every edge lies in a triangle. The main result is that such graphs are either squares of cycles, line multigraphs of cubic multigraphs, or are obtained from these by a number of simple subgraph-replacement operations. A corollary of this is that a simple quartic graph with every edge in a triangle is either the square of a cycle, the line graph of a cubic graph or a graph obtained from the line multigraph of a cubic multigraph by replacing triangles with copies of K_{1,1,3}.
DP-coloring, also known as correspondence coloring, is introduced by Dvo{ř}{á}k and Postle. It is a generalization of list coloring. In this paper, we show that every connected toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles has minimum degree at most three unless it is a 2-connected $4$-regular graph with Euler characteristic $ε(G) = 0$. Consequently, every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In the final, we show that every planar graph without two certain subgraphs is DP-$4$-colorable. As immediate consequences, (i) every planar graph without…
In the first partial result toward Steinberg's now-disproved three coloring conjecture, Abbott and Zhou used a counting argument to show that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 through 11 is 3-colorable. Implicit in their proof is a fact about plane graphs: in any plane graph of minimum degree 3, if no two triangles share an edge, then triangles make up strictly less than 2/3 of the faces. We show how this result, combined with Kostochka and Yancey's resolution of Ore's conjecture for k = 4, implies that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 through 8 is 3-colorable.
We determine the smallest simple triangle-free binary matroids that have no five-element independent flat. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Nelson and Norin.
In an edge-colored graph $(G,c)$, let $d^c(v)$ denote the number of colors on the edges incident with a vertex $v$ of $G$ and $δ^c(G)$ denote the minimum value of $d^c(v)$ over all vertices $v\in V(G)$. A cycle of $(G,c)$ is called proper if any two adjacent edges of the cycle have distinct colors. An edge-colored graph $(G,c)$ on $n\geq 3$ vertices is called properly vertex-pancyclic if each vertex of $(G,c)$ is contained in a proper cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell$ with $3 \le \ell \le n$. Fujita and Magnant conjectured that every edge-colored complete graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices with…

A particular case of Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture, says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3. Recently, Kral, Hladky and Norine proved that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $0.3465n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3 (which currently is the best result). A weaker particular case says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum semi-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed triangle. In a recent paper, by using the result of Kral et al, the author proved that for $β\geq 0.343545$, any …
DP-coloring is a generalization of a list coloring in simple graphs. Many results in list coloring can be generalized in those of DP-coloring. Kim and Ozeki showed that planar graphs without $k$-cycles where $k=3,4,5,$ or $6$ are DP-$4$-colorable. Recently, Kim and Yu extended the result on $3$- and $4$-cycles by showing that planar graphs without triangles adjacent to $4$-cycles are DP-$4$-colorable. Xu and Wu showed that planar graphs without $5$-cycles adjacent simultaneously to $3$-cycles and $4$-cycles are $4$-choosable. In this paper, we extend the result on $5$-cycles and triangles adja…
A famous conjecture of Caccetta and Häggkvist is that in a digraph on $n$ vertices and minimum out-degree at least $\frac{n}{r}$ there is a directed cycle of length $r$ or less. We consider the following generalization: in an undirected graph on $n$ vertices, any collection of $n$ disjoint sets of edges, each of size at least $\frac{n}{r}$, has a rainbow cycle of length $r$ or less. We focus on the case $r=3$, and prove the existence of a rainbow triangle under somewhat stronger conditions than in the conjecture. For any fixed $k$ and large enough $n$, we determine the maximum number of edges …
We show that the minimum number of orientations of the edges of the n-vertex complete graph having the property that every triangle is made cyclic in at least one of them is $\lceil\log_2(n-1)\rceil$. More generally, we also determine the minimum number of orientations of $K_n$ such that at least one of them orients some specific $k$-cycles cyclically on every $k$-element subset of the vertex set. The questions answered by these results were motivated by an analogous problem of Vera T. Sós concerning triangles and $3$-edge-colorings. Some variants of the problem are also considered.
We study the number of edges, $e(G)$, in triangle-free graphs with a prescribed number of vertices, $n(G)$, independence number, $α(G)$, and number of cycles of length four, $\operatorname{N}(C_4;G)$. We in particular show that $$3e(G) - 17n(G) + 35α(G) + \operatorname{N}(C_4;G) \geq 0$$ for all triangle-free graphs $G$. We also characterise the graphs that satisfy this inequality with equality.
Using the formalism of flag algebras, we prove that every triangle-free graph $G$ with $n$ vertices contains at most $(n/5)^5$ cycles of length five. Moreover, the equality is attained only when $n$ is divisible by five and $G$ is the balanced blow-up of the pentagon. We also compute the maximal number of pentagons and characterize extremal graphs in the non-divisible case provided $n$ is sufficiently large. This settles a conjecture made by Erdős in 1984.
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. We use $e(G)$ and $c(G)$ to denote the number of edges of $G$ and the number of colors appearing on $E(G)$, respectively. For a vertex $v\in V(G)$, the \emph{color neighborhood} of $v$ is defined as the set of colors assigned to the edges incident to $v$. A subgraph of $G$ is \emph{rainbow} if all of its edges are assigned with distinct colors. The well-known Mantel's theorem states that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a triangle if $e(G)\geq\lfloor\frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor+1$. Rademacher (1941) showed that $G$ contains at least $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$ tri…
We introduce a new approach and prove that the maximum number of triangles in a $C_5$-free graph on $n$ vertices is at most $$(1 + o(1)) \frac{1}{3 \sqrt 2} n^{3/2}.$$ We also show a connection to $r$-uniform hypergraphs without (Berge) cycles of length less than six, and estimate their maximum possible size.
Motivated by his work on the classification of countable homogeneous oriented graphs, Cherlin asked about the typical structure of oriented graphs (i) without a transitive triangle, or (ii) without an oriented triangle. We give an answer to these questions (which is not quite the predicted one). Our approach is based on the recent `hypergraph containers' method, developed independently by Saxton and Thomason as well as by Balogh, Morris and Samotij. Moreover, our results generalise to forbidden transitive tournaments and forbidden oriented cycles of any order, and also apply to digraphs. Along…
Dvořák, Král' and Thomas gave a description of the structure of triangle-free graphs on surfaces with respect to 3-coloring. Their description however contains two substructures (both related to graphs embedded in plane with two precolored cycles) whose coloring properties are not entirely determined. In this paper, we fill these gaps.
An old theorem of Alexander Soifer's is the following: Given five points in a triangle of unit area, there must exist some three of them which form a triangle of area 1/4 or less. It is easy to check that this is not true if "five" is replaced by "four", but can the theorem be improved in any other way? We discuss in this article two different extensions of the original result. First, we allow the value of "small", 1/4, to vary. In particular, our main result is to show that given five points in a triangle of unit area, then there must exist some three of them determining a triangle of area 6/…
We determine the minimal density of triangles in a tripartite graph with prescribed edge densities. This extends a previous result of Bondy, Shen, Thomassé and Thomassen characterizing those edge densities guaranteeing the existence of a triangle in a tripartite graph. To be precise we show that a suitably weighted copy of the graph formed by deleting a certain 9-cycle from $K_{3,3,3}$ has minimal triangle density among all weighted tripartite graphs with prescribed edge densities.
We show that the choosability of the square of planar graphs of max degree 4 without five cycles is at most 12. Keywords: planar graph, choosability AMS Mathematics Subject Classification: 05C15
Motivated by Chudnovsky's structure theorem of bull-free graphs, Abu-Khzam, Feghali, and Müller have recently proved that deciding if a graph has a vertex partition into disjoint cliques and a triangle-free graph is NP-complete for five graph classes. The problem is trivial for the intersection of these five classes. We prove that the problem is NP-complete for the intersection of two subsets of size four among the five classes. We also show NP-completeness for other small classes, such as graphs with maximum degree 4 and line graphs.
