Let $B=(B_1(t),..,B_d(t))$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $α\le 1/4$, or more generally a Gaussian process whose paths have the same local regularity. Defining properly iterated integrals of $B$ is a difficult task because of the low Hölder regularity index of its paths. Yet rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic calculus with respect to $B$, or to solving differential equations driven by $B$. We intend to show in a forthcoming series of papers how to desingularize iterated integrals by a weak singular non-Gaussian perturbation of the Gaussian measure defined by a limit in law procedure.
Convergence is proved by using "standard" tools of constructive field theory, in particular cluster expansions and renormalization. These powerful tools allow optimal estimates of the moments and call for an extension of the Gaussian tools such as for instance the Malliavin calculus. This first paper aims to be both a presentation of the basics of rough path theory to physicists, and of perturbative field theory to probabilists; it is only heuristic, in particular because the desingularization of iterated integrals is really a {\em non-perturbative} effect. It is also meant to be a general motivating introduction to the subject, with some insights into quantum field theory and stochastic calculus. The interested reader should read in a second time the companion article \cite{MagUnt2} (or a preliminary version arXiv:1006.1255) for the constructive proofs.
The constructive martingale representation theorem of functional Itô calculus is extended, from the space of square integrable martingales, to the space of local martingales. The setting is that of an augmented filtration generated by a Wiener process.

Yet rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic calculus with respect to $B$, or to solving differential equations driven by $B$. We show in this paper how to obtain second-order iterated integrals as the limit when the ultra-violet cut-off goes to infinity of iterated integrals of weakly interacting fields defined using the tools of construc…
In this paper, we study rough path properties of stochastic integrals of Itô's type and Stratonovich's type with respect to $G$-Brownian motion. The roughness of $G$-Brownian Motion is estimated and then the pathwise Norris lemma in $G$-framework is obtained.

T. Lyons' rough path theory is something like a deterministic version of K. Ito's theory of stochastic differential equations, combined with ideas from K. T. Chen's theory of iterated path integrals. In this article we survey rough path theory, in particular, its probabilistic aspects.
Calculus via regularizations and rough paths are two methods to approach stochastic integration and calculus close to pathwise calculus. The origin of rough paths theory is purely deterministic, calculus via regularization is based on deterministic techniques but there is still a probability in the background. The goal of this paper is to establish a connection between stochastically controlled-type processes, a concept reminiscent from rough paths theory, and the so-called weak Dirichlet processes. As a by-product, we present the connection between rough and Stratonovich integrals for c{à}dl{…
This paper introduces the path derivatives, in the spirit of Dupire's functional Itô calculus, for the controlled paths in the rough path theory with possibly non-geometric rough paths. The theory allows us to deal with rough integration and rough PDEs in the same manner as standard stochastic calculus. We next study rough PDEs with coefficients depending on the rough path itself, which corresponds to stochastic PDEs with random coefficients. Such coefficients is less regular in the time variable and is not covered in the existing literature. The results are useful for studying viscosity solut…
We consider anticipative Stratonovich stochastic differential equations driven by some stochastic process (not necessarily a semi-martingale). No adaptedness of initial point or vector fields is assumed. Under a simple condition on the stochastic process, we show that the unique solution of the above SDE understood in the rough path sense is actually a Stratonovich solution. This condition is satisfied by the Brownian motion and the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than 1/4. As application, we obtain rather flexible results such as support theorems, large deviation princ…
In this paper we study rough differential equations driven by Gaussian rough paths from the viewpoint of Malliavin calculus. Under mild assumptions on coefficient vector fields and underlying Gaussian processes, we prove that solutions at a fixed time is smooth in the sense of Malliavin calculus. Examples of Gaussian processes include fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter larger than $1/4$.
We consider anticipative Stratonovich stochastic differential equations driven by some stochastic process lifted to a rough path. Neither adaptedness of initial point and vector fields nor commuting conditions between vector field is assumed. Under a simple condition on the stochastic process, we show that the unique solution of the above SDE understood in the rough path sense is actually a Stratonovich solution. We then show that this condition is satisfied by the Brownian motion. As application, we obtain rather flexible results such as support theorems, large deviation principles and Wong--…
We study different possibilities to apply the principles of rough paths theory in a non-commutative probability setting. First, we extend previous results obtained by Capitaine, Donati-Martin and Victoir in Lyons' original formulation of rough paths theory. Then we settle the bases of an alternative non-commutative integration procedure, in the spirit of Gubinelli's controlled paths theory, and which allows us to revisit the constructions of Biane and Speicher in the free Brownian case. New approximation results are also derived from the strategy.
Using fractional calculus we define integrals of the form $% \int_{a}^{b}f(x_{t})dy_{t}$, where $x$ and $y$ are vector-valued Hölder continuous functions of order $\displaystyle β\in (\frac13, \frac12)$ and $f$ is a continuously differentiable function such that $f'$ is $λ$-Höldr continuous for some $λ>\frac1β-2$. Under some further smooth conditions on $f$ the integral is a continuous functional of $x$, $y$, and the tensor product $x\otimes y$ with respect to the Hölder norms. We derive some estimates for these integrals and we solve differential equations driven by the function $y$. We discu…
In this article, we derive a Stratonovich and Skorohod type change of variables formula for a multidimensional Gaussian process with low Hölder regularity (typically lower than 1/4). To this aim, we combine tools from rough paths theory and stochastic analysis.
Questions regarding the continuity in $κ$ of the $SLE_κ$ traces and maps appear very naturally in the study of SLE. In order to study the first question, we consider a natural coupling of SLE traces: for different values of $κ$ we use the same Brownian motion. It is very natural to assume that with probability one, $SLE_κ$ depends continuously on $κ$. It is rather easy to show that $SLE$ is continuous in the Carathéodory sense, but showing that $SLE$ traces are continuous in the uniform sense is much harder. In this note we show that for a given sequence $κ_j\toκ\in (0, 8/3)$, for almost every…
We construct an explicit transitive free action of a Banach space of Hölder functions on the space of branched rough paths, which yields in particular a bijection between theses two spaces. This endows the space of branched rough paths with the structure of a principal homogeneous space over a Banach space and allows to characterize its automorphisms. The construction is based on the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula, on a constructive version of the Lyons-Victoir extension theorem and on the Hairer-Kelly map, which allows to describe branched rough paths in terms of anisotropic geometric rough…
Due to recent developments of Malliavin calculus for rough differential equations, it is now known that, under natural assumptions, the law of a unique solution at a fixed time has a smooth density function. Therefore, it is quite natural to ask whether or when the density is strictly positive. In this paper we study this problem from the viewpoint of Aida-Kusuoka-Stroock's general theory.
In this paper we derive a Bismut-Elworthy-Li type formula with respect to strong solutions to singular stochastic differential equations (SDE's) with additive noise given by a multi-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H<1/2$. "Singular" here means that the drift vector field of such equations is allowed to be merely bounded and integrable. As an application we use this representation formula for the study of price sensitivities of financial claims based on a stock price model with stochastic volatility, whose dynamics is described by means of fractional Brownian motion…
The $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion (FBM for short) $B_t=((B_t^{(1)},...,B_t^{(d)}),t\in\mathbb{R})$ with Hurst exponent $α$, $α\in(0,1)$, is a $d$-dimensional centered, self-similar Gaussian process with covariance ${\mathbb{E}}[B_s^{(i)}B _t^{(j)}]={1/2}δ_{i,j}(|s|^{2α}+|t|^{2α}-|t-s|^{2 α}).$ The long-standing problem of defining a stochastic integration with respect to FBM (and the related problem of solving stochastic differential equations driven by FBM) has been addressed successfully by several different methods, although in each case with a restriction on the range of eithe…
We consider finite dimensional rough differential equations driven by centered Gaussian processes. Combining Malliavin calculus, rough paths techniques and interpolation inequalities, we establish upper bounds on the density of the corresponding solution for any fixed time $t>0$. In addition, we provide Varadhan estimates for the asymptotic behavior of the density for small noise. The emphasis is on working with general Gaussian processes with covariance function satisfying suitable abstract, checkable conditions.
Malliavin Calculus is about Sobolev-type regularity of functionals on Wiener space, the main example being the Ito map obtained by solving stochastic differential equations. Rough path analysis is about strong regularity of solution to (possibly stochastic) differential equations. We combine arguments of both theories and discuss existence of a density for solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by a general class of non-degenerate Gaussian processes, including processes with sample path regularity worse than Brownian motion.
Following the approach and the terminology introduced in [A. Deya and R. Schott, On the rough paths approach to non-commutative stochastic calculus, J. Funct. Anal., 2013], we construct a product L{é}vy area above the $q$-Brownian motion (for $q\in [0,1)$) and use this object to study differential equations driven by the process. We also provide a detailled comparison between the resulting "rough" integral and the stochastic "It{ô}" integral exhibited by Donati-Martin in [C. Donati-Martin, Stochastic integration with respect to $q$ Brownian motion, Probab. Theory Related Fields, 2003].
We study a rough differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H$ $(1/4<H \le 1/2)$. Under Hörmander's condition on the coefficient vector fields, the solution has a smooth density for each fixed time. Using Watanabe's distributional Malliavin calculus, we obtain a short time full asymptotic expansion of the density under quite natural assumptions. Our main result can be regarded as a "fractional version" of Ben Arous' famous work on the off-diagonal asymptotics.
In 1990, in Itô's stochastic calculus framework, Aubin and Da Prato established a necessary and sufficient condition of invariance of a nonempty compact or convex subset $C$ of $\mathbb R^d$ ($d\in\mathbb N^*$) for stochastic differential equations (SDE) driven by a Brownian motion. In Lyons rough paths framework, this paper deals with an extension of Aubin and Da Prato's results to rough differential equations. A comparison theorem is provided, and the special case of differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion is detailed.
Based on the recent development of the framework of Volterra rough paths, we consider here the probabilistic construction of the Volterra rough path associated to the fractional Brownian motion with $H>\frac{1}{2}$ and for the standard Brownian motion. The Volterra kernel $k(t,s)$ is allowed to be singular, and behaving similar to $|t-s|^{-γ}$ for some $γ\geq 0$. The construction is done in both the Stratonovich and Itô sense. It is based on a modified Garsia-Rodemich-Romsey lemma which has an interest in its own right, as well as tools from Malliavin calculus. A discussion of challenges and p…
Motivated by a problematic coming from mathematical finance, this paper is devoted to existing and additional results of continuity and differentiability of the Itô map associated to rough differential equations. These regularity results together with Malliavin calculus are applied to sensitivities analysis for stochastic differential equations driven by multidimensional Gaussian processes with continuous paths, especially fractional Brownian motions. Precisely, in that framework, results on computation of greeks for Itô's stochastic differential equations are extended. An application in mathe…
We consider stochastic differential equations dY=V(Y)dX driven by a multidimensional Gaussian process X in the rough path sense. Using Malliavin Calculus we show that Y(t) admits a density for t in (0,T] provided (i) the vector fields V=(V_1,...,V_d) satisfy Hoermander's condition and (ii) the Gaussian driving signal X satisfies certain conditions. Examples of driving signals include fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4, the Brownian Bridge returning to zero after time T and the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
We study a stochastic differential equation in the sense of rough path theory driven by fractional Brownian rough path with Hurst parameter H (1/3 < H <= 1/2) under the ellipticity assumption at the starting point. In such a case, the law of the solution at a fixed time has a kernel, i.e., a density function with respect to Lebesgue measure. In this paper we prove a short time off-diagonal asymptotic expansion of the kernel under mild additional assumptions. Our main tool is Watanabe's distributional Malliavin calculus.
Motivated by the recent advances in the theory of stochastic partial differential equations involving nonlinear functions of distributions, like the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, we reconsider the unique solvability of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations, the drift of which is a distribution, by means of rough paths theory. Existence and uniqueness are established in the weak sense when the drift reads as the derivative of a H{ö}lder continuous function. Regularity of the drift part is investigated carefully and a related stochastic calculus is also proposed, which makes th…
The main tool for stochastic calculus with respect to a multidimensional process $B$ with small Hölder regularity index is rough path theory. Once $B$ has been lifted to a rough path, a stochastic calculus -- as well as solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by $B$ -- follow by standard arguments. Although such a lift has been proved to exist by abstract arguments \cite{LyoVic07}, a first general, explicit construction has been proposed in \cite{Unt09,Unt09bis} under the name of Fourier normal ordering. The purpose of this short note is to convey the main ideas of the Fourier no…
Under the key assumption of finite ρ-variation, ρ\in[1,2), of the covariance of the underlying Gaussian process, sharp a.s. convergence rates for approximations of Gaussian rough paths are established. When applied to Brownian resp. fractional Brownian motion (fBM), ρ=1 resp. ρ=1/(2H), we recover and extend the respective results of [Hu--Nualart; Rough path analysis via fractional calculus; TAMS 361 (2009) 2689-2718] and [Deya--Neuenkirch--Tindel; A Milstein-type scheme without Lévy area terms for SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion; AIHP (2011)]. In particular, we establish an a.s. rate…
Recently it was proved that the group of rough paths modulo tree-like equivalence is isomorphic to the corresponding signature group through the signature map S (a generalized notion of taking iterated path integrals). However, the proof of this uniqueness result does not contain any information on how to "see" the trajectory of a (tree-reduced) rough path from its signature, and a constructive understanding on the uniqueness result (in particular on the inverse of S) has become an interesting and important question. The aim of the present paper is to reconstruct a rough path from its signatur…
We investigate the optimal Hölder continuity and hitting probabilities for systems of stochastic heat equations and stochastic wave equations driven by an additive fractional Brownian sheet with temporal index $1/2$ and spatial index $H\le1/2$. Using stochastic calculus for fractional Brownian motion, we prove that these systems are well-posed and the solutions are Hölder continuous. Furthermore, the optimal Hölder exponents are obtained, which is the first result, as far as we knew, on the optimal Hölder continuity of SHEs and SWEs driven by fractional Brownian sheet that is rough in space. B…
Since T. Lyons invented rough path theory, one of its most successful applications is a new proof of Freidlin-Wentzell's large deviation principle for diffusion processes. In this paper we extend this method to the case of pinned diffusion processes under a mild ellipticity assumption. Besides rough path theory, our main tool is quasi-sure analysis, which is a kind of potential theory in Malliavin calculus.
We establish a Sewing lemma in the regime $γ\in \left( 0, 1 \right]$, constructing a Sewing map which is neither unique nor canonical, but which is nonetheless continuous with respect to the standard norms. Two immediate corollaries follow, which hold on any commutative graded connected locally finite Hopf algebra: a simple constructive proof of the Lyons-Victoir extension theorem which associates to a Hölder path a rough path, with the additional result that this map can be made continuous; the bicontinuity of a transitive free action of a space of Hölder functions on the set of Rough Paths.
Given a continuous Gaussian process $x$ which gives rise to a $p$-geometric rough path for $p\in (2,3)$, and a general continuous process $y$ controlled by $x$, under proper conditions we establish the relationship between the Skorohod integral $\int_0^t y_s {\mathrm{d}}^\diamond x_s$ and the Stratonovich integral $\int_0^t y_s {\mathrm{d}} {\mathbf x}_s$. Our strategy is to employ the tools from rough paths theory and Malliavin calculus to analyze discrete sums of the integrals.
We develop a nonanticipative calculus for functionals of a continuous semimartingale, using an extension of the Ito formula to path-dependent functionals which possess certain directional derivatives. The construction is based on a pathwise derivative, introduced by Dupire, for functionals on the space of right-continuous functions with left limits. We show that this functional derivative admits a suitable extension to the space of square-integrable martingales. This extension defines a weak derivative which is shown to be the inverse of the Ito integral and which may be viewed as a nonanticip…
Fourier normal ordering \cite{Unt09bis} is a new algorithm to construct explicit rough paths over arbitrary Hölder-continuous multidimensional paths. We apply in this article the Fourier normal ordering ordering algorithm to the construction of an explicit rough path over multi-dimensional fractional Brownian motion $B$ with arbitrary Hurst index $α$ (in particular, for $α\le 1/4$, which was till now an open problem) by regularizing the iterated integrals of the analytic approximation of $B$ defined in \cite{Unt08}. The regularization procedure is applied to 'Fourier normal ordered' iterated i…
Whenever an Itô-Wentsel type of formula holds for composition of flows of a certain differential dynamics, there exists locally a decomposition of the corresponding flow according to complementary distributions (or foliations, in the case of integrability of these distributions). Many examples have been proved in distinct context of dynamics: Stratonovich stochastic equations, Lévy driven noise, low regularity $α$-Hölder control functions ($ α\in (1/2,1]$), see e.g. [6], [7], [20], [21]. Here we present the proof of this categorical property: we illustrate with the $α$-Hölder rough path, $α\in…
We consider stochastic differential equations of the form $dY_t=V(Y_t)\,dX_t+V_0(Y_t)\,dt$ driven by a multi-dimensional Gaussian process. Under the assumption that the vector fields $V_0$ and $V=(V_1,\ldots,V_d)$ satisfy Hörmander's bracket condition, we demonstrate that $Y_t$ admits a smooth density for any $t\in(0,T]$, provided the driving noise satisfies certain nondegeneracy assumptions. Our analysis relies on relies on an interplay of rough path theory, Malliavin calculus and the theory of Gaussian processes. Our result applies to a broad range of examples including fractional Brownian m…
This paper is devoted to studying the averaging principle for fast-slow system of rough differential equations driven by mixed fractional Brownian rough path. The fast component is driven by Brownian motion, while the slow component is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H ~(1/3 < H\leq 1/2)$. Combining the fractional calculus approach to rough path theory and Khasminskii's classical time discretization method, we prove that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation in the $L^1$-sense. The averaging principle for a fast-slow…
