In [Ma1] S. Ma established a bijection between Fourier--Mukai partners of a K3 surface and cusps of the Kähler moduli space. The Kähler moduli space can be described as a quotient of Bridgeland's stability manifold. We study the relation between stability conditions $σ$ near to a cusp and the associated Fourier--Mukai partner Y in the following ways. (1) We compare the heart of $σ$ to the heart of coherent sheaves on Y. (2) We construct Y as moduli space of $σ$-stable objects.
An appendix is devoted to the group of auto-equivalences of the derived category which respect the component $Stab^\dagger(X)$ of the stability manifold.
Let S be the variety of irreducible sextics with six cusps as singularities. Let W be one of irreducible components of W. Denoting by M_4 the space of moduli of smooth curves of genus 4, the moduli map of W is the rational map from W to M_4 sending the general point of W, corresponding to a plane curve D, to the point of M_4 parametrizing the normalization curve of D. The number of moduli of W is, by definition the dimension of the image of W with respect to the moduli map. We know that this number is at most equal to seven. In this paper we prove that both irreducible components of S have num…
Consider the family S of irreducible plane curves of degree n with d nodes and k cusps as singularities. Let W be an irreducible component of S. We consider the natural rational map from W to the moduli space of curves of genus g=(n-1)(n-2)/2-d-k. We define the "number of moduli of W" as the dimension of the image of W with respect to this map. If W has the expected dimension equal to 3n+g-1-k, then the number of moduli of W is at most equal to the min(3g-3, 3g-3+ρ-k), dove ρis the Brill-Neother number of the linear series of degree n and dimension 2 on a smooth curve of genus g. We say that W…
Let S be a projective K3 surface. It is proved that the 0-dimensional cusps of the Kahler moduli of S are in one-to-one correspondence with the twisted Fourier-Mukai partners of S. This leads to a counting formula for the 0-dimensional cusps of the Kahler moduli. Applications to rational maps between K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers are given. When the Picard number of S is 1, the bijective correspondence is calculated explicitly.
Using lattice theory, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of Fourier-Mukai partners of a projective $K3$ surface and the set of 0-dimensional standard cusps of its Kahler moduli. We also study the relation between twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and general 0-dimensional cusps, and the relation between Fourier-Mukai partners with elliptic fibrations and certain 1-dimensional cusps.
We construct a compactification of the moduli space of Drinfeld modules of rank $r$ and level $N$ as a moduli space of $A$-reciprocal maps. This is closely related to the Satake compactification, but not exactly the same. The construction involves some technical assumptions on $N$ that are satisfied for a cofinal set of ideals $N$. In the special case $A={\mathbb F}_q[t]$ and $N=(t^n)$ we obtain a presentation for the graded ideal of Drinfeld cusp forms of level $N$ and all weights and can deduce a dimension formula for the space of cusp forms of any weight. We expect the same results in gener…
We study the moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces of Picard number at least 3, i.e. $U\oplus \langle -2k \rangle$-polarized K3 surfaces. Such moduli spaces are proved to be of general type for $k\geq 220$. The proof relies on the low-weight cusp form trick developed by Gritsenko, Hulek and Sankaran. Furthermore, explicit geometric constructions of some elliptic K3 surfaces lead to the unirationality of these moduli spaces for $k < 11$ and for 19 other isolated values up to $k=64$.
The moduli space of twisted stable maps into the stack $B(\Z/m\Z)^2$ carries a natural $S_n$-action and so its cohomology may be decomposed into irreducible $S_n$-representations. Working over $\Spec \Z[1/m]$ we show that the alternating part of the cohomology of one of its connected components is exactly the cohomology associated to cusp forms for $Γ(m)$. In particular this offers an alternative to Scholl's construction of the Chow motive associated to such cusp forms. This answers in the affirmative a question of Manin on whether one can replace the Kuga-Sato varieties used by Scholl with so…
We show that Martin Olsson's compactification of moduli space of polarized abelian varieties in \cite{ols08} can be interpreted in terms of KSBA stable pairs. We find that there is a canonical set of divisors $S(K_2)$ associated with each cusp. Near the cusp, a polarized semiabelic scheme $(\mathcal{X}, G,\mathcal{L})$ is the canonical degeneration given by the compactification if and only if $(\mathcal{X},G,Θ)$ is an object in $\overline{\mathscr{AP}}_{g,d}$ for any $Θ\in S(K_2)$. Moreover, we give an alternative construction of the compactification by using mirror symmetry. We construct a to…
We prove that the moduli space A_{11}^{lev} of (1,11) polarized abelian surfaces with level structure of canonical type is birational to Klein's cubic hypersurface: a^2b+b^2c+c^2d+d^2e+e^2a=0 in P^4. Therefore, A_{11}^{lev} is unirational but not rational, and there are no Gamma_{11}-cusp forms of weight 3. The same methods also provide an easy proof of the rationality of A_{9}^{lev}.
In this paper, we initiate our investigation of log canonical models for the moduli space of curves with the boundary divisor $\a \d$ as we decrease $\a$ from 1 to 0. We prove that for the first critical value $\a = 9/11$, the log canonical model is isomorphic to the moduli space of pseudostable curves, which have nodes and cusps as singularities. We also show that $\a = 7/10$ is the next critical value, i.e., the log canonical model stays the same in the interval $(7/10, 9/11]$. In the appendix, we develop a theory of log canonical models of stacks that explains how these can be expressed in …
Barth and Nieto have found a remarkable quintic threefold which parametrizes Heisenberg invariant Kummer surfaces which belong to abelian surfaces with a (1,3)-polarization and a lecel 2 structure. A double cover of this quintic, which is also a Calabi-Yau variety, is birationally equivalent to the moduli space {\cal A}_3(2) of abelian surfaces with a (1,3)-polarization and a level 2 structure. As a consequence the corresponding paramodular group Γ_3(2) has a unique cusp form of weight 3. In this paper we find this cusp form which is Δ_1^3. The form Δ_1 is a remarkable weight 1 cusp form with …
We study natural families of d-bar operators on the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles. Applying a families index theorem for hyperbolic cusp operators from our previous work, we find formulae for the Chern characters of the associated index bundles. The contributions from the cusps are explicitly expressed in terms of the Chern characters of natural vector bundles related to the parabolic structure. We show that our result implies formulae for the Chern classes of the associated determinant bundles consistent with a result of Takhtajan and Zograf.
We show that for $α\in (2/3, 7/10)$, the log canonical model $\bar M_4(α)$ of the pair $(\bar M_4, αδ)$ is isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar M_4^{hs}$ of h-semistable curves, and that there is a birational morphism $Ξ: \bar M_4^{hs} \to \bar M_4(2/3)$ that contracts the locus of curves $C_1\cup_p C_2$ consisting of genus two curves meeting in a node $p$ such that $p$ is a Weierstrass point of $C_1$ or $C_2$. To obtain this morphism, we construct a compact moduli space $\bar M_{2,1}^{hs}$ of pointed genus two curves that have nodes, ordinary cusps and tacnodes as singularity, and prove that …
We prove that the moduli space of stable n-pointed curves of genus one and the projector associated to the alternating representation of the symmetric group on n letters define (for n>1) the Chow motive corresponding to cusp forms of weight n+1 for SL(2,Z). This provides an alternative (in level one) to the construction of Scholl.
Let A_2 be the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian surfaces and V a smooth l-adic sheaf on A_2 associated to an irreducible rational finite dimensional representation of Sp(4). We give an explicit expression for the cohomology of V in any degree in terms of Tate type classes and Galois representations attached to elliptic and Siegel cusp forms. This confirms a conjecture of Faber and van der Geer. As an application we prove a dimension formula for vector-valued Siegel cusp forms for Sp(4,Z) of weight three, which had been conjectured by Ibukiyama.
For moduli space of stable parabolic bundles on a compact Riemann surface, we derive an explicit formula for the curvature of its canonical line bundle with respect to Quillen's metric and interpret it as a local index theorem for the family of dbar-operators in associated parabolic endomorphism bundles. The formula consists of two terms: one standard (proportional to the canonical Kaehler form on the moduli space), and one nonstandard, called a cuspidal defect, that is defined by means of special values of the Eisenstein-Maass series. The cuspidal defect is explicitly expressed through curvat…
We study an example of a Teichmueller curve in the moduli space of algebraic curves of genus 2 coming from an origami S. It is particular in that its points admit the Klein four group as a subgroup of the automorphism group. We give an explicit description of its points in terms of affine plane curves, we show that the Teichmueller curve is a nonsingular, affine curve of genus 0 and we determine the number of cusps in the boundary of the moduli space.
We describe typical degenerations of quadratic differentials thus describing ``generic cusps'' of the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles. The part of the boundary of the moduli space which does not arise from ``generic'' degenerations is often negligible in problems involving information on compactification of the moduli space. However, even for a typical degeneration one may have several short loops on the Riemann surface which shrink simultaneously. We explain this phenomenon, describe all rigid configurations of short loops, present a detailed desc…
Gives the most precise available description of the p-Frattini module for any p-perfect finite group G=G_0 (Thm. 2.8), and therefore of the groups G_{k,ab}, k \ge 0, from which we form the abelianized M(odular) T(ower). §4 includes a classification of Schur multiplier quotients, from which we figure two points (see the html file http://www.math.uci.edu/~mfried/paplist-mt/rims-rev.html): 1. Whether there is a non-empty MT over a given Hurwitz space component at level 0; and 2. whether all cusps above a given level 0 o-p' cusp are p-cusps. The diophantine discussions of §5 remind how Demjanenko-…
In the geometric version of the Langlands correspondence, irregular singular point connections play the role of Galois representations with wild ramification. In this paper, we develop a geometric theory of fundamental strata to study irregular singular connections on the projective line. Fundamental strata were originally used to classify cuspidal representations of the general linear group over a local field. In the geometric setting, fundamental strata play the role of the leading term of a connection. We introduce the concept of a regular stratum, which allows us to generalize the conditio…
The hyperbolic metric for the punctured unit disc in the Euclidean plane is singular at the origin. A renormalization of the metric at the origin is provided by the Euclidean metric. For Riemann surfaces there is a unique germ for the isometry class of a complete hyperbolic metric at a cusp. The renormalization for the punctured unit disc provides a renormalization for a hyperbolic metric at a cusp. For a holomorphic family of punctured Riemann surfaces the family of (co)tangent spaces along a puncture defines a tautological holomorphic line bundle over the base of the family. The Hermitian co…
For singular metrics, there is no Quillen metric formalism on cohomology determinant. In this paper, we develop an admissible theory, with which the arithmetic Deligne-Riemann-Roch isometry can be established for singular metrics. As an application, we first study Weil-Petersson metrics and Takhtajan-Zograf metrics on moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces, and then give a more geometric interpretation of our determinant metrics in terms of Selberg zeta functions. We end this paper by proposing an arithmetic factorization for Weil-Petersson metrics, cuspidal metrics and Selberg zeta funct…
We give a geometric invariant theory (GIT) construction of the log canonical model $\bar M_g(α)$ of the pairs $(\bar M_g, αδ)$ for $α\in (7/10 - ε, 7/10]$ for small $ε\in \mathbb Q_+$. We show that $\bar M_g(7/10)$ is isomorphic to the GIT quotient of the Chow variety bicanonical curves; $\bar M_g(7/10-ε)$ is isomorphic to the GIT quotient of the asymptotically-linearized Hilbert scheme of bicanonical curves. In each case, we completely classify the (semi)stable curves and their orbit closures. Chow semistable curves have ordinary cusps and tacnodes as singularities but do not admit elliptic t…
The theory of Q-Cartier divisors on the space of n-pointed, genus 0, stable maps to projective space is considered. Generators and Picard numbers are computed. A recursive algorithm computing all top intersection products of Q-Divisors is established. As a corollary, an algorithm computing all characteristic numbers of rational curves in P^r is proven (including simple tangency conditions). Computations of these characteristic numbers are carried out in many examples. The degree of the 1-cuspidal rational locus in the linear system of degree d plane curves is explicitly evaluated.
We define etale cohomology of the moduli spaces of mixed characteristic local shtukas so that it gives smooth representations including the case where the relevant elements of the Kottwitz set are both non-basic. Then we relate the etale cohomology of different moduli spaces of mixed characteristic local shtukas using convolution morphisms, duality morphisms and twist morphisms. As an application, we show the Kottwitz conjecture in some new cases including the cases for all inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_3$ and minuscule cocharacters. We study also some non-minuscule cases and show that the Kottw…
This article deals with the tamely ramified geometric Langlands correspondence for GL_2 on $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{F}_q}^1$, where $q$ is a prime power, with tame ramification at four distinct points $D = \{\infty, 0,1, t\} \subset \mathbf{P}^1(\mathbf{F}_q)$. We describe in an explicit way (1) the action of the Hecke operators on a basis of the cusp forms, which consists of $q$ elements; and (2) the correspondence that assigns to a pure irreducible rank 2 local system $E$ on $\mathbf{P}^1 \setminus D$ with unipotent monodromy its Hecke eigensheaf on the moduli space of rank 2 parabolic vector bu…
The level moduli space $A_g^{4,8}$ is mapped to the projective space by means of gradients of odd Theta functions, such a map turning out no to be injective in the genus 2 case. In this work a congruence subgroup $Γ$ is located between $Γ_2(4,8)$ and $Γ_2(2,4)$ in such a way the map factors on the related level moduli space $A_Γ$, the new map being injective on $A_Γ$. Satake's compactification $\text{Proj}A(Γ)$ and the desingularization $\text{Proj}S(Γ)$ are also due to be investigated, since the map does not extend to the boundary of the compactification; to aim at this, an algebraic descript…
We express the Masur-Veech volume and the area Siegel-Veech constant of the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differential with simple poles as polynomials in the intersection numbers of psi-classes supported on the boundary cycles of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves. Our formulae are derived from lattice point count involving the Kontsevich volume polynomials that also appear in Mirzakhani's recursion for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli space of bordered hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. A similar formula for the Masur-Veech volume (though without exp…
Let $\mathcal N$ be the moduli space of sextics with 3 (3,4)-cusps. The quotient moduli space ${\mathcal N}/G$ is one-dimensional and consists of two components, ${\mathcal N}_{torus}/G$ and ${\mathcal N}_{gen}/G$. By quadratic transformations, they are transformed into one-parameter families $C_s$ and $D_s$ of cubic curves respectively. We study the Mordell-Weil torsion groups of cubic curves $C_s$ over $\bfQ$ and $D_s$ over $\bfQ(\sqrt{-3})$ respectively. We show that $C_{s}$ has the torsion group $\bf Z/3\bf Z$ for a generic $s\in \bf Q$ and it also contains subfamilies which coincide with …
A special cubic fourfold is a smooth hypersurface of degree three and dimension four that contains a surface not homologous to a complete intersection. Special cubic fourfolds give rise to a countable family of Noether-Lefschetz divisors C_d in the moduli space C of smooth cubic fourfolds. These divisors are irreducible 19-dimensional varieties birational to certain orthogonal modular varieties. We use the "low-weight cusp form trick" of Gritsenko, Hulek, and Sankaran to obtain information about the Kodaira dimension of C_d. For example, if d = 6n + 2, then we show that C_d is of general type …
In this paper, we describe a new type of surgery for non-compact Riemann surfaces that naturally appear when colliding two holes or two sides of the same hole in an orientable Riemann surface with boundary (and possibly orbifold points). As a result of this surgery, bordered cusps appear on the boundary components of the Riemann surface. In Poincaré uniformization, these bordered cusps correspond to ideal triangles in the fundamental domain. We introduce the notion of bordered cusped Teichmüller space and endow it with a Poisson structure, quantization of which is achieved with a canonical qua…
A protagonist here is a new-type invariant for type II degenerations of K3 surfaces, which is explicit PL (piecewise linear) convex function from the interval with at most 18 non-linear points. Forgetting its actual function behaviour, it also classifies the type II degenerations into several combinatorial types, depending on the type of root lattices as appeared in classical examples. From differential geometric viewpoint, the function is obtained as the density function of the limit measure on the collapsing hyperKahler metrics to conjectural segments, as in the work of Honda-Sun-Zhang. On t…
The Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is an isomorphism between the de Rham moduli space and the Betti moduli space, defined by associating to each Fuchsian system its monodromy representation class. In 1997 Hitchin proved that this map is a symplectomorphism. In this paper, we address the question of what happens to this theory if we extend the de Rham moduli space by allowing connections with higher order poles. In our previous paper arXiv:1511.03851, based on the idea of interpreting higher order poles in the connection as boundary components with bordered cusps (vertices of ideal triangles in…
Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface c…
We consider the question: ``How bad can the deformation space of an object be?'' The answer seems to be: ``Unless there is some a priori reason otherwise, the deformation space may be as bad as possible.'' We show this for a number of important moduli spaces. More precisely, every singularity of finite type over Z (up to smooth parameters) appears on: the Hilbert scheme of curves in projective space; and the moduli spaces of smooth projective general-type surfaces (or higher-dimensional varieties), plane curves with nodes and cusps, stable sheaves, isolated threefold singularities, and more. T…
