Let $L$ be a linear space of real bounded random variables on the probability space $(Ω,\mathcal{A},P_0)$. There is a finitely additive probability $P$ on $\mathcal{A}$, such that $P\sim P_0$ and $E_P(X)=0$ for all $X\in L$, if and only if $c\,E_Q(X)\leq\text{ess sup}(-X)$, $X\in L$, for some constant $c>0$ and (countably additive) probability $Q$ on $\mathcal{A}$ such that $Q\sim P_0$. A necessary condition for such a $P$ to exist is $\bar{L-L_\infty^+}\,\cap L_\infty^+=\{0\}$, where the closure is in the norm-topology. If $P_0$ is atomic, the condition is sufficient as well. In addition, there is a finitely additive probability $P$ on $\mathcal{A}$, such that $P\ll P_0$ and $E_P(X)=0$ for all $X\in L$, if and only if $\text{ess sup}(X)\geq 0$ for all $X\in L$.
This note contains a short discussion on the sufficiency of finite optimality in martingale transport. It is shown that finitely minimal martingale measures are solutions of the martingale transport problem when the cost function is upper semi-continuous and bounded from above by a sum of integrable functions. As an application a transparent proof of the uniqueness of left-monotone martingale transport plans is given.
Consider a real-valued branching random walk in the boundary case. Using the techniques developed by Aïdékon and Shi [5], we give two integral tests which describe respectively the lower limits for the minimal position and the upper limits for the associated additive martingale.
This work shows how exponential concentration inequalities for additive functionals of stochastic processes over a finite time interval can be derived from concentration inequalities for martingales. The approach is entirely probabilistic and naturally includes time-inhomogeneous and non-stationary processes as well as initial laws concentrated on a single point. The class of processes studied includes martingales, Markov processes and general square integrable processes. The general approach is complemented by a simple and direct method for martingales, diffusions and discrete-time Markov pro…
We give an explicit description of the law of terminal value $W$ of additive martingales in a remarkable branching stable process. We show that the right tail probability of the terminal value decays exponentially fast and the left tail probability follows that $-\log \mathbb{P}(W<x) \sim \frac{1}{2} (\log x)^2$ as $x \rightarrow 0+$. These are in sharp contrast with results in the literature such as Liu (2000, 2001) and Buraczewski (2009). We further show that the law of $W$ is self-decomposable, and therefore, possesses a unimodal density. We specify the asymptotic behavior at $0$ and at $+\…
The paper introduces and investigates the natural extension to the path-dependent setup of the usual concept of canonical Markov class introduced by Dynkin and which is at the basis of the theory of Markov processes. That extension, indexed by starting paths rather than starting points will be called path-dependent canonical class. Associated with this is the generalization of the notions of semi-group and of additive functionals to the path-dependent framework. A typical example of such family is constituted by the laws $({\mathbb P}^{s,$η$})\_{(s,η) \in{\mathbb R} \times Ω}$ , where for fixe…
General Markov chains with a countably additive transition probability in arbitrary phase space are considered. Markov operators extend from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. In the author's papers a theorem was earlier proved that if all invariant finitely additive measures of a Markov chain are countably additive, i.e. there are no invariant purely finitely additive measures, then their subspace is finite-dimensional and the Markov chain satisfies the Doob-Doeblin quasicompactness conditions. In the same paper, a partial inversion of this th…
We define a family of stochastic Loewner evolution-type processes in finitely connected domains, which are called continuous LERW (loop-erased random walk). A continuous LERW describes a random curve in a finitely connected domain that starts from a prime end and ends at a certain target set, which could be an interior point, or a prime end, or a side arc. It is defined using the usual chordal Loewner equation with the driving function being $\sqrt{2}B(t)$ plus a drift term. The distributions of continuous LERW are conformally invariant. A continuous LERW preserves a family of local martingale…
The concept of finitely additive supermartingales, originally due to Bochner, is revived and developed. We exploit it to study measure decompositions over filtered probability spaces and the properties of the associated Doléans-Dade measure. We obtain versions of the Doob Meyer decomposition and, as an application, we establish a version of the Bichteler and Dellacherie theorem with no exogenous probability measure.
In this paper, we consider general Markov chains (MC), specified by the transition probability (kernel) $ P (x, E) $, finitely additive in the second argument. Such MC are studied within the framework of the functional operator treatment. The state space (phase space) of the MC $ X $ has any cardinality, and the sigma-algebra $ Σ$ is discrete, i.e. is the set of all subsets in $ X $. This construction of the phase space $ (X, Σ) $ allows us to decompose the Markov kernel $ P (x, E) $ into the sum of two components - countably additive and purely finitely additive in the second argument and mea…
We consider, and make precise, a certain extension of the Radon-Nikodym derivative operator, to functions which are additive, but not necessarily sigma-additive, on a subset of a given sigma-algebra. We give applications to probability theory; in particular, to the study of $μ$-Brownian motion, to stochastic calculus via generalized Itô-integrals, and their adjoints (in the form of generalized stochastic derivatives), to systems of transition probability operators indexed by families of measures $μ$, and to adjoints of composition operators.
IIn this paper we provide predictable and chaotic representations for Itô-Markov additive processes $X$. Such a process is governed by a finite-state CTMC $J$ which allows one to modify the parameters of the Itô-jump process (in so-called regime switching manner). In addition, the transition of $J$ triggers the jump of $X$ distributed depending on the states of $J$ just prior to the transition. This family of processes includes Markov modulated Itô-Lévy processes and Markov additive processes. The derived chaotic representation of a square-integrable random variable is given as a sum of stocha…
We study the limits of the additive and derivative martingales of one-dimensional branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment. Then we prove the existence of pulsating travelling wave solutions of the corresponding F-KPP equation in the supercritical and critical cases by representing the solutions probabilistically in terms of the limits of the additive and derivative martingales. We also prove that there is no pulsating travelling wave solution in the subcritical case. Our main tools are the spine decomposition and martingale change of measures.
We consider additive functionals of stationary Markov processes and show that under Kipnis-Varadhan type conditions they converge in rough path topology to a Stratonovich Brownian motion, with a correction to the Levy area that can be described in terms of the asymmetry (non-reversibility) of the underlying Markov process. We apply this abstract result to three model problems: First we study random walks with random conductances under the annealed law. If we consider the Ito rough path, then we see a correction to the iterated integrals even though the underlying Markov process is reversible. …
By using limit theorems of uniform mixing Markov processes and martingale difference sequences, the strong law of large numbers, central limit theorem, and the law of iterated logarithm are established for additive functionals of path-dependent stochastic differential equations.
Some classical mass transportation problems are investigated in a finitely additive setting. Let $Ω=\prod_{i=1}^nΩ_i$ and $\mathcal{A}=\otimes_{i=1}^n\mathcal{A}_i$, where $(Ω_i,\mathcal{A}_i,μ_i)$ is a ($σ$-additive) probability space for $i=1,\ldots,n$. Let $c:Ω\rightarrow [0,\infty]$ be an $\mathcal{A}$-measurable cost function. Let $M$ be the collection of finitely additive probabilities on $\mathcal{A}$ with marginals $μ_1,\ldots,μ_n$. If couplings are meant as elements of $M$, most classical results of mass transportation theory, including duality and attainability of the Kantorovich inf…
We introduce the local martingale problem associated to semilinear stochastic evolution equations driven by a cylindrical Wiener process and establish a one-to-one correspondence between solutions of the martingale problem and (analytically) weak solutions of the stochastic equation. We also prove that the solutions of well-posed equations are strong Markov processes. We apply our results to semilinear stochastic equations with additive noise where the semilinear term is merely measurable and to stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with Hölder continuous multiplicative noise.
General Markov chains in an arbitrary phase space are considered in the framework of the operator treatment. Markov operators continue from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. Cycles of measures generated by the corresponding operator are constructed, and algebraic operations on them are introduced. One of the main results obtained is that any cycle of finitely additive measures can be uniquely decomposed into the coordinate-wise sum of a cycle of countably additive measures and a cycle of purely finitely additive measures. We have proved theorem…
The probabilistic type spaces in the sense of Harsanyi [Management Sci. 14 (1967/68) 159--182, 320--334, 486--502] are the prevalent models used to describe interactive uncertainty. In this paper we examine the existence of a universal type space when beliefs are described by finitely additive probability measures. We find that in the category of all type spaces that satisfy certain measurability conditions ($κ$-measurability, for some fixed regular cardinal $κ$), there is a universal type space (i.e., a terminal object) to which every type space can be mapped in a unique beliefs-preserving wa…
We consider general Markov chains with discrete time in an arbitrary measurable (phase) space and homogeneous in time. Markov chains are defined by the classical transition function which within the framework of the operator treatment generates a conjugate pair of linear Markov operators in the Banach space of measurable bounded functions and in the Banach space of bounded finite additive measures. It is proved that the well-known Doeblin condition $ (D) $ of ergodicity (quasi\-compactness) of the Markov chain is equivalent to the condition $ (*) $: all finitely additive invariant measures of …
We obtain bounds on the distribution of the maximum of a martingale with fixed marginals at finitely many intermediate times. The bounds are sharp and attained by a solution to $n$-marginal Skorokhod embedding problem in Obłój and Spoida [An iterated Azéma-Yor type embedding for finitely many marginals (2013) Preprint]. It follows that their embedding maximizes the maximum among all other embeddings. Our motivating problem is superhedging lookback options under volatility uncertainty for an investor allowed to dynamically trade the underlying asset and statically trade European call options fo…
Quantization provides a very natural way to preserve the convex order when approximating two ordered probability measures by two finitely supported ones. Indeed, when the convex order dominating original probability measure is compactly supported, it is smaller than any of its dual quantizations while the dominated original measure is greater than any of its stationary (and therefore any of its optimal) quadratic primal quantization. Moreover, the quantization errors then correspond to martingale couplings between each original probability measure and its quantization. This permits to prove th…
Evans (1992) described the semi-group of a superprocess with quadratic branching mechanism under a martingale change of measure in terms of the semi-group of an immortal particle and the semigroup of the superprocess prior to the change of measure. This result, commonly referred to as the spine decomposition, alludes to a pathwise decomposition in which independent copies of the original process `immigrate' along the path of the immortal particle. For branching particle diffusions the analogue of this decomposition has already been demonstrated in the pathwise sense, see for example Hardy and …
An asymptotic expansion is established for time averages of translation flows on flat surfaces. This result, which extends earlier work of A.Zorich and G.Forni, yields limit theorems for translation flows. The argument, close in spirit to that of G.Forni, uses the approximation of ergodic integrals by holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles on trajectories of the flows. The space of holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles is finite-dimensional, and is given by an explicit construction. First, a symbolic representation for a uniquely ergodic translation flow is obtained following S.Ito and A.M. Vershik…
In this paper, we study Markov chains (MC) on topological spaces within the framework of the operator approach. We extend the Markov operator from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. Cesaro means for a Markov sequence of measures and their asymptotic behavior in the weak topology are considered. It is proved ergodic theorem that in order for the Cesaro means to converge weakly to some bounded regular finitely additive (or countably additive) measure it is necessary and sufficient that all invariant finitely additive measures are not separable fr…
In this paper we will show that the solution of 1D stochastic parabolic equation with additive noise converges to a martingale (independent upon space variable) when we rescale noise at the extremum points of the process.
The Skorokhod embedding problem aims to represent a given probability measure on the real line as the distribution of Brownian motion stopped at a chosen stopping time. In this paper, we consider an extension of the optimal Skorokhod embedding problem to the case of finitely-many marginal constraints. Using the classical convex duality approach together with the optimal stopping theory, we obtain the duality results which are formulated by means of probability measures on an enlarged space. We also relate these results to the problem of martingale optimal transport under multiple marginal cons…
We consider a piecewise-deterministic Markov process (PDMP) with general conditional distribution of inter-occurrence time, which is called a general PDMP here. Our purpose is to establish the theory of measure-valued generator for general PDMPs. The additive functional of a semi-dynamic system (SDS) is introduced firstly, which presents us an analytic tool for the whole paper. The additive functionals of a general PDMP are represented in terms of additive functionals of the SDS. The necessary and sufficient conditions of being a local martingale or a special semimartingale for them are given.…
Usually the problem of drift estimation for a diffusion process is considered under the hypothesis of ergodicity. It is less often considered under the hypothesis of null-recurrence, simply because there are fewer limit theorems and existing ones do not apply to the whole null-recurrent class. The aim of this paper is to provide some limit theorems for additive functionals and martingales of a general (ergodic or null) recurrent diffusion which would allow us to have a somewhat unified approach to the problem of non-parametric kernel drift estimation in the one-dimensional recurrent case. As a…
Given a generalization of Lebesgue decomposition we obtain an extension to the finitely additive setting of the theorems of Halmos and Savage and of Yan.
We establish a unconditional and optimal strong convergence rate of Wong--Zakai type approximations in Banach space norm for a parabolic stochastic partial differential equation with monotone drift, including the stochastic Allen--Cahn equation, driven by an additive Brownian sheet. The key ingredient in the analysis is the fully use of additive nature of the noise and monotonicity of the drift to derive a priori estimation for the solution of this equation, in combination with the factorization method and stochastic calculus in martingale type 2 Banach spaces applied to deduce sharp error est…
Stemming from de Finetti's work on finitely additive coherent probabilities, the paradigm of coherence has been applied to many uncertainty calculi in order to remove structural restrictions on the domain of the assessment. Three possible approaches to coherence are available: coherence as a consistency notion, coherence as fair betting scheme, and coherence in terms of penalty criterion. Due to its intimate connection with (finitely additive) probability theory, Dempster-Shafer theory allows notions of coherence in all the forms recalled above, presenting evident similarities with probability…
One of the peculiarities of power and gas markets is the delivery mechanism of forward contracts. The seller of a futures contract commits to deliver, say, power, over a certain period, while the classical forward is a financial agreement settled on a maturity date. Our purpose is to design a Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework for an additive, mean-reverting, multicommodity market consisting of forward contracts of any delivery period. The main assumption is that forward prices can be represented as affine functions of a universal source of randomness. This allows us to completely characterize the …
Consider a Markov chain $\{X_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ with an ergodic probability measure $π$. Let $Ψ$ a function on the state space of the chain, with $α$-tails with respect to $π$, $α\in (0,2)$. We find sufficient conditions on the probability transition to prove convergence in law of $N^{1/α}\sum_n^N Ψ(X_n)$ to a $α$-stable law. ``Martingale approximation'' approach and ``coupling'' approach give two different sets of conditions. We extend these results to continuous time Markov jump processes $X_t$, whose skeleton chain satisfies our assumptions. If waiting time between jumps has finite expectation, …
