Gauge-invariant treatments of general-relativistic higher-order perturbations on generic background spacetime is proposed. We show the fact that the linear-order metric perturbation is decomposed into gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts, which was the important premise of this general framework. This means that the development the higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory on generic background spacetime is possible.
An outline of a proof of the decomposition of linear metric perturbations into gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts on an arbitrary background spacetime which admits ADM decomposition is briefly discussed. We explicitly construct the gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts of the linear metric perturbations based on some assumptions. This implies that we can develop the higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory on an arbitrary background spacetime.
An outline of a proof of the decomposition of the linear metric perturbation into gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts on an arbitrary background spacetime is discussed through an exlicit construction of gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts. Although this outline is incomplete, yet, due to our assumptions, we propose a conjecture which states that the linear metric perturbation is always decomposed into its gauge-invariant and gageu-variant parts. If this conjecture is true, we can develop the higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory on an arbitrary background spacetime.
An outline of a proof of the decomposition of linear metric perturbations into gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts on the an arbitrary background spacetime which admits ADM decomposition is discussed. We explicitly construct the gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts of the linear metric perturbations through the assumption of the existence of some Green functions. We also confirm the result through another approach. This implies that we can develop the higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory on an arbitrary background spacetime. Remaining issues to complete the general-framework…
The decomposition of the linear-order metric perturbation is discussed in the context of the higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory. We show that the linear order metric perturbation is decomposed into gauge-invariant and gauge-variant parts on the general background spacetime which admits ADM decomposition. This decomposition was an important premise of the general framework of the higher order gauge-invariant perturbation theory proposed in the papers [K. Nakamura, Prog. Theor. Phys. vol.110 (2003), 723; ibid. vol.113 (2005), 481]. This implies that we can develop the higher-order …
Construction of the gauge-invariant variables for the linear metric perturbation, which was proposed in the paper [K. Nakamura, arXiv:1101.1147], is discussed through an alternative approach. Our starting point of the construction of the gauge-invariant variables is an non-trivial non-local decomposition of the linear metric perturbation. Assuming the existence of some Green functions, we reproduce results in the above paper. This supports the consistency of the result and implies that one can develop the general-relativistic higher-order gauge-invariant perturbation theory on general backgrou…
A group theoretical mechanism for unification of local gauge and spacetime symmetries is introduced. No-go theorems prohibiting such unification are circumvented by slightly relaxing the usual requirement on the gauge group: only the so called Levi factor of the gauge group needs to be compact semisimple, not the entire gauge group. This allows a non-conventional supersymmetry-like extension of the gauge group, glueing together the gauge and spacetime symmetries, but not needing any new exotic gauge particles. It is shown that this new relaxed requirement on the gauge group is nothing but the …
We study the infrared (long distance) behavior of the free photon field in de Sitter spacetime. Using a two-parameter family of gauge fixing terms, we show that the infrared (IR) behavior of the two-point function is highly gauge-dependent and ranges from vanishing to growing. This situation is in disagreement with its counterpart in flat spacetime, where the two-point function vanishes in the IR for any choice of the gauge fixing parameters. A criterion to isolate the "physical" part of the two-point function is given and is shown to lead to a well-behaved two-point function in the IR.
We review two procedures for constructing the vector potential of the electromagnetic field on Kerr spacetime, namely, the classic method of Cohen & Kegeles, yielding $A^μ$ in a radiation gauge, and the newer method of Frolov et al., yielding $A^μ$ in Lorenz gauge. We demonstrate that the vector potentials are related by straightforward gauge transformations, which we give in closed form. We obtain a new result for a separable Hertz potential $H^{μν}$ such that $A_{\text{lor}}^μ= \nabla_νH^{μν}$.
A gauge-invariant treatment of the monopole- ($l=0$) and dipole ($l=1$) modes in linear perturbations of the Schwarzschild background spacetime is proposed. Through this gauge-invariant treatment, we derived the solutions to the linearized Einstein equation for these modes with a generic matter field. In the vacuum case, these solutions include the Kerr parameter perturbations in the $l=1$ odd modes and the additional mass parameter perturbations of the Schwarzschild mass in the $l=0$ even modes. The linearized version of Birkhoff's theorem is also confirmed in a gauge-invariant manner. In thi…
We develop a general setting for the quantization of linear bosonic and fermionic field theories subject to local gauge invariance and show how standard examples such as linearized Yang-Mills theory and linearized general relativity fit into this framework. Our construction always leads to a well-defined and gauge-invariant quantum field algebra, the centre and representations of this algebra, however, have to be analysed on a case-by-case basis. We discuss an example of a fermionic gauge field theory where the necessary conditions for the existence of Hilbert space representations are not met…
We consider (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant as a constrained dynamical system. By applying Dirac's gauge fixing procedure, we implement the constraints and determine the Dirac bracket on the gauge-invariant phase space. The chosen gauge fixing conditions have a natural physical interpretation and specify an observer in the spacetime. We derive explicit expressions for the resulting Dirac brackets and discuss their geometrical interpretation. In particular, we show that specifying an observer with respect to two point particles gives rise to conical spacetimes, whose deficit …
In previous work, starting from the Moyal plane, we formulated interacting theories of matter and gauge fields with only the former fields twisted. In this approach, gauge theories, including the standard model, can be formulated without new gauge degrees of freedom. We show their underlying symmetry algebra to be Poincaré quasi-Hopf . The associated spacetime algebra is hence non-associative.
We study the Lagrangian description of chiral bosons, p-form gauge fields with (anti-)self-dual gauge field strengths, in D=2p+2 dimensional spacetime of nontrivial topology. We show that the manifestly Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariant Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin (PST) approach is consistent and produces the (anti-)self-duality equation also in topologically nontrivial spacetime. We discuss in what circumstances the nontrivial topology makes difference between two disconnected, `da-timelike' and `da-spacelike' branches of the PST system, the gauge fixed version of which are described by not manife…

In order to study gravitational waves in any realistic astrophysical scenario, one must consider geometry perturbations up to second order. Here, we present a general technique for studying linear and quadratic perturbations on a spacetime with torsion. Besides the standard metric mode, a "torsionon" perturbation mode appears. This torsional mode will be able to propagate only in a certain kind of theories.
Comparing a gauge-invariant formulation and a "conventional complete gauge-fixing approach" for $l=0,1$ mode perturbations on the Schwarzschild background spacetime
Emergent gravity is based on the Darboux theorem or the Moser lemma in symplectic geometry stating that the electromagnetic force can always be eliminated by a local coordinate transformation as far as U(1) gauge theory is defined on a spacetime with symplectic structure. In this approach, the spacetime geometry is defined by U(1) gauge fields on noncommutative (NC) spacetime. Accordingly the topology of spacetime is determined by the topology of NC U(1) gauge fields. We show that the topology change of spacetime is ample in emergent gravity and the subsequent resolution of spacetime singulari…
Gravitational perturbations of anti-deSitter spacetime play important roles in AdS/CFT correspondence and the brane world scenario. In this paper, we develop a gauge-invariant formalism of gravitational perturbations of maximally symmetric spacetimes including anti-deSitter spacetime. Existence of scalar-type master variables is shown and the corresponding master equations are derived.
Blowing-up solutions of Klein-Gordon equations with gauge variant semilinear terms in Friedmann-Lemaítre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes under finite speed of propagation
Using the parametrised representation of field theory (in which the location in spacetime of a part of a field is itself represented by a map from the base manifold to Minkowski spacetime) I demonstrate that in both local and global cases, internal (Yang-Mills-type) and spacetime (Poincaré) symmetries can be treated precisely on a par, so that gravitational theories may be regarded as gauge theories in a completely standard sense.
Gauge theories of conformal spacetime symmetries are presented which merge features of Yang-Mills theory and general relativity in a new way. The models are local but nonpolynomial in the gauge fields, with a nonpolynomial structure that can be elegantly written in terms of a metric (or vielbein) composed of the gauge fields. General relativity itself emerges from the construction as a gauge theory of spacetime translations. The role of the models within a general classification of consistent interactions of gauge fields is discussed as well.
We show how to generate the AdS spacetime metric in general Lorentz covariant gauges. In particular we propose an iterative method for solving the Lorentz gauge.
This article investigates the stability of a generic Kasner spacetime to linear perturbations, both at late and early times. It demonstrates that the perturbation of the Weyl tensor diverges at late time in all cases but in the particular one in which the Kasner spacetime is the product of a two-dimensional Milne spacetime and a two-dimensional Euclidean space. At early times, the perturbation of the Weyl tensor also diverges unless one imposes a condition on the perturbations so as to avoid the most divergent modes to be excited.
Gravitational perturbations of the de Sitter spacetime are investigated using the Regge--Wheeler formalism. The set of perturbation equations is reduced to a single second order differential equation of the Heun-type for both electric and magnetic multipoles. The solution so obtained is used to study the deviation from an initially radial geodesic due to the perturbation. The spectral properties of the perturbed metric are also analyzed. Finally, gauge- and tetrad-invariant first-order massless perturbations of any spin are explored following the approach of Teukolsky. The existence of closed-…
Plane symmetric perturbations are applied to an axially symmetric Kasner spacetime which leads to no momentum flow orthogonal to the planes of symmetry. This flow appears laminar and the structure can be interpreted as a domain wall. We further extend consideration to the class of Bianchi Type I spacetimes and obtain corresponding results.
We discuss linearized gravitational perturbations of higher dimensional spacetimes. For algebraically special spacetimes (e.g. Myers-Perry black holes), we show that there exist local gauge invariant quantities linear in the metric perturbation. These are the higher dimensional generalizations of the 4d Newman-Penrose scalars that (in an algebraically special vacuum spacetime) satisfy decoupled equations of motion. We show that decoupling occurs in more than four dimensions if, and only if, the spacetime admits a null geodesic congruence with vanishing expansion, rotation and shear. Decoupling…
We study the possible asymptotically flat perturbations of Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We differentiate between algebraically special perturbations and general perturbations. The equations that determine physically realistic spacetimes with angular momentum are presented.
We discuss spacetime singularity resolution in the context of the gravity/gauge correspondence, for brane systems which give rise to gauge theories with eight supercharges and no hypermultiplets. We examine strictly static asymptotically flat spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with U(1) gauge field, revealing that, up to small curvature corrections, confomally flat slices of the spacetime in question are of Minkowski origin. We consider uncharged and charged black hole solutions in the theory, showing that, up to the small curvature limit, they are diffeomorphic to Schwarzschild_Tangherlini or Reissner-Nordstrom solutions, respectively.
We study anisotropic inflationary solutions in massive Gauge-flation. We work with the theory in both the Stueckelberg and dynamical symmetry-breaking limits and demonstrate that extended periods of accelerated anisotropic expansion are possible. In the case of dynamical symmetry breaking, we show that spacetime can transition from isotropic quasi-de Sitter space to an accelerating Bianchi spacetime due to a rolling Higgs field - the spacetime can develop hair. Similarly, symmetry restoring transitions are possible from accelerating Bianchi spacetime to quasi-de Sitter space - the spacetime ca…
The Noether gauge symmetries of geodesic Lagrangian for the pp-wave spacetimes are determined in each of the Noether gauge symmetry classes of the pp-wave spacetimes. It is shown that a type N pp-wave spacetime can admit at most three Noether gauge symmetry, and furthermore the number of Noether gauge symmetries turn out to be four, five, six, seven and eight. We found that all conformally flat plane wave spacetimes admit the maximal, i.e. ten, Noether gauge symmetry. Also it is found that if the pp-wave spacetime is non-conformally flat plane wave, then the number of Noether gauge symmetry is…
A manifestly covariant equation is derived to describe the second order perturbations in topological defects and membranes on arbitrary curved background spacetimes. This, on one hand, generalizes work on macroscopic strings in Minkowski spacetime and introduces a framework for studing in a precise manner membranes behavior near the black hole horizon and on the other hand, introduces a more general framework for examining the stability of topological defects in curved spacetimes.
Two-point correlators and self-correlators of primordial perturbations in quasi-de Sitter spacetime backgrounds are considered. For large separations two-point correlators exhibit nearly scale invariance, while for short distances self-correlators need standard renormalization. We study the deformation of two-point correlators to smoothly match the self-correlators at coincidence. The corresponding angular power spectrum is evaluated in the Sachs-Wolfe regime of low multipoles. Scale invariance is maintained, but the amplitude of $C_{\ell}$ could change in a non-trivial way.
The possibility of parity violation through spacetime torsion has been explored in a scenario containing fields with different spins. Taking the Kalb-Ramond field as the source of torsion, an explicitly parity violating $U(1)_{EM}$ gauge invariant theory has been constructed by extending the KR field with a Chern-Simons term.
A formulation of Poincare symmetry as an inner symmetry of field theories defined on a fixed Minkowski spacetime is given. Local P gauge transformations and the corresponding covariant derivative with P gauge fields are introduced. The renormalization properties of scalar, spinor and vector fields in P gauge field backgrounds are determined. A minimal gauge field dynamics consistent with the renormalization constraints is given.
A unified field theory of all known basic forces and elementary particles is built based on the postulates of gauge invariance and coordinate independence along with general conformal scaling symmetry. The hyper-spin charge of a unified hyper-spinor field is conjectured to correlate with the dimension of hyper-spacetime. The minimal dimension of hyper-spacetime for the unity of quarks and leptons in the standard model is found to be $D_h=19$ with a bimaximal symmetry. A unified fundamental interaction is governed by hyper-spin gauge symmetry SP(1,$D_h$-1). We show gravitational origin of gauge…
We extend recent work by Elizalde et al. to incorporate curvatures which are not small and backgrounds which are not just $S^2\times R^2, S^1\times S^1 \times R^2$. Some possible problems in their paper is also pointed out.
The advent of general relativity settled it once and for all that a theory of spacetime is inextricably linked to the theory of gravity. From the point of view of the gauge principle of Weyl and Yang-Mills-Utiyama, it became manifest around the 1960s (Sciama--Kibble) that gravity is closely related to the Poincare group acting in Minkowski space. The gauging of this external group induces a Riemann-Cartan geometry on spacetime. If one generalizes the gauge group of gravity, one finds still more involved spacetime geometries. If one specializes it to the translation group, one finds a specific …
A manifestly covariant equation is derived to describe the perturbations in a domain wall on a given background spacetime. This generalizes recent work on domain walls in Minkowski space and introduces a framework for examining the stability of relativistic bubbles in curved spacetimes.
We discuss the issue of observables in general-relativistic perturbation theory, adopting the view that any observable in general relativity is represented by a scalar field on spacetime. In the context of perturbation theory, an observable is therefore a scalar field on the perturbed spacetime, and as such is gauge invariant in an exact sense (to all orders), as one would expect. However, perturbations are usually represented by fields on the background spacetime, and expanded at different orders into contributions that may or may not be gauge independent. We show that perturbations of scalar…
The conventional role of spacetime geometry in the description of gravity is pointed out. Global Poincar$\acute{\mbox{e}}$ symmetry as an inner symmetry of field theories defined on a fixed Minkowski spacetime is discussed. Its extension to local {\bf P\/} gauge symmetry and the corresponding {\bf P\/} gauge fields are introduced. Their minimal coupling to matter is obtained. The scaling behaviour of the partition function of a spinor in {\bf P\/} gauge field backgrounds is computed. The corresponding renormalization constraint is used to determine a minimal gauge field dynamics.
Recently it was shown that Dirac's method of quantizing constrained dynamical systems can be used to impose the Lorenz gauge condition in a four-dimensional cosmological spacetime. In this paper we use Dirac's method to impose the Lorenz gauge condition in a general four-dimensional conformally flat spacetime and find that there is no particle production. We show that in cosmological spacetimes with dimension $D\neq 4$ there will be particle production when the scale factor changes, and we calculate the particle production due to a sudden change.
We study scalar field and electromagnetic perturbations on Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes, exploiting a recently developed covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation formalism. From the Klein-Gordon equation and Maxwell's equations, respectively, we derive covariant and gauge-invariant wave equations for the perturbation variables and thereby find the generalised Regge-Wheeler equations for these LRS class II spacetime perturbations. As illustrative examples, the results are discussed in detail for the Schwarzschild and Vaidya spacetime, and briefly for some classes o…
We provide a prescription to solve the metric completion problem in gravitational self-force calculations on a Kerr spacetime by fixing the remaining gauge freedom. We discuss the explicit example of eccentric equatorial orbits, recovering all limiting cases already studied in the literature of eccentric orbits in Schwarzschild as well as circular orbits in both Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes.
We study the dynamical evolution of a massless scalar perturbation in the Hořava-Lifshitz black-hole spacetimes with the coupling constants $λ={1/3}$, $λ={1/2}$ and $λ=3$, respectively. Our calculation shows that, for the three cases, the scalar perturbations decay without any oscillation in which the decay rate imprints the parameter of the Hořava-Lifshitz black hole. The results are quite different from those in the Schwarzschild AdS black hole and can help us understand more about the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity.
In this paper we apply the symmetry principle in order to search for an alternative unified explanation of several cosmological puzzles such as the present stage of accelerated expansion of the Universe and the Hubble tension issue, among others. We argue that Weyl gauge symmetry, being a manifest symmetry of gauge invariant theories of gravity operating on Weyl integrable geometry spacetimes, may be an actual (unbroken) symmetry of our present Universe. This symmetry may be at the core of a phenomenologically feasible explanation of modern fundamental issues arising within the framework of ge…
We study the stability under linear perturbations of a class of static solutions of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in $D=n+2$ dimensions with spatial slices of the form $Σ_{\k}^n \times {\mathbb R}^+$, $Σ_{\k}^n$ an $n-$manifold of constant curvature $\k$. Linear perturbations for this class of space-times can be generally classified into tensor, vector and scalar types. The analysis in this paper is restricted to tensor perturbations.
The simplest variant of gauge gravitation theory in Riemann-Cartan spacetime leading to the solution of the problem of cosmological singularity and dark energy problem is investigated. It is shown that this theory by certain restrictions on indefinite parameters of gravitational Lagrangian in the case of usual gravitating systems leads to Einstein gravitational equations with effective cosmological constant.
We discuss the canonical structure of a spacetime version of the radial gauge, i.e. Gaußian normal spacetime coordinates. While it was found for the spatial version of the radial gauge that a "local" algebra of observables can be constructed, it turns out that this is not possible for the spacetime version. The technical reason for this observation is that the new gauge condition needed to upgrade the spatial to a spacetime radial gauge does not Poisson-commute with the previous gauge conditions. It follows that the involved Dirac bracket is inherently non-local in the sense that no complete s…
In this paper, the gauge choices in general spherically symmetric spacetimes have been explored. We construct the gauge invariant variables and the master equations for both the Detweiler easy gauge and the Regge-Wheeler gauge, respectively. The particular cases for $l=0,1$ are also been investigated. Our results provide analytical calculations of metric perturbation in general spherically symmetric spacetimes, which can be applied to various cases, including the Effective-One-Body problem. A simple example is presented to show how the metric perturbation components are related to the source p…
