We provide a prescription to solve the metric completion problem in gravitational self-force calculations on a Kerr spacetime by fixing the remaining gauge freedom. We discuss the explicit example of eccentric equatorial orbits, recovering all limiting cases already studied in the literature of eccentric orbits in Schwarzschild as well as circular orbits in both Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes.
The interior volume of black holes as defined by Christodoulou and Rovelli exhibits many surprising features. For example, it increases with time, even under Hawking evaporation. For some black holes, the interior volume is not even a monotonic increasing function of its area, which means one cannot infer how large a black hole is by just looking from the outside. Such a notion of volume, however, turns out to be useful in the context of holography, as it seems to be dual to the complexity of the boundary field theory. In this study, we investigate the properties of the interior volume of 4-di…
We discuss a gauge choice which allows us to avoid the introduction of artificial timelike outer boundaries in numerical studies of test fields based on a 3+1 decomposition of asymptotically flat background spacetimes. The main idea is to include null infinity in the computational domain by conformally compactifying the metric on hyperboloidal foliations and fixing the spatial coordinate location of null infinity, i.e. scri-fixing. We construct such coordinates explicitly on Minkowski, Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes.
We prove a key result regarding the mass and angular momentum content of linear vacuum perturbations of the Kerr metric obtained through the formalism developed by Chrzarnowski, Cohen, and Kegeles (CCK). More precisely we prove that the Abbott-Deser mass and angular momentum integrals of any such perturbation vanish, when that perturbation was obtained from a regular Fourier mode of the Hertz potential. As a corollary we obtain a generalization of previous results on the completion of the `no string' radiation gauge metric perturbation generated by a point particle. We find that for any bound …
We extend previous work [arXiv:1908.09095] to the case of Maxwell's equations with a source. Our work shows how to construct a retarded vector potential for the Maxwell field on the Kerr-Newman background in a radiation gauge. As in our previous work, the vector potential has a "reconstructed" term obtained from a Hertz potential solving Teukolsky's equation with a source, and a "correction" term which is obtainable by a simple integration along outgoing principal null rays. The singularity structure of our vector potential is discussed in the case of a point particle source.
We analyze the constraints of gauge theories on Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, which contain one or more horizons. We find that the constraints are modified on such backgrounds through the presence of additional surface terms at the horizons. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field and find that the Gauss law constraint involves surface corrections at the horizons. These surface contributions correspond to induced surface charges and currents on the horizons, which agree with those found within the membrane paradigm. The modification of the Gauss law constraint also influence…
We present a first numerical implementation of a new scheme by Pound et al. that enables the calculation of the gravitational self-force in Kerr spacetime from a reconstructed metric-perturbation in a radiation gauge. The numerical task of the metric reconstruction essentially reduces to solving the fully separable Teukolsky equation, rather than having to tackle the linearized Einstein's equations themselves. The method offers significant computational saving compared to existing methods in the Lorenz gauge, and we expect it to become a main workhorse for precision self-force calculations in …
In the context of effective field theory, we consider quantum gravity with minimally coupled massless particles. Fixing the background geometry to be of the Kerr-Schild type, we fully determine the one-loop effective action of the theory whose finite non-local part is induced by the long-distance portion of quantum loops. This is accomplished using the non-local expansion of the heat kernel in addition to a non-linear completion technique through which the effective action is expanded in gravitational curvatures. Via Euclidean methods, we identify a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Haw…
We present the first numerical calculation of the (local) metric perturbation produced by a small compact object moving on an eccentric equatorial geodesic around a Kerr black hole, accurate to first order in the mass ratio. The procedure starts by first solving the Teukolsky equation to obtain the Weyl scalar $ψ_4$ using semi-analytical methods. The metric perturbation is then reconstructed from $ψ_4$ in an (outgoing) radiation gauge, adding the appropriate non-radiative contributions arising from the shifts in mass and angular momentum of the spacetime. As a demonstration we calculate the ge…

We study gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetime by solving a hyperboloidal initial value problem for the Bardeen-Press equation. Compactification along hyperboloidal surfaces in a scri-fixing gauge allows us to have access to the gravitational waveform at null infinity in a general setup. We argue that this hyperboloidal approach leads to a more accurate and efficient calculation of the radiation signal than the common approach where a timelike outer boundary is introduced. The method can be generalized to study perturbations of Kerr spacetime using the Teukolsky equation.
Vacuum perturbations of the Kerr metric can be reconstructed from the corresponding perturbation in either of the two Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ or $ψ_4$, using a procedure described by Chrzanowski and others in the 1970s. More recent work, motivated within the context of self-force physics, extends the procedure to metric perturbations sourced by a particle in a bound geodesic orbit. However, the existing procedure leaves undetermined a certain stationary, axially-symmetric piece of the metric perturbation. In the vacuum region away from the particle, this "completion" piece corresponds simply to mas…
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) will soon provide the first high-resolution images of the Galactic Centre supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidate Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), enabling us to probe gravity in the strong-field regime. Besides studying the accretion process in extreme environments, the obtained data and reconstructed images could be used to investigate the underlying spacetime structure. In its current configuration, the EHT is able to distinguish between a rotating Kerr black hole and a horizon-less object like a boson star. Future developments can increase the ability of the EHT …
Usual gauge fixing procedures in classical general relativity rely on the existence of solutions of a second order wave equation. We propose to use the equation to relate asymptotic symmetries at infinity to asymptotic symmetries of a black hole horizon, in tune with recent proposals. We illustrate the construction for the BTZ and four-dimensional Kerr black holes. We find in both cases a realization of the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle $S^1$.
In symmetric teleparallel gravities, where the independent connection is characterized by nonmetricity while curvature and torsion are zero, it is possible to find a coordinate system whereby the connection vanishes globally and covariant derivatives reduce to partial derivatives -- the coincident gauge. In this paper we derive general transformation rules into the coincident gauge for spacetime configurations where the both the metric and connection are static and spherically symmetric, and write out the respective form of the coincident gauge metrics. Taking different options in fixing the f…
Calculations of the gravitational self-force (GSF) in curved spacetime require as input the metric perturbation in a sufficiently regular gauge. A basic challenge in the program to compute the GSF for orbits around a Kerr black hole is that the standard procedure for reconstructing the perturbation is formulated in a class of radiation gauges, in which the particle singularity is non-isotropic and extends away from the particle's location. Here we present two practical schemes for calculating the GSF using a radiation-gauge reconstructed metric as input. The schemes are based on a detailed ana…
