We give a 3-categorical, purely formal argument explaining why on the category of Kleisli algebras for a lax monoidal monad, and dually on the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras for an oplax monoidal monad, we always have a natural monoidal structures. The key observation is that the 2-category of lax monoidal monads in any 2-category D with finite products is isomorphic to the 2-category of monoidal objects with oplax morphisms in the 2-category of monads with lax morphisms in D. As we explain at the end of the paper a similar phenomenon occurs in many other situations.
It is well-known that the category of Kleisli algebras for a monoidal monad carries a canonical monoidal structure. We define the notion of a commutative graded monad and present a strictly two-categorical proof that Kleisli algebras for such monads equally carry a canonical monoidal structure which reduce to the monoidal monad case when the commutative graded monad in question is graded over the trivial monoidal category.
Certain aspects of Street's formal theory of monads in 2-categories are extended to multimonoidal monads in symmetric strict monoidal 2-categories. Namely, any symmetric strict monoidal 2-category $\mathcal M$ admits a symmetric strict monoidal 2-category of pseudomonoids, monoidal 1-cells and monoidal 2-cells in $\mathcal M$. Dually, there is a symmetric strict monoidal 2-category of pseudomonoids, opmonoidal 1-cells and opmonoidal 2-cells in $\mathcal M$. Extending a construction due to Aguiar and Mahajan for $\mathcal M=\mathsf{Cat}$, we may apply the first construction $p$-times and the se…
Szlachányi showed that bialgebroids can be characterised using skew monoidal categories. The characterisation reduces the amount of data, structure, and properties required to define them. Lack and Street provide a bicategorical account of that same fact; they characterise quantum categories in terms of skew monoidal structures internal to a monoidal bicategory. A quantum category is an opmonoidal monad on an enveloping monoidale $R^\circ\otimes R$ in a monoidal bicategory. In a previous paper, we characterised opmonoidal arrows on enveloping monoidales as a simpler structure called oplax acti…
An object $P$ in a monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ is called pivotal if its left dual and right dual objects are isomorphic. Given such an object and a choice of dual $Q$, we construct the category $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$, of objects which intertwine with $P$ and $Q$ in a compatible manner. We show that this category lifts the monoidal structure of $\mathcal{C}$ and the closed structure of $\mathcal{C}$, when $\mathcal{C}$ is closed. If $\mathcal{C}$ has suitable colimits we show that $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$ is monadic and thereby construct a family of Hopf monads on arbitrary closed monoidal categories…
If a monad $T$ is monoidal, then operations on a set $X$ can be lifted canonically to operations on $TX$. In this paper we study structural properties under which $T$ preserves equations between those operations. It has already been shown that any monoidal monad preserves linear equations; affine monads preserve drop equations (where some variable appears only on one side, such as $x\cdot y = y$) and relevant monads preserve dup equations (where some variable is duplicated, such as $x \cdot x = x$). We start the paper by showing a converse: if the monad at hand preserves a drop equation, then …
We give a conceptual treatment of the notion of joints, marginals, and independence in the setting of categorical probability. This is achieved by endowing the usual probability monads (like the Giry monad) with a monoidal and an opmonoidal structure, mutually compatible (i.e. a bimonoidal structure). If the underlying monoidal category is cartesian monoidal, a bimonoidal structure is given uniquely by a commutative strength. However, if the underlying monoidal category is not cartesian monoidal, a strength is not enough to guarantee all the desired properties of joints and marginals. A bimono…
We introduce and study functor-functor and monad-comonad interaction laws as mathematical objects to describe interaction of effectful computations with behaviors of effect-performing machines. Monad-comonad interaction laws are monoid objects of the monoidal category of functor-functor interaction laws. We show that, for suitable generalizations of the concepts of dual and Sweedler dual, the greatest functor resp. monad interacting with a given functor or comonad is its dual while the greatest comonad interacting with a given monad is its Sweedler dual. We relate monad-comonad interaction law…
In this mainly expository note, we state a criterion for when a left Kan extension of a lax monoidal functor along a strong monoidal functor can itself be equipped with a lax monoidal structure, in a way that results in a left Kan extension in MonCat. This belongs to the general theory of algebraic Kan extensions, as developed by Melliès-Tabareau, Koudenburg and Weber, and is very close to an instance of a theorem of Koudenburg. We find this special case particularly important due to its connections with the theory of graded monads.
We introduce a general construction on 2-monads. We develop background on maps of 2-monads, their left semi-algebras, and colimits in 2-category. Then, we introduce the construction of a colimit induced by a map of 2-monads, show that we obtain the structure of a 2-monad and give a characterisation of its algebras. Finally, we apply the construction to the map of 2-monads between free symmetric monoidal and the free cartesian 2-monads and combine them into a linear-non-linear 2-monad.
Quantum categories have been recently studied because of their relation to bialgebroids, small categories, and skew monoidales. This is the first of a series of papers based on the author's PhD thesis in which we examine the theory of quantum categories developed by Day, Lack, and Street. A quantum category is an opmonoidal monad on the monoidale associated to a biduality $R\dashv R^{\circ}$, or enveloping monoidale, in a monoidal bicategory of modules $\mathsf{Mod}(\mathcal{V})$ for a monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$. Lack and Street proved that quantum categories are in equivalence with right…
We survey the theory of Hopf monads on monoidal categories, and present new examples and applications. As applications, we utilise this machinery to present a new theory of cross products, as well as analogues of the Fundamental Theorem of Hopf algebras and Radford's biproduct Theorem for Hopf algebroids. Additionally, we describe new examples of Hopf monads which arise from Galois and Ore extensions of bialgebras. We also classify Lawvere theories whose corresponding monads on the category of sets and functions become Hopf, as well as Hopf monads on the poset of natural numbers.
We explain two related constructions on the data of two monoidal symmetric closed categories $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{E}$ and monoidal functors $F: \mathscr{E}\to \mathscr{A}$ and $G: \mathscr{A}\to \mathscr{E}$. In a first part, we recall and partly extend work of A. Kock: In case $F$ is left-adjoint to $G$, and this adjunction is monoidal, we can equip the Eilenberg-Moore category $\mathscr{E}^T$ for $T$ being the canonical monad associated to the adjunction, with the structure of symmetric monoidal closed category, provided $\mathscr{E}$ has equalizers and $\mathscr{E}^T$ co-equalizers. …
We define and study a probability monad on the category of complete metric spaces and short maps. It assigns to each space the space of Radon probability measures on it with finite first moment, equipped with the Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance. This monad is analogous to the Giry monad on the category of Polish spaces, and it extends a construction due to van Breugel for compact and for 1-bounded complete metric spaces. We prove that this Kantorovich monad arises from a colimit construction on finite power-like constructions, which formalizes the intuition that probability measures are limit…
We study integrals of Hopf monoids in duoidal endohom categories of naturally Frobenius map monoidales in monoidal bicategories. We prove two Maschke type theorems, relating the separability of the underlying monoid and comonoid, respectively, to the existence of normalized integrals. It covers the examples provided by Hopf monoids in braided monoidal categories, weak Hopf algebras, Hopf algebroids over central base algebras, Hopf monads on autonomous monoidal categories and Hopf categories.
