Strong outbursts in very young and embedded protostars are rare and not yet fully understood. They are believed to originate from an increase of the mass accretion rate onto the source. We report the discovery of a strong outburst in a low-mass embedded young stellar object (YSO), namely 2MASS-J05424848-0816347 or [CTF93]216-2, as well as its photometric and spectroscopic follow-up. Using near- to mid-IR photometry and NIR low-resolution spectroscopy, we monitor the outburst, deriving its magnitude, duration, as well as the enhanced accretion luminosity and mass accretion rate. [CTF93]216-2 increased in brightness by ~4.6, 4.0, 3.8, and 1.9 mag in the J, H, Ks bands and at 24 um, respectively, corresponding to an L_bol increase of ~20 L_sun. Its early spectrum, probably taken soon after the outburst, displays a steep almost featureless continuum, with strong CO band heads and H_2O broad-band absorption features, and Br gamma line in emission. A later spectrum reveals more absorption features, allowing us to estimate T_eff~3200 K, M~0.25 M_sun, and mass accretion rate~1.2x10^{-6} M_sun yr^{-1}. This makes it one of the lowest mass YSOs with a strong outburst so far discovered.
We have determined the rate of large accretion events in class I and II young stellar objects (YSOs) by comparing the all-sky digitised photographic plate surveys provided by SuperCOSMOS with the latest data release from Gaia (DR2). The long mean baseline of 55 years along with a large sample of class II YSOs ($\simeq$15,000) allows us to study approximately 1 million YSO-years. We find 139 objects with $ΔR\geq1$~mag, most of which are found at amplitudes between 1 and 3 mag. The majority of YSOs in this group show irregular variability or long-lasting fading events, which is best explained as…
Disks around young stellar objects (YSOs) consist of material that thermally emits the energy provided by a combination of passive heating from the central star, and active, viscous heating due to mass accretion. FU Ori stars are YSOs with substantially enhanced accretion rates in their inner disk regions. As a disk transitions from standard low-state, to FU Ori-like high-state accretion, the outburst manifests through photometric brightening over a broad range of wavelengths. We present results for the expected amplitudes of the brightening between $\sim$4000 Å and 8 $μ$m -- the wavelength ra…
Young stellar objects (YSOs) may undergo periods of active accretion (outbursts), during which the protostellar accretion rate is temporarily enhanced by a few orders of magnitude. Whether or not these accretion outburst YSOs possess similar dust/gas reservoirs to each other, and whether or not their dust/gas reservoirs are similar as quiescent YSOs, are issues not yet clarified. The aim of this work is to characterize the millimeter thermal dust emission properties of a statistically significant sample of long and short duration accretion outburst YSOs (i.e., FUors and EXors) and the spectros…

Context. The classification of young stellar objects (YSOs) is typically done using the infrared spectral slope or bolometric temperature, but either can result in contamination of samples. More accurate methods to determine the evolutionary stage of YSOs will improve the reliability of statistics for the embedded YSO population and provide more robust stage lifetimes. Aims. We aim to separate the truly embedded YSOs from more evolved sources. Methods. Maps of HCO+ J=4-3 and C18O J=3-2 were observed with HARP on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) for a sample of 56 candidate YSOs in Pers…
The FU Orionis (FUor) or EX Orionis (EXor) phenomenon has attracted increasing attention in recent years and is now accepted as a crucial element in the early evolution of low-mass stars. FUor and EXor eruptions of young stellar objects (YSOs) are caused by strongly enhanced accretion from the surrounding disk. FUors display optical outbursts of $\sim$ 4 mag or more and last for several decades, whereas EXors show smaller outbursts ($Δ$m $\sim$ 2 - 3 mag) that last from a few months to a few years and may occur repeatedly. Therefore, FUor/EXor eruptions represent a rare but very important phen…
Accretion onto protostars may occur in sharp bursts. Accretion bursts during the embedded phase of young protostars are probably most intense, but can only be inferred indirectly through long-wavelength observations. We perform radiative transfer calculations for young stellar objects (YSOs) formed in hydrodynamic simulations to predict the long wavelength, sub-mm and mm, flux responses to episodic accretion events, taking into account heating from the young protostar and from the interstellar radiation field. We find that the flux increase due to episodic accretion events is more prominent at…
Massive stars are rarely seen to form in isolation. It has been proposed that association with companions or clusters in the formative stages is vital to their mass accumulation. In this paper we study IRAS~18144-1723, a massive young stellar object (YSO) which had been perceived in early studies as a single source. In the CO(3-2) line, we detect an outflow aligned well with the outflow seen in H$_2$ in this region. We show that there are at least two YSOs here, and that the outflow is most likely to be from a deeply embedded source detected in our infrared imaging. Using multi-wavelength obse…
Like other young stellar objects (YSOs), FU Ori-type stars have been detected as strong X-ray emitters. However, little is known about how the outbursts of these stars affect their X-ray properties. We assemble available X-ray data from XMM Newton and Chandra observations of 16 FU Ori stars, including a new XMM Newton observation of Gaia 17bpi during its optical rise phase. Of these stars, six were detected at least once, while 10 were non-detections, for which we calculate upper limits on intrinsic X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) as a function of plasma temperature ($kT$) and column density ($N_H$).…
Context. FU Orionis is the archetypal FUor star, a subclass of young stellar object (YSO) that undergo rapid brightening events, often gaining 4-6 magnitudes on timescales of days. This brightening is often associated with a massive increase in accretion; one of the most ubiquitous processes in astrophysics from planets and stars to super-massive black holes. We present multi-band interferometric observations of the FU Ori circumstellar environment, including the first J-band interferometric observations of a YSO. Aims. We investigate the morphology and temperature gradient of the inner-most r…
We carried out observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers in a high-mass protostar S255 NIRS 3 by using VERA. We measured the proper motions of the 22 GHz H2O masers associated with a bipolar outflow. The expansion velocity of the blueshifted bow shock traced by the 22 GHz H2O masers was 28 km s-1 corresponding to a dynamical timescale of 60 years. The direction of the maser outflow is slightly tilted compared with the radio jet, which could suggest a more recent ejection episode during the accretion burst event. The total flux density of the 22 GHz H2O masers has gradually increased from early 201…
Motivated by the recent detection of a large number of embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) with mass accretion rates that are inconsistent with the predictions of the standard model of inside-out collapse (Shu 1977), we perform a series on numerical hydrodynamic simulations of the gravitational collapse of molecular cloud cores with various initial masses, rotation rates, and sizes. We focus on the early Class I stage of stellar evolution when circumstellar disks are exposed to high rates of mass deposition from infalling envelopes. Our numerical modeling reproduces the large observed spread…
We search the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) archives of the two best studied dwarf novae in an attempt to find light curves for long outbursts that are extremely well-characterized. The systems are U Gem and SS Cyg. Our goal is to search for embedded precursors such as those that have been found recently in the high fidelity Kepler data for superoutbursts of some members of the SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae. For the vast majority of AAVSO data, the combination of low data cadence and large errors associated with individual measurements precludes one from making any s…
We present Spitzer, NIR and millimeter observations of the massive star forming regions W5-east, S235, S252, S254-S258 and NGC7538. Spitzer data is combined with near-IR observations to identify and classify the young population while 12CO and 13CO observations are used to examine the parental molecular cloud. We detect in total 3021 young stellar objects (YSOs). Of those, 539 are classified as Class I, and 1186 as Class II sources. YSOs are distributed in groups surrounded by a more scattered population. Class I sources are more hierarchically organized than Class II and associated with the m…
We observed the IW And-type dwarf nova ST Cha and found that standstills were terminated by brightening at a constant brightness level during standstills. This finding is not consistent with a model of IW And-type dwarf novae assuming repeated enhancements of the mass-transfer rate from the secondary. We found that one outburst in ST Cha had a shoulder during the rising branch at the same level in which standstills were terminated by brightening. This phenomenon is very similar to what are called "embedded precursors" in SS Cyg stars. We propose that these embedded precursors in both SS Cyg st…
The aim of this study is to understand the chemical conditions of ices around embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We performed near-infrared (2.5-5 micron) spectroscopic observations toward 12 massive embedded YSOs and their candidates in the LMC using the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. We estimated the column densities of the H2O, CO2, and CO ices based on their 3.05, 4.27, and 4.67 micron absorption features, and we investigated the correlation between ice abundances and physical properties of YSOs.The ice absorption features of H2O, CO…
Characterising stellar and circumstellar properties of embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) is mandatory for understanding the early stages of the stellar evolution. This task requires the combination of both spectroscopy and photometry, covering the widest possible wavelength range, to disentangle the various protostellar components and activities. As part of the POISSON project, we present a multi-wavelength spectroscopic and photometric investigation of embedded YSOs in L1641, aimed to derive the stellar parameters and evolutionary stages and to infer their accretion properties. Our databa…
Identifying the population of young stellar objects (YSOs) in high extinction regions is a prerequisite for studies of star formation. This task is not trivial, as reddened background objects can be indistinguishable from YSOs in near-infrared colour-colour diagrams. Here we combine deep JHK photometry with J- and K-band lightcurves, obtained with UKIRT/WFCAM, to explore the YSO population in the dark cloud IC1396W. We demonstrate that a colour-variability criterion can provide useful constraints on the star forming activity in embedded regions. For IC1396W we find that a near-infrared colour …
Aims. We report the discovery of a strong outburst of the embedded young stellar object (YSO), namely UKIDSS-J185318.36+012454.5, located in the star-forming region associated with IRAS 18507+0121 source and GAL 034.4+00.23 HII region. Methods. Using the archival photometric data and images we determined the amplitude and the epoch of the outburst, as well as the evolution stage and the basic parameters of the object. Results. According to the near and mid-infrared colors and spectral energy distribution, we classify the object as an intermediate-mass young stellar object (YSO) with Class 0/I …
We report Submillimeter Array (SMA) 1.3 mm high angular resolution observations towards the four EXor type outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs) VY Tau, V1118 Ori, V1143 Ori, and NY Ori. The data mostly show low dust masses $M_{dust}$ in the associated circumstellar disks. Among the sources, NY Ori possesses a relatively massive disk with $M_{dust} \sim 9 \times 10^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1118 Ori has a marginal detection equivalent to $M_{dust} \sim 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1143 Ori has a non-detection also equivalent to $M_{dust} < 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. For the nearest source …
Outbursts of young stellar objects occur when the mass accretion rate suddenly increases. However, such outbursts are difficult to detect for deeply embedded protostars due to their thick envelope and the rarity of outbursts. The near-IR spectroscopy is a useful tool to identify ongoing outburst candidates by the characteristic absorption features that indicate a disk origin. However, without high-resolution spectroscopy, the spectra of outburst candidates can be confused with the late-type stars since they have similar spectral features. For the protostar IRAS 16316-1540, the near-IR spectrum…
We present medium-resolution (R $\sim$ 4000) YJ, H \& K band spectroscopy of candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in NGC~346, the most active star-formation region in the metal-poor (Z = 1/5 Z$_{\sun}$) Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra were obtained with the KMOS (K-Band Multi Object Spectrograph) integral field instrument on the Very Large Telescope. From our initial sample of 18 candidate high-mass YSOs previously identified from mid-IR photometry and radiative transfer model fits to their spectral energy distributions, approximately half were resolved into multiple components by our in…
We report the discovery of a mid-infrared outburst in a Young Stellar Object (YSO) with an amplitude close to 8 mag at $λ$$\approx$4.6 $μ$m. WISEA J142238.82-611553.7 is one of 23 highly variable WISE sources discovered in a search of Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs). It lies within the small IRDC G313.671-0.309 (d$\approx$2.6 kpc), seen by the Herschel/HiGal survey as a compact, massive cloud core that may have been measurably warmed by the event. Pre-outburst data from Spitzer in 2004 suggest that it is a class I YSO, a view supported by observation of weak 2.12 $μ$m H$_2$ emission in an otherwi…
We present an analytical study of a large sample of ~109 young stellar objects in the X-ray. Our objects were detected in X-ray independent of age. Unexpectedly, the X-ray energy is somewhat correlated with the ages. It decreases with time and with column density, while it should increase. We conclude that the youngest protostars, Class 0/I, emit X-rays in the 1-8 keV band. The deeply embedded sources with the strongest accretion activity are detected in the hard-band (> 2keV) only. Due to extinction, their soft X-rays are not detected. To explain the decline in energy, we suggest that within …
The low mass star ASASSN-13db experienced an EXor outburst in 2013, which identified it as a Young Stellar Object (YSO). Then, from 2014 to 2017 it had another outburst, longer and more luminous than the earlier. We analyze the observations of the second outburst, and compare it to eruptions of Intermediate Luminosity Optical Transients (ILOTs). We show that the decline of the light curve is almost identical to that of the V838 Mon, a prototype of a type of ILOT known as Luminous Red Nova (LRN). This similarity becomes conspicuous when oscillations that are associated with rotation are filtere…
The luminous Young Stellar Object (YSO) IRAS 07422-2001 is studied in the infrared. We discover star forming activity in embedded clusters located in a cloud detected at mid-IR wavelengths in emission. Multiple outflows are discovered from these clusters in the H_2 ro-vibrational line at 2.122 micron. We detect at least six outflows from the cluster associated with the IRAS source and another outflow from a source located in a cluster detected ~2.7 arcmin NE of the IRAS source. Additional star formation is taking place in two other cluster candidates within the cloud. Three of the YSOs in the …
The light curve of Gaia23bab (= SPICY 97589) shows two significant ($ΔG>2$ mag) brightening events, one in 2017 and an ongoing event starting in 2022. The source's quiescent spectral energy distribution indicates an embedded ($A_V>5$ mag) pre-main-sequence star, with optical accretion emission and mid-infrared disk emission. This characterization is supported by the source's membership in an embedded cluster in the star-forming cloud DOBASHI 1604 at a distance of $900\pm45$~pc. Thus, the brightening events are probable accretion outbursts, likely of EX Lup-type.
We discuss ASASSN-13db, an EX Lupi-type ("EXor") accretion event on the young stellar object (YSO) SDSS J051011.01$-$032826.2 (hereafter SDSSJ0510) discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). Using archival photometric data of SDSSJ0510 we construct a pre-outburst spectral energy distribution (SED) and find that it is consistent with a low-mass class II YSO near the Orion star forming region ($d \sim 420$ pc). We present follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations of the source after the $ΔV \sim-$5.4 magnitude outburst that began in September 2013 and ended i…
We investigate the star formation activity in a young star forming cluster embedded at the edge of the RCW 41 HII region. As a complementary goal, we aim at demonstrating the gain provided by Wide-Field Adaptive Optics instruments to study young clusters. We used deep, JHKs images from the newly commissioned Gemini-GeMS/GSAOI instrument, complemented with Spitzer IRAC observations, in order to study the photometric properties of the young stellar cluster. GeMS is an AO instrument, delivering almost diffraction limited images over a field of 2' across. The exquisite angular resolution allows us…
We demonstrate the unique capabilities of Herschel to study very young luminous extragalactic young stellar objects (YSOs) by analyzing a central strip of the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained through the HERITAGE Science Demonstration Program. We combine PACS 100 and 160, and SPIRE 250, 350, and 500 microns photometry with 2MASS (1.25-2.17 microns) and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS (3.6-70 microns) to construct complete spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of compact sources. From these, we identify 207 candidate embedded YSOs in the observed region, ~40% never-before identified. We discuss their posit…
We review the use of young low mass stars and protostars, or young stellar objects (YSOs), as tracers of star formation. Observations of molecular clouds at visible, infrared, radio and X-ray wavelengths can identify and characterize the YSOs populating these clouds, with the ability to detect deeply embedded objects and all evolutionary stages. Surveys with the Spitzer, Herschel, XMM-Newton and Chandra space telescopes have measured the spatial distribution of YSOs within a number of nearby (< 2.5 kpc) molecular clouds, showing surface densities varying by more than three orders of magnitude.…
FUor outbursts in young stellar objects (YSOs) are the most dramatic events among episodic accretion phenomena. The origin of these bursts is not clear: disk instabilities and/or disk perturbations by an external body being the most viable hypotheses. Here, we report our VLT/SINFONI high angular resolution AO-assisted observations of 2MASS J06593158-0405277, which is undergoing a recently discovered FUor outburst. Our observations reveal the presence of an extended disc-like structure around the FUor, a very low-mass companion (2MASS J06593158-0405277B) at ~100 au in projection, and, possibly,…
The science case on studies of accretion and outflows in low-mass ($<$1.5 $M_{\odot}$) young stellar objects (YSOs) with the new CUBES instrument is presented. We show the need for a high-sensitivity, near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectrograph like CUBES, with a resolving power at least four times that of X-Shooter and combined with UVES via a fibrelink for simultaneous observations. Simulations with the CUBES exposure time calculator and the end-to-end software show that a significant gain in signal-to -noise can be achieved compared to current instruments, for both the spectral continuum and emissi…
The Carina Nebula represents one of the largest and most active star forming regions known in our Galaxy with numerous very massive stars. Our recently obtained Herschel PACS & SPIRE far-infrared maps cover the full area (about 8.7 deg^2) of the Carina Nebula complex and reveal the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects, most of which are not yet visible in the mid- or near-infrared.We study the properties of the 642 objects that are independently detected as point-like sources in at least two of the five Herschel bands. For those objects that can be identified with apparently singl…
Z CMa is a complex pre-main sequence binary with a current separation of 100 mas, known to consist of an FU Orionis star (SE component) and an embedded Herbig Be star (NW component). Immediately when the late-2008 outburst of Z CMa was announced to the community, we initiated a high angular resolution imaging campaign with VLT/NaCo, Keck/NIRC2, VLT/SINFONI, and Keck/OSIRIS which aimed at characterizing the outburst of both components of the system in the near-infrared. We confirm that the NW star dominates the system flux in the 1.1-3.8 microns range and is responsible for the photometric outb…
Archival optical spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey of two optically faint flat spectrum protostars, IRAS 04369+2539 and IRAS 05451+0037, show strong emission-line features including -- notably -- clear and broad emission across several molecular bands of TiO and VO. The molecular emission is indicative of dense, warm circumstellar gas and has been seen previously in only one object: the flat spectrum protostar IRAS 20496+4354 during a strong optical outburst (PTF 10nvg; Covey et al. 2011). The presence of broad molecular emission features in two additional objects having similar mid-in…
Intermediate-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) provide a link to understand how feedback from shocks and UV radiation scales from low to high-mass star forming regions. Aims: Our aim is to analyze excitation of CO and H$_2$O in deeply-embedded intermediate-mass YSOs and compare with low-mass and high-mass YSOs. Methods: Herschel/PACS spectral maps are analyzed for 6 YSOs with bolometric luminosities of $L_\mathrm{bol}\sim10^2 - 10^3$ $L_\odot$. The maps cover spatial scales of $\sim 10^4$ AU in several CO and H$_2$O lines located in the $\sim55-210$ $μ$m range. Results: Rotational diagrams of …
We report multi-epoch VLBI H$_2$O maser observations towards the compact cluster of YSOs close to the Herbig Be star LkH$α$ 234. This cluster includes LkH$α$ 234 and at least nine more YSOs that are formed within projected distances of $\sim$10 arcsec ($\sim$9,000 au). We detect H$_2$O maser emission towards four of these YSOs. In particular, our VLBI observations (including proper motion measurements) reveal a remarkable very compact ($\sim$0.2 arcsec = $\sim$180 au), bipolar H$_2$O maser outflow emerging from the embedded YSO VLA 2. We estimate a kinematic age of $\sim$40 yr for this bipolar…
V1647 Ori is a young eruptive variable star, illuminating a reflection nebula (McNeil's Nebula). It underwent an outburst in 2003 before fading back to its pre-outburst brightness in 2006. In 2008, V1647 Ori underwent a new outburst. The observed properties of the 2003-2006 event are different in several respects from both the EXor and FUor type outbursts, and suggest that this star might represent a new class of eruptive young stars, younger and more deeply embedded than EXors, and exhibiting variations on shorter time scales than FUors. In outburst, the star lights up the otherwise invisible…
A grid of 20 millions 3-1100$μ$m SED models is presented for synthetic young clusters embedded in dense clumps. The models depend on four primary parameters: the clump mass M$_{clump}$ and dust temperature T$_{dust}$, the fraction of mass f$_{core}$ locked in dense cores, and the age of the clump t$_{SF}$. We populate the YSO clusters using the IMF from Kroupa(2001) and the YSOs SED models grid of Robitaille et al. (2006). We conduct extensive testing of SED fitting using a simulated dataset and we find that M$_{clump}$ essentially depends on the submillimeter portion of the SED, while T$_{dus…
We present a comprehensive study of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor galaxy NGC 6822 using IRAC and MIPS data obtained from the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. We find over 500 new YSO candidates in seven massive star-formation regions; these sources were selected using six colour-magnitude cuts. Via spectral energy distribution fitting to the data with YSO radiative transfer models we refine this list, identifying 105 high-confidence and 88 medium-confidence YSO candidates. For these sources we constrain their evolutionary state and estimate their physical properties. The…
